Abstract:By introducing Co2+ ions as a structural inducer, we have successfully synthesized five new Ln3+-cucurbit[5]urilbased supramolecular assemblies within the cucurbit[5]uril (Q[5]) system with rare-earth elements (Pr3+, Sm3+, Eu3+, Gd3+ and Dy3+) by solvent evaporation method. A meticulous analysis of the crystal structure uncovers that the aforementioned assemblies constitute isomorphic 3D frameworks, which are stabilized through outersurface interactions of cucurbit[n]uril (OSIQ). Within these frameworks, Q[5] directly coordinates with rareearth metal ions to generate simple "Ln3+-Q[5]" molecular bowl structure. Six of these molecular bowls then arrange themselves to create a 3D honeycomb-like framework with channels occupied by the structure-guiding agent [Co(H2O)6]2+ through H-bond. Additionally, we explored the fluorescence sensing capabilities of the assembly 5 for amino acids, which indicate that it holds promise as a fluorescent sensor material, particularly for detecting L-Tryptophan (L-Try).

Abstract:Based on the crystal structures of two cucurbit[6]uril/calix[n]arene-based supramolecular frameworks reported by Long and co-workers,we further investigated the interactions of cucurbit[6]uril with 4-sulfocalix[4]arene and 4-sulfocalix[6]arene using ~1 H NMR spectroscopy and isothermal titration calorimetry（ITC）,respectively.Moreover,solid fluorescent materials were prepared via the adsorption of fluorescent dyes by these porous supramolecular frameworks,which exhibit a selective response to certain volatile organic compounds.

Abstract:For many years, studies on the generation of periodic or regular porosity and their properties and functions have been limited to insoluble solid-state materials. Self-assembly provides a straightforward strategy for the construction of water-soluble porous supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) from rationally designed rigid multitopic molecular components and cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]). The process is driven hydrophobically by CB[8]-encapsulation-enhanced dimerization of the aromatic (CEBA) units that are appended to the multitopic molecules. By using this strategy, a variety of two-dimensional honeycomb-shaped, square, and rhombic SOFs have been constructed, some of which exhibit interesting absorption and sensing functions. From tetraphenylmethane- and [Ru(bipy)3]2+-derived precursors, three-dimensional diamondoid and cubic SOFs can also be generated. The diamondoid frameworks have been revealed to be open carriers for in situ loading and delivery of antitumor drugs, whereas [Ru(bipy)3]2+-cored frameworks are good porous photosensitizing materials for the enrichment of anionic polyoxometalate catalysts for new visible light–initiated reduction of proton to hydrogen gas. The progress well demonstrates the CB[8]-based CEBA strategy in constructing advanced water-soluble functional porous materials from symmetric preorganized aromatic precursors.

Abstract:Cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]) have great potential in material and medical applications due to their advantageous molecular recognition properties. Despite organic microcrystals being highly desirable in materials science and the medical industry, CB[n]-based micro- and nanocrystals have not been reported. A facile and efficient approach for producing CB[8]-based organic crystals with well-defined micro- and nanostructures is described, based on the unique hostguest chemistry of CB[8] macrocycle with small guest molecules. The described strategy allows fabrication of micro- and nanocrystals with multiple morphologies and compositions by simply adjusting the preparation conditions and the type of guest molecules. The mechanisms for the formation of the micro/nanocrystals are studied, and morphology-dependent optical and thermal properties typical of organic micro/nanocrystals are described. Additionally, attractive potentials of the prepared microcrystals are shown upon storing small molecules, and in optical applications. The molecular recognition abilities of CB[8] are highlighted in both its preparation process and potential application.

Abstract:Exploiting "chaperone molecule" to navigate the successful assembly energy landscapes has been extensively used in biological systems, whereas in artifical supramolecular systems the "chaperone-assisted" assembly strategy to be used for the synthesis of materials with novel structures or the structures to be hardly prepared by "conventional" methods are still far from realizing the potential functions. In this work, we present a new example of small organic molecule acting as "chaperone molecule" in the facile formation of organic molecular porous materials. This porous material is composed of pure cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) macrocycle and possesses a honeycomb-like structure with an isolated and relatively large one-dimensional (1D) nanochannel. Moreover, it has good chemical and thermal stability, and shows a good adsorption capability for large molecule loading. Importantly, with the assistance of chaperone molecules, pure CB[8] could also be recycled even from a complex aqueous solution, demonstrating a powerful purification method of CB[8] from complex systems.

Abstract:Amidst the swift progression of supramolecular chemistry, supramolecular macrocycles, which are widely recognized as effective guest receptors, particularly in host–guest chemistry, have garnered considerable attention. Cucurbit[ n ]urils (Q[ n ]s), as prominent supramolecular macrocyclic host compounds, are characterized with highly symmetrical cages consisting of 2n methylene-bridged n glycosyl urea units. Due to the inherent electrically neutral hydrophobic cavity and the densely packed carbonyl oxygen portals, Q[ n ]s possess the capability to selectively encapsulate guest molecules within their cavities while also coordinate with metal ions at their portals, which makes cucurbit[ n ]uril-based separation materials have been extensively applied in adsorptive separation processes. This review summarizes current developments in the utilization of supramolecular materials based on Q[ n ]s for separating mixed gases, benzene derivatives, metal ions, and various other substances. Furthermore, the prevailing challenges within this research domain are illustrated and a thorough perspective is given for their potential future directions. Based on numerous cutting-edge studies, this review is anticipated to furnish relevant and valuable references for researchers and inspire additional intriguing studies in related fields.

Abstract:Porous materials, especially metal-organic frameworks, covalent organic frameworks, and supramolecular organic frameworks, are widely used in heterogeneous catalysis, adsorption, and ion exchange. Cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s) suitable building units for porous materials because they possess cavities with neutral electrostatic potential, portal carbonyls with negative electrostatic potential, and outer surfaces with positive electrostatic potential, which may result in the formation of Q[n]-based supramolecular frameworks (QSFs) assembled through the interaction of guests within Q[n]s, the coordination of Q[n]s with metal ions, and outer-surface interaction of Q[n]s (OSIQ). This review summarizes the various QSFs assembled via OSIQs. The QSFs can be classified as being assembled by 1) self-induced OSIQ, 2) anion-induced OSIQ, and 3) aromatic-induced OSIQ. The design and construction of QSFs with novel structures and specific functional properties may establish a new research direction in Q[n] chemistry.

Supramolecular catalysis based on cucurbit[n]urils (CB[n]s) possesses distinct characteristics for the unique structure of CB[n]s. CB[n]s are a family of pumpkin-shaped host molecules with various molecular sizes, rigid structures, electronegative portals and wealthy host-guest chemistry. Herein, we summarize the three major mechanisms of CB[n]s based supramolecular catalysis. Owing to the structural properties of CB[n]s, CB[n]s can serve as nanoreactors and steric hindrance to modulate the reactivity of substrates. They can also catalyze the reactions by modulating the reactivity of ionized intermediates. Recent progresses on the CB[n]s based supramolecular catalysis are introduced in this Minireview and the future development in this field is discussed. It is anticipated that this review provides insights into the mechanism of CB[n]s based supramolecular catalysis and may help scientists find new opportunities in this field.

Abstract:Cucurbit[n]urils (Q[n]s) are a relatively young family of macrocycles, consisting of glycoluril units bridged by methylene groups, and their unique structures have attracted extensive attention from chemists in recent decades. Due to the presence of a rigid hydrophobic inner cavity and two polar outer portals lined with carbonyl groups, Q[n]s not only encapsulate guest species into the cavity, but also coordinate with metal ions/clusters. Considerable achievements have been obtained in the fields of Q[n]s-based host-guest chemistry, coordination chemistry, as well as the combination of host-guest and coordination chemistry. Furthermore, the outer surface of Q[n]s has been demonstrated to be capable of interacting with definite species to generate supramolecular architectures in recent years. With more in-depth research into Q[n]s, their application studies have also emerged as a hot topic. This Minireview focuses on recent advances in the potential applications of solid-state materials based on Q[n]s and their derivatives for the capture and adsorption of hazardous chemicals from a solution or a gas mixture.

Abstract:The cucurbit [n] urils (CB [n] s) constitute a family of water‐soluble macrocyclic hosts, which have a hydrophobic cavity capable of binding one or two guest molecules (Figure 6.1)[1–3]. Three points contribute to the binding between CB [n] host and guest molecules [4–6]:(i) attraction between the host and guest;(ii) desolvation of the host cavity; and (iii) desolvation of the guest. In particular, the desolvation of the CB [n] host cavity releases high‐energy water trapped in the cavity which is regarded as a non‐-classical hydrophobic effect as it has a favorable enthalpic signature. On account of their high affinities, CB [n]‐mediated host–guest interactions are of great interest in fabricating supramolecular systems with well‐defined composition and structure [7–11]. Among the cucurbit [n] uril familiy, cucurbit [8] uril (CB [8]) is a characteristic host which is capable of multiple binding with two guests (Figure 6.2). Based on whether binding different or the same guests, their complexation can be divided into heteroternary and homoternary complexations, respectively. CB [8]‐mediated heteroternary and homoternary complexes have been exploited in the construction of supramolecular polymers [12–15], supramolecular hydrogels [16, 17], supra‐amphiphiles [18–20] and other supramolecular functional self‐assembled systems [21, 22].

Abstract:New fabrication method of nanostructures is of great importance for the applications of nanoscience and nanotechnology. This review summarizes cucurbit[n]uril (CB[n])-based nanostructure fabrication and modification approaches. These strategies include the use of CB[n]s as building blocks and supramolecular crosslinkers to fabricate nanostructures, to surface modify nanostructures, and as gatekeepers to control the release of encapsulated cargo. These nanostructures are used for drug delivery, bioimaging, chemical sensing, catalysis and other applications. CB[n]s often play a vital role in the fabrication of these nanostructures, and the realization of the applications.

Abstract:PM3 and B3LYP/3-21g* calculations were performed on cu-curbit[7] uril and its complex with protonated 2, 6-bis(4,5dihydro-1H-imidazol-2yl)naphthalene. The results agreed well with the experimental observations. It indicated that in addition to van der Weals interaction and hydrophobic effect, hydrogen bonding is also an important driving force for the molecular recognition of cucurbiturils.

Abstract:A photo-responsive host guest molecular recognition between a cucurbit[7]uril host and an azobenzenecontaining guest was investigated. Based on this recognition motif, a photo-responsive supra-amphiphile was constructed. This supra-amphiphile can self-assemble into vesicles in water, which can be destroyed by UV irradiation. Abstract:This paper reports on the supramolecular self-assembly of cyclopentano cucurbit[5]uril (CyP 5 Q[5]), L-phenylalanine (L-Phe), and cadmium ions. The crystal structure is characterized using X-ray diffraction. The results show that the complex belongs to a monoclinic system with P 2 1 space group. Cd 2+ and L-Phe are coordinated in two CyP 5 Q[5] portals via hydrogen bonds and ion-dipole interactions, respectively, so that the outer wall of the cucurbit[ n ]uril forms a porous channel. Each channel consists of six supramolecular chains, which may accommodate inorganic anions, such as CdCl .

Abstract:The image shows micro-/nanosized organic crystalline particles prepared from cucurbit[8]uril (CB[8]) and its guest molecules. By taking advantage of the molecular recognition abilities of CB[8], organic micro-/nanocrystals are facilely prepared by adding guest molecules into the aqueous solution of CB[8]. Particles of different compositions and morphologies are obtained by adjusting the type or concentration of the guest molecules. Volatile guest molecules are kept stable in the particles, making the particles potentially applicable for industrial or medical purposes. The particles interfere with the propagation of light, so they may possibly also find application in microlenses.

Abstract:Multidimensional supramolecular assemblies based on cucurbit[n]uril (n = 6 or 7) were constructed via the outer-surface interactions of cucurbit[n]urils with the polyaromatic compound 4,4',4″-benzene-1,3,5-triyl-tribenzoate as a structure-directing agent. Most impressively, the cucurbit[6]uril-based assembly exhibits high selectivity for capture of cesium cations among the common alkali metal ions in a basic medium and releases the cesium cations under acidic conditions. This reversible process enables possible applications in cesium cation capture.
