Abstract:We study the competition in parental investments among students' parents using random class assignment of students. We introduce five types of investments, namely, two out-of-family investments and three intra-family investments, which cover various forms such as money, time, and parenting style. We substantiate that competition exists and is more intense for investments with better observability. Heterogeneity analyses confirm that the competition is due to parents' high educational expectations and high returns to education. Discussions on the effects of investments suggest that more effective ways of parenting are to select appropriate parenting styles and enable children to rationally participate in tutoring.
