Abstract:We examine whether regional trade agreements (RTAs) facilitate international research collaboration. First, using a two-country model of a continuum of oligopolistic industries with process research and development (R&D) investment and spillovers, we analyze whether trade liberalization through a trade agreement with shallow or deep economic integration increases the number of firms that collaborate. We then empirically investigate the effects of shallow and deep RTAs by employing data on patents with multiple inventors from different countries at the United States Patent and Trademark Office for 114 countries/regions over 1990–2015. We interpret co-inventions by inventors from different countries as evidence of international research collaboration. We find that both shallow and deep RTAs are positively associated with research collaboration among member countries, and that the effect of deep RTAs on international research collaboration is stronger than that of shallow RTAs under certain conditions.

Abstract:In contrast to the rapid integration of the world economy, many regional trade agreements (RTAs) have also emerged since the early 1990s. This contradiction has encouraged scholars and policymakers to explore the true effects of RTAs, including both regional and global trade relationships. This paper defines synthesized trade resistance and decomposes it into natural and artificial factors. Here, we separate the influence of geographical distance, economic volume, and overall increase in transportation and labor costs and use the expectation maximization algorithm to optimize the parameters and quantify the trade purity indicator, which describes the true global trade environment and relationships among countries. This indicates that although global and most regional trade relations gradually deteriorated during the period 2007–2017, RTAs generate trade relations among members, especially contributing to the relative prosperity of European Union (EU) and North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) countries. In addition, we apply the network to reflect the purity of the trade relations among countries. The effects of RTAs can be analyzed by comparing typical trade unions and trade communities, which are presented using an empirical network structure. This analysis shows that the community structure is quite consistent with some trade unions, and the representative RTAs constitute the core structure of international trade network. However, the role of trade unions has weakened, and multilateral trade liberalization has accelerated in the past decade. This means that more countries have recently tended to expand their trading partners outside of these unions rather than limit their trading activities to RTAs.

Abstract:This paper investigates the impact of Regional Trade Agreements (RTAs) on the reshaping of value chains from both domestic and regional perspectives by using national-level data from the Belt and Road countries. The findings indicate that the depth of RTAs among Belt and Road countries can not only enhance regional integration characterized by regional value chain inter-connections and promote the value chain upgrading of trading partners in the regional production system, but also facilitates the construction of domestic value chains, thus forming a new pattern of bilateral value chain reshaping. The conclusions still hold after addressing the potential endogeneity and robustness concerns. Mechanism test results show that the effects of productivity enhancement and institutional quality improvement are important channels for RTAs-deepening to promote value chain reshaping. Heterogeneity test results indicate that 'WTO-X' provisions of RTAs are more conducive to promoting value chain reshaping, and the promoting effect of RTAs-deepening on value chain reshaping is more significant for the manufacturing industry. These findings have important policy implications to further expand high-level opening-up, deepen RTAs provisions and actively participate in global governance.

Abstract:As one of the most dynamic economic phenomena nowadays, regional integration is considered to be a multi-dimensional spatial phenomenon and a multidisciplinary scientific issue. With the increase in the difficulty of multilateral free trade negotiations, the global free trade system has come to a deadlock. At the same time, many bilateral or limited multilateral regional integration organizations have been triumphantly aroused, which make regional integration become one of the most valuable research issues. The rapidly increasing number of integrated organizations and the deepening cooperation inside the organizations both show that a new round of regional integration tide is emerging. In this context, geography's unique scale, link and border perspective are important for understanding how regional integration can change the world economic pattern and its impact on national and regional development. This paper reviews the theory and development of regional integration, reexamines the rapid development of regional integration process from the perspective of scale, link and border, and expounds the network characteristics, multi-dimensional connection and multiple borders in regional integration processes. In order to better understand regional and local development, some recent researches are discussed from the perspective of "global-local" links. Some basic understandings are expounded in this paper. The practice of regional integration is showing more and more characteristics of the network, forming a network space driven by state power and based on relationships. The multi-dimensional proximity within the regional integration is the driving force for the rapid development and diversified forms. With the emergence of a large number of regional integration organizations, the construction of global scales also requires more consideration of the roles of regions and the links of multiple dimensions. Regional integration builds a new border, which is essentially based on the relationship between members, relying on the state forces to intervene and regulate trade and other relationships. It is a selective, directional and dynamic network, showing a characteristic of"re-territorialization". At the same time, the traditional territorial border is still important. Regional integration reshapes the local development model and economic geography patterns of member countries, and its institutional arrangements deeply influence the border region development and industrial geography patterns. This paper summarizes the theoretical and practical characteristics of regional integration from the perspective of economic geography, points out some related problems and some future research trends from the perspective of scale construction, internal links, border effect and multi-dimension analysis for better understanding and practicing regional integration.

Abstract:Economic globalization has caught the high attention of all nations worldwide. It is a research focus to forecast the trend of economic globalization. Many researchers measure the degree of globalization with the indexes-dependence on foreign trade and foreign capital. These indexes do not embody the essential of globalization. In view of the deficiency, we build the index of GDP linkage to analyze the process and trend of globalization. Furthermore, with this index, we finished the empirical analysis. Finally, we conclude: 1) the regionalization is the major tendency around the world; 2) the degree of among all economic regions is weakened so far.

Abstract:The European Union (EU), North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) and Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) are the three biggest regional economic cooperation organizations in the world. What roles have these three organizations played in both domestic development and the evolving global trend of regional integration? This paper investigates the inequality among these three organizations for regional economic cooperation based on cross-national parallel data from thirty-nine countries over the period 1989–2008. By using the Theil index decomposition, this paper finds that the interregional disparity is the main source of inequality. This paper also finds that intraregional disparity rose significantly from the mid-1990s. ASEAN contributes an equalizing force to the change, while NAFTA contributes a disequalizing force. From the empirical tests based on the Barro non-linear growth regression model, our results show that the whole sample and some subregional samples (ASEAN and EU) support the convergence hypothesis. ASEAN’s convergence speed is the fastest, which testifies to the fact that the convergence speed of the transition path is faster than the long-term path.

Abstract:International integration and regional integration have different effects on a country. Increased international integration initially enlarges regional gap in terms of industrial size,but then narrows it,which means that any level of international integration benefits balanced development between regions. By contrast,increased regional integration attracts more economic activities to that country,but leads to larger regional gap. In terms of welfare effects,when a country gradually increases its international integration,the welfare level of its consumers firstly rises,but then drops,while foreign consumers' welfare level is always on the rise. When a country upgrades regional integration,its own consumers' welfare always increases,while the opposite is true for foreign consumers.

Abstract:Regional integration, as an essential measurement for solving unbalanced and uncoordinated regional development, plays an important role in achieving regional sustainable development. In this study, we aimed to construct a systematic research framework to facilitate the development of regional integration. Using 31 prefecture-level cities in the urban agglomeration in the Middle Reaches of the Yangtze River (MYR-UA) as case sites, this study applied box plots, kernel density estimation, GIS visualization tools, Markov chains, and geographic detectors to reveal the dynamic spatiotemporal evolution and factors influencing regional integration from 2009 to 2018. The results indicate that the level of regional integration and its subsystem development is suboptimal in MYR-UA; the temporal characteristic shows an upward fluctuating trend, and the spatial distribution shows remarkable spatial correlation and clustering characteristics. Additionally, we found that the level of regional integration development in MYR-UA has both "path dependence" and "self-locking" effects, and the spatial lag type has a crucial impact on the degree of regional transfer stability. The dominant factors affecting regional integration development include the GDP per capita, economic openness, industrial structure, proportion of education expenditure in fiscal expenditure, urbanization rate, proportion of environmental investment in fiscal expenditure, population density, capital flow, information flow, and technology flow. Finally, based on the findings of this study, policy recommendations for promoting regional integration are proposed.

Abstract:The regional integration theory of Yangtze delta region has three theoretical origins,namely international economic integration,sub-region and regional cooperation.The integration is driven by market subject and government.The sub-regional government becomes the binary drive oriented stakeholder in the integration process because of their particular economic function under current system in China.This sort of dynamic mechanism of one body with both sides also brings the hedging integration and segmentation,which infers the tortuous process of the integration of Yangtze delta region.The value targets of the regional integration of Yangtze delta region lies in forming industrial division and scale effect,constructing world class metropolitan groups,realizing resource sharing and interest complementing,and exploring regional integrated institution with more universal significance in institutional innovation.

Abstract:When multilateral trade negotiations reach the impasse under the WTO frameworks, more and more countries are being fascinated by establishment of bilateral free trade area, as a period of bilateral trade is coming. On the basis of Cournot equilibrium, this thesis demonstrates that through setting up bilateral FTA actively, the power states will acquire much dominance in future's multilateral negotiations. That is to say, the chips in multilateral negotiations of these states will be increased. Based on the trade gravity model, it uses the American data to test and verify the reliability of the model. Finally, a conclusion will be obtained, that the multilateral negotiatons in the future will be a tussle among several interst groups.

Regional economic integration via detection of circular flow in international value-added network

Abstract:Global value chains (GVCs) are formed through value-added trade, and some regions promote economic integration by concluding regional trade agreements to promote these chains. However, there is no way to quantitatively assess the scope and extent of economic integration involving various sectors in multiple countries. In this study, we used the World Input--Output Database to create a cross-border sector-wise trade in value-added network (international value-added network (IVAN)) covering the period of 2000--2014 and evaluated them using network science methods. By applying Infomap to the IVAN, we confirmed for the first time the existence of two regional communities: Europe and the Pacific Rim. Helmholtz--Hodge decomposition was used to decompose the value flows within the region into potential and circular flows, and the annual evolution of the potential and circular relationships between countries and sectors was clarified. The circular flow component of the decomposition was used to define an economic integration index, and findings confirmed that the degree of economic integration in Europe declined sharply after the economic crisis in 2009 to a level lower than that in the Pacific Rim. The European economic integration index recovered in 2011 but again fell below that of the Pacific Rim in 2013. Moreover, sectoral analysis showed that the economic integration index captured the effect of Russian mineral resources, free movement of labor in Europe, and international division of labor in the Pacific Rim, especially in GVCs for the manufacture of motor vehicles and high-tech products.

Abstract:There are two reasons why the regional economic integration of the Yangtze River Delta has been so fast.One is the location advantage,and the other is the favorable institutional environment.The economic integration of this region derived its vitality from distinctive modes of local development as well as the impetus from both market and government,and its primary process is the optimization of resource allocation.In spite of the interregional division of labor and close cooperation in the Delta,its economic integration is still impeded by some bottleneck.The paper points out that the future of Yangtze River Delta depends on institutional innovation in regional interaction,distribution of benefits and policy integration.

Abstract:In this article, Professor Shujiro Urata of the School of Social Sciences at Waseda University and of the Research Institute for Economy, Trade and Industry, gives an overview of the various types of regional trade agreements (RTAs), and examines the background to the growing trend towards regionalism in the 1990s. Focussing on the surge in free trade agreements (FTA), he explains why FTAs have become more popular than multilateral trade liberalization under the WTO. He describes the different types and characteristics of RTAs, the economic effects of FTAs including the static and dynamic effects, and their significance for the global and Japanese economies. He concludes that if Japan does not actively participate in FTAs, and instead chooses to ''cherry pick'' from the full range of agenda items, there is a danger that it will not be considered by other countries as a worthwhile FTA partner. If so, Japan will suffer the consequences of being excluded from other FTAs.

Abstract:Based on the historical analysis,this paper divides the historical process of the regional economic integration of Yangtze River delta into three phases which include,big Shanghai economic region,develop- ment of Pudong and globalization.It analyzes the structure and dynamics of regional economic integration in Yangtze River delta,from the perspective of times serial variations that range from factor endowment, industrial divide,institutional transition,organizational compatibility,district game to location condition. It discovers that there are two engines which cause the development of the regional economic integration in Yangtze River with the local decentralization in the process of reform,opening-up and modernization of China.One is the market power produced by the process of reform,opening-up and modernization of Chi- na,the other is the regional coordination mechanism governed by local government.Factor and Product mobility acted as the main Dependent Variables in the historical process of the regional economic integra- tion,while the other factors acted as the main independent variables which include the industrial divide and scale economy induced by industrial transfer and agglomeration,the geography problem from the spatial distance,the culture effect of social network and the institutional cost.

Abstract:AbstractAfter about a quarter century of countries having pursued deep regional integration through negotiating on deep regional trade agreements (RTAs), we observed a number of historical events that symbolize the curbing of the trend of globalization in 2016. On June 24, 2016, the people of the United Kingdom voted to leave the European Union (EU) in a referendum. On November 8, 2016, Mr. Donald Trump, who proposed the “America First” policy and a number of protectionist policies, such as the withdrawal from the Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement and the construction of a substantial wall on the United States–Mexico border, during his presidential campaign, won the US presidential election.

Abstract:The Asia-Pacific region is not typically seen as one geographic or socio-economic space. Yet, 58 regional economies occupying the space of 28 million square kilometers from Turkey in the West, Russian Federation in the North, French Polynesia in the East and New Zealand in the South belong to the Economic and Social Commission of Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP). This commission provides a forum for member states that “promotes regional cooperation and collective action, assisting countries in building and sustaining shared economic growth and social equity”. In 2013, ESCAP’s members adopted the Bangkok Declaration to enhance efforts towards deeper regional economic integration. Yet this document neither proposes a concrete modality or modalities of achieving deeper integration, nor provides a sense of distance of individual countries to a “perceived” integrated Asia-Pacific. This paper aims to comprehensively quantify recent integration efforts of economies in the Asia-Pacific region. We provide an “index of integration effort” based on twelve metrics that measure the relative distance of a given economy to the region as an economic entity. Generally, we find that while the region has trended towards becoming integrated in general, both the level of integration and integration effort are inconsistent among Asia-Pacific economies. We discuss potential applications and extensions of the index in developing our perspective of the region’s economic and social dynamics.
Do Deeper Regional Trade Agreements Enhance International Technology Spillovers?

Abstract:We examine whether regional trade agreements (RTAs) enhance international technology spillovers by using a panel of patent application and citation data for 142 countries/regions during 1990–2006 at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. We use patent citation data as a proxy for technology spillovers. A gravity-like model is estimated by the negative binomial model and the fixed effects negative binomial (FXNB) model. We find that technology spillovers between two countries/regions measured by patent citations are greater if they are signatories to the same RTA. This finding is quite robust for different estimation techniques. The estimated results from the FXNB model suggest that there is no significant difference in the effects of free trade agreements and customs unions on technology spillovers. We also find that General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) and World Trade Organization (WTO) membership and participation in the Information Technology Agreement of WTO facilitate technology spillovers across signatories.

Abstract:In recent years, under the risks of anti-globalization trend and uncertainty of trade war, countries have been entering into bilateral and multilateral regional trade agreements (RTAs). This study constructs both theoretical and empirical models to examine whether these RTAs can improve the quality of exported products among Chinese manufacturing enterprises, thereby expanding on a new policy research area that focuses on improving Chinese export quality or import quality of RTAs trade partners from China. The study finds that RTAs’ clause quantity (measured by clause coverage rate) and clause quality (measured by law commitment rate) play different roles. The former can generate “spaghetti bowl” effect but the latter can significantly promote export quality for Chinese manufacturers. The study also finds that RTAs can promote balanced development among the various regions in China and that a new generation of binding clauses in the “WTO-X field” with more new clauses strongly affects efforts to improve the quality of products exported to high and upper-middle income markets. We also find that for most industries, signing high-quality RTAs helps to improve export product quality, but there are no effect for some industries with laggard or special advanced technology.

Exploring the Spatiotemporal Integration Evolution of the Urban Agglomeration Through City Networks

Abstract:Regional integration is a global trend and an integrated region consists of different cities of different sizes and functions, against which researching their organized structure is an important issue when discussing regional coordinated development. So, we construct the city networks, among which cities and their linkages are regarded as nodes and connections, to explore the spatial characteristics of a region and evaluate the integration level. The Yangtze River Delta Urban Agglomeration (YRDUA) is taken as the study area. For city nodes, this paper first evaluates the cities’ qualities comprehensively based on the multidimensional indicators during the rapid cities’ developmental period from 2005 to 2019. For city linkages, the interactions between different cities are then assessed by the improved gravity model. Then, the city networks consisting of city nodes and their linkages are constructed and analyzed by the social network analysis to deeply understand the orientations and relationships of cities in an integrated region. The results show that the developmental pace of different cities is imbalanced. The overall network of the YRDUA is relatively compact of the city-pair linkages forming the overlapping structure from primary to secondary axes, and different cities have specific functions. However, some small cities do not reach a mutual connection with big cities and face the risk of social resource outflow. In conclusion, attention to the existence of latent hierarchy should be paid to avoid the marginalization of small cities, especially under administrative intervention. The findings can enrich research on cities′ relationship and integration level of the YRDUA, and the specific characteristics of spatial organization paralleling with the leading development of the YRDUA can provide the reference to other regions under the strategy of national regional coordination.
