Abstract:Fiber reinforced polymeric composites (FRPCs) have been widely used in automotive, aircraft, airspace, marine and civil construction. However, they are flammable, thus seriously threating the safety of human beings and property. To enhance the flame retardancy of FRPCs, suitable flame-retardant treatments have been carried out, which is efficiency in enhancing the thermal stability and fire resistance. In this review, the thermal decomposition characteristic of FRPC is initially introduced to understand the necessity of flame retardnacy. Then, the flame-retardant requirements of FRPC in different applications are summarized to guide the selection of flame retardant and flame-retardant method. The main section concentrates on the flame-retardant method and mechanism as well as research status in flame retardation for FRPC. The flame-retardant methods to treat fiber, polymer and composites are discussed, and the advantages and limitations of each method are also introduced. Finally, a brief outlook at the development of the flame retardation for FRPC is summarized.

Abstract:Most organic polymeric materials have high flammability, for which the large amounts of smoke, toxic gases, heat, and melt drips produced during their burning cause immeasurable damages to human life and property every year. Despite some desirable results having been achieved by conventional flame-retardant methods, their application is encountering more and more difficulties with the ever-increasing high flame-retardant requirements such as high flame-retardant efficiency, great persistence, low release of heat, smoke, and toxic gases, and more importantly not deteriorating or even enhancing the overall properties of polymers. Under such condition, some advanced flame-retardant methods have been developed in the past years based on "all-in-one" intumescence, nanotechnology, in situ reinforcement, intrinsic char formation, plasma treatment, biomimetic coatings, etc., which have provided potential solutions to the dilemma of conventional flame-retardant methods. This review briefly outlines the development, application, and problems of conventional flame-retardant methods, including bulk-additive, bulk-copolymerization, and surface treatment, and focuses on the raise, development, and potential application of advanced flame-retardant methods. The future development of flame-retardant methods is further discussed.

Abstract:Currently, polymers are competing with metals and ceramics to realize various material characteristics, including mechanical and electrical properties. However, most polymers consist of organic matter, making them vulnerable to flames and high-temperature conditions. In addition, the combustion of polymers consisting of different types of organic matter results in various gaseous hazards. Therefore, to minimize the fire damage, there has been a significant demand for developing polymers that are fire resistant or flame retardant. From this viewpoint, it is crucial to design and synthesize thermally stable polymers that are less likely to decompose into combustible gaseous species under high-temperature conditions. Flame retardants can also be introduced to further reinforce the fire performance of polymers. In this review, the combustion process of organic matter, types of flame retardants, and common flammability testing methods are reviewed. Furthermore, the latest research trends in the use of versatile nanofillers to enhance the fire performance of polymeric materials are discussed with an emphasis on their underlying action, advantages, and disadvantages.

Abstract:Against the background of people’s increasing awareness of personal safety and property safety, the flame retardancy (FR) of materials has increasingly become the focus of attention in the field of construction engineering. A variety of materials have been developed in research and production in this field. Polymers have many advantages, such as their light weight, low water absorption, high flexibility, good chemical corrosion resistance, high specific strength, high specific modulus and low thermal conductivity, and are often applied to the field of construction engineering. However, the FR of unmodified polymer is not ideal, and new methods to make it more flame retardant are needed to enhance the FR. This article primarily introduces the flame-retardant mechanism of fire retardancy. It summarizes the preparation of polymer flame-retardant materials by adding different flame-retardant agents, and the application and research progress related to polymer flame-retardant materials in construction engineering.

Abstract:Due to the thermal and fire sensitivity of polymer bio-composite materials, especially in the case of plant-based fillers applied for them, next to intensive research on the better mechanical performance of composites, it is extremely important to improve their reaction to fire. This is necessary due to the current widespread practical use of bio-based composites. The first part of this work relates to an overview of the most commonly used techniques and different approaches towards the increasing the fire resistance of petrochemical-based polymeric materials. The next few sections present commonly used methods of reducing the flammability of polymers and characterize the most frequently used compounds. It is highlighted that despite adverse health effects in animals and humans, some of mentioned fire retardants (such as halogenated organic derivatives e.g., hexabromocyclododecane, polybrominated diphenyl ether) are unfortunately also still in use, even for bio-composite materials. The most recent studies related to the development of the flame retardation of polymeric materials are then summarized. Particular attention is paid to the issue of flame retardation of bio-based polymer composites and the specifics of reducing the flammability of these materials. Strategies for retarding composites are discussed on examples of particular bio-polymers (such as: polylactide, polyhydroxyalkanoates or polyamide-11), as well as polymers obtained on the basis of natural raw materials (e.g., bio-based polyurethanes or bio-based epoxies). The advantages and disadvantages of these strategies, as well as the flame retardants used in them, are highlighted.

Abstract:The progress of flame retarded polymer nanocomposites and coatings in China over the past decades are described in this review. Emphasis on flammability performance of polymer nanocomposites containing nanofillers, mainly layered inorganic compounds, nanofibers and nanoparticles, combined with conventional flame retardant additives are addressed based on the open literature. Polymeric coatings with improved flame retardancy prepared using a wide variety of additives and UV‐curing technology are also introduced. Derived from this research, the combination of multiple methods and technologies including catalyst and nanotechnology, is predicted to have a high probability to enhance char formation and improve the flame retardancy of polymeric materials. Abstract:Because of the growing concern about environmental preservation, polymers derived from renewable resources are receiving a lot of attention in order to increase their durability and lower their carbon footprint. Progressively, in many technical settings, renewables are consumed rather than short-term items. Nevertheless, given the possible fire risk and their participation in our everyday routines, the flame backwardness of these polymers, among other purposes, needs to be addressed for industrial uses. Traditional numerous excellent flame retardants based on phosphorus, nitrogen, sulfur, metal salts, metal oxides, and halogen compounds were created in order to address this possible hazard. Nevertheless, upon combustion, a few of these components, especially halogen flame retardants, produced a huge amount of smoke, abrasive fumes, and hazardous materials. One of the motivations for limiting the usage of halogen flame retardants and driving the introduction of halogen-free alternatives was a rise in environmental and ecological issues. In addition, propelling the development of bio-based polymers and additives from renewable origins is driven by growing worries about reducing the environmental impact of materials. As a consequence, increased emphasis has been placed on the improvement of sustainable flame-retardant solutions for developing synthetic polymers. Due to their high availability, intrinsic properties, and application as flame retardants for polymers, biomass compounds are studied in this chapter as a favorable approach to the provision of materials with ameliorated fire tolerance.

Abstract:It would be difficult to imagine how modern life across the globe would operate in the absence of synthetic polymers. Although these materials (mostly in the form of plastics) have revolutionized our daily lives, there are consequences to their use, one of these being their high levels of flammability. For this reason, research into the development of flame retardant (FR) additives for these materials is of tremendous importance. However, many of the FRs prepared are problematic due to their negative impacts on human health and the environment. Furthermore, their preparations are neither green nor sustainable since they require typical organic synthetic processes that rely on fossil fuels. Because of this, the need to develop more sustainable and non-toxic options is vital. Many research groups have turned their attention to preparing new bio-based FR additives for synthetic polymers. This review explores some of the recent examples made in this field.

Abstract:As an abundant and attractive element, the emergence of new carbon-based materials brings revolutionary development in material science and technology. Carbon-based materials have spawned considerable interest for fabricating polymer composites/nanocomposites with greatly improved mechanical, thermal, gas barrier, conductivity, and flame retardant performance. In this review, the importance of carbon-based materials and the necessity of fire resistance for polymeric materials are initially introduced. Then, the fundamental flame retardant mechanisms and experimental analytical techniques are described to understand the relationship between structures and flame retardant properties. The main section is dedicated to the preparation and properties of multifunctional polymer composites/nanocomposites with carbon-based materials, with special emphasis on the flame retardant properties of these materials. A wide variety of carbon-based materials are discussed for use in flame retardant polymer nanocomposite, including graphite, graphene, carbon nanotubes, fullerenes as well as some new emerging carbon forms (carbon nitride, carbon aerogels, etc). Finally, a brief outlook at the developments in carbon-based materials for flame retardant polymeric composites is given by discussing the major progress, opportunities, and challenges.

Abstract:Rare earth elements, the collection for 17 chemical elements in the third main group B on the periodic table of chemical elements, have received intensive attention in recent years. Based on the special electronic structure and physiochemical properties, rare earth elements are used as efficient flame retardants for polymers. Nowadays, various methods have been used for the synthesis of rare earth-based flame retardants, including precipitation, in situ polymerization and self-assembly methods. To date, zero-dimensional (0D), one-dimensional (1D), two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) rare earth-based flame retardants have been developed to impart excellent fire safety to versatile polymeric materials, e.g. polyester, epoxy resin, polyurethane and polyolefin. The processing methods and flame retardancy of rare earth-based flame retardant/polymer composites are summarized. Subsequently, the flame-retardant mechanism of rare earth-based flame retardants in polymers is reviewed. Finally, the challenges and development prospects of rare earth-based flame retardant/polymer composites are discussed.

Abstract:Polymer composites filled with metal derivatives have been widely used in recent years, particularly as flame retardants, due to their superior characteristics, including high thermal behavior, low environmental degradation, and good fire resistance. The hybridization of metal and polymer composites produces various favorable properties, making them ideal materials for various advanced applications. The fire resistance performance of polymer composites can be enhanced by increasing the combustion capability of composite materials through the inclusion of metallic fireproof materials to protect the composites. The final properties of the metal-filled thermoplastic composites depend on several factors, including pore shape and distribution and morphology of metal particles. For example, fire safety equipment uses polyester thermoplastic and antimony sources with halogenated additives. The use of metals as additives in composites has captured the attention of researchers worldwide due to safety concern in consideration of people’s life and public properties. This review establishes the state-of-art flame resistance properties of metals/polymer composites for numerous industrial applications.

Abstract:Polymer matrix is vulnerable to fire hazards and needs to add flame retardants to enhance its performance and make its application scenarios more extensive. At this stage, it is more necessary to add multiple flame-retardant elements and build a multi-component synergistic system. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have been studied for nearly three decades since their introduction. MOFs are known for their structural advantages but have only been applied to flame-retardant polymers for a relatively short period of time. In this paper, we review the development of MOFs utilized as flame retardants and analyze the flame-retardant mechanisms in the gas phase and condensed phase from the original MOF materials, modified MOF composites, and MOF-derived composites as flame retardants, respectively. The effects of carbon-based materials, phosphorus-based materials, nitrogen-based materials, and biomass on the flame-retardant properties of polymers are discussed in the context of MOFs. The construction of MOF multi-structured flame retardants is also introduced, and a variety of MOF-based flame retardants with different morphologies are shown to broaden the ideas for subsequent research.

Abstract:An overview of recent developments of flame-retardant nylon 6 and nylon 66 is presented in this paper. The research of flame-retardant composites is mainly through adding flame-retardant elements to nylon molecules, which can be divided into physical addition and chemical addition. Each of these two methods has its advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, according to the different addition methods and flame-retardant mechanism of various flame-retardants, the flame-retardant properties of phosphorus flame-retardants, nitrogen flame-retardants, bio based flame-retardants and synergistic systems, as well as their effects on the mechanical properties of flame-retardant composites have been critically reviewed and summarized. This review will objectively explore and give new direction for the development of the flame-retardant nylon materials, which would be more accessible to the emerging field of materials science.

Abstract:In this chapter, the recent development of graphene-based flame-retardant polymer composites has been reviewed and summarized. The synthetic methods of graphene-based flame retardants and the preparation strategies of the graphene-based polymer composites are first introduced. Subsequently, special emphasis has been placed on properties, especially flame-retardant characteristics of the graphene-based flame-retardant polymer composites. Compared to conventional flame retardants, graphene and its derivatives show superior flame-retardant efficacy as well as other enhanced performances including thermal stability, mechanical strength, and electrical conductivity. Finally, a summary of the opportunities and challenges for graphene-based flame retardants is given to guide the future development of this new class of flame-retardant material.

Abstract:Plastic combustion has adverse impacts on air quality and human health. In this work, a novel non-aromatic Si, P, N-containing hyperbranched flame retardant (HPNSi) was synthesized and proposed to epoxy resin. The modified epoxy exhibits not only reduced fire hazards and less smoke production in favor of eco-friendly, but also remarkable mechanical properties and lower curing temperature for facile processability. With 6 wt% incorporation, the peak heat release and total smoke production were reduced by 29.6% and 20.7%, respectively, and the time to ignition (TTI) increased as well as the fire growth rate (FIGRA) dropped off, which is of vital significance for saving lives in a fire. Meanwhile, the impact strength and flexural strength greatly enhanced by 72.9% and 22.0%, while its curing temperature was lower than that of controlled EP system. Interestingly, we also found that the solid carbon particles on the char surface apparently reduced from SEM image. The blending of its unique non-aromatic hyperbranched structure containing Si, P, N with epoxy architecture was responsible for the desirable integrated enhancement. The broad possibilities in the field of flame-retardant plastic with reduced fire hazards and excellent integrated performance enable the novel hyperbranched flame retardant a bright future for application.

Abstract:Composites are popular in construction engineering due to their low water absorption, good chemical and corrosion resistance, lightweight, high specific strength, high specific modulus, and low thermal conductivity. The flame retardancy (FR) of composite materials has increasingly become the focus of attention in the field of construction engineering. With growing awareness of personal and property safety, a wide range of flame-retardant composites has been developed over the years through research and development. The FR of an unmodified polymer composite is not optimal, and therefore, many innovative methods for making more advanced flame-retardant materials have been developed. The aim of this review is to provide detailed literature on flame-retardant composites. The structure of this paper consists of evolution of flame-retardant materials, their manufacturing techniques, flame-retardant composites, their properties and characterization, applications, and challenges related to of FR composites. The primary focus of this review is to analyze the mechanism of fire retardancy and to summarize the preparation of flame-retardant polymer materials by adding various flame-retardant agents.

Abstract:Unsaturated polyester resins (UPR) are broadly applied in chemical, construction, transportation and electrical fields, etc. However, UPR materials are extremely flammable. Through radiation, conduction and convection, the released heat brings serious thermal hazards to surrounding life and the environment. Meanwhile, the combustion of UPR also releases a vast of toxic pyrolysis gases and smoke, causing extremely serious non-thermal hazards, endangering life and health, reducing fire visibility and hindering escape and rescue efforts. Therefore, the flame retardant modification of UPR materials is an inevitable measure to reduce its flammability and broaden its application breadth. In this review, the flammability of UPR materials is firstly analyzed from the perspective of their compositions and structures. Meanwhile, based on the differences in preparation methods of flame retardant UPR (FR-UPR) in literature research, it is divided into additive flame retardant, intrinsic flame retardant and interfacial flame retardant methods. The relationship between the highly efficient flame retardant structures and the properties, and the gaseous-phase flame retardant and condensed-phase mechanisms in FR-UPR composites are analyzed. Compared with traditional additive flame retardants, polymeric flame retardants, nanosheet flame retardants and intrinsic flame retardant method are important directions for the future development of FR-UPR composites. In addition, the interfacial flame retardant method can effectively improve the interfacial adhesion and flame retardant properties of fiber-reinforced UPR composites, and also has application prospects. This review analyzes the current challenges faced by FR-UPR, and looks forward to its possible future development directions to guide the preparation and application of high-performance FR-UPR.
