Abstract:The technology of carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) has great potential to alleviate the greenhouse effect. CO2 sequestration and enhanced shale gas recovery (CO2-ESGR) is a crucial component of CCUS. It is of great significance for CS-ESGR to study the dynamic adsorption characteristic of CO2 in the organic pore of shale. The dynamic adsorption properties of CO2 can reflect the dynamic adsorption mechanism, which can provide a theoretical reference for practical applications. The impact of different factors on the final adsorption efficiency and results has been analyzed in previous research studies. However, less attention has been paid to the dynamic adsorption process. In this study, a shale organic pore model composed of 1 and 4 nm pores connected by 8 nm pores was established. The effects of pore size and pressure on the dynamic process of CO2 diffusion and adsorption were investigated by a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation method. It was found that different pore sizes lead to different density distributions. There is no free zone in the micropore with a pore size of 1 nm, which is due to a combination of pore effects and overlapping effects. However, due to pore size limitations, the maximum adsorption in the 1 nm pore is low; mesopores larger than 1 nm are more conducive to realistic adsorption and storage. In addition, it is beneficial for higher adsorption rate and stability with increasing pressure, which in turn improves the adsorption performance. The mechanism of dynamic adsorption promoted by high pressure is revealed in this study, which provides a reference for practical applications.
