Abstract:In this paper, we show that there is a Cantor set of initial conditions in the planar four-body problem such that all four bodies escape to infinity in a finite time, avoiding collisions. This proves the Painlevé conjecture for the four-body case, and thus settles the last open case of the conjecture.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a restricted four-body problem called the planar two-center-two-body problem. In the plane, we have two fixed centers Q 1 and Q 2 of masses 1, and two moving bodies Q 3 and Q 4 of masses ${\mu\ll 1}$. They interact via Newtonian potential. Q 3 is captured by Q 2, and Q 4 travels back and forth between two centers. Based on a model of Gerver, we prove that there is a Cantor set of initial conditions that lead to solutions of the Hamiltonian system whose velocities are accelerated to infinity within finite time avoiding all earlier collisions. This problem is a simplified model for the planar four-body problem case of the Painlevé conjecture.
A New Mechanism for Noncollision Singularities

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the existence of noncollision singularities in the planar four-body problem with a model different from [19]. In this model, the acceleration can be arbitrarily fast and the masses can be comparable. This work provides a general principle to construct noncollision singularities as well as other related orbits with complicited dynamics. It not only answers a question in [19] but also solves an analogous version of a conjecture of Anosov.
On the Problem of Infinite Spin in Total Collisions of the Planar N-Body Problem

Abstract:For the planar $N$-body problem, we first introduce a class of moving frame suitable for orbits near central configurations, especially for total collision orbits, which is the main new ingredient of this paper. The moving frame allows us to reduce the degeneracy of the problem according to intrinsic symmetrical characteristic of the $N$-Body problem. First, we give a full answer to the infinite spin or $Painlev\acute{e}$-$Wintner$ problem in the case corresponding to nondegenerate central configurations. Then following some original ideas of C.L. Siegel, especially the idea of normal forms, and applying the theory of central manifolds, we give a partial answer to the problem in the case corresponding to degenerate central configurations. We completely answer the problem in the case corresponding to central configurations with one degree of degeneracy. Combining some results on the planar nonhyperbolic equilibrium point, we give a criterion for the case corresponding to central configurations with two degrees of degeneracy. We further answer the problem in the case corresponding to all known degenerate central configurations of four-body. Therefore, we solve the problem for almost every choice of the masses of the four-body problem. Finally, we give a measure of the set of initial conditions leading to total collisions.

Super-hyperbolic orbits and non-collision singularities in a four-body problem

Abstract: In this paper, we prove the existence of super-hyperbolic orbits in four-body problem, which solves a conjecture of Marchal-Saari. We also prove the existence of noncollision singularities in the same model, which solves a conjecture of Anosov. Moreover, the two type of solutions coexist for certain mass ratios. We also make a conjecture on the classification of final motions of N-body problem, in which the superhyperbolic type of orbits is one of the building blocks.
Dynamics of Non-polar Solutions to the Discrete Painlevé I Equation

Abstract:This manuscript develops a novel understanding of non-polar solutions of the discrete Painlevé I equation (dP1). As the non-autonomous counterpart of an analytically completely integrable difference equation, this system is endowed with a rich dynamical structure. In addition, its non-polar solutions, which grow without bounds as the iteration index $n$ increases, are of particular relevance to other areas of mathematics. We combine theory and asymptotics with high-precision numerical simulations to arrive at the following picture: when extended to include backward iterates, known non-polar solutions of dP1 form a family of heteroclinic connections between two fixed points at infinity. One of these solutions, the Freud orbit of orthogonal polynomial theory, is a singular limit of the other solutions in the family. Near their asymptotic limits, all solutions converge to the Freud orbit, which follows invariant curves of dP1, when written as a 3-D autonomous system, and reaches the point at positive infinity along a center manifold. This description leads to two important results. First, the Freud orbit tracks sequences of period-1 and 2 points of the autonomous counterpart of dP1 for large positive and negative values of $n$, respectively. Second, we identify an elegant method to obtain an asymptotic expansion of the iterates on the Freud orbit for large positive values of $n$. The structure of invariant manifolds emerging from this picture contributes to a deeper understanding of the global analysis of an interesting class of discrete dynamical systems.

Abstract:We study the problem: How many singular points of a solution λ(t) to the Painleve VI equation with parameter ( 8 , −1 8 , 1 8 , 3 8 ) might have in C \ {0, 1}? Here t0 ∈ C \ {0, 1} is called a singular point of λ(t) if λ(t0) ∈ {0, 1, t0, ∞}. Based on Hitchin’s formula, we explore the connection of this problem with Green function and the Eisenstein series of weight one. Among other things, we prove: (i) There are only three solutions which have no singular points in C \ {0, 1}. (ii) For a special type of solutions (called real solutions here), any branch of a solution has at most two singular points (in particular, at most one pole) in C \ {0, 1}. (iii) Any Riccati solution has singular points in C \ {0, 1}. (iv) For each N ≥ 5 and N 6= 6, we calculate the number of the real j-values of zeros of the Eisenstein series EN 1 (τ; k1, k2) of weight one, where (k1, k2) runs over [0, N − 1]2 with gcd(k1, k2, N) = 1. The geometry of the critical points of the Green function on a flat torus Eτ , as τ varies in the moduliM1, plays a fundamental role in our analysis of the Painleve IV equation. In particular, the conjectures raised in [22] on the shape of the domain Ω5 ⊂ M1, which consists of tori whose Green function has extra pair of critical points, are completely solved here.
The Painlevé equivalence problem for a constrained 3D system

Abstract:In this paper we propose a geometric approach to study Painlevé equations appearing as constrained systems of three first-order ordinary differential equations. We illustrate this approach on a system of three first-order differential equations arising in the theory of semi-classical orthogonal polynomials. We show that it can be restricted to a system of two first-order differential equations in two different ways on an invariant hypersurface. We build the space of initial conditions for each of these restricted systems and verify that they exhibit the Painlevé property from a geometric perspective. Utilising the Painlevé identification algorithm we also relate this system to the Painlevé VI equation and we build its global Hamiltonian structure. Finally, we prove that the autonomous limit of the original system is Liouville integrable, and the level curves of its first integrals are elliptic curves, which leads us to conjecture that the 3D system itself also possesses the Painlevé property without the need to restrict it to the invariant hypersurface.

Abstract:Painleve VI equation is well known as a class of nonlinear ODEs whose solutions govern the isomonodromic deformation of a second order linear Fuchsian ODE with five regular singularities on CP1. We propose the question how the monodromy effects the behavior of solutions. In this paper, the second of a series devoted to this question, we study Painleve VI equation with parameters ( (2n+1)(2) /8 , -1/8,8/1,3/8) with n is an element of N. A solution lambda(t) is called unitarizable if the monodromy group of the associated linear ODE of lambda(t) is conjugated to a subgroup of the unitary group SU(2). For example, any algebraic solution is unitarizable. In Part I [7] we studied the special case n = 1. In this paper we show that (i) Any unitarizable solution has no poles in R\{0, 1} for all n is an element of N. (ii) For n = 2, there are only 3 unitarizable solutions without poles in C\ {0, 1}. (iii) For n = 2, every single -valued branch of any unitarizable solution in C \ (-infinity, 1] has at most 5 poles (this upper bound is optimal). These results are obtained by applying the PDE result of a singular Liouville equation on flat tori and the pre -modular form Z(r,s)((m)) (tau) introduced in [15, 29]. The study of the zero structure of Z(r,s)((m)) (tau) is of independent interest.

Abstract:In this paper, we first give a new interpretation of Jimbo's boundary condition for the generic Painlevé VI transcendents, as the shrinking phenomenon in long time behaviour of the Jimbo-Miwa-Mori-Sato equation with rank $n=3$. We then interpret Jimbo's monodromy formula from the viewpoint of the isomonodromy deformation with respect to irregular singularities.

On the asymptotics of real solutions for the Painlevé I equation

Abstract:In this paper, we revisit the asymptotic formulas of real Painlevé I transcendents as the independent variable tends to negative infinity, which were initially derived by Kapaev with the complex WKB method. Using the Riemann-Hilbert method, we improve the error estimates of the oscillatory type asymptotics and provide precise error estimates of the singular type asymptotics. We also establish the corresponding asymptotics for the associated Hamiltonians of real Painlevé I transcendents. In addition, two typos in the mentioned asymptotic behaviors in literature are corrected.

Abstract:Painlevé transcendents are usually considered as complex functions of a complex variable, but, in applications, it is often the real cases that are of interest. We propose a classification of the real solutions of Painlevé IV (or, more precisely, symmetric Painlevé IV) using a sequence of symbols describing their asymptotic behavior and singularities. We give rules for the sequences that are allowed (depending on the parameter values). We look in detail at the existence of globally nonsingular real solutions and determine the dimensions of the spaces of such solutions with different asymptotic behaviors. We show that for a generic choice of the parameters, there exists a unique finite sequence of singularities for which Painlevé IV has a two-parameter family of solutions with this singularity sequence. There also exist solutions with singly infinite and doubly infinite sequences of singularities, and we identify which such sequences are possible. We look at the singularity sequences (and asymptotics) of special solutions of Painlevé IV. We also show two other results concerning special solutions: rational solutions can be obtained as the solution of a set of polynomial equations, and other special solutions can be obtained as the solution of a first-order differential equation.

On Non-simple blowup solutions of Liouville equation

Abstract:For Liouville equation with quantized singular sources, the non-simple blowup phenomenon has been a major difficulty for years. It was conjectured by the first two authors that the non-simple blowup phenomenon does not occur if the equation is defined on the unit ball with Dirichlet boundary condition. In this article we not only completely settle this conjecture in its entirety, but also extend our result to cover any bounded domain. Since the main theorem in this article rules out the non-simple phenomenon in commonly observed applications, it may pave the way for advances in degree counting programs, uniqueness of blowup solutions and construction of solutions, etc.

Remarks on singular solutions of the Euler equations

Abstract:We examine the blow-up claims of the incompressible Euler equations for several specific flow-fields, (1) the columnar eddies in the vicinity of stagnation; (2) a quasi-three-dimensional structure for illustrating oscillations and concentrations in shears; (3) a 2-and-1/2D flow. We assert that these claimed finite-time singularities are not genuine. Over the whole space, the potential or the velocity coincides with singularities of harmonic functions. We show that the existence of the potential for unique velocity is necessary but insufficient, as the velocity fields are merely specified up to multiples of the curl of a vector potential, which satisfies a system of degenerated Laplace's equations. We have derived several closed-form formulas in simply-connected domains, as well as orthogonal curvilinear co-ordinates. It follows that steady solutions of Euler's equations are indeterminate. Hence, use of singular potential flow in expounding fluid motions is inept. The formulation of the primitive variables (velocity and pressure) gives rise to non-unique flow fields. In essence, the notion of a finite-time singularity is an ill-defined proposition. In Appendix A, we show that the well-posedness claim (Yudovich, 1995) of planar vorticity in Lebesgue's class has been made on the basis of flawed technicalities. Certain inequalities of functional analysis play key roles in the regularity study. In Appendix B, we assert that their derivations have not been rigorously formulated. Concretely, applications of Sobolev's inequality (as well as Ladyzhenskaya's inequalities) to non-trivial solenoidal velocity fields are unattainable. There have been claims of singular flow solutions in the technical literature. However, a large majority of the deductions rely on these imprecise functional inequalities and hence suffer from logical inconsistency.

Abstract:This article concerns the formation of finite-time singularities in solutions to quasilinear hyperbolic systems with small initial data. We propose a universal test function method that works for many nonlinear hyperbolic systems arising from physical applications. We first present a simpler proof of the main result in the work of Sideris [Commun. Math. Phys. 101(4), 475–485 (1985)]: the global classical solution is non-existent for compressible Euler equations even for some small initial data. Then, we apply this approach to nonlinear magnetohydrodynamics in two space dimensions. Finally, we consider second order quasilinear hyperbolic systems with quadratic nonlinearity arising from elastodynamics of isotropic hyperelastic materials by ignoring the cubic and higher order terms. Under some restriction on the coefficients of the nonlinear terms that imply genuine nonlinearity, we show that the classical solutions to these equations can still blow up in finite time even if the initial data are small enough.
