Abstract:The multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 to hydrocarbons or alcohols is highly attractive in a sustainable energy economy, and the rational design of electrocatalysts is vital to achieve these reactions efficiently. Single‐atom electrocatalysts are promising candidates due to their well‐defined coordination configurations and unique electronic structures, which are critical for delivering high activity and selectivity and may accelerate the explorations of the activity origin at atomic level as well. Although much effort has been devoted to multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 on single‐atom electrocatalysts, there are still no reviews focusing on this emerging field and constructive perspectives are also urgent to be addressed. Herein recent advances in how to design efficient single‐atom electrocatalysts for multi‐electron reduction of CO 2 , with emphasis on strategies in regulating the interactions between active sites and key reaction intermediates, are summarized. Such interactions are crucial in designing active sites for optimizing the multi‐electron reduction steps and maximizing the catalytic performance. Different design strategies including regulation of metal centers, single‐atom alloys, non‐metal single‐atom catalysts, and tandem catalysts, are discussed accordingly. Finally, current challenges and future opportunities for deep electroreduction of CO 2 are proposed.

Abstract:Carbon monoxide and formic acid play a signi ﬁ cant role in industrial processes and are exceedingly economical C 1 products in electrochemical CO 2 reduction reactions (ECR). To improve the yield and catalytic activity in ECR processes, numerous researchers have optimized catalysts and upgraded the electrolyzer. An increase in the electrocatalytic current density and production yield can signi ﬁ cantly enable industrial electrochemical conversion from CO 2 to CO/HCOOH. However, the crucial factor restricting the industrialization of ECR is the lack of high-e ﬃ ciency catalysts. Thus, the development of e ﬃ cient catalysts for ECR has been ongoing for decades. Traditional nanostructure catalysts su ﬀ er from poor product selectivity, unstable structure, and inhomogeneous catalytic active centers, seriously a ﬀ ecting the industrial process. In contrast, single-atom catalysts (SACs) process a uniform coordination environment of active centers, maximum atom-utilization e ﬃ ciency, and impressive stability, which are suitable as catalysts for industrial ECR. This perspective highlights and summarizes the designed coordination of SACs to obtain a high yield of CO/HCOOH. Moreover, we discuss the fabrication of the electrolyzer and the method of techno-economic assessment (TEA). Finally, we summarize the opportunities and challenges for ECR in industrial processes.

Abstract:The development of highly active and durable catalysts for electrochemical reduction of CO2 (ERC) to CH4 in aqueous media is an efficient and environmentally friendly solution to address global problems in energy and sustainability. In this work, an electrocatalyst consisting of single Zn atoms supported on microporous N-doped carbon was designed to enable multielectron transfer for catalyzing ERC to CH4 in 1 M KHCO3 solution. This catalyst exhibits a high Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 85%, a partial current density of -31.8 mA cm-2 at a potential of -1.8 V versus saturated calomel electrode, and remarkable stability, with neither an obvious current drop nor large FE fluctuation observed during 35 h of ERC, indicating a far superior performance than that of dominant Cu-based catalysts for ERC to CH4. Theoretical calculations reveal that single Zn atoms largely block CO generation and instead facilitate the production of CH4.

Abstract:The electroreduction of CO2 to high‐value products is a promising approach for achieving carbon neutrality. Among these products, formic acid stands out as having the most potential for industrialization due to its optimal economic value in terms of consumption and output. In recent years, the Faraday efficiency of formic acid from CO2 electroreduction has reached 90~100%. However, this high selectivity cannot be maintained for extended periods under high currents to meet industrial requirements. This paper reviews excellent work from the perspective of catalyst stability, summarizing and discussing the performance of typical catalysts. Strategies for preparing stable and highly active catalysts are also briefly described. This review may offer a useful data reference and valuable guidance for the future design of long‐stability catalysts.

Abstract:The CO2 reduction reaction driven by sustainable electrical energy to value-added hydrocarbons is highly attractive because it can address both energy and environmental issues. The precise and rational development of corresponding electrocatalysts is of great importance to these kinds of reactions. Single-atom catalysts with unique electronic structures and coordination environments have become promising candidates, which may offer enhanced electrocatalytic performance. Herein, we summarize the recent development in the efficient fabrication of single-atom catalysts and their further application in CO2 reduction. The various strategies for SACs preparation and characterization methods are highlighted to give a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between metal active sites and catalytic ability. The reaction mechanisms of electronic CO2 reduction over single-atom catalysts are elaborated. Finally, the challenges and perspectives for the implementation of single-atom catalysts in CO2 reduction are discussed.

Abstract:Electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) employs electricity to store renewable energy in the form of reduction products. The activity and selectivity of the reaction depend on the inherent properties of electrode materials. Single-atom alloys (SAAs) exhibit high atomic utilization efficiency and unique catalytic activity, making them promising alternatives to precious metal catalysts. In this study, density functional theory (DFT) was employed to predict stability and high catalytic activity of Cu/Zn (101) and Pd/Zn (101) catalysts in the electrochemical environment at the single-atom reaction site. The mechanism of C2 products (glyoxal, acetaldehyde, ethylene, and ethane) produced by electrochemical reduction on the surface was elucidated. The C-C coupling process occurs through the CO dimerization mechanism, and the formation of the *CHOCO intermediate proves beneficial, as it inhibits both HER and CO protonation. Furthermore, the synergistic effect between single atoms and Zn results in a distinct adsorption behavior of intermediates compared to traditional metals, giving SAAs unique selectivity towards the C2 mechanism. At lower voltages, the Zn (101) single-atom alloy demonstrates the most advantageous performance in generating ethane on the surface, while acetaldehyde and ethylene exhibit significant certain potential. These findings establish a theoretical foundation for the design of more efficient and selective carbon dioxide catalysts.

Abstract:The balance of the carbon cycle is destroyed by the increasing emissions of greenhouse gases into the Earth's atmosphere, which limits the sustainable development of human beings. Electrocatalytic reduction of CO2 under ambient conditions is an effective method to solve this issue by converting CO2 to value-added chemicals or fuels. In recent years, metal nanoclusters (NCs) and single atom catalysts (SACs) have received much attention in electrochemical energy conversion. In this review, we mainly focus on the electrocatalytic properties of noble metal and transition metal catalysts at a sub-nanometer or single-atom scale, with special attention paid to their catalytic activity and selectivity as well as the catalytic mechanism towards different products. Their main advantages and challenges are also highlighted. The purpose of this review is to give a comprehensive understanding and inspire further exploration of more effective catalysts for electrochemical CO2 reduction.

Abstract:AbstractSingle‐atom catalysts (SACs) are of great interest because of their ultrahigh activity and selectivity. However, it is difficult to construct model SACs according to a general synthetic method, and therefore, discerning differences in activity of diverse single‐atom catalysts is not straightforward. Herein, a general strategy for synthesis of single‐atom metals implanted in N‐doped carbon (M1‐N‐C; M=Fe, Co, Ni and Cu) has been developed starting from multivariate metal–organic frameworks (MOFs). The M1‐N‐C catalysts, featuring identical chemical environments and supports, provided an ideal platform for differentiating the activity of single‐atom metal species. When employed in electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, Ni1‐N‐C exhibited a very high CO Faradaic efficiency (FE) up to 96.8 % that far surpassed Fe1‐, Co1‐ and Cu1‐N‐C. Remarkably, the best‐performer, Ni1‐N‐C, even demonstrated excellent CO FE at low CO2 pressures, thereby representing a promising opportunity for the direct use of dilute CO2 feedstock.

Abstract:Limiting global carbon dioxide (CO2) emission is imperative to alleviate global warming and meet the growing energy demand. Electrocatalytic CO2 reduction is a promising approach for achieving this goal. The utilization of single atom-based catalysts (SACs) has garnered substantial attention in this particular field. Although noble metal SACs offer many advantages in CO2 reduction, their high cost and scarcity have deterred many researchers. Consequently, the focus has shifted toward low-priced transition metals, which have shown better performance than some rare metals. This comprehensive review focuses on the research advances in electrocatalysis for CO2 reduction reaction using SACs in the past five years. The main synthesis strategies of SACs in recent years are also summarized in detail. Furthermore, based on the difference in the catalytic performance and stability of different catalysts, the review summarizes the performance of non-noble metal SACs (such as Fe, Ni, Co, Mn, Cu, Sn, and Zn) with single metal sites in CO2 reduction reaction. The discussion of the potential mechanisms is included. Finally, the review ends by presenting an outlook on the difficulties and possibilities inherent in this developing area of single atom electrocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Abstract:Electrochemical CO2 reduction (ECR) to value-added chemicals offers a promising approach to mitigate net carbon emission but presents challenges for chemistry because of the high energy barrier originating from CO2 activation or product desorption, as well as the limited fundamental understanding of the reaction mechanism. Herein, a diatomic electrocatalyst with nitrogen-doped porous carbon-anchored homonuclear Fe2N6 sites was precisely prepared for efficiently reducing CO2 to CO. The catalyst achieves CO Faradic efficiency up to 96.0% at −0.6 V (RHE) and a Tafel slope of only 60 mV dec–1, much superior to the single-atom Fe catalyst. Density functional theory calculations reveal that neighboring Fe–Fe centers in the Fe2N6 site facilitate the CO2 activation process via concurrently bonding the C and O atoms of the CO2 molecule. Meanwhile, the reaction barrier of CO desorption on the Fe2N6 site is decreased by the synergy of the dual Fe center, as the distinct CO-adsorbed configuration of the Fe2N6 site is inclined to uptake a second CO2 molecule. This work contributes fundamental understanding of ECR mechanisms and provides deep insights into the rational design of efficient ECR catalysts.

Abstract:The electrochemical CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) is of great importance to tackle the rising CO2 concentration in the atmosphere. The CO2RR can be driven by renewable energy sources, producing precious chemicals and fuels, with the implementation of this process largely relying on the development of low‐cost and efficient electrocatalysts. Recently, a range of heterogeneous and potentially low‐cost single‐atom catalysts (SACs) containing non‐precious metals coordinated to earth‐abundant elements have emerged as promising candidates for the CO2RR. Unfortunately, the real catalytically active centers and the key factors that govern the catalytic performance of these SACs remain ambiguous. Here, this ambiguity is addressed by developing a fundamental understanding of the CO2RR‐to‐CO process on SACs, as CO accounts for the major product from CO2RR on SACs. The reaction mechanism, the rate‐determining steps, and the key factors that control the activity and selectivity are analyzed from both experimental and theoretical studies. Then, the synthesis, characterization, and the CO2RR performance of SACs are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future pathways are highlighted in the hope of guiding the design of the SACs to promote and understand the CO2RR on SACs.

Abstract:Abstract Single-atom catalysts (SACs) are promising candidates to catalyze electrochemical CO 2 reduction (ECR) due to maximized atomic utilization. However, products are usually limited to CO instead of hydrocarbons or oxygenates due to unfavorable high energy barrier for further electron transfer on synthesized single atom catalytic sites. Here we report a novel partial-carbonization strategy to modify the electronic structures of center atoms on SACs for lowering the overall endothermic energy of key intermediates. A carbon-dots-based SAC margined with unique CuN 2 O 2 sites was synthesized for the first time. The introduction of oxygen ligands brings remarkably high Faradaic efficiency (78%) and selectivity (99% of ECR products) for electrochemical converting CO 2 to CH 4 with current density of 40 mA·cm -2 in aqueous electrolytes, surpassing most reported SACs which stop at two-electron reduction. Theoretical calculations further revealed that the high selectivity and activity on CuN 2 O 2 active sites are due to the proper elevated CH 4 and H 2 energy barrier and fine-tuned electronic structure of Cu active sites.

Abstract:Electroreduction of CO2 into value-added products is an effective approach to remit the environmental and energy issues. However, the development of an effective, accessible, and simple method for mass production of electrocatalyst is challenging. Herein, we demonstrate the solid-state diffusion between the N-doped carbon phase and bulk Ni metal can be utilized to synthesize hierarchical, self-supported, and atomistic catalyst. Strikingly, this hierarchical catalyst is programmable and scalable to meet the industrial demand and can be directly used as a binder-free electrode toward the CO2 electroreduction, delivering a state-of-the-art current density of 48.66 mA cm(-2) at -1.0 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE) and high faradic efficiency of 97% to CO. The selectivity can be retained over 90% in a wide range of working potential of -0.7 to -1.2 V versus RHE. This solid-state diffusion strategy presents great potential to produce hierarchical and atomistic catalysts at industrial levels.

The feasibility of the CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) hinges on the development of catalysts that feature high activity, selectivity, and stability. As a new research frontier, single-atom catalysts (SACs) have shown immense potential in the field of CO2 reduction by virtue of their unique geometric/electronic structures, and have also provided new opportunities for atomic-level understanding of structure–function relationships. Therefore, this review aims to outline recent advances of SACs for CO2RR. We start by introducing the current research status and general synthesis strategies of SACs, and then shift our focus to analyzing the various regulation strategies and deciphering the structure–function relationships of SACs in the CO2RR. Finally, we propose future directions and opportunities for CO2RR-oriented SACs, while also highlighting potential challenges that may be encountered along the way.
