Abstract:Optical measurements sensitive to different types of symmetry breaking have been widely used to probe spontaneously symmetry broken states in quantum materials. In particular, measurements of polar Kerr rotation have emerged as a key experimental technique to identify the time-reversal symmetry breaking, meanwhile the polarization dependence in the Kerr rotation can be used to probe lattice rotation symmetry. Here, we present static and time-resolved Kerr rotation measurement on the newly discovered Kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. We observe the striking large optical Kerr effect with unexpected polarization dependence in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. Below charge density wave transition temperature ($T_{CDW}$), the Kerr rotation promptly emerges and increases close to about 1 mrad. The rotation angle shows two-fold rotation symmetry in \emph{ab} plane. With femtosecond laser pulse pumping, the Kerr rotation angle can be easily suppressed and recovers in several picoseconds accompanied with coherent oscillations. Significantly, the oscillations in the Kerr signal also experience a 180 degree periodic change. Our investigation provides convincing evidence for the simultaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and formation of two-fold rotation symmetry in CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ just below $T_{CDW}$.

Abstract:Fermi-surface fluctuations and lattice instabilities in the two-dimensional metallic kagome superconductor CsV_{3}Sb_{5} are elucidated via polarization-resolved Raman spectroscopy. The presence of a weak electronic continuum in high-quality samples marks the crossover into the charge-density-wave (CDW) ordered phase, while impurity-rich samples promote strong defect-induced electronic scattering processes that affect the coherence of the CDW phase. CDW-induced phonon anomalies appear below T_{CDW}, with emergent C2 symmetry for one of the CDW amplitude modes, alluding to nematicity. In conjunction with symmetry-breaking lattice distortions, a kinklike hardening of the A_{1g} phonon energy at T_{CDW} signifies a concerted interplay of electronic correlations and electron-phonon coupling in the exotic CDW order.

Abstract:Kagome metals AV3Sb5 (A = K, Cs, Rb) provide a rich platform for intertwined orders, where evidence for time-reversal symmetry breaking, likely due to the long-sought loop currents, has emerged in STM and muon spin relaxation experiments. An isotropic component in the spontaneous optical rotation has also been reported, and it was interpreted as the magneto-optic Kerr effect arising from time-reversal symmetry breaking. Intriguingly, the observed rotations differ by five orders of magnitude between different wavelengths and samples, suggesting more intricate physics. Here we report optical rotation and polar Kerr measurements in CsV3Sb5 crystals at the same wavelength. We observe large isotropic components of 1 milliradian in the optical rotation that do not respond to applied magnetic fields but flip sign between samples, while the spontaneous Kerr signal is less than 20 nanoradian. Our results prove unambiguously that the reported isotropic rotation is not related to time-reversal symmetry breaking but instead indicates a new intertwined order that onsets at the same temperature.

Abstract:The kagome materials AV_{3}Sb_{5} (A=K, Rb, Cs) host an intriguing interplay between unconventional superconductivity and charge-density waves. Here, we investigate CsV_{3}Sb_{5} by combining high-resolution thermal-expansion, heat-capacity, and electrical resistance under strain measurements. We directly unveil that the superconducting and charge-ordered states strongly compete, and that this competition is dramatically influenced by tuning the crystallographic c axis. In addition, we report the absence of additional bulk phase transitions within the charge-ordered state, notably associated with rotational symmetry breaking within the kagome planes. This suggests that any breaking of the C_{6} invariance occurs via different stacking of C_{6}-symmetric kagome patterns. Finally, we find that the charge-density-wave phase exhibits an enhanced A_{1g}-symmetric elastoresistance coefficient, whose large increase at low temperature is driven by electronic degrees of freedom.

Abstract:Recently discovered kagome metals A V 3 Sb 5 ( A = K, Rb, and Cs) provide an ideal platform to study the correlation among nontrivial band topology, unconventional charge density wave (CDW), and superconductivity. The evolution of electronic structures associated with the change of lattice modulations is crucial for understanding of the CDW mechanism, with the combination of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements and density functional theory calculations, we investigate how band dispersions change with the increase of lattice distortions. In particular, we focus on the electronic states around <?CDATA $\bar{M}$?> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <mml:mover accent="true"> <mml:mi>M</mml:mi> <mml:mo stretchy="false">¯</mml:mo> </mml:mover> </mml:math> point, where the van Hove singularities are expected to play crucial roles in the CDW transition. Previous ARPES studies reported a spectral weight splitting of the van Hove singularity around <?CDATA $\bar{M}$?> <mml:math xmlns:mml="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" overflow="scroll"> <mml:mover accent="true"> <mml:mi>M</mml:mi> <mml:mo stretchy="false">¯</mml:mo> </mml:mover> </mml:math> point, which is associated with the 3D lattice modulations. Our studies reveal that this “splitting” can be connected to the two van Hove singularities at k z = 0 and k z = π / c in the normal states. When the electronic system enters into the CDW state, both van Hove singularities move down. Such novel properties are important for understanding of the CDW transition.

Abstract:We report the observation of twofold rotation symmetry in charge-density wave (CDW) state in the newly discovered kagome superconductor CsV3Sb5. Just below its CDW transition temperature (TCDW), the polarization rotation of the reflected laser beam promptly emerges and increases close to about 1 mrad, and the rotation angle shows twofold rotation symmetry. This observation is very different from many other experimental methods in which nematicity or C2 rotation symmetry appears at low temperatures far below TCDW. There are two components included, where the d-wave-like component originates from electronic nematic order and constant term points to the possible existence of time-reversal-symmetry breaking (TRSB), respectively. With femtosecond laser pulse pumping, the likely TRSB and nematicity can be easily suppressed, and the latter is further modulated by coherent phonon. Our investigation provides clear optical evidence for the formation of nematic order with twofold rotation symmetry and possible existence of TRSB just below TCDW and, moreover, reveals the controlling method with femtosecond laser and coherent phonon.

Abstract:The structure of charge density wave states in AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) kagome superconductors remains elusive, with three possible $2a\times2a\times2c$ candidates: tri-hexagonal, star-of-David, and their mixture. In this study, we conducted a systematic first-principles investigation of the nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra for the $2a\times2a\times2c$ CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ structures. By comparing our simulations with experimental data, we have concluded that the NQR spectrum indicates the tri-hexagonal structure as the proper structure for CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ after its charge density wave phase transition. The NMR calculation results obtained from the tri-hexagonal structure are also consistent with the experimental data.

Abstract:Recently, a family of nonmagnetic kagome metals AV(3)Sb(5) (A=K, Rb, and Cs) has attracted significant attention for realizing the intertwining of quantum order and nontrivial topology. However, these compounds have been identified to host complex band structures. Therefore, it is desirable to design and synthesize novel kagome materials with a simple band topology and good transport properties. In this study, using first-principles calculations, we present the electronic properties and the intrinsic spin Hall effect of V6Sb4, the latest experimentally synthesized vanadium-based compounds that form a kagome bilayer. In the absence of spin-orbital coupling (SOC), this compound is a Dirac nodal line semimetal with symmetry-protected nodal rings near the Fermi level. Within the SOC, the spin-rotation symmetry breaks the gaps of the nodal rings with a small band gap. Furthermore, based on the Wannier tight-binding approach and the Kubo formula, we reveal a large spin Hall effect in V6Sb4, which intrinsically originates from the spin Berry curvature. Our work further expands nonmagnetic kagome compounds for applications in spintronics accompanied by exotic quantum order.

Abstract:Kagomesuperconductors AV(3)Sb(5) (A = K, Rb,Cs) provide a fertile playground for studying intriguing phenomena,including nontrivial band topology, superconductivity, giant anomalousHall effect, and charge density wave (CDW). Recently, a C (2) symmetric nematic phase prior to the superconductingstate in AV(3)Sb(5) drew enormous attention dueto its potential inheritance of the symmetry of the unusual superconductivity.However, direct evidence of the rotation symmetry breaking of theelectronic structure in the CDW state from the reciprocal space isstill rare, and the underlying mechanism remains ambiguous. The observationshows unconventional unidirectionality, indicative of rotation symmetrybreaking from six-fold to two-fold. The interlayer coupling betweenadjacent planes with pi-phase offset in the 2 x 2 x2 CDW phase leads to the preferred two-fold symmetric electronic structure.These rarely observed unidirectional back-folded bands in KV3Sb5 may provide important insights into its peculiar chargeorder and superconductivity.

Abstract:Recently, kagome lattice metal AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (A = K, Rb, Cs) family has received wide attention due to its presence of superconductivity, charge density wave (CDW) and peculiar properties from topological nontrivial electronic structure. With time-resolved pump-probe spectroscopy, we show that the excited quasiparticle relaxation dynamics can be explained by formation of energy gap below the phase transition being similar to a usual second-order CDW condensate, by contrast, the structure change is predominantly first order phase transition. Furthermore, no CDW amplitude mode is identified in the ordered phase. The results suggest that the CDW order is very different from the traditional CDW condensate. We also find that weak pump pulse can non-thermally melt the CDW order and drive the sample into its high temperature phase, revealing the fact that the difference in lattice potential between those phases is small.

Abstract:Recently discovered superconductors AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs)1,2 provide a fresh opportunity to study correlation-driven electronic phenomena on a kagome lattice. The observation of an unusual charge density wave (CDW) in the normal state of all the members of the AV3Sb5 family2–10 has prompted a large effort to identify any ‘hidden’ broken symmetries associated with it. We use spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunnelling microscopy to reveal pronounced intensity anisotropy between the different directions of hexagonal CDW in KV3Sb5. In particular, we find that one of the CDW directions is distinctly different compared with the other two. This observation points to an intrinsic rotation-symmetry-broken electronic ground state where the symmetry is reduced from sixfold to twofold. Furthermore, in contrast to previous reports3, we find that the CDW phase is insensitive to the magnetic-field direction, regardless of the presence or absence of atomic defects. Our experiments, combined with earlier observations of stripe charge ordering in CsV3Sb5, establish correlation-driven rotation symmetry breaking as a unifying feature of AV3Sb5 kagome superconductors.

Abstract:Using x-ray photoelectron diffraction (XPD) and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we study photoemission intensity changes related to changes in the geometric and electronic structure in the kagome metal CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ upon transition to an unconventional charge density wave (CDW) state. The XPD patterns reveal the presence of a chiral atomic structure in the CDW phase. Furthermore, using circularly polarized x-rays, we have found a pronounced non-trivial circular dichroism in the angular distribution of the valence band photoemission in the CDW phase, indicating a chirality of the electronic structure. This observation is consistent with the proposed orbital loop current order. In view of a negligible spontaneous Kerr signal in recent magneto-optical studies, the results suggest an antiferromagnetic coupling of the orbital magnetic moments along the $c$-axis. While the inherent structural chirality may also induce circular dichroism, the observed asymmetry values seem to be too large in the case of the weak structural distortions caused by the CDW.

Abstract:The kagome lattice provides a fascinating playground to study geometrical frustration, topology and strong correlations. The newly-discovered kagome metals AV$_3$Sb$_5$ (where A can refer to K, Rb, or Cs) exhibit phenomena including topological band structure, symmetry-breaking charge-density waves and superconductivity. Nevertheless, the nature of the symmetry breaking in the charge-density wave phase is not yet clear, despite the fact that it is crucial in order to understand whether the superconductivity is unconventional. In this work, we perform scanning birefringence microscopy on all three members of this family and find that six-fold rotation symmetry is broken at the onset of the charge-density wave transition in all these compounds. We show that the three nematic domains are oriented at 120$^\circ$ to each other and propose that staggered charge-density wave orders with a relative $\pi$ phase shift between layers is a possibility that can explain these observations. We also perform magneto-optical Kerr effect and circular dichroism measurements. The onset of both signals is at the transition temperature, indicating broken time-reversal symmetry and the existence of the long-sought loop currents in that phase.

Abstract:Abstract In transition metal compounds, due to the interplay of charge, spin, lattice and orbital degrees of freedom, many intertwined orders exist with close energies. One of the commonly observed states is the so-called nematic electron state, which breaks the in-plane rotational symmetry. This nematic state appears in cuprates, iron-based superconductor, etc. Nematicity may coexist, affect, cooperate or compete with other orders. Here we show the anisotropic in-plane electronic state and superconductivity in a recently discovered kagome metal CsV 3 Sb 5 by measuring c -axis resistivity with the in-plane rotation of magnetic field. We observe a twofold symmetry of superconductivity in the superconducting state and a unique in-plane nematic electronic state in normal state when rotating the in-plane magnetic field. Interestingly these two orders are orthogonal to each other in terms of the field direction of the minimum resistivity. Our results shed new light in understanding non-trivial physical properties of CsV 3 Sb 5 .

Abstract:Transition metal compounds with kagome structure have been found to exhibit a variety of exotic structural, electronic, and magnetic orders. These orders are competing with energies very close to each other, resulting in complex phase transitions. Some of the phases are easily observable, such as the charge density wave (CDW) and the superconducting phase, while others are more challenging to identify and characterize. Here we present magneto-transport evidence of a new phase below similar to 35 K in the kagome topological metal CsV3Sb5 (CVS) thin flakes between the CDW and the superconducting transition temperatures. This phase is characterized by six-fold rotational symmetry in the in-plane magnetoresistance (MR) and is connected to the orbital current order in CVS. Furthermore, the phase is characterized by a large in-plane negative magnetoresistance, which suggests the existence of a three-dimensional, magnetic field-tunable orbital current ordered phase. Our results highlight the potential of magneto-transport to reveal the interactions between exotic quantum states of matter and to uncover the symmetry of such hidden phases.
