Abstract:Let $A$ be the ring of integers of global field $K$. Let $G \subseteq GL_2(A)$ be a finite group. Let $G$ act linearly on $R = A[X,Y]$ (fixing $A$). Let $R^G$ be the ring of invariants. In the equi-characteristic case we prove $R^G$ is Cohen-Macaulay. In mixed characteristic case we prove that if for all primes $p$ dividing $|G|$ the Sylow $p$-subgroup of $G$ has exponent $p$ then $R^G$ is Cohen-Macaulay. We prove a similar case if for all primes $p$ dividing $|G|$ the prime $p$ is un-ramified in $K$.

Abstract:Let K be an algebraically closed field. For a graded K-Algebra R, we write cmdef R:=dim R -depth R. We show that for each reductive group G (over K) which is not linearly reductive, there exists a faithful G-module V such that cmdef K[\sum_i=1^k V]^G >= k-2 for all k. We will give such a V explicitly.

Abstract:Let G be a finite group acting linearly on the polynomial ring with invariant ring R. If the action is small, then a classical result of Auslander gives in dimension two a correspondence between linear representations of G and maximal Cohen-Macaulay R-modules. We establish a correspondence for all linear actions between representations and objects over the invariant ring by looking at quotient module schemes (up to modification) instead of the modules of covariants.

Abstract:Over a field of characteristic 0, every ring of invariants of any finite group is Cohen-Macaulay. This is not true for fields of positive characteristic. We consider permutation representations and their invariant rings over fields $\mathbb{F}_p$ of prime order. We give an efficient algorithm which for any given permutation representation, determines those primes $p$ for which the invariant ring over $\mathbb{F}_p$ is Cohen-Macaulay. Extensions to subgroups of reflection groups other than the symmetric group are indicated.

Abstract:We investigate Cohen-Macaulay representations of quotient singularities $R:=l[[x_1,\cdots,x_d]]^G$ where $l$ is a field and $G$ is a finite group acting on $l[[x_1,\cdots,x_d]]$ as a ring, not necessarily as an $l$-algebra, with $|G|$ not divided by ${\rm char}\, l$. In fact, if we put $k:=l^G$, then we may assume that $G$ is a subgroup of $GL_d(l)\rtimes{\rm Gal}(l/k)$. We show that $R$ has a generator giving an NCCR and therefore when $d=2$, it is of finite Cohen-Macaulay type. Additionally, we completely describe its Auslander-Reiten quiver, which is often non-simply laced, as a quotient of a certain quiver. Moreover, we also prove that two-dimensional rings of finite Cohen-Macaulay type of equicharacteristic zero are precisely quotient singularities of this form, which generalizes Esnault and Auslander's result. Combining these results, we prove that the quivers that may arise as the Auslander-Reiten quiver of a two-dimensional Gorenstein ring of finite Cohen-Macaulay type of equicharacteristic zero are either doubles of extended Dynkin diagrams or ones having loops. To accomplish these, we establish two results which are of independent interest. First, we prove the existence of $(d-1)$-almost split sequences for arbitrary Cohen-Macaulay normal rings having NCCR which are not necessarily isolated singularities. Second, we make it possible to determine simple modules over skew group algebras by relating them to those over certain group algebras.

Abstract:Suppose that G G is a finite, unitary reflection group acting on a complex vector space V V and X X is the fixed point subspace of an element of G G . Define N N to be the setwise stabilizer of X X in G G , Z Z to be the pointwise stabilizer, and C = N / Z C=N/Z . Then restriction defines a homomorphism from the algebra of G G -invariant polynomial functions on V V to the algebra of C C -invariant functions on X X . Extending earlier work by Douglass and Röhrle for Coxeter groups, we characterize when the restriction mapping is surjective for arbitrary unitary reflection groups G G in terms of the exponents of G G and C C and their reflection arrangements. A consequence of our main result is that the variety of G G -orbits in the G G -saturation of X X is smooth if and only if it is normal.

Abstract:Abstract Suppose that W is a finite, unitary, reflection group acting on the complex vector space V and X is a subspace of V . Define N to be the setwise stabilizer of X in W , Z to be the pointwise stabilizer, and C = N / Z . Then restriction defines a homomorphism from the algebra of W -invariant polynomial functions on V to the algebra of C -invariant functions on X . In this note we consider the special case when W is a Coxeter group, V is the complexified reflection representation of W , and X is in the lattice of the arrangement of W , and give a simple, combinatorial characterization of when the restriction mapping is surjective in terms of the exponents of W and C . As an application of our result, in the case when W is the Weyl group of a semisimple, complex Lie algebra, we complete a calculation begun by Richardson in 1987 and obtain a simple combinatorial characterization of regular decomposition classes whose closure is a normal variety.

Abstract:Let G be a real reductive group, and let chi be a character of a reductive subgroup H of G. We construct chi-invariant linear functionals on certain cohomologically induced representations of G, and we show that these linear functionals do not vanish on the bottom layers. Applying this construction, we prove two Archimedean nonvanishing hypotheses which are vital to the arithmetic study of special values of certain L-functions via modular symbols.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a complex classical group, and let $V$ be its defining representation (possibly plus a copy of the dual). A foundational problem in classical invariant theory is to write down generators and relations for the ring of $G$-invariant polynomial functions on the space $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ of degree-$m$ homogeneous polynomial functions on $V$. In this paper, we replace $\mathcal{P}^m(V)$ with the full polynomial algebra $\mathcal{P}(V)$. As a result, the invariant ring is no longer finitely generated. Hence instead of seeking generators, we aim to write down linear bases for bigraded components. Indeed, when $G$ is of sufficiently high rank, we realize these bases as sets of graphs with prescribed number of vertices and edges. When the rank of $G$ is small, there arise complicated linear dependencies among the graphs, but we remedy this setback via representation theory: in particular, we determine the dimension of an arbitrary component in terms of branching multiplicities from the general linear group to the symmetric group. We thereby obtain an expression for the bigraded Hilbert series of the ring of invariants on $\mathcal{P}(V)$. We conclude with examples using our graphical notation, several of which recover classical results.

Abstract:Let $V$ be a finite rank vector space over a perfect field of characteristic $p>0$, and let $G$ be a finite subgroup of $\operatorname{GL}(V)$. If $V$ is a permutation representation of $G$, or more generally a monomial representation, we prove that the ring of invariants $(\operatorname{Sym}V)^G$ has finite Frobenius representation type. We also construct an example with $V$ a finite rank vector space over the algebraic closure of the function field ${\mathbb{F}_3}(t)$, and $G$ an elementary abelian subgroup of $\operatorname{GL}(V)$, such that the invariant ring $(\operatorname{Sym}V)^G$ does not have finite Frobenius representation type.

Abstract:Let V be a complex vector space with basis {x_1,x_2,...,x_n} and G be a finite subgroup of GL(V). The tensor algebra T(V) over the complex is isomorphic to the polynomials in the non-commutative variables x_1, x_2,..., x_n with complex coefficients. We want to give a combinatorial interpretation for the decomposition of T(V) into simple G-modules. In particular, we want to study the graded space of invariants in T(V) with respect to the action of G. We give a general method for decomposing the space T(V) into simple modules in terms of words in a Cayley graph of the group G. To apply the method to a particular group, we require a homomorphism from a subalgebra of the group algebra into the character algebra. In the case of G as the symmetric group, we give an example of this homomorphism from the descent algebra. When G is the dihedral group, we have a realization of the character algebra as a subalgebra of the group algebra. In those two cases, we have an interpretation for the graded dimensions of the invariant space in term of those words.

On polynomial invariant rings in modular invariant theory

Abstract:Let $\Bbbk$ be a field of characteristic $p>0$, $V$ a finite-dimensional $\Bbbk$-vector-space, and $G$ a finite $p$-group acting $\Bbbk$-linearly on $V$. Let $S = \Sym V^*$. We show that $S^G$ is a polynomial ring if and only if the dimension of its singular locus is less than $\rank_\Bbbk V^G$. Confirming a conjecture of Shank-Wehlau-Broer, we show that if $S^G$ is a direct summand of $S$, then $S^G$ is a polynomial ring, in the following cases: \begin{enumerate} \item $\Bbbk = \bbF_p$ and $\rank_\Bbbk V^G = 4$; or \item $|G| = p^3$. \end{enumerate} In order to prove the above result, we also show that if $\rank_\Bbbk V^G \geq \rank_\Bbbk V - 2$, then the Hilbert ideal $\hilbertIdeal_{G,S}$ is a complete intersection.

Invariants and semi-invariants in the cohomology of the complement of a reflection arrangement

Abstract:Suppose V is a finite dimensional, complex vector space, A is a finite set of codimension one subspaces of V, and G is a finite subgroup of the general linear group GL(V) that permutes the hyperplanes in A. In this paper we study invariants and semi-invariants in the graded QG-module H^*(M(A)), where M(A) denotes the complement in V of the hyperplanes in A and H^*( . ) denotes rational singular cohomology, in the case when A is a reflection arrangement and the pair (A,G) arises from a reflection coset. Our main result is the construction of an explicit, natural (from the point of view of Coxeter groups) basis of the space of invariants, H^*(M(A))^G. In addition to leading to a proof of the description of the space of invariants conjectured by Felder and Veselov for Coxeter groups that does not rely on computer calculations, this construction provides an extension of this description of the space of invariants to arbitrary finite, complex reflection groups. The main result also leads to simplifications of some cohomology computations of Lehrer, Callegaro-Marin, and Marin.

Abstract:This paper presents algebraic methods for the study of polynomial relative invariants, when the group G formed by the symmetries and relative symmetries is a compact Lie group. We deal with the case when the subgroup H of symmetries is normal in G with index m, m greater or equal to 2. For this, we develop the invariant theory of compact Lie groups acting on complex vector spaces. This is the starting point for the study of relative invariants and the computation of their generators. We first obtain the space of the invariants under the subgroup $H$ of $\Gamma$ as a direct sum of $m$ submodules over the ring of invariants under the whole group. Then, based on this decomposition, we construct a Hilbert basis of the ring of G-invariants from a Hilbert basis of the ring of H-invariants. In both results the knowledge of the relative Reynolds operators defined on H-invariants is shown to be an essential tool to obtain the invariants under the whole group. The theory is illustrated with some examples.

Abstract:We describe the ring of invariants for the finite orthogonal group of plus type in odd characteristic acting on its defining representation. We also describe the invariants of its Sylow subgroup in the defining characteristic. In both cases we construct minimal algebra generating sets and describe the relations among the generators. Both rings of invariants are shown to be Complete Intersections and thus are Cohen-Macaulay. We expect the techniques we use will generalise to give a systematic computation for rings of invariants for all of the finite classical groups.

Abstract:We consider the 2-generated free metabelian associative and Lie algebras over the complex field and the invariants of the dihedral groups of finite order acting on these algebras. In the associative case we find a finite set of generators of the algebra of invariants. In the Lie case, when the algebra of invariants is not finitely generated, we give a minimal system of generators of the invariants in the commutator ideal as a module of the algebra of the invariants in the polynomial algebra in two variables. In both associative and Lie cases we compute the Hilbert series of the algebras of invariants.

Abstract:We extend the notion of the $J$-invariant to arbitrary semisimple linear algebraic groups and provide complete decompositions for the normed Chow motives of all generically quasi-split twisted flag varieties. Abstract:Let $K$ be a field, $\Gamma $ a finite group of field automorphisms of $K$, $F$ the $\Gamma $-fixed field in $K$ and $G\leq $GL$_v(K)$ a finite matrix group. Then the action of $\Gamma $ defines a grading on the symmetric algebra of the $F$-space $K^v$ which we use to introduce the notion of homogeneous $\Gamma $-conjugate invariants of $G$. We apply this new grading in invariant theory to broaden the connection between codes and invariant theory by introducing $\Gamma $-conjugate complete weight enumerators of codes. The main result of this paper applies the theory from Nebe, Rains, Sloane to show that under certain extra conditions these new weight enumerators generate the ring of $\Gamma $-conjugate invariants of the associated Clifford-Weil groups. As an immediate consequence we obtain a result by Bannai etal that the complex conjugate weight enumerators generate the ring of complex conjugate invariants of the complex Clifford group. Also the Schur-Weyl duality conjectured and partly shown by Gross etal can be derived from our main result.
