Sustainable Cities and Society
Abstract:Machine learning has been a powerful tool to establish models for timely prediction of PM2.5 concentration, which supports the policy makers to take control actions and facilitates sustainable development of cities by protection on human health. Information of adjacent sites can be a good indicator to represent the regional pattern of PM2.5 pollution, however it has not been widely investigated in most existing prediction models. In this study, a novel hybrid prediction model on PM2.5 concentration taking advantage of appropriate adjacent site observations was proposed. This hybrid model combined long short-term memory neural network (LSTM) and a specific convolutional neural network (CNN) with 1 * 1 kernel size to address the traditional challenge of time-series data and discrete data. The experimental results showed that the novel hybrid model presented the highest prediction accuracy and the lowest error (R-2=0.92-0.94, RMSE=8.54-8.93 mu g/m(3), MAE=5.76-6.5 mu g/m(3)) compared with single models (R-2 =0.81-0.92, RMSE=9.01-13.24 mu g/m(3), MAE=6.79-9.34 mu g/m(3)). The hybrid model is also compared with other similar studies, and it demonstrates a significantly enhanced ability to capture the peak values of PM2.5 concentration by information from appropriate adjacent sites.
