Abstract:The structural evolution and electronic properties of VnC2(-/0) and VnC4(-/0) (n = 1-6) clusters were investigated using photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. The adiabatic and vertical detachment energies of VnC2(-) and VnC4(-) (n = 1-6) clusters were obtained from their photoelectron spectra. The most stable structures were identified by comparing the results of our calculations with the experimental data. We found that the carbon atoms of VnC2(-/0) and VnC4(-/0) (n = 1-6) clusters were separated gradually with increasing number of vanadium atoms. For VnC2(-/0) (n = 3-6) and VnC4(-/0) (n = 4-6) clusters, the carbon atoms are separated by the vanadium atoms. The geometry of V4C4 is a cubic structure and the geometries of V5C4 and V6C4 are formed by one and two vanadium atoms capping the cubic V4C4 structure, respectively.
Electronic and Structural Evolution and Chemical Bonding in Ditungsten Oxide Clusters: W2on- and W2on (N=1-6)

Abstract:We report a systematic and comprehensive investigation of the electronic structures and chemical bonding in a series of ditungsten oxide clusters, W2On- and W2On (n = 1-6), using anion photoelectron spectroscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Well-resolved photoelectron spectra were obtained at several photon energies (2.331, 3.496, 4.661, 6.424, and 7.866 eV), and W 5d-based spectral features were clearly observed and distinguished from O 2p-based features. More complicated spectral features were observed for the oxygen-deficient clusters because of the W 5d electrons. With increasing oxygen content in W2On-, the photoelectron spectra were observed to shift gradually to higher binding energies, accompanied by a decreasing number of W 5d-derived features. A behavior of sequential oxidation as a result of charge transfers from W to O was clearly observed. A large energy gap (2.8 eV) was observed in the spectrum of W2O6-, indicating the high electronic stability of the stoichiometric W2O6 molecule. Extensive DFT calculations were carried out to search for the most stable structures of both the anion and neutral clusters. Time-dependent DFT method was used to compute the vertical detachment energies and compare to the experimental data. Molecular orbitals were used to analyze the chemical bonding in the ditungsten oxide clusters and to elucidate their electronic and structural evolution.

Abstract:We have optimized the geometrical structures of the vanadium clusters V-n and discussed their evolution with cluster sizes in the average nearest-neighbor distances, coordination numbers, binding energies, ionization potential, electron affinities, density of states, valence band width, and magnetic moments using the density functional theory. We found that the clusters from V-2 to V-9 have distinctly molecular behaviour with dramatic size variations; V-13, V-15, and V-19 are the transition regions from the molecular features to the bulk structures, and V-27 and V-51 possess almost the bulk properties.

Abstract:The structural and magnetic properties of small vanadium clusters are studied in the framework of tight-binding theory. According to parameters of the cluster dimer and bulk solid, we developed a tight-binding interatomic potential and calculated the bonding energies for the different possible structures to determine the ground state atomic configurations of the small vanadium clusters. The theoretical bonding energies for the vanadium clusters agree with the experiment much better than the simple droplet model. However, the calculated values for the clusters of odd atomic number are somewhat higher than the measured ones, corresponding to the pair occupation of delocalized 4s(1) electrons. Based on the optimized geometries, we study the magnetic properties of these clusters through a parametrized Hubbard Hamiltonian. We find the small V clusters of ground-state structures exhibit antiferromagnetic behavior while the alignment of local moments in the clusters with the unoptimized structures may show either ferromagnetic or antiferromagnetic characteristics. The average magnetic moments of the clusters decrease nonmonotonically as cluster size increases and the theoretical results are consistent with the upper limits obtained from a recent experiment.

Abstract:Using an empirical many-body potential and a genetic algorithm, the geometries of small V-3 to V-19 clusters have been optimized. We find that the clusters do not mimic the bulk structure and undergo significant geometrical changes with size. Based on the optimization geometries, the d electronic structure and magnetic properties of V clusters are studied, by using a Hubbard tight-binding model Hamiltonian in the unrestricted Hartree-Fock approximation. The calculated average magnetic moments for these clusters are consistent with the upper limits obtained from experiments. The total density of states (TDOS) and the local density of states (LDOS) of d electrons shed light on the evolution of the electronic properties.

Abstract:The geometrical and electronic properties of the anionic and neutral V2O6 clusters were studied with the spin unrestricted hybrid density functional B3LYP method. The calculated ground states of both clusters are different from the previous theoretical results. The ground state of V2O6- is found to be a doublet with C2v symmetry, while a doublet with D2h symmetry was previously obtained by Vyboishchikov and Sauer. For neutral V2O6, the ground state is an open-shell singlet with D2h symmetry whose energy is very close to that of the triplet state. In contrast, a closed-shell singlet with D2h symmetry was obtained by Vyboishchikov and Sauer, and Calatayud et al. found a triplet ground state with Cs symmetry. Moreover,the calculated adiabatic and vertical detachment energies of the anion cluster are in much better agreement with the experimental results of photoelectron spectroscopy than previous theoretical values.

Abstract:The reaction Of V2O5 with H(2)C(2)O(4)(.)2H(2)O in the presence of H3BO3 under hydrothermal conditions has afforded V2O2(OH)(2)(C2O4)(H2O)(2) (1), which crystallizes in the triclinic system, space group P (1) over bar with a = 5.2405(10) angstrom, b = 5.7340(11) angstrom, c = 7.1778(14) angstrom, a = 76.44(3)degrees, beta= 69.37(3)degrees, gamma = 75.37 (3)degrees. The vanadium atoms in I form dimers by sharing edges consisting of p-OH groups, and these dimers are connected further by oxalate ligands to form chains. The magnetic susceptibility data of I fit excellently with the Heisenberg dimer model in the temperature interval 2-300 K. Compound 1 is antiferromagnetic with a J value of -29.6 cm(-1). Abstract:Polyoxovanadates (III) are important class of polyoxometalates in molecular magnetism field, and particularly the systems which contain vanadium(III) centers. To date, only very few highly reduced vanadium polynuclear complexes were reported, which remains a significant challenge to synthesize novel polyoxovanadates, owing to the characteristics of easily oxidized vanadium(III). Herein, two unprecedented petaloid chiral octanuclear polyoxovanadates, l- and d-[H2N(CH3)2]12.5(H3N(CH2)2NH3)(H3O)1.5(VIIIμ2-OH)8(SO4)16·2H2O (L-, D-V8), have been successfully obtained by solvothermal method without any chiral auxiliary. Both L- and D-V8 compounds contain the motif eight-membered ring (Vμ2-O)8(SO4)16 constituted of three different chiral entangled loops with the V atoms as nodes. Bond valence calculation (BVC) analysis indicates that all the V ions existed in L, D-V8 are +3 value. The magnetic behavior of compounds indicated ferromagnetic coupling between vanadium(III) ions. To our knowledge, it is the first chiral highly reduced polyoxovanadates that exhibit excellent ferromagnetism.

Abstract:We here report a systematic theoretical study on geometries, electronic structures, and energetic stabilities of six hexanuclear polyoxometalates [M6O19](2-) of the six-valence-electron metals including the d-elements M = Cr, Mo, W, Sg from group 6 and the f-elements M = Nd, U. Scalar relativistic density functional theory was applied to these clusters in vacuum and in solution. It is shown that the Oh Lindqvist structure of the isolated [M6O19](2-) units with hexavalent M elements (M(+6)) is only stable for the three heavy transition metals M = Mo, W, and Sg. The rare Th symmetry is predicted for M = U both in vacuum and in solution, owing to pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortion of these closed-shell systems. The Oh and Th structures correspond to cyclic "aromatic" U-̇O-̇U and alternating U=O-U bonding of cross-linked U4O4 rings, respectively. The reduced [U6O19](8-) cluster with pentavalent U(+5) also shows Th symmetry in vacuum, but Oh symmetry in a dielectric environment. The occurrence of different structures for varying fractional oxidation states in different environments is rationalized. Theoretical investigation of the recently synthesized U(+5) complex [U6O13L6](0) (L6 = tetracyclopentadienyl dibipyridine) shows a distorted Th-type symmetry, too. The stabilities of these complexes of different metal oxidation states are consistent with the general periodic trends of oxidation states.

Abstract:A new polyoxovanadoborate cluster (H2NCH2CH2NH3)(3) {(VO)(6)[B10O16(OH)(6)](2)} center dot 11H(2)O was prepared by hydrothermal technique and characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis, IR and TGA. Abstract:The electronic structural, magnetic and optical properties of pure and V-doped ZnO are investigated by first-principles calculations based on the density functional theory. With the introduction of V atoms, the spin-splitting near the Fermi level leads to a net magnetic moment of the system. A significant possibility of room temperature ferromagnetism (RTFM) originated from the Ruderman–Kittel–Kassuya–Yosida (RKKY) exchange is predicted. Oxygen vacancy is positive to enhance the ferromagnetism while zinc vacancy is negative. With respect to the optical properties, the presence of V atoms was found to have an obvious influence on the transmittivity, especially in the low energy region. A slight V-doping can keep a high optical transmission and smoothly modulate the optical bandgap.

Abstract:The existence of a novel octahedral UO6 complex had been suggested by Pyykko et al [Pyykko, P.; Runeberg, N., Straka, M; Dyall, K. G Chem. Phys Lett 2000, 328, 415]. We have now investigated the stability, the geometric and electronic structures, and the vibrations of various UO6 molecules, using spin-orbit density functional and scalar-relativistic coupled-cluster approaches We find four different (meta-)stable species, namely D-3(2h)-UO2(eta(2)-O-2(center dot))(2) at lowest energy, C-3(2 nu)-UO4 center dot(eta(2)-O-2(center dot)) and D-1(3)-U(eta(2)-O-2)(3) at medium energies, and O-1(h)-UO6 at highest energy The decay of O-h-UO6 occurs via an activated spin-flip mechanism. The UO6 species correspond to local minima on singlet and triplet energy surfaces and might be trapped in noble gas matrices Experimentally, the four species might be identified through their vibrational spectra Uranium is best described as coordinated by oxygen atoms in various oxidation states as oxo O2-, oxido(I) O center dot-, peroxido O-2(2-), and superoxido O-2(center dot-) ligands. The occurrence of monovalent oxygen is remarkable The resulting characterization of the central ion as U-VI in all four cases does not fully reflect the electronic differences, nor the "valence-activity" of the U-6p(6) semicore shell

Abstract:Structures, stabilities and electronic properties of mixed silicon/vanadium clusters (V 2 Si n ; n = 1–10) have been investigated systematically using the CALYPSO structural searching approach and density functional theory calculations. Results indicate two vanadium atoms tend to form V 2 bond encapsulated gradually into silicon cages with the increasing number of silicon atoms. Analyses of stabilities reveal that V 2 Si 6 has the highest stability and the doping of two vanadium atoms makes the stabilities of silicon clusters decrease. At last, charge transfer, Mayer bond order, electron localization function, IR and Raman spectrum are operative for characterizing and rationalizing the electronic properties of doped clusters. Abstract:Using photoelectron spectroscopy and first principles molecular orbital calculations, we report the first observation of an abrupt change in the electronic structure of W4Om− (m⩽6) clusters at m=5 which is well below the bulk stoichiometric composition of tungsten oxide (WO3). The signature of this onset is established from an anomalous increase in the vertical detachment energies (VDE), adiabatic electron affinities (AEA), and the energy gaps between highest occupied (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbitals (LUMO). These changes are also accompanied by the cleavage of 50% of the W–W bonds and localization of electron charge density in W4O5 cluster.

Abstract:The ionic hexanuclear cluster aggregate [FeII6(mu3-OH)6]6+ has been synthesised using hydrothermal conditions starting from ferrous oxalate in the presence of barium and bromide or iodide ions. A single crystal X-ray structure on the compound Ba4[FeII6(mu3-OH)6(C2O4)6]Br2.6H2O shows that the [FeII6(mu3-OH)6]6+ units are held together by bridging oxalates in a pseudo-cubic close-packed array. The barium ions in conjunction with oxalate groups provide a barrel-shaped cage between the FeII6 aggregates containing the bromide counterions and lattice waters and corresponding to an 'octahedral hole' in the pseudo-cubic close-packed structure. A magnetic susceptibility study shows that the FeII centres are antiferromagnetically coupled. Below 10 K the system displays a long range antiferromagnetic ordering mediated by the oxalate bridges and a molecular-based description of the magnetism is no longer valid.
