Abstract:In recent years, research on the use of plasma in biomedicine has made great progress, with cold atmospheric plasma showing good potential for cancer treatment. DC-powered plasma generation systems are an alternative to AC-powered ones. During the discharge process, the charge from a DC power supply flows in one direction and the waveform direction is the same whereas that from an AC power supply oscillates and causes a reverse current peak. It is believed that the anti-cancer effect of active particles generated in the liquid phase by plasma is significant, and so we explored the ones most relevant to the LP-1 myeloma cell inactivation efficiency by treatment with a DC-powered plasma jet. After comparing the cell inactivation efficiency of various active particles in the liquid phase under different experimental conditions, we determined that peroxynitrite ions (ONOO^-) had the strongest correlation with cell inactivation efficiency. Besides, electrolysis and helium gas flow during DC-powered plasma jet treatment did not significantly inactivate LP-1 cells. Therefore, LP-1 cell inactivation by applying a DC-powered plasma jet is achieved by generating liquid-phase active particles instead of electrolysis and helium gas flow.
