Abstract:Due to the energy conservation law, traditional active noise control system cannot realize the suppression of omnidirectional sound field and will bring fluctuation effect in the far field. This paper presents a method of sound field control using beam deflection to overcome the shortcomings of traditional active noise control system. The principle of beam deflection is firstly derived based on the principle of beam forming. Two methods including conventional beam deflection and optimal beam deflection are proposed. Then technical route of the sound field control using beam deflection is given. Finally, simulations are performed and the results show that proposed method can effectively suppress the energy of a controlled sound source in the predetermined direction.
Simulation and Experimental Demonstration of Sound Field Control Using Beam Deflection

Abstract:The acoustic absorption materials are mostly used for underwater stealth. However, the effect of such materials decreases in low-frequency band. Therefore, a method of sound field control using beam deflection was proposed, which is a kind of active noise control technology. The principle of the algorithm is firstly used in underwater stealth. This paper focused on the simulation based on the finite-element method and an experiment to verify the conventional beam deflection algorithm. The simulation based on the finite-element method are performed and the results show that the conventional beam deflection can effectively realize sound field directional weakening. Finally, an experiment is carried out in a muffler pool. The experiment data show that the energy at the predetermined control direction is reduced by more than 14dB. The experiment data of different frequencies, different distances and different control angles verified that the conventional beam deflection achieved stable sound field directional weakening effect.
An experimental study on the active noise control using a parametric array loudspeaker

Abstract:An active noise control (ANC) system using a parametric array loudspeaker (PAL) was designed to cancel broadband noise at a person’s ear, where a custom-made low-mass membrane pick-up from a retroreflective film and a laser Doppler vibrometer was used to form a remote sensing apparatus to determine the acoustic information with minimum obstructions to the person. The experiment results show that such an ANC system can achieve similar overall noise reductions from 1 kHz to 6 kHz at the ear as a similar one albeit using a traditional omnidirectional loudspeaker. The noise reductions at nine points around the person were used to evaluate the effects of the ANC system in the other areas, and the results show the side effect of the ANC system with the PAL is much smaller than that with the traditional loudspeaker due to the sharp radiation directivity of the PAL. It is also shown that when the PAL was placed away from the person, the ANC performance and the side effect to the other areas remained similar due to its low geometrical spreading attenuation, but the side effect caused by a traditional loudspeaker to the other areas increased with its distance to the person.

Abstract:This paper investigates the feasibility of remotely generating a quiet zone in an acoustic free field using multiple parametric array loudspeakers (PALs). A primary sound field is simulated using point monopoles located randomly in a two-dimensional plane, or three-dimensional (3D) space, whereas the secondary sound field is generated by multiple PALs uniformly distributed around the circumference of a circle sitting on the same plane as the primary sources, or on the surface of a sphere for 3D space. A quiet zone size is defined as the diameter of the maximal circular zone within which the noise reduction is greater than 10 dB. The size of this quiet zone is found to be proportional to 0.19λN for N secondary sources with a wavelength λ when the primary and secondary sources are in the same plane, whereas it is found to be 0.55λN1/2 for the 3D case. The size of the quiet zones generated by PALs is similar to that observed with traditional omnidirectional loudspeakers; however, the effects of using PALs on the sound field outside the target zone is much smaller due to their sharp radiation directivity and slow decay rate along the propagation distance. Experimental results are also presented to validate these numerical simulations.

Abstract:Parametric array loudspeakers (PALs) are known for producing highly directional audio beams, a feat more challenging to achieve with conventional electro-dynamic loudspeakers (EDLs). Due to their intrinsic physical mechanisms, PALs hold promising potential for spatial audio applications such as virtual reality (VR). However, the feasibility of using an array of PALs for sound zone control (SZC) has remained unexplored, mainly due to the complexity of the nonlinear demodulation process inherent in PALs. Leveraging recent advancements in PAL modeling, this work proposes an optimization algorithm to achieve the acoustic contrast control (ACC) between two target areas using a PAL array. The performance and robustness of the proposed ACC-based SZC using PAL arrays are investigated through simulations, and the results are compared with those obtained using EDL arrays. The results show that the PAL array outperforms the EDL array in SZC performance and robustness at higher frequencies and lower signal-to-noise ratio, while being comparable under other conditions. This work paves the way for high-contrast acoustic control using PAL arrays.

Active control of scattered acoustic radiation: a real-time implementation

Abstract:This paper presents an active noise control experiment designed to validate a real-time control strategy for reduction of the noise scattered from a three-dimensional body. The control algorithm relies on estimating the scattered noise by linear filtering of the total noise measured around the body; suitable filters are identified from off-line measurements. A modified Filtered-Error Least-Mean-Squares algorithm then leads to the adaptive filters which drive the secondary sources. The paper provides the numerical simulations using a Boundary Element Method which helped in designing a feasible experiment in an anechoic chamber with a limited number of control sources. Eventually a real-time pure-tone implementation with 14 ordinary loudspeakers and a large body is shown to yield on average a 10 dB reduction of the scattered noise at the error sensors, which is close to the optimum reduction predicted by the numerical simulations for the sensor arrangement.

Robust Improved Multiband-Structured Subband Adaptive Filter for Active Noise Control with Impulsive Interference

Abstract:The feedforward filtered-x least mean square algorithm is extensively implemented for active control of broadband noise. However, the control performance is substantially deteriorated due to colored noise and the presence of uncorrelated disturbances near the reference and error sensors. To tackle these issues, in this paper, a robust improved multiband-structured subband adaptive filter based on logarithmic and total least squares method is proposed for active control. Unlike the conventional method of total least squares, the proposed algorithm adopts logarithmic and Rayleigh quotient functions. The closed loop implementation of the improved multiband-structured subband adaptive filter is adopted to meet the delayless requirement. The proposed algorithm is well-suited for environments where the reference signal is highly correlated and the residual noise is contaminated by impulsive noise. Furthermore, an affine combination of the proposed algorithm is developed to meet the complementary requirements of faster convergence and improved noise reduction. Eventually, the stability and computational complexity are studied. Simulation results using measured acoustic paths in an anechoic chamber and a normal room illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm for controlling broadband noise with impulsive interference. In addition, the tracking control performance is evaluated in a time-varying acoustic environment.

Abstract:To Improve the weakness of the traditional active noise control system was not able to optionally control different frequency band noises and was easy to be disturbed by random disturbance, this paper proposed an adaptive active sound quality control(AASQC) method which used the active noise equalization(ANE) theory and FELMS algorithm as a kernel. The AASQC method can effectively solve the problem of disturbance in transmission bands by introducing and adjusting gain coefficient to implement the controllable cancellation of noises. Under Matlab/Simulink software environment, the AASQC algorithm was compared with the traditional adaptive active noise control algorithm FXLMS. The simulation results showed that the AASQC algorithm described above was of good stability and robustness in active sound quality control, and sound quality could be improved remarkably.

Abstract:A number of projects have been carried out in Nanjing University to implement active noise control technologies, which include active control of transformer noise, active sound barrier, active noise control in communication chassis, active noise control in natural ventilation windows, active control of large impulsive noise in headset and active noise control in a train compartment. Unlike our previous research, these projects are all funded by industries and the aim is not for doing academic research, but to make commercial prototypes. Various challenges in the implementation of active noise control technologies in these projects to make commercial products are reported and discussed, and main issues to make successful commercial active noise control products are pointed out.

Abstract:Construction workers and residents live near around construction sites are exposed to noises that might cause hearing loss, high blood pressure, heart disease, sleep disturbance and stress. Regulations has been carried out by national governments to limit the maximum permissible noise levels for construction works. A four-channel active noise control system mounted on the opening of an enclosure is designed to prevent the machinery noise from spreading around and retaining the heat diffusion path. Multi-channel FxLMS algorithm in time domain is implemented on the main controller. A Genelec speaker is placed inside the box as the primary noise source to play back different types of noises. Analyses and experiments are carried out to investigate the controllable frequency range of this ANC system in detail. Considerable noise reduction performance is achieved for different recorded practical construction noises.

Abstract:The vehicle interior noise consists of both broadband road noise and narrowband engine order noise. Currently, the road noise control (RNC) system and engine noise control (EOC) system operate independently in engineering applications. This paper introduces a novel multi-channel hybrid broadband and narrowband active noise control (HBNANC) algorithm, designed to simultaneously attenuate road noise and engine order noise inside vehicles. On this basis, by integrating an error signal design (ESD) subsystem and a sinusoidal error separation (SES) subsystem, a multi-channel hybrid broadband and narrowband active sound profiling (HBNASP) algorithm is further proposed, enabling specific attenuation or amplification of individual narrowband components to meet subjective acoustic comfort requirements. The paper validates the algorithms’ effectiveness and robustness through simulations, and real vehicle experimental measurements under various conditions. The research offers a comprehensive approach to enhancing the auditory experience inside vehicles, contributing to the advancement of active noise control technology.

Abstract:With an increasing interest in personal audio systems, the car cabin is an important environment in which to generate different audio programs in different regions, without the use of headphones. Two algorithms, acoustic contrast control and the least squares method, are considered for producing two independent listening zones, one zone including the front passengers and the other including the rear passengers. The generation of an acceptable acoustic contrast between the front and rear zones, using an array of four standard audio loudspeakers, is limited to relatively low frequencies. In order to provide acceptable control over a larger audio bandwidth, a loudspeaker array mounted on the ceiling of a car cabin is investigated in this paper. A selection process for the configuration of the source array is described. Free field simulations are used to calculate the response of the source array and investigate the performance of the two control algorithms. Since the performance of the least squares method is dependent on the chosen target sound pressures, a method for selecting the target sound pressures is also proposed. Finally, the proposed loudspeaker array is implemented in a real car and the measured results are found to be similar to those predicted from the simulations.

Abstract:In the field of acoustics,a parametric array is a nonlinear effect that generates narrow,nearly side-lobe-free beam of low frequency sound wave with high directivity,through the mixing and interaction of high frequency sound wave,effectively overcoming the diffraction effect limit associated with linear acoustics.In this paper,three signal processing schemes used in parametric acoustic array,DSB-AM,SSB-AM and SRAM,are presented and analyzed using Simulink.Results show that,despite of the drawback of lower amplitude of output signal,SRAM has the much lower harmonic distortion,when compared to DSB-AM or SSB-AM.

Abstract:Active noise control (ANC) technology has been applied to reduce low frequency noise in vehicle cabins. Different from ANC in laboratory conditions, installation of the ANC system in vehicles for a long term use requires the solution of a number of practical issues. This paper reports the progress of a couple of practical ANC installations, and the implication and solution of practical issues such as magnitude and frequency variations (corresponding to different vehicle operating conditions) of the primary and reference signals, and poor coherence between primary and reference signals.

Abstract:Active noise control (ANC) is an effective way for reducing the noise level in electroacoustic or electromechanical systems. Since its first introduction in 1936, this approach has been greatly developed. This paper focuses on discussing the development of ANC techniques over the past decade. Linear ANC algorithms, including the celebrated filtered-x least-mean-square (FxLMS)-based algorithms and distributed ANC algorithms, are investigated and evaluated. Nonlinear ANC (NLANC) techniques, such as functional link artificial neural network (FLANN)-based algorithms, are pursued in Part II. Furthermore, some novel methods and applications of ANC emerging in the past decade are summarized. Finally, future research challenges regarding the ANC technique are discussed.

Spatially Selective Active Noise Control Systems

Abstract:Active noise control (ANC) systems are commonly designed to achieve maximal sound reduction regardless of the incident direction of the sound. When desired sound is present, the state-of-the-art methods add a separate system to reconstruct it. This can result in distortion and latency. In this work, we propose a multi-channel ANC system that only reduces sound from undesired directions, and the system truly preserves the desired sound instead of reproducing it. The proposed algorithm imposes a spatial constraint on the hybrid ANC cost function to achieve spatial selectivity. Based on a six-channel microphone array on a pair of augmented eyeglasses, results show that the system minimized only noise coming from undesired directions. The control performance could be maintained even when the array was heavily perturbed. The proposed algorithm was also compared with the existing methods in the literature. Not only did the proposed system provide better noise reduction, but it also required much less effort. The binaural localization cues did not need to be reconstructed since the system preserved the physical sound wave from the desired source.

Abstract:Excessive workplace noise affects human health, safety, and comfort. Noise control in the workplace becomes necessary if the noise exceeds the level specified by noise regulations. This paper presents examples of active noise control (ANC) in three different workplaces, namely the cabin of a mining truck, the wheelhouse of a high-speed patrol boat, and the cabin of a locomotive on a mining site. Within those workplaces, complaints of low-frequency noise were registered and an effective reduction of the low-frequency noise was difficult using traditional methods. Unlike ANC under laboratory conditions, application of ANC systems in the cabins of working vehicles requires the solution of a number of practical issues and concerns based on subjective feedback of the operators, which are also briefly discussed.
Robust Time Domain Acoustic Contrast Control in an Arc-Shaped Area Using A Linear Loudspeaker Array

Abstract:An acoustic contrast control method for generating sound field in an arc-shaped area using a linear loudspeaker array was recently developed, where the boundary of the arc-shaped area was treated as the envelope of the tangent lines that can be formed by manipulating the phase profile of the loudspeaker array. This paper investigates the mechanism, robustness and the time domain performance of the method for reproducing speech signals. First, the mechanism of the method is thoroughly studied and it is found that the method is based on the stationary phase method which usually works well in high frequency region. Second, the robustness of the method to loudspeaker responses and loudspeaker positions is examined. The effects of these factors on the acoustic contrast and acoustic uniformity are demonstrated. Third, the time domain performance of the method is investigated and compared with the traditional acoustic contrast control method. PESQ (Perceptual Evaluation of Speech Quality) criterion is utilized to evaluate the sound quality at different receiving points inside the bright zone based on numerical experiments. Being compared with the traditional acoustic contrast control method, the method proposed in this paper has better time domain performance and is more robust to loudspeaker uncertainties. The proposed method provides a promising technique for sound reproduction in an arc-shaped area.

Abstract:Active noise control systems have been applied to increase the insertion loss of noise barriers where the squared sound pressure or the total acoustic energy density is used as the cost function in previous works. The absolute value of the mean active sound intensity is chosen as the cost function to obtain extra sound insertion loss in the dark area of a hybrid active noise barrier system in this note. The strategy of minimizing the near-field sound intensity at discrete locations along the edge of the passive barrier is shown to be able to provide better far-field noise reduction than that of minimizing the squared sound pressure control. Both numerical simulations and off-line experiments are carried out with a three-channel demonstration system, where the locations of the secondary sources and the error sensors are optimized and comparisons are made between the extra sound pressure attenuation of the sound intensity control and that of the squared sound pressure control.

Abstract:Active Noise Control (ANC) is a widely adopted technology for reducing environmental noise across various scenarios. This paper focuses on enhancing noise reduction performance, particularly through the refinement of signal quality fed into ANC systems. We discuss the main wireless technique integrated into the ANC system, equipped with some innovative algorithms, in diverse environments. Instead of using microphone arrays, which increase the computation complexity of the ANC system, to isolate multiple noise sources to improve noise reduction performance, the application of the wireless technique avoids extra computation demand. Wireless transmissions of reference, error, and control signals are also applied to improve the convergence performance of the ANC system. Furthermore, this paper lists some wireless ANC applications, such as earbuds, headphones, windows, and headrests, underscoring their adaptability and efficiency in various settings.
