Abstract:Frequency dynamic can be a macro manifestation of power system active power imbalance. Thus, the study of frequency dynamic behavior in renewable integrated power systems is of great significance. There is inseparable correlation between space and time for the characteristics of frequency dynamic oscillation. However, existing analysis methods are typically restricted by time. Complex empirical orthogonal function (CEOF) is a modal decomposition algorithm that describes high-dimensional dynamic data using coupled spatial-temporal modes. In this paper, CEOF is adopted to analysis the frequency dataset obtained from disturbed power grids. The frequency datasets are decomposed into the forms of time and space functions. The propagation direction and speed can be described by phase of space and time functions, respectively. The distribution of disturbance energy is shown by the amplitude of both functions. These indexes are reasonable to reflect the spatial-temporal characteristics of frequency dynamic oscillation. Two test systems are used to verify the validity of CEOF. The spatial-temporal characteristics are exacted by the proposed method. Resulting analysis indicate that CEOF is generally applicable as a useful method in the analysing and understanding of frequency dynamic behavior in power grids with high proportion of renewables.
