Abstract:Tetraphenylethylene-based covalent organic framework (COF-DHTA) was prepared and then well characterized. COF-DHTA processes regular pore structure and high thermal stability. COF-DHTA suspension in DMF displays moderate fluorescence emission in DMF suspension and a highly selective fluorescence "turn-on" response towards Al3+ ions. The fluorescence intensity of COF-DHTA suspension at the emission peak 352 nm exhibits a good linear relationship with the concentration of the added Al3+ ions with a very low detection limit of 0.927 μmol/L. The selective and sensitive fluorescence enhancement recognition and detection for Al3+ ions can be attributed to the coordination of Al3+ ions with N and O atoms on the COF-DHTA and the suppression of photoinduced electron transfer (PET). The results of the N2 adsorption experiment, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory (DFT) calculation verified the coordination interaction between Al3+ ion and the N and O chelating sites on COF-DHTA. This work may pave the way to reasonable design fluorescent COF chemosensors for the recognition and detection of specific metal ions.

Abstract:The development of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) based fluorescence sensors in detection of metal ions attracted significant interests. In this study, a novel 2D MOF Tb-DBA was constructed using Tb3+ and 2'-amino-1,1':4,1''-terphenyl-4,4''-dicarboxylic acid (H2DBA) by solvothermal method. Tb-DBA could detect Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions rapidly, sensitively, selectively and reversibly. The detection limit is as low as nM level. Tb-DBA displayed fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions. Significantly, Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions could be visually detected under UV light. Additionally, Tb-DBA could also act as an indicator for alkaline solutions when pH>10. The detection mechanism was studied by ICP, EDS and PXRD tests. The studies illustrated that cation exchange proceed between Tb-DBA and Al3+, Cr3+, Fe3+ ions, which inhibited the energy transfer from DBA to Tb3+ and enhanced the π*-π transitions of DBA.

Abstract:The development of porphyrin-based metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted significant interest in the scientific community in recent years because of their versatile applications particularly in optical and electronic fields. In this study, a highly selective and sensitive fluorescent turn-on sensor using a porphyrinic MOF, Tb-TCPP, is presented, which displays a 10-fold fluorescence enhancement in the presence of Al3+, Cr3+, and Fe3+ ions. The detection limit is in the nM region. For the Al3+ ion, it could be visually detected at concentrations as low as 5 mM within 15 min. Tb-TCPP could also be used as an indicator for acidic or alkaline solutions at pH values of >9 and <3. The studies on the detection mechanism illustrate that cation exchange proceed between Tb-TCPP and these M3+ ions, and consequently, energy transfer from TCPP to Tb3+ is suppressed and pi*-pi energy transfer of the porphyrin ligand is significantly enhanced.

Abstract:In this work, a novel zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF) composite material, UiO-(OH)2@RhB, has been solvothermally prepared with zirconyl chloride octahydrate, 2,5-dihydroxyterephthalic acid, and rhodamine B (RhB) for ratiometric fluorescence sensing of Al3+ ions in an aqueous medium. The luminescence measurement results showed that, at the single excitation wavelength of 420 nm, the fluorescence intensity of the ligand at 500 nm increased significantly in the case of Al3+, while that of RhB at 583 nm changed slightly, together with an apparent color change. Under optimal conditions, UiO-(OH)2@RhB exhibited an extraordinary sensitivity (10 nM), good selectivity, and a fast response (2 min) for Al3+. As far as we know, the limit of detection is superior to that of the current reported MOF-based Al3+ fluorescence sensors. The response mechanism suggested that -OH could capture Al3+ in water through coordination and high electrostatic affinity and achieved turn-on ratiometric fluorescence through the excited-state intramolecular proton transfer process and stable fluorescence of RhB. In addition, this sensor was also applied to actual food samples (grain beans), with the recoveries ranging from 89.08% to 113.61%. Such a turn-on ratiometric fluorescence sensor will provide a constructive strategy for the ultrasensitive detection of Al3+ in practical applications.

Abstract:A novel luminescent metal-organic framework (MOF) {[Co-3(phen)(2)(HL)(2)]center dot(H2O)(2)}(n)(1) (H4L = 3,3',5, 5'-azoxybenzenetetracarboxylic acid, phen = Phenanthroline) was successfully prepared under solvothermal conditions. Its structure has been identified by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, elemental analysis, powder X-ray diffraction and thermogravimetric analysis. Additionally, the importance of the weak interactions to stabilize the structure of 1 has been discussed by Hirshfeld surfaces and the corresponding 2D fingerprint plots (FPs). Remarkably, 1 has high thermal stability up to 360 degrees C and excellent chemical stability in water with wide pH range of 2-11. Luminescence studies show 1 can recognize Fe3+ and Al3+ with high selectivity from mixed metal ions in aqueous solutions through the luminescence quenching and enhancement phenomenon, respectively. Furthermore, 1 can also detect PA with good selectivity and sensitivity among large common nitro-aromatic compounds (NACs).
Highly selective and turn-on fluorescence probe with red shift emission for naked-eye detecting Al3+ and Ga3+ based on metal-organic framework

Abstract:A novel ZnII-based metal-organic framework with the formula of {[Zn2(BBIP)2(NDC)2]•H2O}n (JXUST-5) derived from 3,5-bis(benzimidazol-1-yl)pyridine (BBIP) and 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid (H2NDC) has been synthesized. The adjacent ZnII ions are linked through two BBIP ligands to form a [Zn2(BBIP)2] secondary building unit (SBU). The neighbouring SBUs are further connected by NDC2− with μ2-η1:η1 and μ2-η1:η1:η1 bridging modes to form a two-dimensional (2D) framework. Topological analysis shows that JXUST-5 could be simplified as an uninodal fes topology with a point symbol of {4.82}. Furthermore, the 2D framework net could be extended through C-H•••π interaction to form the three-dimensional supramolecular structure. Luminescent experiments suggest that JXUST-5 could selectively and sensitively recognize Al3+ and Ga3+ through fluorescence enhancement effect along with a relatively large red shift. The detection limits for Al3+ and Ga3+ are 0.17 and 0.69 ppm, respectively. Interestingly, the sensing process for both Al3+ and Ga3+ could be directly observed with naked eyes under 365 nm UV lamp. Notably, JXUST-5 could be recycled at least five times as a fluorescent sensor toward Al3+ and Ga3+, which is the second example of turn-on MOF based fluorescent sensor toward Ga3+.

Abstract:Fluoride (F-) and Al3+ are two common ions existing in drinking water and natural water bodies. Excessive intake of F- can lead to serious health issues such as fluorosis and bone diseases while accumulated consumption of Al3+ may cause neurotoxicity-based diseases. Developing a fast, reliable, and sensitive sensor for visually detecting both F- and Al3+ is of great significance. In the present work, a ratiometric fluorescence sensor was constructed by incorporating rhodamine B (RhB) in situ into a zirconium-based metal-organic framework, UiO-66-NH2. The obtained nanocomposite UiO-66NH(2)@RhB exhibited similar octahedral structure to UiO-66-NH2 with high BET surface area, and showed two emission peaks at 450 nm and 585 nm. The blue fluorescence from UiO-66-NH2 was enhanced by the addition of F- while subsequent Al3+ addition diminished the increased fluorescence intensity, and the red emission from RhB as the reference remained unchangeable to improve the detection precision. Under optimal conditions, detection of limits as low as 1.55 mu M for F- and 0.54 mu M for Al3+ in aqueous solution were achieved with good selectivity. High recoveries in drinking water samples were also acquired, showing potential applications of this ratiometric fluorescence sensor for practical evaluation of F- and Al3+. (C) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:A 3D microporous compound Al(OH) (H(2)btec)center dot H2O (MIL-121) containing uncoordinated carbonyl groups is selected as a parent metal organic framework (MOF). Moreover, because the uncoordinated carbonyl groups in the channels could act as a postsynthetic modification sites, a robust luminescent lanthanide-based MOP can be constructed by encapsulating Eu3+ cations into the pores of MIL-121. The intense luminescence of Eu3+ incorporated MIL-121 products demonstrates that the framework with rigid, permanently porous structure and non-coordinated carboxyl group is an efficient scaffold for hosting and sensitizing Eu3+ cations. More significantly, the robust Eu3+@MIL-121 shows excellent selectivity, fast detection time (<5 min), and high sensitivity (detection limit, 0.1 mu M) for Ag+ ions in aqueous solution due to a great enhancement of the Eu3+-luminescence. This is a rare example of Ag+ detection in aqueous solutions based on a luminescent lanthanide MOFs.

Abstract:The excessive Fe3+ and Bi3+ can cause serious hazard to human-being and microorganisms. However, it remains great challenging to exploit more efficient method to detect them. In this work, a two-dimensional (2-D) metal-organic framework (MOF) [Cd(3-L)(NDA)(H2O)]n (1) (3-L = 3,3'-((9H-fluoren-9-ylidene)-methylene)dipyridine; H2NDA = 1,4-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid) was successfully fabricated by a new fluorenyl-containing aggregation-induced emission (AIE) functional ligand. 1 features a 2-D (4,4) network, and good water and thermal stability. In its stacking structure, the fluorene rings from neighboring layers overlap with each other on the opposite direction, and shows very weak π-π interactions. Accordingly, 1 exhibits superior luminescence enhancement (''turn-on'') sensing of Fe3+ and Bi3+ with extremely high sensitivity in aqueous medium. The detection limits of 1 for Fe3+ and Bi3+ are 4.86×10-4 and 1.87×10-5 mM, respectively, which are significantly lower than the corresponding reported works (only 23.6 % and 0.8 %). Interestingly, it has obviously enhanced Bi3+ detecting ability because of larger ionic radius for Bi3+. More importantly, this is the first MOF-based ''turn-on'' sensor for Bi3+ up to date.

Abstract:The pillared-layer Metal–Organic Framework (MOF) enjoys good tunability and rich functionality, yet highly relies on rational combination of mixed ligands. A new MOF formulated as [Zn2(trz)2(btdb)]·4DMF (1, trz = 1,2,4-triazole, H2btdb = 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl) dibenzoic acid) is constructed from a [Zn2] node based (4,4)-grid layer that pillared by inclined a highly fluorescent dicarboxylate linkers. The rigid [Zn2(trz)2] layer coupled with hydrogen bonding encompassed Zn-carboxyl linkage endow the MOF desired high stability. The crystalline structure of 1 maintains well in harsh conditions including pH = 3 HCl and pH = 12 NaOH aqueous solution for more than 24 h. With high void fraction of 42.7%, the interconnected 3D channels sized at 4.0∼8.8 Å guarantee sufficient exposure of thiadiazole in the pillar ligand as potential sensing site. With bright fluorescence of 1, Fe3+ ions can be selectively and specifically detected in both aqueous and non-aqueous solution through quenching mechanism, given a detection limit of 3.1 and 17.0 μM in methanol and H2O solution, respectively.

Abstract:The wide applications of metal-organic framework (MOF) luminescent materials in the field of optics have attracted the general attention of researchers. Therefore, the development of simple and multifunctional MOF light-emitting platforms have become a research hotspot. The composites (MnO2@ZIF-8-luminol) were prepared by an in situ synthesis method and room-temperature covalent reaction. The composites and o-phenylenediamine (OPD) constitute a dual emission sensor for detecting alanine aminotransferase (ALT). OPD can be oxidized by MnO2 to 2,3-diaminophenazine (DAP) with yellow fluorescence emission, which inhibits the blue emission of luminol through fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET). The presence of tiopronin (TP) will destroy the FRET process, extinguishing the yellow fluorescence emission and restoring the blue fluorescence emission. The special effect between ALT and TP will further reverse the changes in the two fluorescent signals. Moreover, in the detection process, when the blue and yellow fluorescence energies in the system are within a certain range, a new white light emission will be generated, which causes the sensing of ALT to present ternary visualization. In addition, a high-security anti-counterfeiting platform is constructed by using the prepared materials and agarose hydrogels. The anti-counterfeiting platform can encrypt information on demand according to the luminous characteristics of different materials. This study not only provides a typical case of ternary visualization sensing by MOF-based materials but also develops a possible method for the construction of a MOF-based hydrogel anti-counterfeiting platform.
A Benzothiadiazole-Based Eu 3+ Metal–Organic Framework as the Turn-On Luminescent Sensor toward Al 3+ and Ga 3+ with Potential Bioimaging Application

Abstract:The design and preparation of novel multifunctional lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) have been arisen widespread attention. In particular, Ln-MOFs have shown great luminescence potential in chemical sensing. Herein, a new benzothiadiazole-based Eu-MOF {[(CH3)2NH2][Eu(BTDB)2]·2H2O}n (JXUST-11) was obtained based on 4,4'-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)dibenzoic acid (H2BTDB), which exhibits a chain-based three-dimensional framework. Moreover, JXUST-11 is considered as a photoluminescent sensor to identify Al3+ and Ga3+ ions by fluorescence enhancement with the detection limits of 2.9 and 10.2 ppm, severally. Importantly, Al3+ and Ga3+ can be discerned with the naked eye by color change under a natural lamp. In addition, a portable MOF film based on JXUST-11 was developed for Al3+ and Ga3+ detection. This is the first Ln-MOF that can be employed as a naked-eye fluorescent probe to identify Ga3+. Interestingly, JXUST-11 is also capable of detecting Al3+ and Ga3+ in living cells.

Abstract:A dual-functional sensor based on a two-dimensional metal–organic framework (MOF), namely, {[Cd(BBZB)(2,6-NDC)]·CH3OH} n (JXUST-6, BBZB = 4,7-bis(1H-benzimidazole-1-yl)-2,1,3-benzothiadiazole and 2,6-NDC = 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylate), has been designed and synthesized under solvothermal conditions. JXUST-6 exhibits good stability in aqueous solution, boiling water, and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution. Luminesecence studies of JXUST-6 reveal the existence of fluorescence red shift toward Al3+ and Ga3+ accompanied by turn-on fluorescence response. After gradually adding Al3+ solution to JXUST-6 suspended solution, the emission peak moved from 505 to 529 nm and triggered the color conversion from yellow to yellow-green under 365 UV light irradiation. Similarly, the addition of Ga3+ to JXUST-6 suspended solution caused the enhancement of fluorescence intensity as well as the red-shift from 505 to 530 nm. The detection limits of JXUST-6 toward Al3+ and Ga3+ ions are 0.081 and 0.047 ppm, respectively. Actually, the test paper can be used to sense Al3+ and Ga3+ ions, thereby expanding the potential application scope of JXUST-6. Importantly, JXUST-6 represents the rare turn-on MOF toward Ga3+. The red-shift effect of JXUST-6 toward Al3+ and Ga3+ could account for the formation of a strong exciplex between JXUST-6 and Al3+ and Ga3+. The theoretical caculation suggests that the occurrence of strong intramolecular charge transfer leads to turn-on effect toward Al3+ and Ga3+ ions.

Abstract:A series of new compounds (1-4) based on pyrrole hydrazone Schiff bases were designed and synthesized. The interactions of these new compounds with metal ions and their fluorescent recognition were investigated. All compounds showed "turn-on" fluorescence in the presence of Al3+ in aqueous solution. Their sensing behaviors with Al3+ were studied using photophysical experiments, ESI-MS spectrometry analysis, 1H NMR titration, and DFT calculation. The detection limits of 1-4 for the analysis of Al3+ were found to reach a 10−8 M level in aqueous solution, which are far lower than the WHO guidelines for drinking water (7.41 mM for Al3+). A high selectivity test paper has been fabricated for Al3+ detection based on sensor 3. Theoretical calculations (DFT) have been carried out to elucidate the configuration of 1-4 and their Al complexes and rationalize experimental absorption data.

In this work, a kind of Terbium-based metal-organic framework fluorescent probe (Tb-MOF) is facilely fabricated which displays ultra-high selective detection of Fe3+ and Al3+ against various coexistence ions (i. e. Mn2+, Co2+, K+, Ca2+, Na+, Mg2+, Cd2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Ni2+, Pb2+ and Cr3+). The obtained Tb-MOF exhibits the emission at 547 nm and possesses the outstanding thermal, fluorescent and chemical stability. Tb-MOF shows a ratiometric fluorescence signal for Al3+, and the detection limits for Fe3+ and Al3+ ions are 0.91 and 6.10 μM, respectively. Moreover, the fluorescence intensities and concentrations of Fe3+ and Al3+ have good linear relationships in wide concentration ranges. Furthermore, the quantifications of Fe3+ and Al3+ are acquired in complex tap and river waters with good recoveries. This study offers a facile and efficient method of developing the fluorescent probe which possesses the ability to quantify Fe3+ and Al3+ in real environment waters.

Abstract:The fluorescence of two-dimensional (2D) covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are generally quenched by the strong layer-layer π-π stacking or the intramolecular rotation. However, the latter effect can be reduced if the intramolecular rotation in COFs can be restricted through the selective coordination with metal ions or small molecules. Herein, we demonstrate that the fluorescence of p-methoxyl group-substituted imine-based COFs can be dramatically enhanced after coordination with Al3+ compared with other metal cations (i.e. Fe3+, Ni2+, Cd2+, Mn2+, Co2+, Zn2+, Hg2+, Ba2+, Mg2+ and K+) while o-methoxyl group-substituted one has no such phenomena, which might be due to the rotation of the uncoordinated CN and C–O bonds in one side.
