Abstract:Molecular gas serves as a key probe of the complex interplay between black hole accretion and star formation in the host galaxies of active galactic nuclei (AGNs). We use CO(2–1) observations from a new Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array survey, in conjunction with literature measurements, to investigate the molecular gas properties of a representative sample of 40 z < 0.3 Palomar–Green quasars, the largest and most sensitive study of molecular gas emission to date for nearby quasars. We find that the AGN luminosity correlates with both the CO luminosity and black hole mass, suggesting that AGN activity is loosely coupled to the cold gas reservoir of the host. The observed strong correlation between host galaxy total infrared luminosity and AGN luminosity arises from their common dependence on the molecular gas. We argue that the total infrared luminosity, at least for low-redshift quasars, can be used to derive reliable star formation rates for the host galaxy. The host galaxies of low-redshift quasars have a molecular gas content similar to that of star-forming galaxies of comparable stellar mass. Moreover, they share similar gas kinematics, as evidenced by their CO Tully–Fisher relation and the absence of detectable molecular outflows down to sensitive limits. There is no sign that AGN feedback quenches star formation for the quasars in our sample. On the contrary, the abundant gas supply forms stars prodigiously, at a rate that places most of them above the star-forming main sequence and with an efficiency that rivals that of starburst systems.

Abstract:Large-scale cosmological simulations suggest that feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) plays a crucial role in galaxy evolution. In this study, we directly test this hypothesis utilising SDSS spectra of a sample of 48 low redshift (z<0.14) type 2 quasars (QSO2s). We characterised the kinematics of the warm ionised gas by performing a non-parametric analysis of the [OIII]$\lambda 5007$ emission line, as well as constrain the properties of the young stellar populations (YSP) of their host galaxies through spectral synthesis modelling. These analyses revealed that 85% of the QSO2s display gas velocity dispersions larger than that of the stellar component of their host galaxies, indicating the presence of AGN-driven outflows. Comparing the gas kinematics to the AGN properties, we found a positive correlation between gas velocity dispersion and 1.4 GHz radio luminosity but not with AGN bolometric luminosity or Eddington ratio, suggesting that, either the radio luminosity is the key factor in driving outflows or that the outflows themselves are shocking the ISM and producing synchrotron emission. We found that 98% of the sample host YSPs to varying degrees, with star formation rates (SFR) $0 \le SFR \le 92 \mbox{ M}_{\odot} \mbox{yr}^{-1}$, averaged over 100 Myr. We compared the gas kinematics and outflow properties to the SFRs to establish possible correlations which may suggest that the presence of the outflowing gas is impacting SF and find that none exists, leading to the conclusion that, on the scales probed by the SDSS fibre, AGN-driven outflows do not impact SF on the timescales probed in this study. However, we found a positive correlation between the light-weighted stellar ages of the QSO2s and the black hole mass, which may indicate that successive AGN episodes lead to the suppression of SF over the course of galaxy evolution.

Stellar and Quasar Feedback in Concert: Effects on AGN Accretion, Obscuration, and Outflows

Abstract:We study the interaction of feedback from active galactic nuclei (AGN) and a multi-phase interstellar medium (ISM), in simulations including explicit stellar feedback, multi-phase cooling, accretion-disk winds, and Compton heating. We examine radii ~0.1-100 pc around a black hole (BH), where the accretion rate onto the BH is determined and where AGN-powered winds and radiation couple to the ISM. We conclude: (1) The BH accretion rate is determined by exchange of angular momentum between gas and stars in gravitational instabilities. This produces accretion rates ~0.03-1 Msun/yr, sufficient to power luminous AGN. (2) The gas disk in the galactic nucleus undergoes an initial burst of star formation followed by several Myrs where stellar feedback suppresses the star formation rate (SFR). (3) AGN winds injected at small radii with momentum fluxes ~L/c couple efficiently to the ISM and have dramatic effects on ISM properties within ~100 pc. AGN winds suppress the nuclear SFR by factors ~10-30 and BH accretion rate by factors ~3-30. They increase the outflow rate from the nucleus by factors ~10, consistent with observational evidence for galaxy-scale AGN-driven outflows. (4) With AGN feedback, the predicted column density distribution to the BH is consistent with observations. Absent AGN feedback, the BH is isotropically obscured and there are not enough optically-thin sightlines to explain Type-I AGN. A 'torus-like' geometry arises self-consistently as AGN feedback evacuates gas in polar regions.

Abstract:How galaxies maintain the inefficiency of star formation with physically self-consistent models is a central problem in understanding galaxy evolution. Although numerous theoretical models have been proposed in recent decades, the debate continues. By means of high-resolution two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations, we study the three feedback effects (the stellar wind heating, supernova (SN) feedback, and active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback) in suppressing star formation activities on the evolution of early-type galaxies with different stellar masses. The AGN feedback models are updated from work by Yuan et al. The gas sources arise exclusively from the mass losses of dying low-mass stars for most of our models. We find that SN feedback can keep star formation at a significantly low level for low-mass elliptical galaxies for a cosmological evolution time. For high-mass galaxies, AGN feedback can efficiently offset radiative cooling and thus regulate star formation activity. Such a suppression of star formation is extremely efficient in the inner regions of galaxies. Asymptotic giant branch heating cannot account for this suppression for low-or high-mass galaxies. The X-ray temperature T-X and luminosity L-X of hot plasma can be in agreement with the observed data with the inclusion of effective feedback processes. These results thus suggest that we can use T-X and L-X to probe the role of different feedback processes. The inclusion of additional gas sources can cause the mass scale between SN and AGN feedback to dominate in suppressing star formation decrease to an observationally inferred value of a few 10(10) M-circle dot.

Abstract:The interstellar medium is crucial to understanding the physics of active galaxies and the coevolution between supermassive black holes and their host galaxies. However, direct gas measurements are limited by sensitivity and other uncertainties. Dust provides an efficient indirect probe of the total gas. We apply this technique to a large sample of quasars, whose total gas content would be prohibitively expensive to measure. We present a comprehensive study of the full (1 to 500 micron) infrared spectral energy distributions of 87 redshift <0.5 quasars selected from the Palomar-Green sample, using photometric measurements from 2MASS, WISE, and Herschel, combined with Spitzer mid-infrared (5 to 40 micron) spectra. With a newly developed Bayesian Markov Chain Monte Carlo fitting method, we decompose various overlapping contributions to the integrated spectral energy distribution, including starlight, warm dust from the torus, and cooler dust on galaxy scales. This procedure yields a robust dust mass, which we use to infer the gas mass, using a gas-to-dust ratio constrained by the host galaxy stellar mass. Most (90%) quasar hosts have gas fractions similar to those of massive, star-forming galaxies, although a minority (10%) seem genuinely gas-deficient, resembling present-day massive early-type galaxies. This result indicates that "quasar mode" feedback does not occur or is ineffective in the host galaxies of low-redshift quasars. We also find that quasars can boost the interstellar radiation field and heat dust on galactic scales. This cautions against the common practice of using the far-infrared luminosity to estimate the host galaxy star formation rate.

Abstract:Feedback from quasars and AGNs is being invoked frequently in several cosmological settings. Currently, order of magnitude, or more, uncertainties in the structure of both the wind and the 'obscuring torus' make predictions highly uncertain. To make testable models of this 'cosmological feedback' it is essential to understand the detailed structure of AGNs sufficiently well to predict their properties for the whole quasar population, at all redshifts. Progress in both areas is rapid, and I describe the near-term prospects for reducing these uncertainties for 'slow' (non-relativistic) AGN winds and the obscuring torus.

Abstract:We present the first systematic study of the molecular gas and star formation efficiency in a sample of ten narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxies selected to have X-ray Ultra Fast Outflows and, therefore, to potentially show AGN feedback effects. CO observations were obtained with the IRAM 30m telescope in six galaxies and from the literature for four galaxies. We derived the stellar mass, star formation rate, AGN and FIR dust luminosities by fitting the multi-band spectral energy distributions with the CIGALE code. Most of the galaxies in our sample lie above the main sequence (MS) and the molecular depletion time is one to two orders of magnitude shorter than the one typically measured in local star-forming galaxies. Moreover, we found a promising correlation between the star formation efficiency and the Eddington ratio, as well as a tentative correlation with the AGN luminosity. The role played by the AGN activity in the regulation of star formation within the host galaxies of our sample remains uncertain (little or no effect? positive feedback?). Nevertheless, we can conclude that quenching by the AGN activity is minor and that star formation will likely stop in a short time due to gas exhaustion by the current starburst episode.

AGNs and Starbursts: What Is the Real Connection?

Abstract:It is now widely believed that the growth of massive black holes is closely linked to the formation of galaxies, but there have been few concrete constraints on the actual physical processes responsible for this coupling. Investigating the connection between AGN and starburst activity may offer some empirical guidance on this problem. I summarize previous observational searches for young stars in active galaxies, concluding that there is now compelling evidence for a significant post-starburst population in many luminous AGNs, and that a direct, causal link may exist between star formation and black hole accretion. Quantifying the ongoing star formation rate in AGNs, however, is much more challenging because of the strong contamination by the active nucleus. I discuss recent work attempting to measure the star formation rate in luminous AGNs and quasars. The exceptionally low level of coeval star formation found in these otherwise gas-rich systems suggests that the star formation efficiency in the host galaxies is suppressed in the presence of strong AGN feedback.
Local positive feedback in the overall negative: the impact of quasar winds on star formation in the FIRE cosmological simulations

Abstract:Negative feedback from accreting supermassive black holes is regarded as a key ingredient in suppressing star formation and quenching massive galaxies. However, several models and observations suggest that black hole feedback may have a positive effect, triggering star formation by compressing interstellar medium gas to higher densities. We investigate the dual role of black hole feedback using cosmological hydrodynamic simulations from the Feedback In Realistic Environments (FIRE) project, including a novel implementation of hyper-refined accretion-disc winds. Focusing on a massive, star-forming galaxy at $z \sim 2$ ($M_{\rm halo} \sim 10^{12.5} \, {\rm M}_{\odot}$), we show that strong quasar winds with kinetic power $\sim$10$^{46}$ erg/s acting for $>$20$\,$Myr drive the formation of a central gas cavity and can dramatically reduce the star formation rate surface density across the galaxy disc. The suppression of star formation is primarily driven by reducing the amount of gas that can become star-forming, compared to directly evacuating the pre-existing star-forming gas reservoir (preventive feedback dominates over ejective feedback). Despite the global negative impact of quasar winds, we identify several plausible signatures of local positive feedback, including: (1) spatial anti-correlation of wind-dominated regions and star-forming clumps, (2) higher local star formation efficiency in compressed gas near the edge of the cavity, and (3) increased local contribution of outflowing material to star formation. Stars forming under the presence of quasar winds tend to do so at larger radial distances. Our results suggest that positive and negative AGN feedback can coexist in galaxies, but local positive triggering of star formation plays a minor role in global galaxy growth.

The Quasar Feedback Survey: characterising CO excitation in quasar host galaxies

Abstract:We present a comprehensive study of the molecular gas properties of 17 Type 2 quasars at $z <$ 0.2 from the Quasar Feedback Survey (L$_{[OIII]}$ > $10^{42.1}$ $\rm ergs^{-1}$), selected by their high [OIII] luminosities and displaying a large diversity of radio jet properties, but dominated by LIRG-like galaxies. With these data, we are able to investigate the impact of AGN and AGN feedback mechanisms on the global molecular interstellar medium. Using APEX and ALMA ACA observations, we measure the total molecular gas content using the CO(1-0) emission and homogeneously sample the CO spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs), observing CO transitions (J$_{up}$ = 1, 2, 3, 6, 7). We observe high $r_{21}$ ratios (r$_{21}$ = L'$_{CO(2-1)}$/L'$_{CO(1-0)}$) with a median $r_{21}$ = 1.06, similar to local (U)LIRGs (with $r_{21}$ $\sim$ 1) and higher than normal star-forming galaxies (with r$_{21}$ $\sim$ 0.65). Despite the high $r_{21}$ values, for the 7 targets with the required data we find low excitation in CO(6-5) & CO(7-6) ($r_{61}$ and $r_{62}$ < 0.6 in all but one target), unlike high redshift quasars in the literature, which are far more luminous and show higher line ratios. The ionised gas traced by [OIII] exhibit systematically higher velocities than the molecular gas traced by CO. We conclude that any effects of quasar feedback (e.g. via outflows and radio jets) do not have a significant instantaneous impact on the global molecular gas content and excitation and we suggest that it only occurs on more localised scales.

Feedback in Luminous Obscured Quasars

Abstract:We use spatially resolved long-slit spectroscopy from Magellan to investigate the extent, kinematics, and ionization structure in the narrow-line regions of 15 luminous, obscured quasars with z<0.5. Increasing the dynamic range in luminosity by an order of magnitude, as well as improving the depth of existing observations by a similar factor, we revisit relations between narrow-line region size and the luminosity and linewidth of the narrow emission lines. We find a slope of 0.22 +/- 0.04 for the power-law relationship between size and luminosity, suggesting that the nebulae are limited by availability of gas to ionize at these luminosities. In fact, we find that the active galactic nucleus is effectively ionizing the interstellar medium over the full extent of the host galaxy. Broad (~300-1000 km/s) linewidths across the galaxies reveal that the gas is kinematically disturbed. Furthermore, the rotation curves and velocity dispersions of the ionized gas remain constant out to large distances, in striking contrast to normal and starburst galaxies. We argue that the gas in the entire host galaxy is significantly disturbed by the central active galactic nucleus. While only ~10^7-10^8 M_sun worth of gas are directly observed to be leaving the host galaxies at or above their escape velocities, these estimates are likely lower limits because of the biases in both mass and outflow velocity measurements and may in fact be in accord with expectations from recent feedback models. Additionally, we report the discovery of two dual obscured quasars, one of which is blowing a large-scale (~10 kpc) bubble of ionized gas into the intergalactic medium.
On the Quenching of Star Formation in Observed and Simulated Central Galaxies: Evidence for the Role of Integrated AGN Feedback

Abstract:In this paper we investigate how massive central galaxies cease their star formation by comparing theoretical predictions from cosmological simulations: EAGLE, Illustris and IllustrisTNG with observations of the local Universe from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Our machine learning (ML) classification reveals supermassive black hole mass (M_ BH) as the most predictive parameter in determining whether a galaxy is star forming or quenched at redshift z=0 in all three simulations. This predicted consequence of active galactic nucleus (AGN) quenching is reflected in the observations, where it is true for a range of indirect estimates of M_ BH via proxies as well as its dynamical measurements. Our partial correlation analysis shows that other galactic parameters lose their strong association with quiescence, once their correlations with M_ BH are accounted for. In simulations we demonstrate that it is the integrated power output of the AGN, rather than its instantaneous activity, which causes galaxies to quench. Finally, we analyse the change in molecular gas content of galaxies from star forming to passive populations. We find that both gas fractions (f_ gas) and star formation efficiencies (SFEs) decrease upon transition to quiescence in the observations but SFE is more predictive than f_ gas in the ML passive/star-forming classification. These trends in the SDSS are most closely recovered in IllustrisTNG and are in direct contrast with the predictions made by Illustris. We conclude that a viable AGN feedback prescription can be achieved by a combination of preventative feedback and turbulence injection which together quench star formation in central galaxies.
Constraining Quasar Feedback from Analysis of the Hydrostatic Equilibrium of the Molecular Gas in Their Host Galaxies

Abstract:We investigate the kinematics and dynamics of the molecular and ionized gas in the host galaxies of three Palomar-Green quasars at low redshifts, benefiting from the archival millimeter-wave interferometric and optical integral field unit data. We study the kinematics of both cold molecular and hot ionized gas by analyzing the CO and H$\alpha$ data cubes, and construct the mass distributions of our sample through gas dynamics, utilizing a priori knowledge regarding the galaxy light distribution. We find no systematic offset between the stellar mass derived from our dynamical method and that from the broad-band photometry and mass-to-light ratio, suggesting the consistency of both methods. We then study the kinetic pressure and the weight of the interstellar medium using our dynamical mass model. By studying the relationship between kinetic pressure and gravitational pressure of the quasar host galaxies, we find an equivalence in the hydrostatic equilibrium states of ISM in the quasar host galaxies, similar to the result of gas equilibrium in normal star-forming galaxies, suggesting minimal quasar feedback. Regarding non-circular motion as indicative of quasar-driven outflows, we observe an exceptionally low coupling efficiency between molecular gas outflow and AGN bolometric luminosities. These results demonstrate the marginal influence of the central engine on the properties of cold molecular gas in quasar host galaxies.

Thermal and non-thermal traces of AGN feedback: results from cosmological AMR simulations

Abstract:We investigate the observable effects of feedback from Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) on non-thermal components of the intracluster medium (ICM). We have modelled feedback from AGN in cosmological simulations with the adaptive mesh refinement code ENZO, investigating three types of feedback that are sometimes called quasar, jet and radio mode. Using a small set of galaxy clusters simulated at high resolution, we model the injection and evolution of Cosmic Rays, as well as their effects on the thermal plasma. By comparing, both, the profiles of thermal gas to observed profiles from the ACCEPT sample, and the secondary gamma-ray emission to the available upper limits from FERMI, we discuss how the combined analysis of these two observables can constrain the energetics and mechanisms of feedback models in clusters. Those modes of AGN feedback that provide a good match to X-ray observations, yield a gamma-ray luminosity resulting from secondary cosmic rays that is about below the available upper limits from FERMI. Moreover, we investigate the injection of turbulent motions into the ICM from AGN, and the detectability of these motions via the analysis of line broadening of the Fe XXIII line. In the near future, deeper observations/upper-limits of non-thermal emissions from galaxy clusters will yield stringent constraints on the energetics and modes of AGN feedback, even at early cosmic epochs.

Abstract:Abstract Black hole feedback has been widely implemented as the key recipe to quench star formation in massive galaxies in modern semianalytic models and hydrodynamical simulations. As the theoretical details surrounding the accretion and feedback of black holes continue to be refined, various feedback models have been implemented across simulations, with notable differences in their outcomes. Yet, most of these simulations have successfully reproduced some observations, such as the stellar mass function and star formation rate density in the local universe. We use the recent observation of the change in the neutral hydrogen gas mass (including both H 2 and H I) with the star formation rate of massive central disk galaxies as a critical constraint of black hole feedback models across several simulations. We find that the predictions of IllustrisTNG agree with the observations much better than the other models tested in this work. This favors IllustrisTNG’s treatment of active galactic nuclei (AGN)—where kinetic winds are driven by black holes at low accretion rates—as more plausible among those we test. In turn, this also indirectly supports the idea that the massive central disk galaxy population in the local universe was likely quenched by AGN feedback.

We also constrained the properties of the young stellar populations (YSP; Myr $) of their host galaxies via spectral synthesis modelling. These analyses revealed that 85 of the QSO2s display velocity dispersions in the warm ionised gas phase greater than that of the stellar component of their host galaxies, indicating the presence of AGN-driven outflows. We compared the gas kinematics with the intrinsic properties of the AGN and found that there is a positive correlation between gas velocity dispersion and 1.4 GHz radio luminosity -- but not with the AGN bolometric luminosity or Eddington ratio. This either suggests that the radio luminosity is the key factor driving outflows or that the outflows themselves are shocking the ISM and producing synchrotron emission. We found that 98 of the sample host YSPs to varying degrees, with star formation rates (SFRs) of $0 SFR averaged over 100 Myr. We compared the gas kinematics and outflow properties to the SFRs to establish possible correlations that could suggest that the presence of the outflowing gas could be impacting SF black but we found that no such correlation exists. This leads us to the conclusion that on the scales probed by the SDSS fibre (between 2 and 7 kpc diameters), AGN-driven outflows do not impact SF on the timescales probed in this study. However, we black find a positive correlation between the light-weighted stellar ages of the QSO2s and the black hole mass black which might indicate that successive AGN episodes lead to the suppression of SF over the course of galaxy evolution.

Radio Emission and AGN Feedback in Post-starburst Galaxies

Abstract:We investigate radio-mode AGN activity among post-starburst galaxies from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to determine whether AGN feedback may be responsible for the cessation of star formation. Based on radio morphology and radio-loudness from the FIRST and NVSS data, we separate objects with radio activity due to an AGN from ongoing residual star formation. Of 513 SDSS galaxies with strong A-star spectra, 12 objects have 21-cm flux density above 1 mJy. These galaxies do not show optical AGN emission lines. Considering that the lifetime of radio emission is much shorter than the typical time-scale of the spectroscopic features of post-starburst galaxies, we conclude that the radio-emitting AGN activity in these objects was triggered after the end of the recent starburst, and thus cannot be an important feedback process to explain the post-starburst phase. The radio luminosities show a positive correlation with total galaxy stellar mass, but not with the mass of recently formed stars. Thus the mechanical power of AGN feedback derived from the radio luminosity is related to old stellar populations dominating the stellar mass, which in turn are related to the masses of central supermassive black holes.

Abstract:Several lines of argument support the existence of a link between activity at the nuclei of galaxies, in the form of an accreting supermassive black hole, and star-formation activity in these galaxies. The exact nature of this link is still under debate. Radio jets have long been argued to be an ideal mechanism that allows AGN to interact with their host galaxy and regulate star-formation. In this context, we are using a sample of radio sources in the North Ecliptic Pole (NEP) field to study the nature of the putative link between AGN activity and star-formation. This is done by means of spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting. We use the excellent spectral coverage of the AKARI infrared space telescope together with the rich ancillary data available in the NEP to build SEDs extending from UV to far-IR wavelengths. Through SED fitting we constrain both the AGN and host galaxy components. We find a significant AGN component in our sample of relatively faint radio-sources ($<$mJy), that increases in power with increasing radio-luminosity. At the highest radio-luminosities, the presence of powerful jets dominates the radio emission of these sources. A positive correlation is found between the luminosity of the AGN component and that of star-formation in the host galaxy, independent of the radio luminosity. By contrast, for a given redshift and AGN luminosity, we find that increasing radio-luminosity leads to a decrease in the specific star-formation rate. The most radio-loud AGN are found to lie on the main sequence of star-formation for their respective redshifts. For the first time, such a two-sided feedback process is seen in the same sample. We conclude that radio jets do suppress star-formation in their host galaxies but appear not to totally quench it. Our results therefore support the maintenance nature of "radio-mode" feedback from radio-AGN jets.

Abstract:We explore the role of galactic feedback on the low redshift Lyman-$\alpha$ (Ly$\alpha$)~forest ($z \lesssim 2$) statistics and its potential to alter the thermal state of the intergalactic medium. Using the Cosmology and Astrophysics with Machine Learning Simulations (CAMELS) suite, we explore variations of the AGN and stellar feedback models in the IllustrisTNG and Simba sub-grid models. We find that both AGN and stellar feedback in Simba play a role in setting the Ly$\alpha$ forest column density distribution function (CDD) and the Doppler width ($b$-value) distribution. The Simba AGN jet feedback mode is able to efficiently transport energy out to the diffuse IGM causing changes in the shape and normalization of the CDD and a broadening of the $b$-value distribution. We find that stellar feedback plays a prominent role in regulating supermassive black hole growth and feedback, highlighting the importance of constraining stellar and AGN feedback simultaneously. In IllustrisTNG, the AGN feedback variations explored in CAMELS do not affect the Ly$\alpha$ forest, but varying the stellar feedback model does produce subtle changes. Our results imply that the low-$z$ Ly$\alpha$ forest can be sensitive to changes in the ultraviolet background (UVB), stellar and black hole feedback, and that AGN jet feedback in particular can have a strong effect on the thermal state of the IGM.
