Abstract:Autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) is playing an increasingly important role in ocean science research, military application, marine and commercial development. To perform long duty operations, it needs to return to a docking station to recharge energy. This requires a forward looking sonar capable of detecting and localizing a source at an extended range (~1-2 km) with a small vertical aperture. A method of source localization by back propagating the received signal in the beam domain is proposed to find the source, e.g., the docking station. The received data is processed by conventional beamforming. Deconvolution is applied to the beam data to yield discrete narrow beams with no or low sidelobes. Simulations show that the source can be well localized. As the signal energy is range and depth dependent, adaptive adjusting the depth of an AUV based on in situ estimation of the beam angular distribution is essential to assure successful AUV docking.
