Abstract:The distributed optical fiber sensor based on Rayleigh spectral demodulation has the advantages of high linearity and capability for both dynamic and static signal sensing, but the traditional demodulation method based on cross-correlation requires a large amount of calculation. Here we propose a new demodulation method based on an artificial neural network (ANN) instead of cross-correlation operation to boost the speed in the demodulation of Rayleigh backscattering spectra, in which an ANN model is first constructed and trained to map the Rayleigh scattering pattern to the frequency of the corresponding probe laser. Then, the strain or temperature information of the fiber is figured out from the input Rayleigh scattering curve to be demodulated. In the verification experiment, the Rayleigh backscattering traces at the detection position under different probe laser frequencies are obtained using time-gated digital optical frequency domain reflectometry in which chirped pulses and matched filters are employed. It is verified that the strain applied to the fiber can be correctly demodulated by the data-treatment method based on the ANN algorithm. Compared with the demodulation method based on cross-correlation, the proposed method possesses a lower signal -noise ratio and the calculation speed increased by two orders, which ensures the realization of the fast detection of dynamic signals.
Artificial Neural Network Compensation for an Optical Fiber Temperature Sensing System Based on Optical Time Offset

Abstract:Through analyzing the optical time offset in optical fiber, the paper presented a new method that using optical fiber sensing technology for monitoring the temperature. Measurement experiments of monitoring temperature were carried out. Through the analysis of experimental data, the results indicated that the temperature variations could be detected by the optical fiber sensor based on optical time offset effectively, and the temperature sensitivity of the optical fiber sensing system is about 2.46mV/°C. Owing to the temperature sensor was affected by the variations and noises seriously, the artificial neural network (ANN) was introduced to the temperature sensor based on optical time offset as a compensation method, experimental results and numerical simulation indicated that the optical fiber temperature sensor with artificial neural network could enhance the nonlinear correction for sensor and decrease the interference effectively. Simultaneously, by way of the contrast test of the different neural networks, experimental results showed that the linearity of full scope could reach 0.11% for temperature sensor based on BRF network, and concluded the BRF network was more suitable for compensation of optical temperature sensor based on optical time offset.
Optimized Feedforward Neural Network Training for Efficient Brillouin Frequency Shift Retrieval in Fiber.

Abstract:Artificial neural networks (ANNs) can be used to replace the traditional methods in various fields, making signal processing more efficient and meeting the real-time processing requirements of the Internet of Things (IoT). Recently, as a special type of ANN, the feedforward neural network (FNN) has been used to replace the time-consuming Lorentzian curve fitting (LCF) method in Brillouin optical timedomain analysis (BOTDA) system to retrieve the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS), which could be used as the indicator in temperature/strain sensing and so on. However, the FNN needs to be re-trained if the generalization ability is not satisfactory, or the frequency scanning step is changing in the experiment. This is a cumbersome and inefficient process. In this paper, the FNN only needs to be trained once with the proposed method, and 150.62 km BOTDA is built to verify the performance of the trained FNN. The simulation and experimental results show that the proposed method is promising in BOTDA because of its high computational efficiency and wide adaptability.

Abstract:Brillouin scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors have been successfully employed in various applications in recent decades, because of benefits such as small size, light weight, electromagnetic immunity, and continuous monitoring of temperature and strain. However, the data processing requirements for the Brillouin Gain Spectrum (BGS) restrict further improvement of monitoring performance and limit the application of real-time measurements. Studies using Feedforward Neural Network (FNN) to measure Brillouin Frequency Shift (BFS) have been performed in recent years to validate the possibility of improving measurement performance. In this work, a novel FNN that is 3 times faster than previous FNNs is proposed to improve BFS measurement performance. More specifically, after the original Brillouin Gain Spectrum (BGS) is preprocessed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA), the data are fed into the Feedforward Neural Network (FNN) to predict BFS.

Abstract:Optical neural networks have long cast attention nowadays. Like other optical structured neural networks, fiber neural networks which utilize the mechanism of light transmission to compute can take great advantages in both computing efficiency and power cost. Though the potential ability of optical fiber was demonstrated via the establishing of fiber neural networks, it will be of great significance of combining both fiber transmission and computing functions so as to cater the needs of future beyond 5G intelligent communication signal processing. Thus, in this letter, the fiber neural networks and their related optical signal processing methods will be both developed. In this way, information derived from the transmitted signals can be directly processed in the optical domain rather than being converted to the electronic domain. As a result, both prominent gains in processing efficiency and power cost can be further obtained. The fidelity of the whole structure and related methods is demonstrated by the task of modulation format recognition which plays important role in fiber optical communications without losing the generality.

Abstract:Abstract As the foundation of communication networks, optical fiber carries huge network traffic, so the prediction of fiber optic cable faults is an important guarantee for the operation of communication networks. Based on the combination of fiber optic system networking technology and network management data, this study constructs an alarm correlation analysis method by using data mining technology to obtain the data set of the fault prediction model for the problem of low fault prediction accuracy of traditional communication networks. The dataset is used to balance the sample data by generating a small number of new samples through the generative adversarial network. The memory-based feature generation convolutional network is proposed to enhance the feature interaction to realize fault prediction in communication networks. The prediction model has a high prediction accuracy of 98.68%, which saves about 160 min for repair work through the application of fiber optic cable fault prediction, which compares well with other models. Fault prediction based on neural networks can provide assistance in the operation and maintenance of distribution communication networks.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a collection of machine learning assisted distributed fiber optic sensors (DFOS) for applications in the field of infrastructure monitoring. We employ advanced signal processing based on artificial neural networks (ANNs) to enhance the performance of the dynamic DFOS for strain and vibration sensing. Specifically, ANNs in comparison to conventional and computationally expensive correlation and linearization algorithms, deliver lower strain errors and speed up the signal processing allowing real time strain monitoring. Furthermore, convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are used to denoise the dynamic DFOS signal and enable useable sensing lengths of up to 100 km. Applications of the machine learning assisted dynamic DFOS in road traffic and railway infrastructure monitoring are demonstrated. In the field of static DFOS, machine learning is applied to the well-known Brillouin optical frequency domain analysis (BOFDA) system. Specifically, CNN are shown to be very tolerant against noisy spectra and contribute towards significantly shorter measurement times. Furthermore, different machine learning algorithms (linear and polynomial regression, decision trees, ANNs) are applied to solve the well-known problem of cross-sensitivity in cases when temperature and humidity are measured simultaneously. The presented machine learning assisted DFOS can potentially contribute towards enhanced, cost effective and reliable monitoring of infrastructures.

Abstract:For high symbol rate fiber optic networks, the estimation and monitoring of time varying link performance parameters are critical for delivering optimal network performance. In this paper, a method is presented for estimating the nonlinear signal-to-noise ratio ${\text{(SNR}}_{{\text{nl}}})$ using an artificial neural network (ANN). The ANN is trained with the fiber nonlinearity induced amplitude noise covariance and phase noise correlation extracted from received symbols. The data used for training are simulation results for a 34.5 Gbaud dual polarization 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation signal transmitted over a wide range of link configurations with varying fiber types and number of wavelength division multiplexed channels. Using 734 input-output sets, high accuracy is demonstrated for training, testing, and validation for simulation data with a maximum normalized root-mean-square error of 0.37% for ${\text{SNR}}_{{\text{nl}}}$. Validation using experimental data exhibits less than 0.25 dB deviation from the true ${\text{SNR}}_{{\text{nl}}}$ for estimates obtained with varying fiber length and launch power.

Abstract:Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) that operates over a long sensing fiber is prone to be affected by the detrimental non-local effects (NLE); since NLE can distort Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS), therefore correctly retrieving Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) is very challenging. Recently, the basic artificial neural networks (B-ANN) has been demonstrated to retrieve BFS effectively, in the case that a distortion-free BGS can be obtained. However, in the more general cases with NLE, a neural network for retrieving BFS in BOTDA data has not been proposed. In this paper, firstly the physical origin of NLE is analyzed theoretically and experimentally in detail. Then a specific ANN (NLE-ANN) is proposed to deal with the BOTDA data affected by NLE for the first time. The experimental verifications show that with the cooperative implementation of NLE-ANN and B-ANN, the effective retrieval of BFS along the whole fiber can be achieved, even though the BGS has been affected by NLE. This work proposes a promising approach in traditional BOTDA, because the upper limit of probe power could be raised by artificial intelligence to boost the sensing performance.

Abstract:Hardware implementation of artificial neural networks facilitates real-time parallel processing of massive data sets. Optical neural networks offer low-volume 3D connectivity together with large bandwidth and minimal heat production in contrast to electronic implementation. Here, we present a conceptual design for in-fiber optical neural networks. Neurons and synapses are realized as individual silica cores in a multi-core fiber. Optical signals are transferred transversely between cores by means of optical coupling. Pump driven amplification in erbium-doped cores mimics synaptic interactions. We simulated three-layered feed-forward neural networks and explored their capabilities. Simulations suggest that networks can differentiate between given inputs depending on specific configurations of amplification; this implies classification and learning capabilities. Finally, we tested experimentally our basic neuronal elements using fibers, couplers, and amplifiers, and demonstrated that this configuration implements a neuron-like function. Therefore, devices similar to our proposed multi-core fiber could potentially serve as building blocks for future large-scale small-volume optical artificial neural networks.

Abstract:In this paper, we put forward a data-driven fiber model based on the deep neural network with multi-head attention mechanism. This model, which predicts signal evolution through fiber transmission in optical fiber telecommunications, can have advantages in computation time without losing much accuracy compared with conventional split-step fourier method (SSFM). In contrast with other neural network based models, this model obtains a relatively good balance between prediction accuracy and distance generalization especially in cases where higher bit rate and more complicated modulation formats are adopted. By numerically demonstration, this model can have ability of predicting up to 16-QAM 160Gbps signals with any transmission distances ranging from 0 to 100 km under both circumstances of the signals without or with the noise.

Abstract:The development of advanced distributed optical fiber sensing systems that are capable of performing accurate and spatially resolved multiparameter measurements is of great interest to a wide range of scientific and industrial applications. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a wavelength diversity based advanced distributed optical fiber sensor system to accomplish multiparameter sensing while greatly enhancing measurement accuracy. A suite of deep neural network (DNN) algorithms are developed and verified for data denoising, rapid Brillouin frequency shift estimation, and vibration data event classification. As a proof-of-concept, we demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed advanced wavelength diversity distributed fiber sensor system assisted by DNN for simultaneous, independent measurements of static strain, temperature, and acoustic vibrations over a 25 km long sensing fiber at 3 m spatial resolution. These results suggest the potential for an intelligent multiparameter monitoring system with enhanced performance in advanced structural health monitoring applications.

Abstract:In this work two Neural Network (NN) based solutions are proposed to recover the distributed temperature profile of a sensing fiber, measured using a commercial Brillouin Optical Time-Domain Analysis (BOTDA) interrogator. A detailed analysis in terms of temperature accuracy and processing speed is carried out for both the proposed methods, comparing the results with the ones obtained from the application of classical fitting techniques, namely cross-correlation (CORR), Lorentzian fitting (LF) and Pseudo-Voigt fitting (PV), through both simulations and real measurements carried out in laboratory environment. The results show that the first NN implementation, which aims to maximize the accuracy of the temperature profile and the processing speed, can handle different width of frequency acquisition window but needs to be optimized for a specific frequency acquisition scanning step. The second NN implementation, however, can also handle different values of the acquisition scanning step with a minor performance drop. Simulations and experimental data show a massive advantage of NN implementations in terms of processing speed with respect to classical fitting techniques, with a slightly better accuracy of the estimated temperature profiles.

Abstract:FBG array sensors have been widely used in the multi-point monitoring of large structures due to their excellent optical multiplexing capability. This paper proposes a cost-effective demodulation system for FBG array sensors based on a Neural Network (NN). The stress variations applied to the FBG array sensor are encoded by the array waveguide grating (AWG) as transmitted intensities under different channels and fed to an end-to-end NN model, which receives them and simultaneously establishes a complex nonlinear relationship between the transmitted intensity and the actual wavelength to achieve absolute interrogation of the peak wavelength. In addition, a low-cost data augmentation strategy is introduced to break the data size bottleneck common in data-driven methods so that the NN can still achieve superior performance with small-scale data. In summary, the demodulation system provides an efficient and reliable solution for multi-point monitoring of large structures based on FBG array sensors.

Abstract:Fiber optic sensors that utilize backscattered light offer distributed real-time measurements and have been seen tremendous improvements in sensing distance and spatial resolution over the last decades. However, these improvements in sensor capabilities lead to a significant increase in the amount of data that needs to be processed. Traditional processing schemes are no longer adequate, so the development of novel signal processing methods is critical. Phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) is now applied in various applications for multi-event recognition, and it would usually be difficult, sometimes even unrealistic to label all the acquired samples due to its real-time and seamless monitoring nature. To fully take advantage of the information contained within the large number of unlabeled samples, which were formerly not utilized and hence wasted, we propose a semi-supervised model to boost the event classification performance of Φ-OTDR. The model extracts respectively the temporal features and the spatial bidirectional features together with a dual attention mechanism. Its classification accuracy has been improved up to 96.9% with only 1230 labeled samples. In addition, our model shows significant advantages when the number of labeled samples is reduced. Importantly, our method improves the accuracy of multi-event classification without any modification to the optical setup.

Abstract:We study the artificial neural network (ANN) and feed forward equalizer jointly to mitigate the inter symbol interference (ISI) and the nonlinear distortions in the optical single-side band and direct-detection (DD) system. The optical SSB signal is generated by a relatively low-cost dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator (DDMZM). The two driving signals are a pair of Hilbert signals with Nyquist pulse-shaped four-level pulse amplitude modulation (NPAM-4). In this paper, we experimentally compare the performance of feed forward equalizer (FFE) with BP (back propagation) network combined with FFE. The experimental results show that the performance of BP network with FFE equalizer outperforms FFE equalizer, because it can efficiently mitigate the nonlinear distortions. We have experimentally demonstrated that a 40 Gb/s NPAM-4 signal transmit over 80 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) without any inline dispersion compensation.

Abstract:Abstract Distributed optical fibre sensors deliver a map of a physical quantity along an optical fibre, providing a unique solution for health monitoring of targeted structures. Considerable developments over recent years have pushed conventional distributed sensors towards their ultimate performance, while any significant improvement demands a substantial hardware overhead. Here, a technique is proposed, encoding the interrogating light signal by a single-sequence aperiodic code and spatially resolving the fibre information through a fast post-processing. The code sequence is once forever computed by a specifically developed genetic algorithm, enabling a performance enhancement using an unmodified conventional configuration for the sensor. The proposed approach is experimentally demonstrated in Brillouin and Raman based sensors, both outperforming the state-of-the-art. This methodological breakthrough can be readily implemented in existing instruments by only modifying the software, offering a simple and cost-effective upgrade towards higher performance for distributed fibre sensing.
