Abstract:In recent years, deep-blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) based on ultra-small CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) have attracted increased attention. However, ultra-small CsPbBr3 QDs tend to have more defects and more nonradiative processes because of their ultrafast nucleation and growth rates. How to suppress the nucleation and growth rate is an important issue for developing deep-blue emitting CsPbBr3 QDs with high performance. Herein, a modified hot-injection method (MM) is designed for suppressing the growth process of CsPbBr3. The ligands of oleic acid (OA) and oleylamine (OAm) are employed instead of octadecene (ODE) as the solution, and as a result, the strong confined and high-quality CsPbBr3 QDs (∼4.45 nm) are obtained, presenting strong deep-blue emission (≈465 nm) with a photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) of 95%, an average lifetime of 8.84 ns, and a large exciton binding energy of 268.7 meV, which can maintain blue emission over 30 days under atmospheric conditions. Compared with the CsPbBr3 nanocubes (NCs) obtained by the common hot-injection method (CM), the CsPbBr3 QDs obtained by MM have fewer defects and trap states, resulting in less nonradiative processes. In addition, the fabricated PeLEDs based on the above CsPbBr3 QDs show deep-blue emission with Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) color coordinates of (0.129 and 0.074), which is better than the blue standard of the National Television Standards Committee (NTSC). Evidently, this work provides a way to synthesize ultra-small CsPbBr3 QDs and also reflects the important influence of the reaction solvent on perovskite synthesis.
High Color-Purity and Efficient Pure-Blue Perovskite Light-Emitting Diodes Based on Strongly Confined Monodispersed Quantum Dots

Abstract:Here, we develop an in situ photoluminescence (PL) system to monitor the nucleation and growth of perovskite nanocrystals and control the monomer supply rate to achieve strongly confined and monodispersed quantum dots (QDs) with average size of 3.4 nm. Pure-blue (460 nm wavelength) CsPbBr3 QDs with near unity PL quantum yield and narrow size distribution (small size dispersion of 9.6%) were thus produced. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) based on these QDs were prepared by using an all-solution processing route, which showed narrow electroluminescence with full width at half-maximum of 20 nm and a high color purity of 97.3%. The device also had a high external quantum efficiency of 10.1%, maximum luminance of 11 610 cd m-2, and continuous operation lifetime of 21 h at the initial luminance of 102 cd m-2, corresponding to the state-of-art for pure-blue perovskite LEDs.

Abstract:Recently, tuning the green emission of CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) to blue through quantum size and confinement effects has received considerable attention due to its remarkable photophysical properties. However, the synthesis of such a blue-emitting QD has been challenging. Herein, supersaturated recrystallization was successfully implemented at room temperature to synthesize a broadband blue-emitting ZnBr2-doped CsPbBr3 QD with an average size of ~3 nm covering the blue spectrum. The structural and optical properties of CsPbBr3 QDs demonstrated that QD particle size may decrease by accommodating ZnBr2 dopants into the perovskite precursor solution. Energy-dispersive spectroscopy confirmed the presence of zinc ions with the QDs. This work provides a new strategy for synthesizing strongly quantum-confined QD materials for photonic devices such as light-emitting diodes and lighting.

Abstract:We report a colloidal synthesis of blue emissive, stable cube-shaped CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) in the strong quantum confinement regime via a dissolution-recrystallization starting from pre-synthesized (KxCs1-x)4PbBr6 nanocrystals which are then reacted with PbBr2. This is markedly different from the known case of Cs4PbBr6 nanocrystals that react within seconds with PbBr2 and get transformed into much larger, green emitting CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. Here, instead, the conversion of (KxCs1-x)4PbBr6 nanocrystals to CsPbBr3 QDs occurs in a time span of hours, and tuning of the QDs size is achieved by adjusting the concentration of precursors. The QDs exhibit excitonic features in optical absorption that are tunable in the 420 - 452 nm range, accompanied by blue photoluminescence with quantum yield around 60%. Detailed spectroscopic investigations in both the single and multi-exciton regime reveal the exciton fine structure and the effect of Auger recombination of these CsPbBr3 QDs, confirming theoretical predictions for this system.

Abstract:Colloidal all-inorganic perovskite CsPbBr3 nanocrystals present versatile outstanding optoelectronic properties as well as greatly improved stability when compared with their hybrid analogues. However, the performance of blue-emitting CsPbBr3 nanocrystals is still inferior to their green counterpart. Moreover, their synthesis generally demands a high temperature and inert gas environment. Synthesis of perovskite nanocrystals with high efficiency blue emission in air ambience is highly desired. In this work we demonstrate a top-down strategy for the facile synthesis of blue-emitting CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) in ambient air through cutting CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets (NPLs) into spherical QDs with the assistance of ultrasonication and hydrobromic acid (HBr) treatment. The CsPbBr3 QDs show excellent monodispersion with an average size of about 5 nm and a blue emission at 460 nm with high photoluminescence quantum yield (PL QY) of 53.2%. The key role of HBr is suggested to solubilize the inorganic cores of the NPLs and repair the surface. The CsPbBr3 QDs are used to prepare mixed phosphors emitting high quality white light.
Cryogenic‐Temperature Thermodynamically Suppressed and Strongly Confined CsPbBr 3 Quantum Dots for Deeply Blue Light‐Emitting Diodes

Abstract:Suppressing the naturally ultrafast nucleation and growth rates of perovskite nanocrystals is a big challenge to develop high-performance deeply blue perovskite light-emitting diodes. Here, a cryogenic temperature thermodynamically suppressed synthetic strategy using liquid nitrogen is designed to obtain ultrasmall CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs; ≈3 nm). Due to its strong confinement effect, the as-obtained CsPbBr3 QDs present strong deeply blue emission (≈460 nm) with a high quantum yield value of up to 98%, a large exciton binding energy of 301.6 meV, and excellent spectra stability for 60 d under atmosphere environment. This unprecedented regime indicates that cryogenic temperature can eliminate pre-existing trap states and suppress the nonradiative process. Besides, the resultant perovskite light-emitting diodes based on ultrasmall CsPbBr3 QDs show deeply blue emission (≈ 460 nm) with a Commission Internationale de l'Eclairage (CIE) color coordinate of (0.145, 0.054), better than the blue National Television Standards Committee (NTSC) standard. Evidently, this cryogenic temperature synthetic strategy will pave the way for the large-scale synthesis of the strongly confined ultrasmall quantum dots systems and open the door for the development of next generation solid-state lighting and displays.

Abstract:This work proposes a new method for synthesizing ultrasmall CsPbBr3 quantum dots with precise size control. These QDs exhibit stable photoluminescence and low trap density, particularly in the deep blue spectral region. QD‐LEDs made from these materials achieve an external quantum efficiency of 1.0% at 459 nm. This study demonstrates a new strategy for building stable and efficient blue QD‐LEDs. Despite recent advances, it is still difficult to fabricate deep blue‐emitting perovskite light‐emitting diodes (LEDs) that are immune to the color instability caused by halide mixing. This is largely because it is still challenging to achieve bright, stable, pure bromide perovskite materials with deep blue emission. Here, a novel strategy is reported for synthesizing ultrasmall CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) under ambient conditions. Precise size control is used to tune the peak emission wavelengths, via the confinement effect, from 433 to 501 nm. These ultrasmall QDs, with sizes of 2–6 nm, exhibit ultralow trap density and stable photoluminescence quantum yields up to 94%, particularly in the deep blue spectral region (440–465 nm). QD‐LEDs fabricated with these materials achieve an external quantum efficiency of 1.0% at 459 nm. The exceptional control of the emission properties demonstrated here suggests a new strategy for building stable, efficient blue QD‐LEDs.

Abstract:Perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) with an external quantum efficiency exceeding 20% have been achieved in both green and red wavelengths 1,2,3,4,5 ; however, the performance of blue-emitting PeLEDs lags behind 6,7 . Ultrasmall CsPbBr 3 quantum dots are promising candidates with which to realize efficient and stable blue PeLEDs, although it has proven challenging to synthesize a monodispersed population of ultrasmall CsPbBr 3 quantum dots, and difficult to retain their solution-phase properties when casting into solid films 8 . Here we report the direct synthesis-on-substrate of films of suitably coupled, monodispersed, ultrasmall perovskite QDs. We develop ligand structures that enable control over the quantum dots' size, monodispersity and coupling during film-based synthesis. A head group (the side with higher electrostatic potential) on the ligand provides steric hindrance that suppresses the formation of layered perovskites. The tail (the side with lower electrostatic potential) is modified using halide substitution to increase the surface binding affinity, constraining resulting grains to sizes within the quantum confinement regime. The approach achieves high monodispersity (full-width at half-maximum = 23 nm with emission centred at 478 nm) united with strong coupling. We report as a result blue PeLEDs with an external quantum efficiency of 18% at 480 nm and 10% at 465 nm, to our knowledge the highest reported among perovskite blue LEDs by a factor of 1.5 and 2, respectively 6,7 .

Spontaneous Formation of Lead‐Free Cs3Cu2I5 Quantum Dots in Metal–Organic‐Frameworks with Deep‐Blue Emission

Abstract:Ultrasmall lead‐free copper‐based Cs3Cu2I5 quantum dots (QDs) with a deep‐blue emission are synthesized through metal–organic‐framework confined growth method at room temperature. The obtained Cs3Cu2I5 QDs film shows excellent stability for 1440 h in a high humidity environment (relative humidity over 70%) without any encapsulation due to the protection of the MOF‐74 matrix against the external environment. All‐inorganic lead‐free Cs3Cu2I5 perovskite‐derivant quantum dots (QDs) have attracted tremendous attention due to their nontoxicity and unique optoelectronic properties. However, the traditional hot‐injection method requires high temperatures and multiple ligands to confine the growth of QDs. Herein, a strategy is reported to spontaneously synthesize ultrasmall Cs3Cu2I5 QDs within metal–organic‐frameworks (MOFs) MOF‐74 at room temperature (RT) with an average diameter of 4.33 nm. The obtained Cs3Cu2I5 QDs exhibit an evident deep‐blue emission with Commission Internationale de L'Eclairage coordinates of (0.17, 0.07), owing to the strong quantum confinement effect. Due to the protection of MOF‐74, the Cs3Cu2I5 QDs demonstrate superior stability, and the photoluminescence quantum yield retains 89% of the initial value after the storage of 1440 h under the environment with relative humidity exceeding 70%. Besides, triplet–triplet annihilation upconversion emission is observed within the composite of Cs3Cu2I5@MOF‐74, which brings out apparent temperature‐dependent photoluminescence. This study reveals a facile method for fabricating ultrasmall lead‐free perovskite‐derivant QDs at RT without multiple ligands. Besides, the temperature‐dependent photoluminescence of Cs3Cu2I5@MOF‐74 may open up a new way to develop the applications of temperature sensors or other related optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Lead halide perovskite nanocrystals are highly valued in optoelectronics for their high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) and tunable bandgap. However, producing blue-emitting CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) with high PLQY, narrow emission bandgap (<30 nm), and size-tunable energy bandgap is still challenging. Herein, we developed a microfluidic chip strategy to achieve a controllable, continuous, and stable synthesis of CsPbBr3 QDs, optimizing multidimensional parameters such as precursor solution concentration, reaction time, temperature, and the Cs/Pb mole precursor ratio to enhance the properties of the synthetic material. The blue-emitting CsPbBr3 QDs with sharp emission wavelength at 472 nm can be resulted and the PLQY value reach up to 41.9%, which is at the highest level of synthesizing blue-emitting CsPbBr3 QDs using microfluidic chip method. Notably, this strategy enables the synthesis of CsPbBr3 QDs with an emission spectrum ranging from blue to green (463 nm to 517 nm). This work elucidates the synthetic kinetics of perovskite QDs via the microfluidic reaction and highlights microfluidics as a promising technique for scalable, high-quality nanocrystal fabrication.

Abstract:The development of pure-blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) faces challenges of spectral stability and low external quantum efficiency (EQE) due to phase separation in mixed halide compositions. Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) with strong confinement effects are promising alternatives to achieve high-quality pure-blue PeLEDs, yet their performance is often hindered by the poor size distribution and high trap density. A strategy combining thermodynamic control with a polishing-driven ligand exchange process to produce high-quality QDs is developed. The strongly-confined pure-blue (≈470 nm) CsPbBr3 QDs exhibit narrow size distribution (12% dispersion) and are achieved in Br-rich ion environment based on growth thermodynamic control. Subsequent polishing-driven ligand exchange process removes imperfect surface sites and replaces initial long-chain organic ligands with short-chain benzene ligands. The resulting QDs exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) to near-unity. The resulting PeLEDs exhibit a pure-blue electroluminescence (EL) emission at 472 nm with narrow full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 25 nm, achieving a maximum EQE of 10.7% and a bright maximum luminance of 7697 cd m-2. The pure-blue PeLEDs show ultrahigh spectral stability under high voltage, a low roll-off of EQE, and an operational half-lifetime (T50) of 127 min at an initial luminance of 103 cd m-2 under continuous operation.

Abstract:Discretely sized semiconductor clusters have attracted considerable attention due to their intriguing optical properties and self-assembly behaviors. While lead halide perovskite nanostructures have been recently intensively explored, few studies have addressed perovskite clusters and their self-assembled superstructures. Here, we report the room-temperature synthesis of sub-2 nm CsPbBr3 clusters and present strong evidence that these ultrasmall perovskite species, obtained under a wide range of reaction conditions, possess a specific size, with optical properties and self-assembly characteristics resembling those of well-known II-VI semiconductor magic-sized clusters. Unlike conventional CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, the as-synthesized CsPbBr3 nanoclusters spontaneously self-assemble into a hexagonally packed columnar mesophase in solution, which can be further converted to single-crystalline CsPbBr3 quantum nanoribbons with bright deep-blue emission at room temperature. Such a conversion of CsPbBr3 nanoclusters to nanoribbons is found to be driven by a ligand-destabilization-induced crystallization and mesophase transition process. Our study will facilitate the investigation of perovskite nanoclusters and offer new possibilities in the low-temperature synthesis of anisotropic perovskite nanostructures.
A novel in-situ process for high performance blue CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots via Cs ion-exchange in Sodium Titanium Silicate

Abstract:Inorganic perovskite quantum dots (QDs) have attracted extensive attention from researchers in recent years, because of their good prospects in micro-LED for next generation lighting and display. However, the research on high quality and stable inorganic perovskite blue QDs is relatively backward, which limits its further applications in micro-LED. In the present work, crystalline silicotitanate (CST) is used as matrix and synthesized by hydrothermal method, then, Cs+ ion replaces Na+ ion in the tunnel in c-axis dimension of CST matrix by ion exchange, and finally, the CsPbBr3 QDs are in situ anchored on the Cs+ ion in the tunnel. The sizes of the as prepared CsPbBr3 QDs are determined to be mostly less than 4 nm, which guarantees the as prepared CST: CsPbBr3 QDs to have a brilliant blue emission peak at 463 nm with a narrow FWHM of less than 20nm, and it can be excited by a broad n-UV light range from 300-400 nm and peak at 365nm. A photoluminescent quantum yield of 88.34% is achieved. Furthermore, the as prepared CST: CsPbBr3 QDs is demonstrated to have a good air and thermal stability with an average PL lifetime of 112.00 ns. The color gamut of CST: CsPbBr3 QDS together with the commercial green (Sr, Ba)2SiO4: Eu2+ and red (Sr, Ca)AlSiN3: Eu2+ phosphors is calculated to be 114.12% of the NTSC standard. Therefore, the present pure blue CST: CsPbBr3 QDs can be a potential backlight source for display devices.

Abstract:In this study, blue‐emitting rhombic dodecahedron CsPbBr3 quantum dots with a photoluminescence quantum yield ≈90% are obtained through a sequential post‐treatments strategy, which realizes morphology regulation of quantum dots from nanoplate to cube and then to dodecahedron. The target perovskite light‐emitting diodes gain an external quantum efficiency of 6.6% (480 nm) and an extremely stable electroluminescence spectrum. CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) prepared through traditional hot‐injection and room temperature reprecipitation methods are usually hexahedral (nanoplate/cube) and green‐emitting. These methods severely obstruct the development of blue perovskite‐based light‐emitting diodes (PeLEDs) because the resultant QDs always suffer unachievable morphology regulation. Here, highly efficient blue‐emitting rhombic dodecahedron CsPbBr3 QDs (CsPbBr3 QDs) are obtained by regulating morphological transformation for the first time through a novel and facile sequential post‐treatment strategy. Hydrobromide (‐NH3+) with stronger adsorption energy promotes the morphology transform of QDs from nanoplate to cube by substituting oleylamine in the first step. Then, polar solvent vapor eliminates PbX64− and led to the (112) crystal plane of the cube QDs being exposed, which is effectively stabilized by ‐NH3+ to realize morphology transition from cube to the dodecahedron. Highly efficient 12‐faceted dodecahedrons are endowed with significantly enhanced photoluminescence quantum yield of 89.8% at 476 nm as well as uniform size distribution and mono‐dispersity. The target blue PeLEDs achieve the maximum external quantum efficiency of 6.6% (480 nm) and excellent spectrum stability. This study provides a new strategy to prepare blue‐emitting CsPbBr3 QDs by delicate control toward the growth and polyhedron process of crystal.

Abstract:Ultrasmall CsPbBr3 perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) as promising blue-emitting materials are highly desired for full-color display and lighting applications, but their inferior efficiency and poor ambient stability hinder extensive applications. Herein, a "break-and-repair" strategy has been developed to tightly confine monodispersed ultrasmall CsPbBr3 PQDs in zeolite. In this strategy, the CsPbBr3 PQDs are introduced into zeolite via high temperature evaporation method, wherein the perovskite precursors break the zeolite framework, and amino acids and silane are then used to fix the damaged framework and lock the perovskite QDs within matrix. By modulating the synthetic condition to control the growth of CsPbBr3, PQDs with ultrasmall size of 2 nm have been obtained in zeolite, giving the emission centered at 460 nm with a high quantum yield of 76.93%. Strikingly, the PQDs@zeolite composite exhibits water-induced reversible photoluminescence promoted by the coordination between amino acids and PQDs in dynamic, achieving enhanced water stability (14 days in aqueous solution). This work provides a new perspective for the synthesis of water-stable blue-emitting perovskite composites for potential application in lighting fields.

Abstract:High-performance blue perovskite quantum dots (PQDs) are of key importance for electroluminescent light-emitting diodes (LEDs) toward full color display in the future. Here, mixed halogen PQDs CsPb(Br x /Cl1–x )3 with a tunable emission wavelength was obtained through a strategy of ligand-assisted anion exchange assisted by didodecydimethyammonium chloride (DDAC) ligand. Surface Br– vacancies of the PQD are passivated by the halogen atoms in the anchored DDAC ligand, enabling a high efficiency emission of blue light from the PQD. Stable anchoring of the ligand also improves the robustness of the PQD during its purification in weak polar solvents. Well-controlled chlorine stoichiometry of the PQD also allows fine-tuning of its photoluminescence and electroluminescence spectra in the range of 424–514 nm and 453–500 nm. The external quantum efficiency of the fabricated PQDs LED device reaches 10.1% at 495 nm, 6.5% at 484 nm, and 5.1% at 470 nm (NTSC pure blue) under a constant current test. Our work provides a facile method without additional purification or ligand separation to achieve highly efficient blue PQDs with a tunable emission wavelength, promoting the advance of blue PQDs LED.

Abstract:Abstract Metal halide perovskites have emerged as promising candidates for solution-processed blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs). However, halide phase segregation – and the resultant spectral shift – at LED operating voltages hinders their application. Here we report true-blue LEDs employing quasi-two-dimensional cesium lead bromide with a narrow size distribution of quantum wells, achieved through the incorporation of a chelating additive. Ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy measurements reveal that the chelating agent helps to control the quantum well thickness distribution. Density functional theory calculations show that the chelating molecule destabilizes the lead species on the quantum well surface and that this in turn suppresses the growth of thicker quantum wells. Treatment with γ-aminobutyric acid passivates electronic traps and enables films to withstand 100 °C for 24 h without changes to their emission spectrum. LEDs incorporating γ-aminobutyric acid-treated perovskites exhibit blue emission with Commission Internationale de l'Éclairage coordinates of (0.12, 0.14) at an external quantum efficiency of 6.3%.

Abstract:Novel lead-free non-perovskite blue-emitting cesium bromine (CsBr) QDs have been prepared using a ligand-assisted re-precipitation method. A high photoluminescence quantum yield of over 92.0% makes the CsBr QDs an efficient color-conversion candidate for fabricating white-light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:In this paper, high quality green-emitting CsPbBr3 quantum dots (QDs) are successfully synthesized by hot-injection method. Different injection temperatures are tested to optimize the synthesis conditions. High brightness with the photoluminescence (PL) quantum yields (QYs) up to 90% and narrow size-distribution with the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 18.5 nm are obtained under the optimized conditions. Green light emitting diodes (LEDs) based on the CsPbBr3 QDs are successfully demonstrated by combining solution method with vapor deposition method. Composite films of poly[9,9-dioctylfluorene-co- N-[4-(3-methylpropyl)]-diphenylamine] (TFB) and bathocuproine (BCP) layers are chosen as the hole-transporting and the electron-transporting layers, respectively. The highly bright green QD-based light-emitting devices (QLEDs) showing maximum luminance up to 46,000 cd/m2 with a low turn on voltage of 2.3 V, and peak external quantum efficiency (EQE) of 5.7%, corresponding to 19.9 cd/A in luminance efficiency. These devices also show high color purity for electroluminescence (EL) with FWHM <20 nm, and no redshift and broadening with increasing voltage as well as a spectral match between PL and EL.
