Abstract:In this paper, we give a complete characterization for the essential normality of quasi-homogenous quotient modules of the Hardy modules $$H^2 \left( {\mathbb{D}^2 } \right)$$. Also, we show that if d ≥ 3, then all the principle homogenous quotient modules of $$H^2 \left( {\mathbb{D}^d } \right)$$ are not essentially normal.

Abstract:The Arveson-Douglas Conjecture is a conjecture about essential normality of submodules, and quotient modules of some analytic Hilbert modules on polynomial rings. It originated from multi-variable operator theory but turns out to have various connections outside this field. In this survey, we will introduce the conjecture, describe its backgrounds, applications, and recent developments. Several related questions are also included in this survey.
Essential normality of quotient modules vs. Hilbert-Schmidtness of submodules in $H^2(\mathbb D^2)$

Abstract:In the present paper, we prove that all the quotient modules in $H^2(\mathbb D^2)$, associated to the finitely generated submodules containing a distinguished homogenous polynomial, are essentially normal, which is the first result on the essential normality of non-algebraic quotient modules in $H^2(\mathbb D^2)$. Moreover, we obtain the equivalence of the essential normality of a quotient module and the Hilbert-Schmidtness of its associated submodule in $H^2(\mathbb D^2)$, in the case that the submodule contains a distinguished homogenous polynomial. As an application, we prove that each finitely generated submodule containing a polynomial is Hilbert-Schmidt, which partially gives an affirmative answer to the conjecture of Yang \cite{Ya3}.

Abstract:The normal cohomology functor Ext(N) is introduced from the category of all normal Hilbert modules over the ball algebra to the category of A(B)-modules. From the calculation of Ext(N)-groups, we show that every normal C(partial derivative B)-extension of a normal Hilbert module (viewed as a Hilbert module over A(B)) is normal projective and normal injective. It follows that there is a natural isomorphism between Hom of normal Shilov modules and that of their quotient modules, which is a new lifting theorem of normal Shilov modules. Finally, these results are applied to the discussion of rigidity and extensions of Hardy submodules over the ball algebra.

Abstract:Guo and the second author have shown that the closure [I] in the Drury–Arveson space of a homogeneous principal ideal I in C[z1,…,zn] is essentially normal. In this note, the authors extend this result to the closure of any principal polynomial ideal in the Bergman space. In particular, the commutators and cross-commutators of the restrictions of the multiplication operators are shown to be in the Schatten p-class for p>n. The same is true for modules generated by polynomials with vector-valued coefficients. Further, the maximal ideal space XI of the resulting C⁎-algebra for the quotient module is shown to be contained in Z(I)∩∂Bn, where Z(I) is the zero variety for I, and to contain all points in ∂Bn that are limit points of Z(I)∩Bn. Finally, the techniques introduced enable one to study a certain class of weight Bergman spaces on the ball.

Abstract:In this article, we introduce a class of generalized matrix algebras, in which each algebra is called a normally upper triangular gm algebra, and characterise Gorenstein projective modules over this class of algebras. Moreover, a sufficient condition of strongly Gorenstein projective modules over normally upper triangular gm algebras is given. The importance of normally upper triangular gm algebras for us is that it includes the so-called path algebras of quivers over algebras and generalized path algebras. Due to this, we characterize Gorenstein projective modules and strongly Gorenstein projective modules over path algebras of quivers over algebras and generalized path algebras as applications of the main results on normally upper triangular gm algebras. At last, we give an example to show how all indecomposable Gorenstein projective modules over a given algebra are constructed by the result on generalized path algebras.

Abstract: Given a *-homomorphism $\sigma: C(M)\to \mathscr{L}(\mathcal{H})$ on a Hilbert space $\mathcal{H}$ for a compact metric space $M$, a projection $P$ onto a subspace $\mathcal{P}$ in $\mathcal{H}$ is said to be essentially normal relative to $\sigma$ if $[\sigma(\varphi),P]\in \mathcal{K}$ for $\varphi\in C(M)$, where $\mathcal{K}$ is the ideal of compact operators on $\mathcal{H}$. In this note we consider two notions of span for essentially normal projections $P$ and $Q$, and investigate when they are also essentially normal. First, we show the representation theorem for two projections, and relate these results to Arveson's conjecture for the closure of homogenous polynomial ideals on the Drury-Arveson space. Finally, we consider the relation between the relative position of two essentially normal projections and the $K$ homology elements defined for them.

Abstract:In this paper, we develop some new techniques to prove the essential normality of Drury-Arveson's quasi-homogeneous principal submodules, by a combination with the approach of Douglas and Wang. As a consequence, we prove that each quasi-homogeneous submodule of is essentially normal for dimensions n = 2, 3, and determine the related K-homology.

Abstract:We investigate the $p$-essential normality of Hilbert quotient submodules on a relatively compact smooth strongly pseudoconvex domain in a complex manifold satisfying Property (S). For analytic subvarieties that have compact singularities and transversely intersect the strongly pseudoconvex boundary, we prove that the corresponding Bergman-Sobolev quotient submodules are $p$-essentially normal whenever $p$ exceeds the dimension of the noncompact part of the analytic subvarieties. As a consequence, we partially confirm the geometric Arveson-Douglas Conjecture and resolve an open problem regarding the trace-class antisymmetric sum of truncated Toeplitz operators within a broader context. Moreover, we provide applications in $K$-homology and geometric invariant theory.

Abstract:Many Hilbert modules over the polynomial ring in m variables are essentially reductive, that is, have commutators which are compact. Arveson has raised the question of whether the closure of homogeneous ideals inherit this property and provided motivation to seek an affirmative answer. Positive results have been obtained by Arveson, Guo, Wang and the author. More recently, Guo and Wang extended the results to quasi-homogeneous ideals in two variables. Building on their techniques, in this note the author extends this result to Hilbert modules over certain Reinhardt domains such as ellipsoids in two variables and analyzes extending the result to the closure of quasi-homogeneous ideals in m variables when the zero variety has dimension one.

Abstract:In this paper, we define the asymptotic stable division property for submodules of the Bergman module. We show that under a mild condition, a submodule with the asymptotic stable division property is p-essentially normal for all p>n. A new technique is developed to show that certain submodules have the asymptotic stable division property. This leads to a unified proof of most known results on essential normality of submodules as well as new results. In particular, we show that an ideal defines a p-essentially normal submodule of the Bergman module, for all p>n, if its associated primary ideals are powers of prime ideals whose zero loci satisfy standard regularity conditions near the sphere.

Abstract:We develop the theory of central ideals on commutative rings. We introduce and study the central seminormalization of a ring in another one. This seminormalization is related to the theory of regulous functions on real algebraic varieties. We provide a construction of the central seminormalization by a decomposition theorem in elementary central gluings. The existence of a central seminormalization is established in the affine case and for real schemes.

Abstract:In this article we study some algebraic aspects of multicomplex numbers $\mathbb M_n$. For $n\geq 2$ a canonical representation is defined in terms of the multiplication of $n-1$ idempotent elements. This representation facilitates computations in this algebra and makes it possible to introduce a generalized conjugacy $\Lambda_n$, i.e. a composition of the $n$ multicomplex conjugates $\Lambda_n:=\dagger_1\cdots \dagger_n$, as well as a multicomplex norm. The multicomplex algebra equipped with this norm and $\Lambda_n$ as the involution forms a C$^*$-algebra. The ideals of the ring of multicomplex numbers are then studied in details. Free $\mathbb M_n$-modules and their linear operators are considered. Finally, we develop Hilbert spaces on the multicomplex algebra.

Abstract:We first compare several algebraic notions of normality, from a categorical viewpoint. Then we introduce an intrinsic description of Higgins' commutator for ideal-determined categories, and we define a new notion of normality in terms of this commutator. Our main result is to extend to any semi-abelian category the following well-known characterization of normal subgroups: a subobject $K$ is normal in $A$ if, and only if, $[A,K]\leq K$.

Abstract:In \cite{GW} Guo and the second author showed that the closure $[I]$ in the Drury-Arveson space of a homogeneous principal ideal $I$ in $\mathbb{C}[z_1,...,z_n]$ is essentially normal. The proof exploited combinatorial relations between the weights of the shift operators on the space. One can show that their result extends to the Bergman space for the ball $\mathbb{B}_n$ and closely related spaces, but thus far no one has been able to extend the result to other ideals in pursuit of the conjecture of Arveson \cite{Ar2}. In this note, the authors use techniques from harmonic analysis involving the radial derivative and the complex tangential derivative \cite{Gr} to extend the result to the closure of any principal polynomial ideal in the Bergman space. In particular, the commutators and cross-commutators of the restrictions of the multiplication operators are shown to be in the Schatten $p $-class for $p>n$. The same is true for polynomials with vector-valued coefficients. Abstract:Algebras defined over fields of characteristic zero and positive characteristic usually do not behave the same way. However, for certain algebras, for example the group algebras, they behave the same way as the characteristic zero case at good enough prime. In this paper, we initiate the study of this topic by imposing increasingly strong hypotheses on basic algebras. When the algebras satisfy the right hypotheses, we have equalities of the dimensions of their cohomology groups between simple modules and equalities of graded Cartan numbers. The examples include the Solomon descent algebras of finite Coxeter groups at large enough primes, nil-Coxeter algebra, and certain finite semigroup algebras at an arbitrary prime.

Abstract:We introduce a Grassmannian structure for a class of quotient Hilbert modules and attack the polydisc version of Arveson-Douglas conjecture associated to distinguished varieties. More interestingly, we obtain an operator-theoretic characterization of distinguished varieties in the bidisk in terms of essential normality of the quotient modules. As an application, we study the K-homology of the boundary of distinguished variety.

Abstract:First, I will quickly recall some of the basic elements of the minimal model program. Then, I concentrate on the interactions between the minimal model program and some moduli problems. In particular, I explain the construction of moduli spaces of varieties of general type via the minimal model program. Abstract. The Hecke symmetry is a salient feature of Shimura varieties. In the more recent past these symmetries have led to the notion of leaves, a global structure on the reduction of modular varieties of PEL type defined by Oort, and conjecturally for all Shimura varieties with good reduction. The Hecke symmetry also led to the notion of canonical coordinates on leaves, generalizing the classical Serre-Tate coordinates. We will discuss some recent works related to the Hecke symmetry : (1) -adic and p-adic monodromy of leaves, and irreducibility of leaves (joint work with F. Oort). One of the methods for showing that the p-adic monodromy is big is inspired by H. Hida. (2) CM lifting modulo Hecke symmetry (joint work with B. Conrad and F. Oort). Abstract. In this lecture we explain how to attach a p-adic representation to a vector bundle with strongly semistable reduction of degree zero on a p-adic curve. We also discuss higher dimensional generalizations. This is a report on joint work with Annette Werner. Abstract. Since the proof of Iwasawa's main conjecture in the classical case (the- orem of Mazur and Wiles), automorphic forms on GL(2) have played an essential role to understand GL(1)-problems. After the breakthrough by A. Wiles ((1)), there has been a substantial progress in the class field theory for GL2. In this talk, open problems in classical Iwasawa theory are discussed from this perspective, based on Galois deformations.
