Abstract:A plenty of uniform and spherical ruthenium nanoparticles were prepared by the adsorption–bioreduction method using the Cacumen Platycladi extract and supported on the activated carbon which was modified with nitric acid. The catalytic performance of as-prepared Ru/AC–HNO3 catalysts was investigated in the liquid phase hydrogenation of 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-dione to 2,2,4,4-tetramethylcyclobutane-1,3-diol. Different characterization techniques of BET, XRD, TEM, and FTIR were applied to understand the origin of the catalytic activity. With a comprehensive analysis of the experimental results, we can draw a conclusion that the higher dispersion of ruthenium nanoparticles and the smaller particle size give rise to the results which indicate a remarkable enhancement of the catalytic performance in comparison with the non-modified AC samples.

Abstract:The design of an ideal heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation reaction is to impart the catalyst with synergetic surface sites active cooperatively toward different reaction species. Herein a new strategy is presented for the creation of such a catalyst with dual active sites by decorating metal and metal oxide nanoparticles with ultrafine nanoclusters at atomic level. This strategy is exemplified by the design and synthesis of Ru nanoclusters supported on Ni/NiO nanoparticles. This Ru-nanocluster/Ni/NiO-nanoparticle catalyst is shown to exhibit ultrahigh catalytic activity for benzene hydrogenation reaction, which is 55 times higher than Ru-Ni alloy or Ru on Ni catalysts. The nanoclusters-on-nanoparticles are characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscope, Cs-corrected high angle annular dark field-scanning transmission electron microscopy, elemental mapping, high-sensitivity low-energy ion scattering, and X-ray absorption spectra. The atomic-scale nanocluster-nanoparticle structural characteristics constitute the basis for creating the catalytic synergy of the surface sites, where Ru provides hydrogen adsorption and dissociation site, Ni acts as a "bridge" for transferring H species to benzene adsorbed and activated at NiO site, which has significant implications to multifunctional nanocatalysts design for wide ranges of catalytic reactions.

Abstract:A series of bulky pyridine-bridged NHC-Ru complexes have been rationally designed and synthesized; these exhibited very high catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of cyclic and linear carbonates under mild reaction conditions. In the presence of catalytic amounts of a weak base, a broad range of substrates with different ring size and steric bulk were well tolerated, providing methanol and the corresponding diols in excellent yields with a catalyst loading as low as 0.5 mol %.

Abstract:Two kinds of immobilized Ru catalysts were synthesized by anchoring different ruthenium complexes on the functionalized mesoporous MCM-41 and then characterized with elemental analysis, atomic absorption spectrophotometer, UV-Vis and FT-IR. Hydrogenation of carbon dioxide to formate was investigated over these catalysts in CO2-expanded solvent. High formate yield was obtained but no by-product was detected. The effects of solvents and bases on the catalyst activity were also examined. These two catalysts are different in their activities and stabilities, especially at lower temperature and hydrogen partial pressure. They are promising in industry because of the easiness of catalyst separation and reuse.

Abstract:Development of high-performance catalysts for carbon dioxide (CO2) hydrogenation is crucial for CO2 utilization. Herein, a heterogeneous catalyst for CO2 hydrogenation to formate was developed by coordinating the mononuclear Ru3+ center (Ru hereafter) with a N,P-containing polymer, which was synthesized from phosphonitrilic chloride trimer and 2,6-diaminopyridine. Multiple nitrogen functionalities in the polymer (N content: 25.9 wt %) containing pyridine nitrogen and phosphazene nitrogen not only provided an electron-rich coordination environment for stabilizing mononuclear Ru center but also facilitated CO2 conversion by interacting with CO2 molecules. The polymer-coordinated mononuclear Ru catalysts (Ru/p-dop-POMs) could promote the hydrogenation of CO2 to formate with a turnover number (TON) up to 25.4 × 103 in aqueous solutions, and the concentration of formate in the solution could reach 3.4 mol/L. DFT calculations revealed that the electron-rich mononuclear Ru site could promote H2 dissociation, which is the rate-determining step in the reaction, thereby enhancing the catalytic activity. Abstract:There is widespread interest in the hydrogenation of CO2 to produce high-energy substances such as formic acid. Herein, ruthenium trichloride was immobilized on porous phosphine polymers (Ru/KAPs-Ph-PPh3) and gave excellent catalytic activity in the hydrogenation of CO2 to produce formate. With the assistance of 1,8-diazabicyclo[5.4.0]undec-7-ene (DBU), a high turnover number (TON) of up to 1470000 was obtained in 12 hours at 120 & DEG;C and a total pressure of 6 MPa (P(H-2)/P(CO2)=1 : 1), with average TOFs of 122500 h(-1). Moreover, the catalyst can be easily recovered by filtration with acceptable catalytic effectiveness.

Abstract:The development of improved and less costly catalysts for dehydrogenation of formic acid (HCOOH) is of general interest for renewable energy technologies involving hydrogen storage and release. Theoretical calculations reveal that ruthenium (Ru) nanoparticles supported on nitrogen-doped carbon should be appropriate catalysts for such transformations. It is predicted that nitrogen doping significantly decreases the formation of CO, but at the same time increases CO tolerance of the catalysts. To prove these hypotheses heterogeneous ruthenium catalysts supported on porous nitrogen-doped carbon (Rux/CN) with hierarchical structure were synthesized using carbon nitride (C3N4) as template and phenanthroline (Phen) as ligand. Experimental tests in HCOOH dehydrogenation revealed the optimal catalyst Ru7/CN exhibiting good thermal stability and a high turnover frequency (TOF > 1300 h-1), which is more than one order of magnitude higher than that of the commercial Ru5/C catalyst.

Abstract:The immobilization of metal nanoparticles in the framework of porous carbon for heterogeneous catalysis may avoid particle aggregation, movement, and leaching, thus leading to a high catalyst efficiency. In this Full Paper, an approach to prepare Ru nanoparticles incorporated into the pore walls of porous carbon to form a sandwiched Ru/C nanostructure for heterogeneous hydrogenation is demonstrated. Physical adsorption of nitrogen, X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, field-emission transmission electron microscopy, field-emission scanning electron microscopy, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy techniques are employed to study the structure and morphology of the catalysts. Catalytic results show that the Ru nanoparticles sandwiched in the pore walls of porous carbon display a remarkably high activity and stability in the hydrogenation of benzene. An enhanced hydrogen spillover effect is believed to play a significant role in the hydrogenation reaction because of the intimate interfacial contact between Ru nanoparticles and the carbon support. The catalyst system described in this work may offer a new concept for optimizing catalyst nanostructures.

Abstract:Ruthenium complexes [Ru(L1) 2 (CH 3 CN) 2 ](PF 6 ) 2 ( 1 ), [RuL1(CH 3 CN) 4 ](PF 6 ) 2 ( 2 ) and [RuL2(CH 3 CN) 3 ](PF 6 ) 2 ( 3 ) (L1= 3-methyl-1-(pyrimidine-2-yl)imidazolylidene, L2 = 1,3-bis(pyridin-2-ylmethyl)benzimidazolylidene) were obtained through a transmetallation reaction of the corresponding nickel–NHC complexes with [Ru( p -cymene) 2 Cl 2 ] 2 in refluxing acetonitrile solution. The crystal structures of three complexes determined by X-ray analyses show that the central Ru(II) atoms are coordinated by pyrimidine- or pyridine-functionalized N-heterocyclic carbene and acetonitrile ligands displaying the typical octahedral geometry. The reaction of [RuL1(CH 3 CN) 4 ](PF 6 ) 2 with triphenylphosphine and 1,10-phenanthroline resulted in the substitution of one and two coordinated acetonitrile ligands and afforded [RuL1(PPh 3 )(CH 3 CN) 3 ](PF 6 ) 2 ( 4 ) and [RuL1(phen)(CH 3 CN) 2 ](PF 6 ) 2 ( 5 ), respectively. The molecular structures of the complexes 4 and 5 were also studied by X-ray diffraction analysis. These ruthenium complexes have proven to be efficient catalysts for transfer hydrogenation of various ketones.

Abstract:The three kinds of amine-modified silica supported ruthenium complexes developed for the first time are effective catalysts for the synthesis of formic acid from supercritical carbon dioxide and hydrogen, the activity is comparable to that of homogeneous catalysts, TOF up to 1190 h −1 can be obtained at 100% selectivity of formic acid over “Si”—NH 2 —RuCl 3 with bis(1,2-diphenylphosphino)ethane used as ligand. These catalysts also offer the practical advantages such as easy separation and reuse.

Abstract:Carbon dioxide hydrogenation with base to generate formate salts can provide a means of storing hydrogen in an energy dense solid. The stored hydrogen can later be released upon acidification of the formate salts or formic acid can be used directly in fuel cells. However, this application requires catalytic CO2 hydrogenation, which would ideally use an earth abundant metal as the catalyst. In this article, six new (CNC)CoIL2 pincer complexes were synthesized and fully characterized, including single crystal X-Ray diffraction analysis on four new complexes. These complexes contain an imidazole-based (1R) N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) ring or a benzimidazole based NHC ring (2R) in the CNC pincer. The R group is para to N on the pyridine ring and been varied from electron withdrawing (CF3) to donating (Me, OMe) substituents. The L type ligands have included CO and phosphine ligands (in PPh32 and PMe32). Thus, two known Co complexes (1, 1OMe) and six new complexes (1Me, 1CF3, 2, 2OMe, PPh32, PMe32) were studied for the CO2 hydrogenation reaction. In general, the unsubstituted CNC pincer complexes bearing two carbonyl ligands led to the highest activity. The best catalyst, 2, remains active for over 16 h and produces a turnover number of 39,800 with 20 bars of 1:1 CO2 / H2 mixture at 60 °C.

Abstract:Cationic ruthenium pincer complexes, [Ru(CNC)(CO)(PPh3)Cl]X (CNC = 2,6‐bis(1‐methylimidazol‐2‐ylidene)‐pyridine, X = Cl− [1a], PF6− [1b]), [Ru(CNC)(PPh3)2Cl]X (X = Cl− [2a], PF6− [2b]) and [Ru(CNC)(PPh3)2(H)]X (X = Cl− [3a], PF6− [3b]) with triphenylphosphine, CO and halides as coligands have been synthesised and characterised by 1H, 13C, 31P NMR, mass and single‐crystal X‐ray crystallography. The application of Ru complexes in the transfer hydrogenation of a wide range of ketones with 2‐propanol as the hydrogen source is explored. The in situ transformations observed during the synthesis help understand and suggest a plausible mechanism via the hydride complex 3b. All complexes appear to be efficient catalyst precursors for transfer hydrogenation of ketones.

Abstract:Developing single-atom photocatalysts for selective conversion of CO2 to valuable fuel is of great attraction but remains challenging. In this work, ruthenium and copper single atoms are for the first time simultaneously incorporated into polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) through a simple preassembly-coprecipitation-pyrolysis process. The obtained PCN-RuCu sample exhibited much higher selectivity (95%) for CH4 production than the individual Ru or Cu decorated PCN during photocatalytic CO2 reduction under visible-light irradiation. The atomically dispersed Ru-N4 and Cu-N3 moieties were confirmed by spherical aberration-corrected electron microscopy and extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Density function theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the co-existence of Ru-N4 sites and Cu-N3 sites can effectively tune the electronic structure of PCN, making the Ru sites account for photogenerated electron-hole pairs and the Cu sites for CO2 hydrogenation. Moreover, the synergetic effect between Ru and Cu single atoms significantly promotes the consecutive hydrogenation processes of *CO species towards CH4 production. Our studies provide a new understanding of the mechanism for photocatalytic reduction of CO2 to CH4, and pave a new way to design photocatalysts for the selective production of solar fuels.

Abstract:Ruthenium nanoparticles with a core-shell structure formed by a core of metallic ruthenium and a shell of ruthenium carbide have been synthesized by a mild and easy hydrothermal treatment. The dual structure and composition of the nanoparticles have been determined by synchrotron X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) imaging. According to depth profile synchrotron XPS and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, metallic ruthenium species predominate in the inner layers of the material, ruthenium carbide species being located on the upper surface layers. The ruthenium carbon catalysts presented herein are able to activate both CO2 and H2, exhibiting exceptional high activity for CO2 hydrogenation at low temperatures (160-200 °C) with 100% selectivity to methane, surpassing by far the most active Ru catalysts reported up to now. On the basis of catalytic studies and isotopic 13CO/12CO2/H2 experiments, the active sites responsible for this unprecedented activity can be associated with surface ruthenium carbide (RuC) species, which enable CO2 activation and transformation to methane via a direct CO2 hydrogenation mechanism. Both the high activity and the absence of CO in the gas effluent confer relevance to these catalysts for the Sabatier reaction, a chemical process with renewed interest for storing surplus renewable energy in the form of methane.

Abstract:The hydrogenation of CO2 to produce formic acid has garnered increasing interest as a means to address climate change and promote the hydrogen economy. This research investigates the nanocasting technique for the synthesis of ordered mesoporous nitrogen-doped carbon (MNC-An). KIT-6 functioned as the silica template, while aniline served as the nitrogen–carbon precursor. The resultant MNC-An exhibits cubic Ia3D geometry, possesses significant mesoporosity, and has a high nitrogen content, which is essential for stabilizing ruthenium single atoms. The catalyst exhibited a specific activity of 252 mmolFAgcat−1 following a 2 h reaction at 120 °C. Moreover, the catalyst exhibited exceptional relative activity during five recycling experiments while preserving its catalytic efficacy. The atomically dispersed ruthenium and its Ru3+ oxidation state demonstrated perseverance both before and after the treatment. The results indicated that the synthesized catalyst possesses potential for the expedited commercialization of CO2 hydrogenation to produce formic acid. The elevated carbon yield, along with excellent thermal stability, renders it a viable substrate for attaching and stabilizing atomically dispersed ruthenium catalysts.

Abstract:The catalytic hydrogenation of CO2 to formate was achieved using the previously reported dichloro(ƞ6‐p‐cymene){diphenyl(3‐methyl‐2‐indolyl)phosphine}ruthenium (1) as a catalyst under mild conditions. In this complex, the phosphorus‐based ligand adopts a κ1‐P coordination mode. The catalytic activity was achieved in the presence of DBU as a base providing a TONmax value of 3,800. In order to explore potential transformations occurring within the catalytic reactions, a series of stoichiometric tests were performed. Complex 1 was reacted with DBU to form chloro(ƞ6‐p‐cymene){diphenyl(3‐methyl‐2‐indolide)phosphine}ruthenium (2). Structural characterization of complex 2 confirmed a κ2‐P,N coordination mode for the ligand resulting in a four membered metallacycle. Reaction of 2 with H2 led to the formation of hydrochloro(ƞ6‐p‐cymene){diphenyl(3‐methyl‐indolyl)phosphine}ruth‐enium (3), albeit not with a clean conversion. This is the product resulting from the formal addition of hydrogen across the Ru‒N bond of the metallacycle. Complex 3 was also synthesised via an alternative route involving the reaction of complex 1 with Me2NH•BH3.

Abstract:In this contribution, the synthesis and characterization of eight ruthenium(II) carbonyl complexes supported by chelating alkane-bridged bis-N-heterocyclic carbene ligands are reported. The products obtained are analyzed using infrared and NMR spectroscopies. The molecular structures of four metal complexes were determined by X-ray crystallography, which exhibit the six-coordinate octahedral geometry with two carbene carbon atoms from the bidentate Bi-NHCs, two carbonyl groups and two chlorine atoms in the trans(Cl)–cis(CO) configuration. All these complexes show catalytic activities in transfer hydrogenation of ketones.
