Abstract:Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area is suffering from atmospheric pollution from a long time. The understanding of the air pollution mechanism is of great importance for officials to design strategies for the environmental governance. Mixing layer height (MLH) is a key factor influencing the diffusion of air pollutants. It plays an important role on the evolution of heavy pollution events. Light detection and ranging (lidar), is an effective remote-sensing tool, which can retrieve high spatial and temporal evolution process within mixing layer (ML), especially the variation of MLH. There are many methods to retrieve MLH, but each method has its own applicable limitations. The Mie-lidar data in Beijing was firstly used to compare three different algorithms which are widely used under different pollution levels. We find that the multi-layer structure near surface may cause errors in the detection of mixing layer. The MLH retrieved based on image edge detection was better than another two methods especially under heavy polluted episode. Then we applied this method to investigate the evolution of the mixing layer height during a pollution episode in December 2016. MLH at Gucheng county showed the positive correlation with the concentration of particulate matters during the start of this pollution episode. The elevated pollution level in Gucheng was not associated with MLH's decrease, and the significantly increased particulate matters raised the boundary layer, which trapped the pollutants near the surface.
Pollution Characteristics of PM10 and PM2.5 in the Atmosphere in Beijing

Abstract:The average concentration levels as well as the spatial and temporal differences of PM_(10) and PM_(2.5) of three sites in Beijing were analysed.It shows that the seasonal comparisons in the urban tie with that in the northwest district,but the suburb was different from the urban and the northwest district and the level was the lowest.PM_(2.5) rose according to the PM_(10),but the seasonal comparison was not the same as PM_(10).The ratio of PM_(2.5)/PM_(10) was the highest in the summer at three sites.The level of particles among three sites was the urban>the northwest district>the suburb,besides PM_(10)in the northwest district was more than the urban in the 2006 spring.The analysis results povide basic information and suggestion for further study on particles in the atmosphere.

Abstract:Atmospheric aerosol levels are high in different regions of China. Changes in atmospheric stability and mixing layer height (MLH) may affect the vertical aerosol distribution during pollution events. Here, we continuous studied the spatiotemporal distribution of MLH in China over 2000-2013 to characterize the regional-scale properties of atmospheric boundary layers. MLH was larger in the Southern Coastal and Southeastern China (1241.5 +/- 73.5 and 632.7 +/- 61.8m, respectively), but lower in Eastern and Southwestern China (518.1 +/- 63.6 and 462.7 +/- 88.5 m, respectively). We divided the monitoring stations into 11 regions; these regions could be classified into three types with an increasing linear trend (95% confidence level), with a decreasing linear trend (95% confidence level), and with fluctuation changes. In all regions, MLH was higher in spring and summer than in autumn and winter. The spatial distribution of the diurnal MLH increased significantly at 1400 BJT (Beijing time) in all regions, with the strongest radiation being noted during the daytime. Higher levels of PM2.5 with corresponding lower MLH were noted during winter, indicating that lower MLH could confine the pollutant diffusion to near the surface. By contrast, in spring, higher MLH could be potentially due to the dynamic condition. In general, the poor air quality days occurred more frequently in winter than in other seasons. As the air quality worsened, most MLH showed a decreasing trend in almost all regions. This work provides information that aids in further understanding not only MLH distribution in China but also specific PM-MLH interaction to facilitate regional atmospheric environment monitoring and prediction.
Determination and climatology of the diurnal cycle of the atmospheric mixing layer height over Beijing 2013–2018: lidar measurements and implications for air pollution

Abstract:Abstract. The atmospheric mixing layer height (MLH) determines the space in which pollutants diffuse and is thus conducive to the estimation of the pollutant concentration near the surface. The study evaluates the capability of lidar to describe the evolution of the atmospheric mixing layer and then presents a long-term observed climatology of the MLH diurnal cycle. Detection of the mixing layer heights (MLHL and MLHL′) using the wavelet method based on lidar observations was conducted from January 2013 to December 2018 in the Beijing urban area. The two dataset results are compared with radiosonde as case studies and statistical forms. MLHL shows good performance in calculating the convective layer height in the daytime and the residual layer height at night. While MLHL′ has the potential to describe the stable layer height at night, the performance is limited due to the high range gate of lidar. A nearly 6-year climatology for the diurnal cycle of the MLH is calculated for convective and stable conditions using the dataset of MLHL from lidar. The daily maximum MLHL characteristics of seasonal change in Beijing indicate that it is low in winter (1.404±0.751 km) and autumn (1.445±0.837 km) and high in spring (1.647±0.754 km) and summer (1.526±0.581 km). A significant phenomenon is found from 2014 to 2018: the magnitude of the diurnal cycle of MLHL increases year by year, with peak values of 1.291±0.646 km, 1.435±0.755 km, 1.577±0.739 km, 1.597±0.701 km and 1.629±0.751 km, respectively. It may partly benefit from the improvement of air quality. As to converting the column optical depth to surface pollution, the calculated PM2.5 using MLHL data from lidar shows better accuracy than that from radiosonde compared with observational PM2.5. Additionally, the accuracy of calculated PM2.5 using MLHL shows a diurnal cycle in the daytime, with the peak at 14:00 LST. The study provides a significant dataset of MLHL based on measurements and could be an effective reference for atmospheric models of surface air pollution calculation and analysis.

Abstract:Abstract. Although much efforts have been put on studying air pollution, our knowledge on the mechanisms of frequently occurred intense haze episodes in China is still limited. In this study, using three years of measurements of air pollutants at three different height levels on a 325-meter Beijing meteorology tower, we found that a positive particulate matter-boundary layer feedback mechanism existed at three vertical observation heights during intense haze polluted periods within the mixing layer. This feedback was characterized by a higher loading of PM2.5 with a shallower mixing layer. Measurements showed that the feedback was related to the decrease of solar radiation, turbulent kinetic energy and thereby suppression of the mixing layer. The feedback mechanism can explain the rapid formation of intense haze episodes to some extent, and we suggest that the feedback mechanism should be considered in air quality models for better predictions.

Abstract:Abstract. Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is closely linked to human health, with its sources generally divided into local emissions and regional transport. This study combined concentration-weighted trajectory (CWT) analysis with the HYSPLIT trajectory ensemble to obtain hourly-resolution pollutant source results. The Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost) model was then employed to simulate local emissions and ambient PM2.5 in Beijing from 2013 to 2020. The results revealed that clean air masses influencing the Beijing area mainly originated from the north and east regions, exhibiting a strong winter and weak summer pattern. Following the implementation of the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (Action Plan) by the Chinese government in 2017, pollution in Beijing decreased significantly, with the most substantial reduction in regional transport pollution events occurring in the west region during summer. Regional transport pollution events were most frequent in spring, up to 1.8 times higher than in winter. Pollutants mainly originated from the west and south regions, while polluted air masses from the east showed the least reduction, and the proportion of pollution sources from this region is gradually increasing. From 2013 to 2020, local emissions were the main contributors of pollution events in Beijing. The Action Plan has more effectively reduced pollution caused by regional transport, particularly during autumn and winter. This finding underscores the importance of Beijing prioritizing local emission reduction while also considering potential contributions from the east region to effectively mitigate pollution events.
Mixing Layer Height on the North China Plain and Meteorological Evidence of Serious Air Pollution in Southern Hebei

Abstract:To investigate the spatiotemporal variability of the mixing layer height (MLH) on the North China Plain (NCP), multi-site and long-term observations of the MLH with ceilometers at three inland stations (Beijing, BJ; Shijiazhuang, SJZ; Tianjin, TJ) and one coastal site (Qinhuangdao) were conducted from 16 October 2013 to 15 July 2015. The MLH of the inland stations in the NCP were highest in summer and lowest in winter, while the MLH on the coastal area of Bohai was lowest in summer and highest in spring. As a typical site in southern Hebei, the annual mean of the MLH at SJZ was 464 ± 183 m, which was 15.0 and 21.9 % lower than that at the BJ (594 ± 183 m) and TJ (546 ± 197 m) stations, respectively. Investigation of the shear term and buoyancy term in the NCP revealed that these two parameters in southern Hebei were 2.8 times lower and 1.5 times higher than that in northern NCP within 0–1200 m in winter, respectively, leading to a 1.9-fold higher frequency of the gradient Richardson number > 1 in southern Hebei compared to the northern NCP. Furthermore, combined with aerosol optical depth and PM2.5 observations, we found that the pollutant column concentration contrast (1.2 times) between these two areas was far less than the near-ground PM2.5 concentration contrast (1.5 times). Through analysis of the ventilation coefficient in the NCP, the near-ground heavy pollution in southern Hebei mainly resulted from the lower MLH and wind speed. Therefore, due to the importance of unfavorable weather conditions, heavily polluting enterprises should be relocated and strong emission reduction measures should be introduced to improve the air quality in southern Hebei.
The difference in the boundary layer height between urban and suburban areas in Beijing and its implications for air pollution

Abstract:Serious regional pollution often erupts in clean areas, and the impact of boundary layer structure evolution on heavy pollution in clean areas urgently needs to be studied. During the period from November 3rd to December 31st, 2014, ceilometers were used to observe the boundary layer height (BLH) of urban and suburban areas in Beijing. During the observation period, there was no significant difference in the average BLH between the urban and suburban areas of Beijing, both of which had BLHs of approximately 600 m. However, there were significant differences in the diurnal changes in the boundary layer between the urban and suburban areas. During the day, the urban area BLH was 112 m higher than the suburban area BLH, and at night, the urban area BLH was 144 m lower than the suburban area BLH. Under the background of rapid urbanization in Beijing, the variation in the underlying surface and the large amount of anthropogenic heat emissions were the main reasons for the differences between the urban and suburban boundary layers. Combined with an analysis of particulate matter concentrations, it was found that the insufficient development of the boundary layer in the suburbs at noon limited the diffusion of pollutants and caused the accumulation of pollutants, resulting in a clean, low-emission area that was heavily polluted. This research has important guiding significance for clarifying the cause of heavy regional pollution.

The feedback mechanism can explain the rapid formation of intense haze episodes to some extent, and we suggest that the detailed feedback mechanism warrants further investigation from both model simulations and field observations.
Elucidating roles of near-surface vertical layer structure in different stages of PM2.5 pollution episodes over urban Beijing during 2004–2016

Abstract:Local weather conditions play important roles in surface fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pollution episodes in metropolitan areas. Relative to surface meteorological factors, the roles of near-surface vertical structure of urban boundary layer in air pollution has yet to be fully understood, due to limitation of vertical observation. By using surface PM2.5 observations and multi-layer (15 levels) vertical meteorological elements from a 325-m meteorological tower during 2004-2016, we investigated the different stages of 456 PM2.5 Pollution Episodes (PPEs) and their associations with vertical urban boundary layer structure in Beijing. The average PM2.5 concentration during PPEs is 141.2 μg m−3, twice the 13-year average (70.3 μg m−3). PPEs are more frequent and severe in autumn and winter, showing significant seasonal variations. For vertical wind, southerly (southwesterly) winds prevailed from 80 m to 320 m in the early stage of pollution episodes, transporting pollutants to Beijing. While strong northerly (northwesterly) winds prevailed in near-surface layer in the dissipation stages (DSs) and after PPEs, effectively removing pollutants. Owing to different thermal dynamic conditions, the starting hours of PPEs are various, showing that PPEs with stable atmospheric stratification occur most frequently at 1800 LST. Particularly, for long-lasting PPEs, shortwave (longwave) radiation at near-surface layer is weakened (enhanced) due to the existence of clouds and pollutant aerosols, attenuating the momentum flux and sensible heat flux, which further aggravates the accumulation of pollutants. Our findings provide a better understanding of the physical formation mechanism of high concentrations of the PM2.5 pollution episodes and may aid in designing effective mitigation strategies for the urban environment and health.

Abstract:Rapid urbanization and industrialization have led to deterioration of air quality in the Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei (BTH) region due to high loadings of PM2.5. Heavy aerosol pollution frequently occurs in winter, in close relation to the planetary boundary layer (PBL) meteorology. To unravel the physical processes that influence PBL structure and aerosol pollution in BTH, this study combined long-term observational data analyses, synoptic pattern classification, and meteorology–chemistry coupled simulations. During the winter of 2017 and 2018, Beijing and Tangshan often experienced heavy PM2.5 pollution simultaneously, accompanied by strong thermal inversion aloft. These concurrences of pollution in different cities were primarily regulated by the large-scale synoptic conditions. Using principal component analysis with geopotential height fields at the 850 hPa level during winter, two typical synoptic patterns associated with heavy pollution in BTH were identified. One pattern is characterized by a southeast-to-north pressure gradient across BTH, and the other is associated with high pressure in eastern China. Both synoptic types feature warmer air temperature at 1000 m a.g.l., which could suppress the development of the PBL. Under these unfavorable synoptic conditions, aerosols can modulate PBL structure through the radiative effect, which was examined using numerical simulations. The aerosol radiative effect can significantly lower the daytime boundary layer height through cooling the surface layer and heating the upper part of the PBL, leading to the deterioration of air quality. This PBL–aerosol feedback is sensitive to the aerosol vertical structure, which is more effective when the synoptic pattern can distribute more aerosols to the upper PBL.
Impact of residual layer transport on air pollution in Beijing, China

Abstract:The residual layer (RL) stores a large amount of pollutants, but its effect on near-surface pollution is unknown. In this study, a two-year continuous observation was performed in Beijing using a ceilometer. The generalized boundary layer includes the mixing layer and RL. The results showed that there is no significant seasonal difference in the generalized boundary layer height (GBLH). The average GBLHs in spring, summer, autumn and winter are 1155, 1139, 1036 and 1195 m, respectively. The diurnal variation characteristics of spring, summer and autumn are similar, and the RL disappears when the mixing layer height reaches its peak in the afternoon. In winter, the development of the mixing layer is weak, and there is a 33.8% chance that the RL cannot be breached, thus making the mixing layer height at noon much lower than the GBLH. The concentrations of PM2.5 in the mixing layer and RL are 89 and 52 μg m-3, respectively, and the probability that the PM2.5 concentration in the RL was higher than that near the ground was 38.9%. RL transport represents an important beginning of the pollution process during the winter mornings and afternoons in Beijing. This study is helpful to better understand the structure of the RL and its influence on air pollution.

Abstract:The rapid development in the economy during past decades has caused serious air pollution issues in China with high concentrations of PM2.5 and O3, particularly in the densely populous cities. To integrate PM2.5 and O3 controls, it is necessary to understand the impacts of meteorology on both pollutants. Thereby, the complex linkages between planetary boundary layer (PBL), synoptic forcing, regional transport, and heavy pollution in Beijing and Shanghai during summer were investigated using long-term measurements, simulations, and reanalysis. Influenced by the unfavorable meteorological conditions, PM2.5 pollution and O3 pollution often simultaneously occurred. In Beijing, the heavy concurring pollutions usually happened on the days with shallow afternoon PBL and southerly/southwesterly prevailing winds. Within the PBL, the pollutants emitted from the southern plains can be transported to Beijing and accumulated on the windward side of the mountains. At the top of PBL, the synoptic southerly warm advections can strengthen the elevated thermal inversion layer and suppress the development of PBL, leading to worse pollution. Contrarily, the heavy pollutions in Shanghai usually occurred on the days with deep afternoon PBL and southwesterly warm advections within the PBL. Although the warm advections were more favorable to the PBL development than the movements of cool marine air mass, the input of pollutants from the southwest can overweigh this advantage, resulting in poor air quality in Shanghai. The occurrence of heavy pollution or clean condition in Shanghai was primarily determined by the synoptic forcing rather than the local PBL structure. This comparative study indicates that the relationship between PBL height and pollution level is changeable and complicated, which needs to be elucidated from the synoptic perspective.
Influence of Boundary Layer Structure and Low-Level Jet on PM 2.5 Pollution in Beijing: A Case Study.

Abstract:Beijing experiences frequent PM pollution, which is influenced by the planetary boundary layer (PBL) structure/process. Partly due to a lack of appropriate observations, the impacts of PBL on PM pollution are not yet fully understood. Combining wind-profiler data, radiosonde measurements, near-surface meteorological observations, aerosol measurements, and three-dimensional simulations, this study investigated the influence of PBL structure and the low-level jet (LLJ) on the pollution in Beijing from 19 to 20 September 2015. The evolution of the LLJ was generally well simulated by the model, although the wind speed within the PBL was overestimated. Being influenced by the large-scale southerly prevailing winds, the aerosols emitted from the southern polluted regions could be easily transported to Beijing, contributing to ~68% of the PM measured in Beijing on 20 September. The relative contribution of external transport of PM to Beijing was high in the afternoon (≥80%), which was related to the strong southerly PBL winds and the presence of thermally-induced upslope winds. On 20 September, the LLJ in Beijing demonstrated a prominent diurnal variation, which was predominant in the morning and after sunset. The occurrence of the LLJ could enhance the dilution capacity in Beijing to some extent, which favors the dilution of pollutants at a local scale. This study has important implications for better understanding the complexity of PBL structure/process associated with PM pollution in Beijing.

Abstract:Both extreme heat and heavy air pollution can cause adverse health impacts on urban inhabitants. To understand heat stress and its relationship with boundary layer structure and air pollution in Beijing, this study analyzed surface meteorological observations, radiosonde measurements, and ground-level PM2.5 and O3 concentrations in summer from 2015 to 2019, in conjunction with simulated air quality and MERRA-2 data. We measured the heat stress using a heat index that combines temperature and humidity to quantify the sensible temperature as perceived by humans, and found that high heat risk in Beijing was often associated with a low boundary layer height and poor air quality. To reveal the underlying physical mechanism involved, we objectively classified the synoptic conditions in North China. The typical synoptic pattern associated with the coupling of heat and pollution in Beijing was found to feature a southeast-to-north pressure gradient at the 700-hPa level, leading to westward warm advection above planetary boundary layer (PBL) and southward movement of warm, humid, and polluted air masses within the PBL towards Beijing. The elevated warm advection can enhance the capping of thermal inversion over the PBL and suppress the PBL's development and the vertical dispersion of pollutants. With mountains to the north and west, pollutants and heat can be trapped in a limited volume in Beijing, increasing the health risk from heat and pollution. These findings on the meteorological mechanisms of the coupling between heat and pollution in Beijing may have important implications for limiting the current health risk and preparing for any projected changes in it in the future.
New Insight into PM2.5 Pollution Patterns in Beijing Based on One-Year Measurement of Chemical Compositions.

Abstract:In recent years, air pollution has become a major concern in China, especially in the capital city of Beijing. Haze events occur in Beijing over all four seasons, exhibiting distinct characteristics. In this study, the typical evolution patterns of atmospheric particulate matter with a diameter of less than 2.5μm (PM2.5) in each season were illustrated by episode-based analysis. In addition, a novel method was developed to elucidate the driving species of pollution, which is the largest contributor to the incremental PM2.5 (ΔPM2.5), not PM2.5. This method revealed a temporal variation of the driving species throughout the year: nitrate-driven spring, sulfate-driven summer, nitrate-driven early fall, and organic matters (OM)-driven late fall and winter. These results suggested that primary organic particles or volatile organic compounds emissions were dominant in the heating season due to residential heating, while NOx and SO2 emissions dominated in the other seasons. Besides, nitrate formation seemed more significant than sulfate formation during severe pollution episodes. It was also found that the pollution formation mechanism in the winter showed some unique features in comparison with the other seasons: aqueous reactions were more important in the winter, while multiple pathways coexisted in the other seasons. Furthermore, this study confirmed that the PM2.5 in Beijing was moderately acidic despite a fully neutralized system. In addition, the acidity variation during pollution episodes displayed different patterns between seasons and was driven by both the variation of aerosol water and chemical compositions. These results provide a new perspective to understand the characteristics and mechanisms of aerosol pollution in Beijing. However, more accurate measurements are necessary for effective air pollution control that depends on the seasonal variation of fine particle formation in Beijing and the surrounding areas.

Abstract:Transported pollution plays an important role in the atmospheric environment of eastern China. This study analyzed the characteristics of surface winds at different air quality levels using meteorological station observations of both wind and mass concentrations of particulate matter with aerodynamic diameters <2.5 μm (PM2.5) over Hong Kong and Beijing. In recent decades, wind directions at the surface exhibit a similar pattern for both good and poor air quality levels at all three stations, indicating a weak relationship between surface winds and air quality in Hong Kong. However, winds at a height of 1–2 km govern pollution accumulation. This dominant role is illustrated by a sudden change in wind direction within this layer and a simultaneous pollution accumulation stage on 8 January 2014. The controlling influence of winds at 1–2 km on both the deterioration and improvement of air quality is also supported by a distinct vertical wind distribution for all 21 monotonic increasing stages and 17 decreasing stages of PM2.5. In contrast, air pollution is transported to Beijing throughout the atmospheric layer that extends from the surface to a height of more than 3 km. This key difference may be due to variations in meteorology, topography, and emission sources between Hong Kong and Beijing. The results that layer of 1–2 km in Hong Kong and of surface to 3 km in Beijing is the height where pollution transport is most likely to occur are critical for forecasting severe haze episodes in eastern China.

Abstract:In Chinese megacities the problems of air pollution are frequently obvious as hazy layers covering large areas combined with low visibility. To estimate the aerosol effect on regional and global climate, the knowledge of light‐absorbing and light‐scattering compounds as well as their mixing state is essential. A Volatility Tandem DMA (VTDMA) was used to measure nonvolatile fractions (at 300°C) of submicrometer aerosol particles. The remaining size distributions were divided into three fractions, corresponding to particles with a low‐volatile, medium‐volatile, and high‐volatile fraction. The particles with a low‐volatile fraction are equivalent with externally mixed nonvolatile (refractory) material; in the observed size range, this fraction is assumed to consist mainly of soot. Combined with number size distributions, the number and volume concentrations of externally and internally mixed nonvolatile particles were calculated. In a parallel study by Cheng et al. (2009) the results were used in a Mie model and compared with measured absorption coefficients showing a good agreement. During Campaigns of Air Quality Research in Beijing and Surrounding Region 2006 (CAREBeijing‐2006), large variations in the mixing state were found, especially between new particle formation and heavily polluted days. The fraction of externally mixed soot decreased from ∼37% during clean to 18% during heavily polluted periods, parallel to an increase in particle mass concentration mainly caused by the production of secondary aerosol material. In the nucleation mode, high particle number fractions with high‐volatile fractions were found (∼64% in contrast to ∼24% on a nonevent day); that is, refractory material is produced during nucleation and growth.
Morphology, composition and mixing state of individual airborne particles: Effects of the 2017 Action Plan in Beijing, China

Abstract:Beijing is one of the most important Chinese megacities with extremely serious air pollution problems and human health impacts. In response to the air pollution the central and municipal governments of China have implemented a series of actions; one of which is the “Action Plan for Comprehensive Prevention and Control of Autumn and Winter Air Pollution in Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and Surrounding Areas 2017–2018” (the Action Plan) issued in 2017. The morphology, composition and mixing state of individual particles collected after the Action Plan was implemented were analyzed by high resolution-transmission electron microscopy coupled with an energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (TEM-EDX). The relative percentages of different individual particle types and the main sources of the particulate pollution before and after the Action Plan were compared. The results showed that sulfur was most frequently detected in the individual particles, and the particle types were mainly composed of soot aggregates, mineral particles, organic particles, metal particles, coal fly ashes, sulfate particles, and mixture particles. The mixture and sulfate particles dominated in the autumn samples, both for the haze and non-haze days. In winter the mineral and mixture particles dominated in samples for the non-haze days, while mixture particles and sulfate dominated in the samples for the haze days. The mixture particles in autumn were mainly the soot aggregates internally mixed with sulfate (S-soot type), while the mixture particles in winter were mainly the S-soot type and the mineral particles internally mixed with sulfate (S-mineral type). After the Action Plan, the relative percentages of sulfate particles, organic particles, and soot aggregates increased, while the relative percentages of mineral particles, metal particles and fly ashes decreased. The contribution from coal-fired sources was reduced significantly as evidenced by the decrease in the fly ash particles. The vehicle emissions and secondary reaction of particulate matter became the main sources of atmospheric particulate matters as evidenced by increase in sulfate particles, organic particles, and soot aggregates. The results presented in this study will assist in other plans to improve air quality and human health in megacities around the world.

Abstract:Primary work on the planetary boundary layer (PBL) climatic features and associated air pollution in Beijing was carried out based on a 40-year dataset. The main results are identified as follows. The annual mean PBL height was 906 m (1455 m in daytime and 357 m in nighttime). Within the PBL, the average potential temperature, specific humidity, and wind speed were 287.3 K, 5.1 g kg−1, and 6.5 m s−1. Significant seasonal variations were observed in the PBL variables, leading to distinct pollutant diffusion conditions. The PM2.5 concentrations varied seasonally, with a high value in winter (97 µg m−3) and a low value in summer (74 µg m−3). The summertime PM2.5 was closely related to the local emission intensity (R = 0.79) and declined with a reduction in the emission intensity, while the winter PM2.5 showed large interannual variabilities and trends, relying more on the PBL conditions. A comparison of polluted and clean winters was performed, revealing that polluted winters were associated with a warmer layer above the PBL that inhibited the development of the PBL (933 m vs. 1283 m, daily maximum height for polluted vs. clean winters) and led to a humid (1.4 g kg−1 vs. 0.8 g kg−1) and weak wind (5.8 m s−1 vs. 8.2 m s−1) layer within the PBL. In terms of synoptic impacts, the warm advection above the PBL (0.07 K h−1) and subsidence heating (0.21 K h−1) near the top of the PBL contributed to the occurrence of a stable and polluted PBL.
