Abstract:Different microscopic and thermodynamic properties like the resonance light scattering intensity, micro-environment polarity, the density and heat capacity of {water+ TBA} binary solution and the density of {water+ TBA+ IBA} ternary solution were precisely measured. Formation and structure transitions of alcohol-water aggregate in TBA aqueous solution and {water+ TBA+ IBA} ternary solutions at different compositions were investigated by analysis of both microscopic and thermodynamic properties. It is indicated from the results that the fine structure transitions in hydrotrope solutions can be well reflected by the variance of thermodynamic properties, which provides an efficient way to give deeper insight into the structure changes in aqueous hydrotrope solutions.

Abstract:Aqueous liquid mixtures, in particular, those involving amphiphilic species, play an important role in many physical, chemical and biological processes. Of particular interest are alcohol/water mixtures; however, the structural dynamics of such systems are still not fully understood. Herein, a combination of terahertz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS) and NMR relaxation time analysis has been applied to investigate 2-propanol/water mixtures across the entire composition range; while neutron diffraction studies have been carried out at two specific concentrations. Excellent agreement is seen between the techniques with a maximum in both the relative absorption coefficient and the activation energy to molecular motion occurring at similar to 90 mol% H2O. Furthermore, this is the same value at which well-established excess thermodynamic functions exhibit a maximum/minimum. Additionally, both neutron diffraction and THz-TDS have been used to provide estimates of the size of the hydration shell around 2-propanol in solution. Both methods determine that between 4 and 5 H2O molecules per 2-propanol are found in the 2-propanol/water clusters at 90 mol% H2O. Based on the acquired data, a description of the structure of 2-propanol/water across the composition range is presented.

Abstract:<h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Hypothesis</h3><p>The structural details, viscosity trends and dynamic phenomena in <em>t</em>-butanol/water solutions are closely related on the molecular scales across the entire composition range. Utilizing the experimental small- and wide-angle x-ray scattering (SWAXS) method, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and the 'complemented-system approach' method developed in our group it is possible to comprehensively describe the structure-viscosity-dynamics relationship in such structurally versatile hydrogen-bonded molecular liquids, as well as in similar, self-assembling systems with pronounced molecular and supramolecular structures at the intra-, inter-, and supra-molecular scales.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Experiments</h3><p>The SWAXS and x–ray diffraction experiments and MD simulations were performed for aqueous <em>t</em>-butanol solutions at 25 °C. Literature viscosity and self-diffusion data were also used.</p><h3 class="u-h4 u-margin-m-top u-margin-xs-bottom">Findings</h3><p>The interpretive power of the proposed scheme was demonstrated by the extensive and diverse results obtained for aqueous <em>t</em>–butanol solutions across the whole concentration range. Four composition ranges with qualitatively different structures and viscosity trends were revealed. The experimental and calculated zero-shear viscosities and molecular self-diffusion coefficients were successfully related to the corresponding structural details. The hydrogen bonds that were, along with hydrophobic effects, recognized as the most important driving force for the formation of <em>t</em>–butanol aggregates, show intriguing lifetime trends and thermodynamic properties of their formation.</p>

Abstract:The liquid liquid equilibrium (LLE) data of ternary systems of water + n-fructose + 1-butanol, water + n-glucose + 1-butanol, and water + D-galactose + 1-butanol were determined at three temperatures (288.2, 303.2, and 318.2 K) and atmospheric condition. The distribution coefficients of the monosaccharides were lower than 0.05. For all the three saccharides, their content in the organic-rich phase increased as their content in the aqueous phase increased. The experimental tie-line data were fitted using the Othmer-Tobias equation. The saccharide universal quasichemical functional-group activity coefficient (S-UNIFAC) model was used to predict the LLE data with all the average absolute deviations (AAD) values higher than 0.013. The modified universal quasichemical model was then used to correlate the LLE data. The correlation results agreed better with experimental data than the prediction results obtained with S-UNIFAC. In the production of traditional Chinese medicines, 1-butanol is a promising extractant used to separate active compounds and saccharides in aqueous herbal extracts.
Phase behavior and mesoscale solubilization in aqueous solutions of hydrotropes

Abstract:Hydrotropes are amphiphilic molecules that are too small to spontaneously form equilibrium structures in aqueous solutions, but form dynamic, noncovalent assemblies, referred to as clusters. In the presence of a hydrophobic compound, these clusters seem to get stabilized leading to the formation of long-lived, highly stable mesoscopic droplets, a phenomenon that we call mesoscale solubilization. In this work, we focus on the unusual mesoscopic properties of aqueous solutions of a nonionic hydrotrope, namely tertiary butyl alcohol (TBA), on addition of various hydrophobic compounds. Aqueous TBA solutions, in about 3 to 8 mol percent TBA concentration range and about 0 to 25 deg. C temperature range, show the presence of short-ranged (0.5 nm), short-lived (tens of picoseconds) molecular clusters which result in anomalies of the thermodynamic properties. These clusters are transient but do not relax by diffusion, thus distinctly different from conventional concentration fluctuations. In this concentration and temperature range, upon the addition of a third (more hydrophobic) component to TBA-water solutions, long-lived mesoscopic droplets of about 100 nm size are observed. In this work, we clarify the ambiguity behind the definition of solubility and elucidate the phenomenon of mesoscale solubilization. A systematic study of the macro and meso phase behavior of three ternary systems TBA-water-propylene oxide, TBA-water-isobutyl alcohol, and TBA-water-cyclohexane has been carried out. We differentiate between molecular solubility, mesoscale solubilization, and macroscopic phase separation. We have confirmed that practically stable aqueous colloids can be created from small molecules, without addition of surfactants or polymers. Such kind of novel materials may find applications in the design of various processes and products, ranging from pharmaceuticals to cosmetics and agrochemicals.

Abstract:In this work, the aggregation behavior of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium p-toluenesulfonate (BmimTOS), a new type of cationic hydrotrope, was investigated, where two distinct inflection points C-1 and C-2 were reflected by the change of conductivity, micro-polarity, surface tension. Therefore, it is speculated that small aggregate was formed in BmimTOS aqueous solution after C(1 )and structure change of these aggregates may be presented to form larger aggregates after C-2. The formation of aggregate and the change of the aggregate size were further confirmed by dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. However, as suggested by micro-polarity measurements, these aggregates are not typical micelle-like ones. Furthermore, such two-step aggregation behavior was shown to be presented at a wide temperature region from 288.15 K to 318.15 K; however, the phenomenon cannot be observed when the alkyl chain length on imidazolium cation was changed into ethyl-, hexyl-, or octyl-.
Mesoscopic structuring and dynamics of alcohol/water solutions probed by terahertz time-domain spectroscopy and pulsed field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance.

Abstract:Terahertz and PFG-NMR techniques are used to explore transitions in the structuring of binary alcohol/water mixtures. Three critical alcohol mole fractions (x(1), x(2), x(3)) are identified: methanol (10, 30, 70 mol %), ethanol (7, 15, 60 mol %), 1-propanol (2, 10, SO mol %), and 2-propanol (2, 10, SO mol %). Above compositions of x(1) no isolated alcohol molecules exist, and below x, the formation of large hydration shells around the hydrophobic moieties of the alcohol is favored. The maximum number of water molecules, N-0, in the hydration shell surrounding a single alcohol molecule increases with the length of the carbon chain of the alcohol. At x(2) the greatest nonideality of the liquid structure exists with the formation of extended hydrogen bonded networks between alcohol and water molecules. The terahertz data show the maximum absorption relative to that predicted for an ideal mixture at that composition, while the PFG-NMR data exhibit a minimum in the alkyl chain self-diffusivity at x(2), showing that the alcohol has reached a minimum in diffusion when this extended alcohol water network has reached the highest degree of structuring. At x(3) an equivalence of the alkyl and alcohol hydroxyl diffusion coefficients is determined by PFG-NMR, suggesting that the molecular mobility of the alcohol molecules becomes independent of that of the water molecules.

Abstract:Liquid–liquid equilibrium (LLE) of a ternary mixture of water, 2,3-butanediol, and 4-methyl-2-pentanol has been measured at three different temperatures (298.2, 308.2, and 318.2 K) under atmospheric pressure. The experimentally measured solubility and tie-line data for the two-phase system were used to construct a ternary phase diagram at each temperature. With the experimental data, the distribution coefficients and separation factors were also calculated and Othmer–Tobias and Hand plots were used to verify the consistency of the measured data. The universal quasichemical (UNIQUAC) and nonrandom-two liquid (NRTL) models were used for the LLE, and the root-mean-square deviation values between the calculated and experimental data were less than 1.21% by the UNIQUAC model and less than 1.96% by the NRTL model, indicating that both model calculations provide excellent agreement with the experimentally measured LLE data in the present study.

Abstract:Background Hydrogen bonding deeply influences the properties of liquids and solutions, impacting various fields. Understanding hydrogen bonding within complex mixtures is crucial for process optimization. Thermodynamic measurements offer experimental insights into interaction energetics. Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations provide a molecular-level understanding of the hydrogen bonding networks present in these systems. Methods This research investigates how mixtures containing 4-methyl-2-pentanol and various 1-alkanols behave, focusing on the importance of hydrogen bonding. An Anton Paar SVM 3000 Stabinger viscometer was used to determine the density and viscosity of these mixtures. Free Volume Theory (FVT) helped analyze the viscosity of binary mixtures. Additionally, computational simulations (using the M05–2X/6–311++G** basis sets) were performed to gain deeper insights into the hydrogen bonding characteristics within these mixtures. Significant Finding Analysis of excess molar volumes revealed that these mixtures exhibit a progressive increase in positive excess molar volumes with an extension in the alkyl chain length. This trend demonstrates a high level of agreement with computational data, indicating the reliability of computational methods in predicting and understanding the behavior of such mixtures. Additionally, the study provides insights into the molecular interactions at play, suggesting a basis for future research and potential industrial applications in optimizing separation processes.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid-solid equilibria for the ternary system water + sodium chloride + diethylene glycol monobutyl ether have been measured at 303.15 K. The binodal curve and tie lines together with the complete phase diagram have been determined. The fluorescence emission of pyrene in aqueous solution of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether was recorded in a Hitachi F-4500 spectrofluorometer at room temperature with the purpose of investigating the polarity change of solution environment with or without salt. UV-vis spectra for an aqueous solution of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether with different salt concentrations were recorded in a TU1901 UV-vis spectrophotometer. Viscosities were also measured for a 0.08 mass fraction aqueous solution of diethylene glycol monobutyl ether with different concentrations of salt to investigate the salt effect at 303.15 K. The results indicate that molecular interaction between diethylene glycol monobutyl ether and water becomes weaker by the addition of salt.

Abstract:A quantitative characteristic of associations in solutions can be determined by calculating the fraction of molecules of each component containing a specified number of molecules of the same or another component in their immediate environment. In our previous work [1], we considered the proximity only between solute molecules. The analysis of calculated characteristics revealed features of structural changes exhibited by aqueous tert -butyl alcohol (TBA) and trimethylamine oxide (TMAO) solutions upon the concentration increase. In the present study, we apply this approach to other types of neighborhoods and consider water molecules surrounded by solute molecules and solute molecules surrounded by water molecules. The obtained data provide additional important information on the structural features of the studied solutions. It is shown that the TBA solutions have a heterogeneous structure manifested both as the presence of close aggregates of alcohol molecules and as the preservation of water regions composed of water molecule containing only water molecules in their environment.

Abstract:Ethanol and water are the primary components of liquor. In this study, molecular dynamics (MD) simulations and density functional theory (DFT) were used to model ethanol-water clusters and infer possible structures of ethanol-water solutions. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and density of states analysis were employed to confirm the existence of clusters and further describe their properties. By comparing binding energies and calculating coordination numbers, we found that the ethanol-water solution with a molecular ratio of 1:2 forms three stable clusters. Under ideal conditions, the cluster ratio is approximately 1:1:6. Generally, the clusters undergo continuous splitting and recombination.

Abstract:Liquid-liquid phase equilibria for ternary systems of water + (ethanolil-propanol) + 1-decyl-3methylimidazolium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([Dmim][NTf2]) were measured at T = 298.15 K and atmospheric pressure. Influences of alcohols with different length of alkyl chain on the liquid-liquid equilibria were revealed by the distribution coefficient and selectivity of the alcohols. The phase diagrams for the ternary systems were classified as Treybal's Type I behavior. The experimental data of ternary liquid-liquid equilibria were correlated by the nonrandom two liquid (NRTL) and the universal quasi-chemical (UNIQUAC) models, in which the interaction parameters were optimized. The values of root-mean-square deviation between the experimental and the calculated data show that those models can correlate the experimental data of the studied systems with good accuracy. Abstract:The current study contributes to research on some thermophysical properties of ternary aqueous mixtures containing glycerol with 1,2-ethanediol, 1,2-propanediol, or 1,3-butanediol and their corresponding binary mixtures. Experimental measurements concerned density and refractive index at various temperature and under atmospheric pressure. PC-SAFT was applied successfully for predicting liquid density for the mixtures and different mixing rules of refractive index were used for modeling the experimental values of refractive index. The experimental data were also used to calculate the excess molar volumes, , and refractive index changes on mixing, , for the ternary systems. These were subsequently compared to results obtained with a variety of semi-empirical methods using binary system results. On the other hand, the following derived properties were computed for each binary mixture, based on temperature and glycerol concentration: excess molar volumes, , partial molar volumes, , apparent molar volumes, , partial molar volumes at infinite dilution, , excess partial molar volume at infinite dilution, , isobaric thermal expansions, , excess thermal expansions, , and refractive index deviations, . Infrared spectroscopy analysis was also carried out at atmospheric temperature and pressure. Infrared spectroscopy analysis was also carried out at ambient temperature and pressure. All the measured and calculated properties demonstrate a significant impact of molecular structure, including the size, shape, and length of the carbon chain. As expected, the infrared spectra of these mixtures show a strong potential for hydrogen bonding.

Abstract:Methyl tert-butyl ether (MTBE) is a colorless and transparent liquid that exhibits excellent miscibility with gasoline. It is employed extensively in gasoline formulations due to its efficacy in augmenting the octane number. Additionally, high-purity MTBE can be applied as a pharmaceutical intermediate. For the purification of MTBE during its production, it can form an azeotrope with methanol. In this work, to purify MTBE from the azeotrope via extraction, the efficacy of three organic solvents ethylene glycol, ethanolamine, and diethanolamine as potential extractants was assessed. The liquid-liquid equilibrium data of the ternary systems (methanol + MTBE + ethylene glycol/ethanolamine/diethanolamine) were ascertained at 298.15 K. The effectiveness of the extracting agents was evaluated with the calculated selectivity and the distribution coefficient. The findings demonstrated that ethanolamine displays a superior extraction capacity for extracting methanol. The ascertained data were correlated by applying the NRTL model, achieving the root-mean-square deviation values that did not exceed 0.01. The reliability of the model's optimal parameters was verified by topological analysis, confirming its coherence with the experimental data.

Abstract:Mixing ionic liquids (ILs) with a molecular cosolvent can largely reduce the high viscosities, high polarities, and high costs of ILs. The macroscopic properties of IL-cosolvent mixtures have been studied extensively. However, some fundamental questions regarding the microscopic properties of the binary mixtures still remain to be answered. In this work, the structural and hydrogen-bond features of binary systems containing 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF4]) and methanol/ethanol were studied by using the combination of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Excess infrared absorption spectroscopy with enhanced spectral resolution was used to analyse the original IR spectra. The alcohol tetramer/larger multimers, alcohol trimer, anion-alcohol, ion pair-alcohol, and ion cluster-alcohol complexes were identified in the excess spectra. With the increasing [BMIM][BF4], the alcohol multimers gradually broke out from the larger multimers into smaller multimers. The hydrogen-bonded complex related with anion [BF4]- and alcohol gradually changes from anion-alcohol complex to ion pair-alcohol complex. The ion cluster-alcohol appears when the x(alcohol) is <0.50. The most stable optimized geometries of anion-alcohol, ion pair-alcohol, and ion cluster-alcohol were carefully analysed, and the hydrogen-bonds were identified. All of the hydrogen-bonds in these studied complexes had weak strength, closed shells and electrostatically dominant interactions.

Abstract:The structure of tert-butyl alcohol (TBA) solution in carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) is studied over the entire concentration range using molecular dynamics simulation (MD). It is shown that at low alcohol concentrations (within 5% molar fraction), separate small associates of TBA appear as a result of hydrogen bonding between alcohol molecules, and cyclic structures of four TBA molecules appear among these associates. With increasing concentration, the formation of hydrogen-bonded associates quickly reaches its limit corresponding to 1.7 bonds per molecule as in pure TBA. At high alcohol concentrations, both linear and cyclic associates of TBA molecules are observed with a noticeable fraction of cyclic tetramers. Using the Voronoi method, aggregates of the nearest TBA molecules are considered. The number and size of such aggregates grows rapidly with concentration due to the presence of “nuclei” formed by hydrogen bonding. At an alcohol mole fraction of 15%, a percolation cluster of TBA molecules begins to form in the solution. On the contrary, in the local environment of CCl4 molecules no significant structural rearrangements occur, only a gradual replacement of the molecules is observed upon addition of alcohol. However at low content of CCl4 in alcohol, we can see some tendency to clustering of CCl4 molecules, which may indicate on a slight solvophobic effect in this solution.
