Abstract:Based to the monthly monitoring data of monitoring points in the Dianchi lake and the Taihu lake,analysis of pollutions with lake water at the same time in different geographical situation was comparatively studied,and the correlation between water quality of surface water and biochemical characters of cyanobacterial biomass was assessed.The results revealed that the degree of eutrophication in the Dianchi Lake was higher than that of the Taihu Lake during monitoring.Water quality index in the Dianchi lake showed increase-reduce-increase,and was highest in June.While the water quality index in the Taihu lake showed a rising trend monthly.The content of kjeldahl nitrogen,total phosphorous and the total nutrients(N+P2O5+K2O) of the Dianchi Lake cyanobacteria biomass was same as the Taihu Lake,but the C/N was higher than the Taihu Lake.The content of the heavy metal elements in the various samples levels were lower than the organic fertilizer industry standards(NY525-2011) except for As and Cd.Correlation analysis showed that lead and chromium of cyanobacteria biomass had significant homology.In addition,the content of ammonium nitrogen in surface water could be used as the extent indicator of eutrophication.
Long-term Water Quality Variations and Influencing Factors in Dianchi Lake, China – Insights from 30-Year Data

Abstract:Changes in water quality in Dianchi Lake over a long temporal scale have been closely related to climate change and the issuance of governance policies. In this study, the Mann-Kendall test and the Theil-Sen estimation were utilized to examine the average trends of water quality changes at ten monitoring sites within Dianchi Lake over the past 30 years (1989-2018) and the corresponding impacts of policies (including point-source, nonpoint-source (NPS) pollution control, ecological restoration (ER), and enforcement and supervision) and climatic conditions. Analysis of regression curves indicates that NH4+-N and total nitrogen (TN) in Dianchi Lake slightly increased, while total phosphorus (TP), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), permanganate index (CODMn), and Chl-a decrease when compared to baseline concentrations at the initial study period. During the medium phase of the study period, policy impacts on water quality were inconspicuous, with certain pollutants exhibiting no relationship with policy issuance, evidenced instead by water temperature-induced fluctuations in Chl-a, which inversely correlated with nutrient trends. During the 11th Five-Year Plan, pollutants including NH4+-N, TN, TP, and CODMn, which reached peak levels, subsequently underwent a marked reduction between 2009 and 2015. This pronounced decrease is likely attributable to the implementation of comprehensive NPS and ER policies during this period.
Impact of Land Use Change on Water Quality in the Dianchi Lake Watershed, Yunnan, China, 1988-2008

Abstract:Land use changes occurring in China during the time period of rapid economic development are linked to the degradation of water quality in streams and lakes. This paper examines these linkages in the Dianchi Lake watershed in Yunnan in southwest China based on a twenty-year data set from 1988 to 2008. Pearson correlation analysis and simple linear regression analysis are employed to explore the relationships between land use change and water quality of two sub-basins, the Caohai Lake basin and the Waihai Lake basin, within the Dianchi Lake watershed. Land use categories more strongly correlate to water quality in the Caohai Lake basin than that in the Waihai Lake basin. The different structure of land use categories, spatial distribution of land cover, and scales of buffer zones could be the factors resulting in the dissimilarities between these two lakes. The research can provide valuable insights for policymakers into land use management in order to curb further water degradation in Dianchi Lake.

Abstract:The water quality of a basin is pronouncedly affected by the surrounding types of land use. Analyzing the impact of LULC and landscape patterns on water quality is critical for identifying potential drivers. To further study how LUCC affects the water quality in a typical plateau lake basin, this study investigated the impacts of land-use types on water quality in the Dianchi Lake Basin in Southwest China. We analyzed changes in land-use types and the landscape pattern of the Dianchi basin, calculated the CWQI (Canadian Water Quality Index) value based on the water quality indexes (PH, total phosphorus (TP), total nitrogen (TN), chemical oxygen demand (COD), dissolved oxygen (DO), permanganate index (CODMn), five-day biochemical ox-ygen demand (BOD5), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), turbitidy, and chlorophyll-a (Chla)), used the RDA (Redundancy Analysis) and SMLR (Stepwise multiple linear regression) methods, the coupling degree, coupling coordination degree, and the geographical detector model to explore the relationship between water quality and changes in the land-use type. The results show that (1) changes in the land-use types were obvious: the majority of the land, which was originally forest land, became built land in 2020 and farmland in 1990 (except for the Dianchi water). Landscape pattern indexes indicated that almost all land-use types were first scattered, then gathered from 1990 to 2020. (2) Changes in the water quality of Dianchi Lake lagged behind the changes in land-use types, and the variation trends were similar to the landscape pattern variation trends. The CWQI value decreased in a nearly linear fashion from 1990 to 1998, exhibited a slight change from 1999 to 2013, and quickly increased from 2013. (3) Land-use types demonstrated a tight correlation with the Dianchi water quality, and LPI was the most dominant factor in both Caohai Lake and Waihai Lake. (4) There were different indexes affecting the coupling coordination degrees of Caohai Lake and Waihai Lake.

Abstract:Water-quality deterioration and eutrophication of the Lake Dianchi have acquired more and more attention in the last few decades. In this paper, the spatial and temporal eutrophication status of the Lake Dianchi was assessed. The comprehensive trophic state index was chosen to assess the trophic status of the Lake Dianchi in the past 13 years. The result reveals that the trophic condition of Caohai is more serious than that of Waihai. Most of time Caohai was in extremely hypereutrophic state from 1988 to 2000. The trophic condition of Waihai had a worsening tendency from 1988 to 2000. Waihai was in eutrophic state before 1995, but it got in a hypereutrophic state after 1995. It was pointed out that TN and TP were the two biggest contributors of CTSIM in both Caohai and Waihai.

Abstract:This paper introduces a simple method to assess aquatic environmental quality in water quality of a lake. Lake Dianchi was used as a case study. The sediments, contributing rivers, and water body of the lake are taken to represent the whole lake's aquatic environment. They are analyzed and ranked through PCA and relative principal component. The result showed that the worst and best sediment sampling points are Yunlianghe River and Guanyinshan West. Among all the 26 contributing rivers, Xinher River is ranking the first, representing the worst water quality. The Dongdahe River is ranking the last, representing the best water quality among all rivers. The yearly water quality ranking of Lake Dianchi is varied in different years. There isn’t a fixed direction in water quality evolvement. It showed that water pollution control is a hard issue.
Identification of Water Quality Trends in Lake Dianchi Using an Integrated STL and RSI Approach

Abstract:An integrated Seasonal-Trend Decomposition using LOESS(STL) and Regime Shift Index(RSI) approach was employed to identify the water quality trends in Lake Dianchi. The data of 10 water quality variables during 1998—2010 at eight monitoring stations in Lake Dianchi were analyzed. The trend components were filtered using the STL,and the characteristics of each trend component were analyzed using the RSI method. The model results showed that(a) the water quality at all monitoring stations demonstrated similar trends during 1998—2010;(b) Biochemical Oxygen Demand(BOD 5) showed a decreasing trend while Permanganate Index(COD Mn) concentrations showed a significantly increasing trend,suggesting that the organic matter in Lake Dianchi became less bio- degradable during the 13-year period; and(c) the eutrophication in Lake Dianchi intensified with time,with total nitrogen(TN) concentrations increasing through the 13-year period and nitrogen as the limiting nutrient gradually. The analysis also suggested that nitrogen and phosphorus reduction should be the focus for Lake Dianchi eutrophication control during the 12thFive-Year plan period.

Abstract:Lake Dianchi is a famous plateau freshwater lake,and has been included in nationalThe Three Rivers and Three Lakestreatment project since the 9th Five-Year Plan. In this study,Mann-Kendall and Daniel trend test are used to analyze interannual variability of typical pollutant indices( CODMn,BOD5,TN,NH3-N and TP) of Waihai of Lake Dianchi in 1982—2012. The correlation between population,GDP per person in Lake Dianchi basin and CODMn,TN and TP is analyzed to clarify impacts of socio-economic development on water quality change of Lake Dianchi. Results indicate that indices of water quality changed greatly during period of 1988—2012. TN and NH3-N showed significant rising trend at 0. 01 significance level,CODMnand TP had an upward trend but not significant,BOD5 was almost not changed,and results of Mann-Kendall and Daniel are basically consistent. TN and CODMnare closely correlated with population and GDP per person. Socio-economic development is an important cause of increase of TN and CODMn. TP is negatively correlated with population and GDP per person after 2000 year,because of effects of treatment on phosphorus. With steady progress of Dianchi pollution control,especially implementation ofthe 11 th Five-Year Water Pollution Control Plan,the impacts of socio-economic development on TN,TP have weakened,and initial results have been achieved in phosphorus treatment.

Abstract:Dianchi Lake belongs to the Jinshajiang River system of the Yangtze River Basin. Due to the fast growth of economic and social development, Dianchi Lake has lost its self-purification capability and suffers from serious eutrophication. This study summarized historic trajectory of the ecological and environmental changes in the lake basin, with emphasis on the changes of physical, chemical, biological, and ecological characteristics of the lake as well as the social development in recent years. Despite the great efforts initiated by the government aiming at restoration of the environmental quality of the lake, the results were not substantially significant. We believe that a comprehensive lake model is imperative to understand the ecological functions of the lake and establish scientifically defined realistic goals for the restoration. In addition, continual modernization of rural area and certain adjustment in population decentralization in the lake basin area will help reduce the environmental pressure.

Abstract:During the past 20 years, the ecological environment of Dianchi Lake has been adversely affected by climate change and human activities, which directly affected the ecosystem and biodiversity of the Dianchi Lake watershed. Analyzing the spatiotemporal variation of chlorophyll a (Chla) concentration of Dianchi Lake and exploring the internal and external factors effect on Chla concentration is the basis for controlling and improving the water ecological environment of Dianchi Lake, and it is also the key to prevent and control the water pollution of Dianchi Lake. In this study, the water quality of Dianchi Lake was examined using 12 water quality indicators from 10 water quality monitoring sites for the duration between 2000 to 2017. The changing characteristics of Chla in the context of internal and external factors were analyzed. The spatiotemporal evolution process of Chla concentration in the past 20 years was also evaluated. The results indicated that Chla concentration was significantly and positively correlated with the chemical oxygen demand (CODCr), the Dianchi Lake watershed gross domestic product (GDP), and the impervious surface area (ISA) of the watershed, in addition to the total phosphorus (TP), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5), ammonia hydrogen (NH3-N), water temperature (WT), and civil vehicle ownership. Moreover, a significant and negative correlation was noticed between Dianchi Lake watershed GDP and NH3-N, BOD5, TP, total nitrogen (TN), and comprehensive nutrition state index (TLI). The Dianchi Lake population was negatively correlated with TP, TLI, and BOD5. The concentration of Chla in Dianchi Lake was affected by both internal factors, and external factors such as anthropogenic activities, the latter of which was the main cause of the continuous deterioration of the lake water quality.

Abstract:Damage to the water ecosystems and the deterioration of lake water resources may negatively affect the surface water resources, particularly which of the daily drinking water supply of residents. Therefore, it is particularly important to study the spatio-temporal heterogeneity of water quality in large lakes. We analyzed the data from six sampling sites in Lake Chaohu from 2001 to 2017 and eight sampling sites of the inflow rivers in 2001, 2009, and 2017. The 6 sampling sites were divided into SG I and SG II through cluster analysis, and the spatio-temporal changes of the water quality in the Lake Chaohu Basin were studied. The results indicated the following: all nutrient variables had relatively high concentrations in SG II except DO, while SG I had relatively high concentrations of only TN. Besides, the value of Chl a in each group is generally high. On the temporal scale, the changes in the water quality of the lake showed strong seasonality; the nutrient variable (TN, TP, NH4-N, and CODMn) except DO in the inflow rivers is generally higher than that of the lake; the water quality of Lake Chaohu has improved during the study period, and it has also improved to a certain extent compared with that of the late 1980s. Fortunately, parts water quality parameters of Lake Chaohu have improved faster than that of the other four largest freshwater lakes in China. This research result has a certain guiding significance for the prevention and control of large lake water pollution.

Effect of Land Use on Inflow Rivers Water Quality in Lake Dianchi Watershed.

Abstract:Based on data of interpreting TM orthophoto images and water quality monitoring in July 2008,the correlativity of landuse,which was categorized to urban,agriculture,forest and grassland by National Standard for Landuse Category in China,and water quality was analyzed in terms of the whole watershed and sub-watersheds.In whole watershed of Dianchi lake,the urban landuse proportion illustrated positive relations with the water pollution stand(indicating with concentration of CODMn,TP,TN and NH3-N in water),while the other three types of landuse,agriculture,forest and grass,showed negative relations.The urban landuse was the major contributor to pollutants in the watershed,which submerged the contribution of cultivated land.Furthermore,classified 21 sub-watersheds to be 3 types,urban,agriculture and forest-watershed according to different proportions of landuse in the each sub-watershed.There were constant positive relationships between the urban-watersheds and water pollution,while negative relationships were observed for the forest-watershed.Also,the impact of landscape spatial pattern on water quality was discussed.The proportion and pattern of landuse both exerted great effects on the water quality at the scales of the whole watershed and the sub-watershed.
STUDY ON RECENT WATER AREA CHANGE OF DAZONG LAKE BASED ON TOPOGRAPHICAL AND REMOTELY SENSED INFORMATION

Abstract:The information sources, including topographical map at different tines and remote sensing image, were selected to preliminarily investigate the dynamic variation of Dazong Lake with digitized software Coreldraw and GIS analysis method. The overlay analysis of Dazong Lake between the 1920s and the 1950s showed that it had reduced by 5.715km2,which was the maximum in the three periods; the reduction of Dazong Lake between the 1950s and the 1970s was not significant, only 0.26km2, Dazong Lake reduced by 1.412km2 from the 1970s to the 1990s, that is only 25.201km2 remained in the 1990s. The construction of many water conservancy projects resulted in the reduction of water from upper reaches, and the acceleration of drainage in Dazong lake, led to the reduction of Dazong lake between the 1920s and the 1950s. Aquaculture development was the main reason of Dazong lake change after the 1980s.
Lake Water Quality and Dynamics Assessment during 1990-2020 (A Case Study: Chao Lake, China)

Abstract:Settlements along the coastlines of oceans and lakes, which are among the world's most densely populated areas, are in immediate danger due to stressors brought on by climate change and dangers posed by human activities. This study investigates the water changes of Chao Lake during the last 30 years by using Landsat 5, 7 and 8 time-series images and water indices, including Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), Normalized Difference Turbidity Index (NDTI), Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (GNDVI) and Normalized Sea Surface Temperature (SST). The gathered data demonstrates that each estimated indicator's value has increased with time. Thus, over the course of the 30-year research period, the NDWI, NDTI, GNDVI and SST annual average values show increases of 112.10%, 242.42%, 112.82% and 119.42%, respectively. The NDWI index underwent these fluctuations, evidenced with the biggest amount (681.8%) in the winter and the lowest amount (28.13%) in the fall. The most NDTI changes (480%) and the least (only 50%) occurred in summer and fall, respectively. The largest increases in GNDVI (180%) and SST values (537.86%) were observed in winter; the smallest changes in GNDVI (43.48%) and GNDVI (68.76%) in fall. The outcomes also demonstrated a strong link between all four estimated factors. In the majority of the analyzed months, the correlation between the 2 measures, GNDVI and NDTI, was considerably greater and near to 1. The findings of this study may be utilized by managers, decision-makers and local planners for the purpose of environmental planning and reducing water pollution in Chao Lake (and other water regions), as well as reducing the risk of environmental hazards due to water pollution.
Relationships Between Spatial-Temporal Trends of Water Quality and the Human Activities in Lake Dianchi

Abstract:Lake water quality is closely related with human activities,and human activities are the driving factors in lake water quality aggravating.Analyzing the spatial-temporal trend of Lake Dianchi in recent ten years,taking proportion of interrupted land-use by human beings,population density,and GDP per square kilometer as human activity indicators,this paper investigated the relationships between lake water quality and human activities in Lake Dianchi watershed.Firstly,as Lake Dianchi is divided into two parts,Lake Caohai is greatly different from Lake Waihai in terms of water quality.Lake Caohai was polluted seriously and getting worse year by year,while the concentrations of NH3-N,TN and TP in Lake Waihai were much lower than those in Lake Caohai,and changed slightly in past ten years.The concentration level of CODMn in Lake Waihai and its changing situation in past ten years was similar to those of Lake Caohai.Secondly,town construction landuse,population density,and GDP per square kilometer were leading factors in causing the differences between Lake Caohai and Lake Waihai.Meanwhile,city and town expanding,and population and GDP growing led to Lake Caohai polluted seriously,while Lake Waihai was less polluted or sometimes,even better(such as TP),perhaps because of non-point pollution control from agriculture and rural area,or the pollution-cutting-engineering at some inflow rivers' watershed.
STUDIES ON THE CHANGES OF SEVERAL ECOLOGICAL FACTORS DURING THE PROCESS OF WATER SALINIZATION IN DAIHAI LAKE, CHINA

Abstract:Daihai Lake (112°33′31″—46′40″E，40°29′7″ —37′6″N) is a semi saline alkaline lake, which located in Inner Mongolia Pl ateau of China. Based on the results of the chemical and biological surveys of Daihai Lake in summer, 1996 and the survey of geography, hydrology and hydrobiology since 1950s, the author dealt with a comparative analysis on the changes of several relevant ecological factors from 1953 to 1996. Chloride ion, pH and total alkalinity of the lake were gradually increased during the study period, the concentration of chloride ion being 2306.1mg/L, pH 9.33 and total alkalinity 9.68meq /L in 1996, which approach to the upper limit for freshwater fish survival. According to above significant changes, the conclusion could be drawn that the process of salinization of Daihai Lake is getting strong. Also, in the study, the concentration changes of calcium and magnesium ion, ratio of calcium and magnesium, and total hardness was regarded.

Abstract:The hydrological conditions of river-connected lakes are complex primarily owing to their considerable water-level fluctuations (WLFs). Water quality in such lakes varies with hydrodynamic variations; however, their relationship is not clear. To identify the unique relationship between water level and water quality in river-connected lakes, we used the comprehensive pollution index (CPI) and regression analysis to analyze the spatiotemporal variation in water quality in Dongting Lake from 2015 to 2018 and the effects of water level on water quality. Four water quality parameters were selected: total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP), permanganate index (CODMn), and chlorophyll a (Chl-a). The results showed significant spatial variation in the lake water quality, with relatively high concentrations of TN, TP, CODMn, and Chl-a in East Dongting Lake. TN and TP decreased by 12.15% and 37.61%, respectively, from 2015 to 2018, whereas CODMn increased from 1.781 to 2.009 mg/L. Seasonally, TN and TP concentrations were low in the summer and autumn, with high concentrations in the winter and spring. In contrast, CODMn and Chl-a concentrations exhibited opposite trends. The pollution level in Dongting Lake ranged between slightly and moderately polluted, with a CPI ranging from 0.76 to 1.32 across all sampling sites during 2015–2018. The water level in Dongting Lake initially increased and, then, decreased in a year, with marked WLFs owing to seasonal shifts in precipitation and human activities. The water level had significant negative relationships with TN and TP concentrations and a significant positive relationship with CODMn concentration (p < 0.05). Based on the results, strict control of excessive external nutrient loading should be actively implemented in Dongting Lake, in addition to hydrological regulation for effective lake water quality management.

Abstract:The lakes on the Yangtze Plain, a critical source of freshwater and fisheries for hundreds of millions of people in China, have lost a considerable portion of their surface area due to reclamation since the 1950s. Landsat satellites can provide long-term collections of high-resolution images and thus offer great potential for hindcasting the lake reclamations of aquaculture zones and their long-term impacts on the lacustrine water color. Using Landsat observations from 1984 to 2018 and a Forel-Ule index (FUI) model, we studied the water color dynamics of 61 lakes on the Yangtze Plain. Three distinct change patterns were found among the 61 examined lakes, and 25 of the 61 lakes showed statistically significant changes in the annual hue angle values (P < 0.05). We further collected environmental parameter datasets (runoff, normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), and wind speed) and a lacustrine reclamation dataset, and measured the concentrations of chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) and dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from two field trips. We investigated their correlations with water color change from different facets. The results showed that the long-term water color in 33 of the 61 lakes exhibited significant correlations with environmental factors. The reclaimed aquaculture zones in this region have caused differences in the water color between the reclaimed area and that in adjacent natural waters. The Chl-a and DOC levels derived from field surveys further confirmed that reclaimed aquaculture zones increased light-absorbing materials in the water and may deteriorate water quality. This study is an important step forward in understanding the water quality changes in lake ecosystems affected by human impacts and natural variability.
Assessment of Water Pollution Control Strategies: a Case Study for the Dianchi Lake.

Abstract:Lake eutrophication has increasingly become a major environmental issue in China. Although significant efforts have been made towards its resolution in the last decade, most of the implemented control strategies are fragmented, and the formation of policy lacks of sound scientific basis and long-term objectives. Taking the well-known Dianchi Lake as a case study, this paper presented a comprehensive assessment for the effectiveness of various eutrophication control strategies. It is expected that the concluding lessons would have a major implication to future eutrophication control.

Abstract:Various multivariate statistical methods including cluster analysis (CA), discriminant analysis (DA), factor analysis (FA), and principal component analysis (PCA) were used to explain the spatial and temporal patterns of surface water pollution in Lake Dianchi. The dataset, obtained during the period 2003–2007 from the Kunming Environmental Monitoring Center, consisted of 12 variables surveyed monthly at eight sites. The CA grouped the 12 months into two groups, August–September and the remainder, and divided the lake into two regions based on their different physicochemical properties and pollution levels. The DA showed the best results for data reduction and pattern recognition in both temporal and spatial analysis. It calculated four parameters (TEMP, pH, COD Mn , and Chl- a ) to 85.4
