Abstract:This manuscript describes a wideband circularly polarized Vivaldi array antenna for axial ratio enhancement. It consists of four Vivaldi antenna elements arranged in a cross-shaped structure and a 1-to-4 feeding network providing unequal phases. The element is composed of a fan-shaped microwave line for feeding on the bottom and a radiator with a palm-leaf shape on the top. Its simulated impendence bandwidth reaches 29.3% while the gain is 7.1dBi at 5.8GHz. The feeding network is designed as two 90° phase shifters connected by a 1-to-2 power divider. The two phase shifters are symmetrical along the center. It allows to provide 0°, 90°, 0°, and 90° transmission phases in a counterclockwise direction. The four Vivaldi antenna elements are connected with the feeding network by using coaxial line. Thanks for the symmetry of the feeding network, the magnitudes in both directions of the cross-shaped structure are equal. To achieve the circularly polarized wave, the fan-shaped microwave lines utilize current reversal to get 0°, 0°, 180°, and 180° transmission phases in a counterclockwise direction. Then, the designed antenna achieves 0°, 90°, 180°, and 270° transmission phases in a counterclockwise direction, allowing to realize circularly polarized wave with low axial ratio and wide bandwidth. The simulated results shows that the proposed four-element array obtains a gain of 9.6dBi at 5.8GHz while the axial ratio is only 1.3dB. The impendence bandwidth reaches 32.8% while the 1-dB gain bandwidth is over 29.8%. In addition, the proposed antenna obtains a 27.6% bandwidth for 3-dB axial ratio. These results indicate that the presented Vivaldi array antenna has good performance on low axial ratio and wide bandwidth.
