Abstract:Recently, a variant of the Reed-Muller family, called symmetric Reed-Muller codes, was proposed. In this paper, we prove that multivariable symmetric Reed-Muller codes form a class of locally-correctable codes. Then, the dual codes of symmetric Reed-Muller codes are given.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that the projective Reed-Muller~(PRM) codes form a family of locally correctable codes~(LCC) in the regime of low query complexities. A PRM code is specified by the alphabet size $q$, the number of variables $m$, and the degree $d$. When $d\leq q-1$, we present a perfectly smooth local decoder to recover a symbol by accessing $\gamma\leq q$ symbols to the coordinates fall on a line. There are three major parameters considered in LCCs, namely the query complexity, the message length and the code length. This paper shows that PRM codes are shorter than generalized Reed-Muller~(GRM) codes in LCCs. Precisely, given a GRM code over a field of size $q$, there exists a class of shorter codes over a field of size $q-1$, while maintaining the same values on the query complexities and the message lengths.
On Multi-Point Local Decoding of Reed-Muller Codes.

Abstract:Reed-Muller codes are among the most important classes of locally correctable codes. Currently local decoding of Reed-Muller codes is based on decoding on lines or quadratic curves to recover one single coordinate. To recover multiple coordinates simultaneously, the naive way is to repeat the local decoding for recovery of a single coordinate. This decoding algorithm might be more expensive, i.e., require higher query complexity. In this paper, we focus on Reed-Muller codes with evaluation polynomials of total degree d . σ √ q for some σ ∈ (0, 1). By introducing a local decoding of Reed-Muller codes via the concept of codex that has been used for arithmetic secret sharing [6, 7], we are able to locally recover arbitrarily large number k of coordinates simultaneously at the cost of querying O(k √ q) coordinates, where q is the code alphabet size. It turns out that our local decoding of ReedMuller codes shows (perhaps surprisingly) that accessing k locations is in fact cheaper than repeating the procedure for accessing a single location for k times. In contrast, by repetition of local decoding for recovery of a single coordinate, one has to query Ω(k √ q log k/ log q) coordinates for k = q √ q) (and query O(kq) coordinates for k = q √ , respectively). Abstract:Locally correctable codes have found numerous applications in complexity theory, cryptography and the theory of fault tolerant computation. Recently, Guo et al. [1], discovered a family of high rate locally correctable codes by considering lifting of multivariate polynomials. In this paper, we extend their method by lifting multivariate polynomials on curves, and generalize the “decoding on curve” algorithm from Reed-Muller codes to these lifted codes to provide correcting algorithms with success probability arbitrarily approaching 1. This gives a family of high rate locally correctable codes that is highly sound.

Abstract:The Reed-Muller codes are a family of error-correcting codes that have been widely studied in coding theory. In 2020, Wei Yan and Sian-Jheng Lin introduced a variant of Reed-Muller codes so called symmetric Reed-Muller codes. We investigate linear maps of the automorphism group of symmetric Reed-Muller codes and show that the set of these linear maps forms a subgroup of the general linear group, which is the automorphism group of punctured Reed-Muller codes. We provide a method to determine all the automorphisms in this subgroup explicitly for some special cases.

Abstract:MDS codes have diverse practical applications in communication systems, data storage, and quantum codes due to their algebraic properties and optimal error-correcting capability. In this paper, we focus on a class of linear codes and establish some sufficient and necessary conditions for them being MDS. Notably, these codes differ from Reed-Solomon codes up to monomial equivalence. Additionally, we also explore the cases in which these codes are almost MDS or near MDS. Applying our main results, we determine the covering radii and deep holes of the dual codes associated with specific Roth-Lempel codes and discover an infinite family of (almost) optimally extendable codes with dimension three.

Abstract:Reed-Muller codes are among the most important classes of locally correctable codes. Currently local decoding of Reed-Muller codes is based on decoding on lines or quadratic curves to recover one single coordinate. This decoding algorithm might be more expensive, i.e., require higher query complexity. In this paper, we focus on Reed-Muller codes with usual parameter regime, namely, the total degree of evaluation polynomials is d = Theta(q), where q is the code alphabet size (in fact, d can be as big as q/4 in our setting). By introducing a novel variation of codex, i.e., interleaved codex (the concept of codex has been used for arithmetic secret sharing), we are able to locally recover arbitrarily large number k of coordinates of a Reed-Muller code simultaneously with error probability exp(-Omega(k)) at the cost of querying merely O(q(2)k) coordinates. It turns out that our local decoding of Reed-Muller codes shows (perhaps surprisingly) that accessing k locations is in fact cheaper than repeating the procedure for accessing a single location for k times. Precisely speaking, to get the same success probability by repeating the local decoding algorithm of a single coordinate, one has to query Omega(qk(2)) coordinates. Thus, the query complexity of our local decoding is smaller for k = Omega (q). If we impose the same query complexity constraint on both algorithm, our local decoding algorithm yields smaller error probability when k = Omega (q(q)). In addition, our local decoding is efficient, i.e., the decoding complexity is Poly(k, q). Construction of an interleaved codex is based on concatenation of a codex with a multiplication friendly pair, while the main tool to realize codex is based on algebraic function fields (or more precisely, algebraic geometry codes).

Abstract:Locally decodable codes and locally correctable codes (LCCs) have several important applications, such as private information retrieval, secure multiparty computation, and circuit lower bounds. Three major parameters are considered in LCCs: query complexity, message length, and codeword length. The most familiar LCCs in the regime of low query complexity are the generalized Reed–Muller (GRM) codes. However, it has not previously been determined whether there exist codes that have shorter codeword lengths than GRM codes with the same query complexity and message length. Abstract:In this work, we propose two new types of codes with locality, namely, locally maximal recoverable (LMR) codes and -maximally recoverable ( -MR) codes. The LMR codes are a subclass of codes with -locality such that they can correct h additional erasures in any one local set, in addition to having -locality. These codes are a restricted case of maximally recoverable (MR) codes, which enable recovery from all information-theoretically correctable erasure patterns in a local set. The -MR codes are a subclass of LMR codes which can also handle erasures from any coordinate positions. We give constructions for both of these families of codes. We also study the LMR codes that satisfy the complementary dual property. It is well known that codes with this property are capable of safeguarding communication systems against fault injection attacks. We give a construction of distance-optimal cyclic LMR codes that satisfy the complementary dual property.

Abstract:Both linear complementary dual (LCD) codes and maximum distance separable (MDS) codes have good algebraic structures, and they have interesting practical applications such as communication systems, data storage, quantum codes, and so on. So far, most of LCD MDS codes have been constructed by employing generalized Reed-Solomon codes. In this paper we construct some classes of new Euclidean LCD MDS codes and Hermitian LCD MDS codes which are not monomially equivalent to Reed-Solomon codes, called LCD MDS codes of non-Reed- Solomon type. Our method is based on the constructions of Beelen et al. (2017) and Roth and Lempel (1989). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first paper on the construction of LCD MDS codes of non-Reed-Solomon type; any LCD MDS code of non- Reed-Solomon type constructed by our method is not monomially equivalent to any LCD code constructed by the method of Carlet et al. (2018).

Abstract:A linear code is called an MDS self-dual code if it is both an MDS code and a self-dual code with respect to the Euclidean inner product. The parameters of such codes are completely determined by the code length. In this paper, we consider new constructions of MDS self-dual codes via generalized Reed-Solomon (GRS) codes and their extended codes. The critical idea of our constructions is to choose suitable evaluation points such that the corresponding (extended) GRS codes are self-dual. The evaluation set of our constructions is consists of a subgroup of finite fields and its cosets in a bigger subgroup. Four new families of MDS self-dual codes are obtained and they have better parameters than previous results in certain region. Moreover, by the Mobius action over finite fields, we give a systematic way to construct self-dual GRS codes with different evaluation points provided any known self-dual GRS codes. Specially, we prove that all the self-dual extended GRS codes over $\mathbb{F}_{q}$ with length $n< q+1$ can be constructed from GRS codes with the same parameters.

Abstract:Long quantum codes using projective Reed-Muller codes are constructed. Projective Reed-Muller codes are evaluation codes obtained by evaluating homogeneous polynomials at the projective space. We obtain asymmetric and symmetric quantum codes by using the CSS construction and the Hermitian construction, respectively. We provide entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes from projective Reed-Muller codes with flexible amounts of entanglement by considering equivalent codes. Moreover, we also construct quantum codes from subfield subcodes of projective Reed-Muller codes.

Abstract:The separating redundancy is an important property in the analysis of the error-and-erasure decoding of a linear block code. In this work, we investigate the separating redundancy of the duals of first-order generalized Reed-Muller (GRM) codes, a class of nonbinary linear block codes that have nice algebraic properties. The dual of a first-order GRM code can be specified by two positive integers m and q and denoted by R (m, q), where q is the power of a prime number and q not equal 2. We determine the first separating redundancy value of R (m, q) for any m and q. We also determine the second separating redundancy values of R (m, q) for any q and m = 1 and 2. For m >= 3, we set up a binary integer linear programming problem, the optimum of which gives a lower bound on the second separating redundancy of R (m, q).

With this knowledge, we can construct symmetric and asymmetric entanglement-assisted quantum error-correcting codes, which in many cases have new or better parameters than the ones available in the literature.

Abstract:In this article, a hybrid decoding algorithm for Reed–Muller codes is presented. Unlike the conventional algorithm, the presented algorithm ends recursive decomposition when [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] appeared. A simplified maximum-likelihood algorithm based on fast Hadamard transform is also exploited to decode the systematic code through its special structure. As a result, the presented hybrid decoding algorithm reduces the number of floating-point multiplications significantly as compared with the conventional algorithms. In addition, the new algorithm has better error performance than the conventional ones.

Abstract:Reed-Muller codes are some of the oldest and most widely studied error-correcting codes, of interest for both their algebraic structure as well as their many algorithmic properties. A recent beautiful result of Saptharishi, Shpilka and Volk showed that for binary Reed-Muller codes of length $n$ and distance $d = O(1)$, one can correct $\operatorname{polylog}(n)$ random errors in $\operatorname{poly}(n)$ time (which is well beyond the worst-case error tolerance of $O(1)$). In this paper, we consider the problem of `syndrome decoding' Reed-Muller codes from random errors. More specifically, given the $\operatorname{polylog}(n)$-bit long syndrome vector of a codeword corrupted in $\operatorname{polylog}(n)$ random coordinates, we would like to compute the locations of the codeword corruptions. This problem turns out to be equivalent to a basic question about computing tensor decomposition of random low-rank tensors over finite fields. Our main result is that syndrome decoding of Reed-Muller codes (and the equivalent tensor decomposition problem) can be solved efficiently, i.e., in $\operatorname{polylog}(n)$ time. We give two algorithms for this problem: 1. The first algorithm is a finite field variant of a classical algorithm for tensor decomposition over real numbers due to Jennrich. This also gives an alternate proof for the main result of Saptharishi et al. 2. The second algorithm is obtained by implementing the steps of the Berlekamp-Welch-style decoding algorithm of Saptharishi et al. in sublinear-time. The main new ingredient is an algorithm for solving certain kinds of systems of polynomial equations.

Codes with Locality for Two Erasures

Abstract:In this paper, we study codes with locality that can recover from two erasures via a sequence of two local, parity-check computations. By a local parity-check computation, we mean recovery via a single parity-check equation associated to small Hamming weight. Earlier approaches considered recovery in parallel; the sequential approach allows us to potentially construct codes with improved minimum distance. These codes, which we refer to as locally 2-reconstructible codes, are a natural generalization along one direction, of codes with all-symbol locality introduced by Gopalan \textit{et al}, in which recovery from a single erasure is considered. By studying the Generalized Hamming Weights of the dual code, we derive upper bounds on the minimum distance of locally 2-reconstructible codes and provide constructions for a family of codes based on Turán graphs, that are optimal with respect to this bound. The minimum distance bound derived here is universal in the sense that no code which permits all-symbol local recovery from $2$ erasures can have larger minimum distance regardless of approach adopted. Our approach also leads to a new bound on the minimum distance of codes with all-symbol locality for the single-erasure case.

Abstract:Self-dual maximum distance separable codes (self-dual MDS codes) and self-dual near MDS codes are very important in coding theory and practice. Thus, it is interesting to construct self-dual MDS or self-dual near MDS codes. In this paper, we not only give check matrices of dual codes of twisted generalized Reed-Solomon codes (TGRS codes) but also present the efficient and necessary condition of self-dual TGRS codes. Moreover, we construct several classes of self-dual MDS or self-dual near MDS codes from TGRS codes.

Abstract:In this paper we define and study a family of codes which come close to be MRD codes, so we call them AMRD codes (almost MRD). An AMRD code is a code with rank defect equal to 1. AMRD codes whose duals are AMRD are called dually AMRD. Dually AMRD codes are the closest to the MRD codes given that both they and their dual codes are almost optimal. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the codes to be dually AMRD are given. Furthermore we show that dually AMRD codes and codes of rank defect one and maximum 2-generalized weight coincide when the size of the matrix divides the dimension.

High rate locally-correctable and locally-testable codes with sub-polynomial query complexity

Abstract:In this work, we construct the first locally-correctable codes (LCCs), and locally-testable codes (LTCs) with constant rate, constant relative distance, and sub-polynomial query complexity. Specifically, we show that there exist binary LCCs and LTCs with block length $n$, constant rate (which can even be taken arbitrarily close to 1), constant relative distance, and query complexity $\exp(\tilde{O}(\sqrt{\log n}))$. Previously such codes were known to exist only with $\Omega(n^{\beta})$ query complexity (for constant $\beta > 0$), and there were several, quite different, constructions known. Our codes are based on a general distance-amplification method of Alon and Luby~\cite{AL96_codes}. We show that this method interacts well with local correctors and testers, and obtain our main results by applying it to suitably constructed LCCs and LTCs in the non-standard regime of \emph{sub-constant relative distance}. Along the way, we also construct LCCs and LTCs over large alphabets, with the same query complexity $\exp(\tilde{O}(\sqrt{\log n}))$, which additionally have the property of approaching the Singleton bound: they have almost the best-possible relationship between their rate and distance. This has the surprising consequence that asking for a large alphabet error-correcting code to further be an LCC or LTC with $\exp(\tilde{O}(\sqrt{\log n}))$ query complexity does not require any sacrifice in terms of rate and distance! Such a result was previously not known for any $o(n)$ query complexity. Our results on LCCs also immediately give locally-decodable codes (LDCs) with the same parameters.
