Abstract:Borosilicate glass has a wide range of applications in the industries related to radiation, especially vitrification of high-level radioactive waste (HLW) due to its excellent performance. In this work, a series of borosilicate glasses with different compositions were fabricated. The densities of the glasses were measured using the Archimedes' method. Nano-indentation tests of these glass samples were also performed. Both the hardness and Young's modulus increased significantly with R (the molar ratio of [Na2O]/[B2O3]). The structural evolution of borosilicate glasses was characterized by infrared and Raman spectroscopy. The results indicated that both [BO4] and Si-O-Si units gradually increased with R value, while [BO3] structures in glasses decreased. When R value is higher than 0.35, the boron structure changed dramatically, which corresponded to the great changes in densities, hardness and Young's modulus. The variations of hardness and Young's modulus might be attributed to the transformation of [BO3] into [BO4] and the increase of Si-O-Si.
