Abstract:The service life and service quality of transportation infrastructures are crucial for the regular function and public safety of transportation systems. Thus, the intelligent and accurate evaluation, prediction, and analysis of transportation infrastructure service conditions have always been hot topics for transportation engineers, where such problems are sometimes hard to be solved using traditional approaches, considering different factors including complex traffic conditions, severe environmental conditions, etc. In recent years, intelligent technologies, including advanced sensors, novel artificial intelligent approaches (deep learning, etc.), the IoT-based monitoring and analysis platform, auto piloting, green energy, synergistic technologies, and systems integrating both traffic and infrastructures monitoring, have emerged as powerful tools in transportation engineering area. These efforts have greatly advanced the service convenience of public transportation, prolonged the service life of transportation infrastructures, and improved the efficiency and safety of transportation systems.

Abstract:Diverse strategies have been proposed and implemented to relieve increasingly serious urban transportation problems. How to evaluate and optimize combined strategies to increase sustainability and improve efficiency of multimodal transportation systems is still a great challenge. This paper proposes a simulation-based systematic framework for sustainable transportation systems evaluation and optimization. Simulation-based optimization (SBO) is incorporated to seek an optimal combination of transportation planning and operations strategies, e.g. congestion pricing for private cars, bus and rail fares, to minimize generalized costs of multimodal traveling in a heuristic way. Applications in a small network of Tianjin Eco-city with multimodal travelers demonstrate the feasibility and applicability of the SBO approach in sustainable transportation systems evaluation and optimization. The objective is to reduce multimodal travel costs subject to a minimum mode share of green transportation. The SBO process also validates that the efficiency of each strategy may be influenced by the strengths of other strategies.

Abstract:In this paper, two parallel worldwide tends of transportation systems are pointed out: Integrated Transportation System, Intelligent Transport System. The necessity of Integrated Transportation System is discussed. The connotation of Integrated Transportation System should be understood as follows: for optimizing of transportation resource, for integrating of travel demand management, and for including of total processes of transportation systems. The extension of Integrated Transportation System is presented. The paper focuses on the two problems: the relationship between Integrated Transportation System and ITS, the relationship between ITS and Traffic Engineering. The perspective which the non - technical factors should be separated from ITS is presented.

Abstract:This paper presents firstly that the trend of transportation systems is not only the ITS but also integrated transportation systems. The new viewpoint is dissertated on three aspects. Firstly, considering of the category the ITS belonging to, the passage analyzes the status of the ITS. Secondly, thinking about the causes of the traffic problems, the paper also takes the effect range of ITS into account. At last, taking the traffic control and traffic inducement for example, the article shows that the traffic system must be integrated. And then, the information problem of the ITS is discussed from three points, that is the relationship between information and intelligence, the problem about quantity and quality of information, and the need of the intelligence by the development of IT. Afterwards, through the examples of 7 aspects, the ignorance of the complexity of traffic systems is explained. Finally, the necessity of using the methodology of system science to study on traffic system is raised.

Abstract:The increasing population in cities induces a high travel demand. Unfortunately, due to the limited capacity of urban transport networks, this increasing demand for travel raises various problems and issues including congestion, energy, environmental impact, safety and security. Building new infrastructure is not a sustainable solution due to increasingly tight fiscal, physical and environmental constraints. A sustainable solution for mitigating urban congestion and other traffic-related problems calls for an understanding of urban traffic congestion characteristics and effective management of existing infrastructure through appropriate planning and control measures. Recent emerging technologies of connected and automated vehicles, vehicle-to-infrastructure, vehicle-to-everything environments and big data have made it easier and cheaper to collect, store, analyze, use, and disseminate multi-source data. Connected environments and vehicle automation technologies also make it more flexible for implementing real-time management and control measures for improving system performance. The scope for papers in this special issue explores the methodological and technological advancements in understanding and managing urban traffic congestion. The eight research papers which are included in this issue are summarized below.

Abstract:During the last few years, information technology and transportation industries, along with automotive manufacturers and academia, are focusing on leveraging intelligent transportation systems (ITS) to improve services related to driver experience, connected cars, Internet data plans for vehicles, traffic infrastructure, urban transportation systems, traffic collaborative management, road traffic accidents analysis, road traffic flow prediction, public transportation service plan, personal travel route plans, and the development of an effective ecosystem for vehicles, drivers, traffic controllers, city planners, and transportation applications. Moreover, the emerging technologies of the Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing have provided unprecedented opportunities for the development and realization of innovative intelligent transportation systems where sensors and mobile devices can gather information and cloud computing, allowing knowledge discovery, information sharing, and supported decision making. However, the development of such data-driven ITS requires the integration, processing, and analysis of plentiful information obtained from millions of vehicles, traffic infrastructures, smartphones, and other collaborative systems like weather stations and road safety and early warning systems. The huge amount of data generated by ITS devices is only of value if utilized in data analytics for decision-making such as accident prevention and detection, controlling road risks, reducing traffic carbon emissions, and other applications which bring big data analytics into the picture.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the current research status of three fields,i.e.,traffic flow chaos,self-organization of transportation system,and network complexity.Four difficulties were summed up:(i) the lack of theoretical basis for systemic depiction and integrated depiction procedures;(ii) the need of large amount of data;(iii) the incomparable measure by the current complexity depiction methods;(iv) the cognition about the complexity of transportation system still sticks in the shallow stage,and how to manage and control the system according to its complexity characteristics is still blank.Final-ly,the further research directions are proposed.

Abstract:Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) have been developed rapidly over the last few decades because of global urbanization and industrialization. ITS involve a wide range of different technologies and applications such as automatic road enforcement, dynamic traffic light sequence, and as a result, a significant number of scientific papers have been published in the field of ITS. In this paper, we present a useful insight into the development of ITS area by systematically analyzing the publications over the period of 20 years. First, we identify the most cited papers and most impactful authors in the field. Second, in the aspect of topic analysis, we identify some active keywords. To do so, we develop a keyword co-occurrence network to find topics in the ITS field. Finally, for the collaboration pattern analysis, we construct two networks to interpret collaboration patterns, including a co-authorship network, and an author co-keyword network to show the development and research tendency of ITS. Some most interesting findings from our investigation include the following: 1) Besides the USA, China and Europe have begun to play an increasingly significant role in this field and 2) GPS, traffic control, and road safety show an upward trend from the analysis of the evolution of ITS research topics, given the rise of new research areas such as autonomous vehicles. Our first-hand investigation and analysis of the literature provides a valuable reference to research activities in the development of ITS field and presents worthy insights on the current status and future technical trends.

Abstract:As the intelligent transportation system constructions at home are increasingly perfect, the originally open network system of urban road traffic is gradually changed into a virtual closed controlled network, in which the traffic processes and states can be detected, measured, and controlled. But the traditional open system idea based theories about the balance between supply and demand of urban traffic system, as well as the corresponding congestion control theories and methods, are difficult to match effectively with current field applications. How to identify urban traffic network equilibrium principle under the condition of intelligent transportation systems and set up the corresponding theory and method of congestion control becomes the crucial issues for modern urban traffic management and smart city construction. This paper summarizes the development states of intelligent traffic management and control system in Chinese cities, put forwards the theoretical concept for traffic congestion control of urban road network with intelligent transportation systems, which establishes a virtual closed spatio-temporal system by the “data perimeter or boundary” expressed as the discrete detection points of traffic flow-in-and-out data in the range of controlled urban road network, implements pinning control mixed with active control in combination with macroscopic fundamental diagram (MFD) theory and the perimeter and boundary flow control methods, based on the regional traffic controllability. And the technical route and method system to realize this theoretical concept is further designed.

Abstract:The increasing penetration of electric vehicles is tightly coupling the operation of power and transportation systems. The representation of the dynamics of network flows in response to real-time information and control strategies is a problem of considerable practical significance. However, most of work considers static network models that are only suitable for long-term planning horizons. This paper seeks to develop an integrated modeling framework for the real-time analysis and operation of the coupled systems. In particular, a dynamic traffic assignment model is exploited to account for the time-varying travel demand and flow dynamics. An accelerated diagonalization algorithm is proposed to compute the traffic flows in an efficient manner. Moreover, we show that the equilibrium flow pattern of the coupled systems can be characterized by a fixed-point problem, thus motivating a decentralized approach to attain the flow solutions. Numerical studies demonstrate both the spatial and temporal interconnections between the power and traffic flows. The comparison of network flow solutions based on the dynamic, semi-dynamic and static transportation network models is presented.

Abstract:There has been an increasing level of demand for faster, safer and greener transportation systems with higher levels of capacity and convenience, though the implementation of transportation systems overall is often restricted by geographical limitations, presenting a challenge to scientists and engineers in the field. However, we have been witnessing the evolution of the transportation systems over the last few decades, and at present we are facing a new era of intelligent transportation systems (ITS) empowered by artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. There have been classification, deep learning, and reinforcement learning techniques, to name a few, which collectively have enabled almost all technical elements of the ITS. For example, autonomous vehicle technologies are now mature enough to introduce self-driving cars, taxis, buses, and trucks on the roads and streets; traffic signals are controlled by AI-based systems for far more enhanced traffic efficiency; and machine learning based on big data is improving the operational performance of transportation systems to the next level of safety, efficiency, and sustainability.

Abstract:Congested road and air networks, coupled with the idea that transport systems should be balanced, have spawned the field of intercity intermodal passenger transport which is based on travel across connected networks that is as seamless as possible. There is a very large number of attributes that affect the objective and subjective quality of travel. Intercity public transport planning therefore requires an excellent understanding of connections between different services and how the quality of these connections affects passengers, operators and the society at large. This article reviews the vast literature over the last 20 years from Europe, North America and Asia that is related to intercity travel, the connectivity of transport and cooperation between different modes of transport and presents a simple yet powerful way to perceive connected transport systems. The article then reviews planning practice at a variety of states worldwide, and suggests a set of focus areas of research or gaps that once filled, the authors expect, will allow further development of connected intercity passenger travel.

Abstract:With the growth of national economic strength, urban modernization has become an indispensable part. Among them, urban road traffic congestion has become the main problem affecting work and traffic. Traffic pressure promotes the massive use of Internet of Things and other technologies in the transportation system. The integration of computer, Internet of Things and transportation system forms a new intelligent transportation concept. With the advent of intelligent information society, the application of intelligent transportation is imminent. In view of the shortcomings of urban intelligent transportation, this paper uses Internet of Things technology and big data technology to study it. Firstly, it analyzes the function and value of IoT intelligent transportation, analyzes the system components from the construction principle, and makes full use of intelligent technology to improve the transportation system. Secondly, the optimal path algorithm is proposed in the IoT urban intelligent transportation system model. The advantages and disadvantages of genetic algorithm and heuristic algorithm are analyzed, and ant colony algorithm is used for further optimization. In order to verify the feasibility of the intelligent transportation system, technologies such as big data edge computing are also used to comprehensively evaluate and study the use of the system. Finally, we analyze the results of the practical application of the intelligent transportation system under the Internet of Things technology. The research results show that the urban intelligent transportation system, supported by the Internet of Things technology, can realize the dynamic planning of the optimal route, help the people to improve their driving experience in the high safety and intellectualization, and greatly avoid a series of problems caused by congestion.
