Abstract:Developing highly efficient and durable alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts composed of earth-abundant materials is crucial for large-scale electrochemical hydrogen production. Herein, interfacial chemistry engineering is employed to decouple the restriction of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy. And low valence state Niδ+ (δ < 1) is proposed as an efficient water-dissociation promoter based on our dual-descriptor method. Moreover, metallic and intrinsic HER-active Ni is introduced and a highly conductive edge-enriched Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni hybrid electrocatalyst is constructed. DFT calculations and microkinetics analysis demonstrate that the Ni site and Ni0.2Mo0.8N site have favorable hydroxyl and hydrogen species adsorption energetics, respectively, which can cooperate synergistically towards alkaline hydrogen evolution. The resulting electrocatalyst shows excellent HER electrocatalytic performance with an overpotential of about 70 mV at 300 mA cm−2 and a Tafel slope of 33 mV dec−1. It also offers outstanding operational stability at large current densities up to 200 mA cm−2. Further theoretical calculations suggest a tip-enhanced-like local electric field around the topmost Ni nanoparticles, leading to increased K-ion concentration in the inner Helmholtz plane. The HER kinetics and surface reactant density can be simultaneously improved by this hierarchical Ni0.2Mo0.8N/Ni electrocatalyst. This study might open up new avenues of reasonable design of hierarchical structures for superior electrocatalysts.
Facile Synthesis of PdCuRu Porous Nanoplates as Highly Efficient Electrocatalysts for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Medium

Abstract:Ru is a key component of electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), especially in alkaline media. However, the catalytic activity and durability of Ru-based HER electrocatalysts are still far from satisfactory. Here we report a solvothermal approach for the synthesis of PdCuRu porous nanoplates with different Ru compositions by using Pd nanoplates as the seeds. The PdCuRu porous nanoplates were formed through underpotential deposition (UPD) of Cu on Pd, followed by alloying Cu with Pd through interdiffusion and galvanic replacement between Cu atoms and Ru precursor simultaneously. When evaluated as HER electrocatalysts, the PdCuRu porous nanoplates exhibited excellent catalytic activity and durability. Of them, the Pd24Cu29Ru47/C achieved the lowest overpotential (40.7 mV) and smallest Tafel slope (37.5 mV dec(-1)) in an alkaline solution (much better than commercial Pt/C). In addition, the Pd24Cu29Ru47/C only lost 17% of its current density during a stability test for 10 h, while commercial Pt/C had a 59.5% drop under the same conditions. We believe that the electron coupling between three metals, unique porous structure, and strong capability of Ru for water dissociation are responsible for such an enhancement in HER performance.
Dual-Descriptor Tailoring: the Hydroxyl Adsorption Energy-Dependent Hydrogen Evolution Kinetics of High-Valance State Doped Ni3N in Alkaline Media

Abstract:The requirement of both water discharge and hydrogen adsorption free energy restricts the activity of most electrocatalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in alkaline medium. Herein, the dual-descriptor-guided design without time-consuming transition-state calculations is proposed. Theory-driven precise surface reactivity tailoring of Ni3N is demonstrated toward the balance of hydrogen and hydroxyl species adsorption energetics. The results reveal that the rate-determining step of the Ni3N catalyst mainly originates from the strong hydrogen adsorption. By higher valance-state Mo, W, and V doping, the electronic structure of Ni3N is modulated, leading to lower surface reactivity and favorable hydrogen adsorption/desorption thermodynamics. Notably, Mo-doped Ni3N exhibits optimal hydroxyl adsorption energy and fast water discharge kinetics, while W doping leads to hydroxyl poisoning and sluggish kinetics of water discharge. The experimental investigations confirm the theoretical prediction, and Mo-Ni3N realizes about 12-fold, 9-fold, and 3-fold enhancement in alkaline HER activity compared to pure Ni3N, W-Ni3N, and V-Ni3N, respectively. This dual-descriptor-guided design opens up opportunities for developing superior alkaline HER electrocatalysts.
An Ultrafine Platinum-Cobalt Alloy Decorated Cobalt Nanowire Array with Superb Activity Toward Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution

Abstract:It is highly desired to design and develop highly efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reactions. Herein, we report the development of ultrafine PtCo alloy nanoparticle decorated one-dimensional Co nanowires grown on Ti mesh (PtCo-Co/TiM). Owing to its favorable composition and structure, the PtCo-Co/TiM can deliver an ultrahigh current density of 46.5 mA cm(-2) at an overpotential of 70 mV in 1.0 M KOH, superior to recently reported Pt-based electrocatalysts. This catalyst also provides excellent long-term electrochemical durability with its catalytic activity being maintained for at least 50 h.

Abstract:Because nickel-sulfide based electrode materials are regarded as appealing hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) electrocatalysts, various strategies have been designed to enhance their HER activity. Herein, we adopt a simple electrodeposition method to synthesize amorphous nickel sulfide electrocatalysts. Through altering the added amounts of electroplating bath consisting of NiCl2 and thiourea (TU), the HER electrocatalytic activity in alkaline electrolyte of these nickel sulfides can be optimized, and it exhibits a low overpotential of 130 mV at a current density of -10 mA cm(-2), a small Tafel slope of 91 mV dec(-1), and high electrochemical stability. The experimental analysis and density functional theory calculations suggest that the excellent electrochemical activity is ascribed to the coordination regulation of Ni nanostructures decorated with sulfur and oxygen anions. These findings demonstrate a simple and effective method to explore high efficiency electrocatalysts to HER.
Facile Synthesis of Well-Dispersed Ni2P on N-Doped Nanomesh Carbon Matrix as a High-Efficiency Electrocatalyst for Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Abstract:The development of non-noble metal hydrogen evolution catalysts that can replace Pt is crucial for efficient hydrogen production. Herein, we develop a type of well-dispersed Ni2P on N-doped nanomesh carbon (NC) electrocatalyst by a facile pyrolysis method, which shows excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalytic performance. It is rather remarkable that the overpotential of Ni2P/NC prepared under optimal proportion is 108 mV at 10 mA·cm−2 current density in 1 M KOH solution with the tafel slope of 67.3 mV·dec−1, the catalytic activity has no significant attenuation after 1000 cycles of cyclic voltammetry (CV)method. The hydrogen evolution performance of the electrocatalytic is better than most similar catalysts in alkaline media. The unique mesh structure of the carbon component in the catalyst facilitates the exposure of the active site and reduces the impedance, which improves the efficiency of electron transport as well as ensuring the stability of the hydrogen evolution reaction. In addition, we prove that nitrogen doping and pore structure are also important factors affecting catalytic activity by control experiments. Our results show that N-doped nanomesh carbon, as an efficient support, combined with Ni2P nanoparticles is of great significance for the development of efficient hydrogen evolution electrodes.

Achieving Efficient Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction over a Ni5 P4 Catalyst Incorporating Single-Atomic Ru Sites.

Abstract:Developing efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline water electrolysis is central to substantial progress of alkaline hydrogen production. Herein, a Ni5 P4 electrocatalyst incorporating single-atom Ru (Ni5 P4 -Ru) is synthesized through the filling of Ru3+ species into the metal vacancies of nickel hydroxides and subsequent phosphorization treatment. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, X-ray-based measurements, and electron microscopy observations confirm the strong interaction between the nickel-vacancy defect and Ru cation, resulting in more than 3.83 wt% single-atom Ru incorporation in the obtained Ni5 P4 -Ru. The Ni5 P4 -Ru as an alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction catalyst achieves low onset potential of 17 mV and an overpotential of 54 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 together with a small Tafel slope of 52.0 mV decade-1 and long-term stability. Further spectroscopy analyses combined with density functional theory calculations reveal that the doped Ru sites can cause localized structure polarization, which brings the low energy barrier for water dissociation on Ru site and the optimized hydrogen adsorption free energy on the interstitial site, well rationalizing the experimental reactivity.
P‐Doping Modulated RuIr Nanoparticles Anchored on Co/N/C Catalysts with Improved Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Activity and Stability

Abstract:RuIr/Co(SA)NC‐P catalyst with RuIr alloy nanoparticles and P‐doping co‐existing on the Co/N/C catalyst, is presented as an efficient alkaline HER electrocatalyst. The CoNx sites promote the dissociation of adsorbed water molecules, and the generated Had is rapidly transferred to the RuIr alloy and subsequently releases H2 via the Tafel process. Meanwhile, the weakened Ru‐OH binding energy prevents the Ru sites from being poisoned by OHad. Additionally, P‐doping mitigates the metal dissolution/agglomeration of RuIr nanoparticles, enhancing their stability performance. Achieving efficient and stable hydrogen evolution reactions in alkaline conditions is crucial for hydrogen production. In this study, a RuIr/Co(SA)NC‐P catalyst featuring RuIr alloys alongside P‐doping and CoNx sites is developed. RuIr alloying optimizes the electronic structure between Ru and Ir, promoting electron transfer from Ru to Ir. P‐doping further modulates the electronic properties of RuIr alloys, optimizing hydrogen binding energy and weakening Ru─OH binding energy, facilitating rapid H2 generation and OHad transfer. Meanwhile, CoNx promotes water dissociation, providing a fast proton delivery path for RuIr alloys. The catalyst exhibits enhanced HER activity with a low overpotential of 20 mV at 10 mA cm−2, a Tafel slope of 20.4 mV dec−1, and a turnover frequency of 19.5 H2 s−1 at 150 mV overpotential. Moreover, catalyst stability is improved 8 times by mitigating RuIr alloy dissolution/agglomeration via P‐doping. This work introduces a promising approach for developing efficient and stable HER electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Design and construction of efficient and robust electrocatalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are of great importance for renewable energy technologies, but challenge remains for the large-scale commercial application. The good stability and large electrochemical active area of nanomaterials have been widely studied in the field of energy storage and conversion. Regulating the d band electronic structure has been considered as a powerful approach to boost the HER activity. Herein, an efficient electrocatalyst comprising Ni nanoparticles anchored on the N-doped carbon matrix derived from a fullerene/nickel tetraphenylporphyrin (C60/NiTPP) nanoflower assembly was fabricated successfully. The as-synthesized Ni(TPP)/NC exhibited promising HER activity under alkaline condition. To deliver a current density of 10 mA cm–2, it required an overpotential of 114 mV along with a nearly 100% Faradaic efficiency. Both experimental and density functional theory calculation results revealed that the pyrrolic N could modulate the 3d band center of Ni sites in Ni(TPP)/NC, which facilitate the adsorption of water molecules and desorption of hydrogen intermediates, leading to the reduced kinetic energy barrier and enhanced electrocatalytic HER activity. This work would provide useful guidance for designing and developing efficient electrocatalysts for hydrogen production.

Abstract:Among efficient electrocatalysts used for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) from electrocatalytic water splitting, the nickel-based sulfides exhibit promising applications via effective heteroatom doping strategy. Herein, we deeply investigate the fundamental mechanism of the Cu doping towards the HER performance improvement of NiS2 catalyst. Firstly, based on the density functional theory calculations, the Cu doping can efficiently modulate the electronic structure of NiS2, thereby optimizing the adsorption free energies of hydrogen and H2O, and enhancing the kinetics of H2O dissociation. Secondly, we prepare the Cu-doped NiS2 nanosheet arrays on carbon fiber paper (Cu–NiS2/CFP), exhibiting superior alkaline HER performances compared with NiS2 nanosheet arrays on CFP (NiS2/CFP). Specifically, Cu–NiS2/CFP shows a low HER overpotential of 75 mV at the cathodic current density of 10 mA/cm2 in 1 M KOH. Both aspects of theory calculations and experiments together certify the Cu doping can efficiently modulate NiS2 catalyst to improve alkaline HER performances.

Abstract:Developing and synthesizing the economical electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is essential for the large-scale production of hydrogen source. Although NiCoS-based electrocatalysts have attracted great attention, deep insight into the mechanism of boosted HER activities still needs to be further investigated, especially based on the doped Ni-based electrocatalyst. Herein, we synthesized the cobalt and sulfur co-doped nickel electrocatalysts (NCS) and the HER performance is evaluated in alkaline medium. The results show that the NCS with optimized component has a boosted HER activity compared to Ni, NiCo, and NiS, which exhibits the lower overpotential of 45.8 mV at 10 mA·cm −2 and Tafel slope of 83.4 mV·dec -1 . The co-introduced Co and S are conductive to increase the reactive sites, charge transfer capacity and aerophobic property. The theoretical calculation results reveal that the doped S can induce electron localization at the Ni and Co atoms bonded to S atom. Moreover, we also confirm that the Co sites and Ni sites of NCS represent the reactive sites in the Volmer and Heyrovsky steps, respectively, and thereby boosting the hydrogen evolution activity. The obtained insights could provide a significant guideline for designing highly efficient electrocatalyst toward alkaline hydrogen evolution.

Abstract:Density functional theory (DFT) is used to predict the behavior of ruthenium-doped nickel cobalt alloy in the alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). According to DFT calculation, a synergistic effect at the Ru-Ni/Co interface is generated to accelerate water dissociation and optimize the adsorption-desorption energetics toward the H intermediate. However, excessive Ru introduction will lead to over-strong hydrogen adsorption on the catalyst surface, thus limiting H 2 release. As a proof of concept, we design a series of NiCoRu x /SP, among which the optimized NiCoRu 0.2 /SP electrocatalyst achieves an overpotential of 59 mV at 10 mA cm −2 , while excessive Ru incorporation (NiCoRu 0.3 /SP) diminishes the HER activity. X-ray absorption spectroscopy and other characterizations further confirm that the interface-induced electron transfer from atomic Ru to its surrounding Ni/Co, and the activity degradation caused by excessive Ru incorporation is attributed to the generation of Ru cluster that sacrifices the interface between Ru atom and Ni/Co.

Abstract:Platinum-based catalysts play an important role in electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction, which is a renewable and clean way to produce H2. Herein, we have successfully synthesized the ultrafine PtNiP NWs with diameter less than 5 nm via a simple two-step hydrothermal reaction method. Impressively, the PtNiP NWs exhibit one of the best electrocatalytic activity toward HER under alkaline conditions, which can reach current density of 500 mA cm-2 only at the -0.153 V vs RHE with Tafel slop of only 30 mV dec-1. The DFT calculation results show synergistic effect of Pt, Ni and P atoms, where Ni atoms are conducive to the adsorption of H2O and P atoms are helpful for the dissociation of H2O, significantly improving kinetic processes of hydrogen evolution reaction. This work could be instructive and meaningful to design highly efficient and stable HER catalyst in alkaline condition for practical applications.

Nanoporous cobalt-doped AlNi3/NiO architecture for high performing hydrogen evolution at high current densities

Abstract:Engineering platinum-free catalysts for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) with high activity and stability is essential for electrochemical hydrogen production. In this paper, we report the synthesis of cobalt-doped AlNi3/NiO (Co-AlNi3/NiO) electrode with three-dimensional nanoporous structure via chemical dealloying method. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that Co-AlNi3/NiO can accelerate water adsorption / dissociation and optimize adsorption-desorption energies of H* intermediates, thus improving the intrinsic HER activity. Both the introduction of Co and Al can efficiently ameliorate the electronic density around Ni sites of NiO and AlNi3, which can effectively reduce the energy barrier towards Volmer-Heyrovsky reaction and thus synergistically promote the hydrogen evolution. Benefiting from the large electrochemical active surface area, high electrical conductivity and electronic effect, the nanoporous Co-AlNi3/NiO catalyst exhibits remarkable HER activity with an overpotential of 73 mV at a current density of 10 mA cm-2 in alkaline condition, outperforming most of the reported non-precious metal catalysts. The nanoporous Co-AlNi3/NiO catalyst can operate continuously over 1000 h at high current densities with a robust stability. This work provides a new vision for the development of low-cost and efficient electrocatalysts for energy conversion applications.

Abstract:The development of an efficient and cost-effective electrocatalyst for the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction (HER) that can be widely applied in industrial settings poses a multifaceted challenge. This research involved fabricating a NiCo-LDH/Cu electrode as a self-supported catalyst for hydrogen evolution on nickel foam using a solvothermal method and constant potential electrodeposition. In comparison to the NiCu electrocatalyst produced through a single-step electrodeposition, the NiCo-LDH/Cu hydrogen evolution electrode prepared via this combined approach exhibited significant electrocatalytic performance for HER in an alkaline electrolyte. The NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode requires only an overpotential of 78.0 mV to achieve a current density of 10 mA·cm −2 in 1 M KOH. The current density required to catalyze the hydrogenation reaction is reduced by 64 % compared to pure nickel foam. This reduction accelerates the hydrogenation catalytic reaction and enhances electrochemical stability. The remarkable HER efficiency of the NiCo-LDH/Cu catalytic electrode primarily stems from the increased active surface area facilitated by the LDH structure and the synergistic impact generated during the NiCu co-deposition process. This work shows an economical and practical method for developing efficient non-precious metal catalytic electrodes.

Abstract:Developing earth-abundant and efficient catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is highly desirable. In this communication, we report the development of a Mn-doped Ni3S2 nanosheet array on Ni foam (Mn-Ni3S2/NF) as a superior and durable catalyst for alkaline hydrogen evolution. Such Mn-Ni3S2/NF demands an overpotential of 152 mV to afford 10 mA cm(-2) in 1.0 M KOH, 46 mV less than that for Ni3S2/NF. Furthermore, this catalyst also shows high long-term electrochemical durability. This work provides important guidance for exploring optimal HER catalysts.

Abstract:In this study, we meticulously prepared electrocatalysts in the form of Ru nanoclusters-decorated CoP nanowire arrays supported on carbon cloth (Ru@CoP/CC) for HER under both alkaline and acidic conditions. Ru@CoP/CC exhibited exceptional catalytic activity for hydrogen evolution, showcasing overpotentials of 48 mV and 66 mV (10 mA/cm 2 ) in acidic and alkaline media, respectively, which closes to 20% of commercial Pt/C catalysts. Moreover, they showcased outstanding durability, a crucial aspect for their practical application in hydrogen production. Furthermore, this research employed DFT computations to attain a comprehensive understanding of the electronic and structural modifications brought about by the integration of Ru nanoclusters. Ru nanoclusters could coordination environment of CoP, and then effectively accelerate the catalytic reaction. This method opens up a new way to reduce the amount of precious metals in the electrocatalyst, and is helpful to the development of high-performance HER electrocatalyst.

Abstract:Developing efficient and stable non-noble metal electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution poses a challenge for current research. Herein, a novel hierarchical hetero-electrocatalyst of Ni3S2@2D Co MOF was synthesized with cobalt metal-organic frameworks (Co-MOFs) crystallization on carbon paper (CP) and in-situ electrodeposition of Ni3S2 nanosheets. The catalyst Ni3S2@2D Co-MOF/CP exhibited an excellent hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity with a low overpotential of 140 mV and a small Tafel slope of 90.3 mV dec-1 at a current density of -10 mA cm-2. This catalyst demonstrated a lower overpotential (395 mV) than commercial Pt/C catalyst at a high current density (>130 mA cm-2). The efficient and stable HER performance of Ni3S2@2D Co-MOF/CP was attributed to nickel sulfide honeycomb nanosheets grown on two-dimensional MOF frameworks, which were conducive to charge transfer and hydrogen evolution. The electron-rich nickel sulfide surface significantly diminished H* adsorption and reduced energy barrier of H2 generation to promote HER process. This work provides a new strategy for practical preparation of efficient and stable transition metal electrocatalysts.
