Abstract:Diatomite is used as main raw material and calcined with LiOH to prepare a porous ceramic separator with lithium silicate as its main component. This diatomite ceramic separator has a developed three-dimensional pore structure and excellent thermal stability. With the increase of LiOH content, the pore size and porosity of the separator are improved, and the main components of the separator gradually change from Li2Si2O5 to Li2Si2O5-Li2SiO3 mixed phase. Lithium ions can migrate both in the separator channels and in the lithium silicate ceramic matrix, where lithium silicate acts as solid electrolyte. When the LiOH content is 30 wt%, the synergistic effect of the two ion migration modes enables the separator (DCS30 separator) to obtain maximum ionic conductivity (1.80 mS cm(-1)). The discharge specific capacity of the cell with DCS30 separator at the current density of 10 C is 45% higher than that of the cell with commercial polyolefin separator. And after 200 cycles, the cell with DCS30 separator still has a capacity retention rate of 99.9%. Therefore, the diatomite ceramic separator is very promising to be applied in the high-power lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:Using diatomite and lithium carbonate as raw materials, a porous Li 4 SiO 4 ceramic separator is prepared by sintering. The separator has an abundant and uniform three-dimensional pore structure, excellent electrolyte wettability, and thermal stability. Lithium ions are migrated through the electrolyte and uniformly distributed in the three-dimensional pores of the separator. The sintering temperature has an important influence on the composition of the ceramic separator. When the sintering temperature reaches 650 °C, pure Li 4 SiO 4 is synthesized. The large porosity and excellent electrolyte affinity provide a maximum ionic conductivity of 1.18 mS cm -1 for the LSCS650 ceramic separator. After 120 charge-discharge cycles, the lithium iron phosphate battery assembled with the LSCS650 separator has a discharge specific capacity of 128.4 mA h g -1 and a capacity retention rate of nearly 100% at a current density of 1 C. Meanwhile, at a high current density of 10 C, the cell still has a discharge capacity of 71.4 mA h g -1 . Therefore, the Li 4 SiO 4 ceramic separator has a good application prospect in high-power lithium-ion batteries.
Fabrication of Diatomite/polyethylene Terephthalate Composite Separator for Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:In this study, a composite separator was prepared by coating a diatomite/polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) mixed slurry on the polyethylene terephthalate (PET) nonwoven in order to apply to lithium-ion batteries. The effect of the mass ratio of diatomite/PVDF on the physical and electrochemical performance of the composite separators was investigated. SEM observation showed that the unique pores on the diatomite disk gradually became the main pores of the diatomite/PET composite separator with the increasing content of diatomite in the coating. As the content of diatomite in the diatomite/PET composite separator coating increased from 60 to 80 wt%, the porosity, liquid electrolyte absorption rate, and ionic conductivity gradually increased and reached a maximum (63.8%, 0.866 g cm−3, 1.43 mS cm−1, respectively) at the content of 80 wt%. The contact angle of the composite separators to the electrolyte gradually decreased as the content of diatomite increased and reached a minimum of 13.00° at 80 wt%. After heat treatment at 160 °C for 0.5 h, the composite separator with a diatomite content of 80 wt% shrank merely 1.17% that showed the outstanding thermal stability than the PP separator (39.60%). Furthermore the cells assembled with diatomite composite separators showed better cycle stability and C-rate performance at room temperature, which was related to the reduced interfacial resistance and decreased polarization voltage of the cells. Among them, the composite separator with diatomite/PVDF = 80/20 (w/w) showed the most excellent cell performance due to the unique pore structure of diatomite.

Abstract:Lithium ion conducting membranes based on porous separators are the key materials for high performance lithium ion batteries.The amphiphilic copolymers of poly(methyl methacrylate-co-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate)(P(MMA-co-DMAEMA)) were synthesized through a conventional radical polymerization.Using these copolymers as additives in casting solutions,the PVDF/P(MMA-co-DMAEMA) porous blend membranes were prepared following a typical non-solvent induced phase separation(NIPS) process.Compared with pure PVDF separator with comparable porous structure,the adoption of P(MMA-co-DMAEMA) could not only decrease the crystallinity,but also enhance the stability of entrapped liquid electrolyte.Such modified PVDF membrane should be named as "active separator",which can exhibit the characteristic of gel electrolyte by absorbing lithium salt liquid electrolyte.For separators with PVDF/P(MMA-co-DMAEMA) mass ratio in 10∶1,the liquid electrolyte uptake reached above 420wt% and ion conductivity of the membrane was 1.8× 10-3S/cm,which was acceptable for high voltage lithium ion batteries.These results primarily indicate the potential of the prepared blend separator in real application in safe and high performance lithium ion batteries.

Abstract:In this study, a novel composite separator for rechargeable hybrid aqueous batteries is successfully fabricated by coating porous expanded dickite aqueous slurry using polyacrylic latex as the binder on ES (Ethylene-Propylene Side By Side) nonwoven. The porous expanded dickite is prepared by intercalation and violent chemical reaction, forming porous structure with pore size of 0.3–1.2 μm. The porous morphology of the composite separators could be fine-tuned by varying the content of expanded dickite. The air permeability, porosity, electrolyte uptake, and ionic conductivity of the composite separators gradually improve with the increase of the content of expanded dickite. The improved performance of composite separators helps to improve battery performance, especially at high expanded dickite content. The composite separators with 90 wt.% expanded dickite provide superior cell performance owing to well-tailored pore structure, as compared to a commercialized absorbed glass mat (AGM).
Pore Structure Control of Expanded Dickite and Its Application As a Clay Coating Layer on Cross-Linked Nonwoven Fabrics for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:A composite separator with a tunable pore structure is prepared by coating a porous expanded dickite layer on a cross-linked nonwoven fabric. The expanded dickite is prepared by rapidly calcining the mixture of a dickite-urea intercalation complex and potassium chlorate (KClO3). Moreover, the ratio of the external urea outside the dickite-urea intercalation complex and KClO3 significantly determines the energy released by the reaction of urea and KClO3, and further affects the expansive degree and functional group characteristics of the dickite. When the ratio of external urea to KClO3 is 0.448, the porous expanded dickite with hydroxyl groups shows an average layer gap of 0.212 mu m. The composite separator coated with porous expanded dickite has obvious pore morphology characteristics similar to the expanded dickite, and displays a higher porosity (61.6%), electrolyte uptake (0.861 g cm(-3)), ionic conductivity (3.157 mS cm(-1)) and discharge capacity (152 mAh g(-1)) than commercial Celgard 2400. Using this composite separator, LiFePO4/Li cells exhibit an excellent rate capability and acceptable cycling stability, indicating that nonwoven coating by porous expanded dickite is a kind of the high-performance separator for lithium-ion batteries. Raspberry-like Micro-Size Polymer with High Spherical Shape-Retention Capability and Adhesion As Binder for Ceramic Separators

Abstract:Surface coating with binders and ceramic particles is one of the most effective strategies to enhance thermal stability and electrolyte wettability of polyolefin separators, yet is still challenged by the issue of hole blocking and contradiction between adhesion and thermostability of binders. Herein, a raspberry-like micro-size polymer (RMP) binder with a soft core inside and hard spheres outside was prepared through seed swelling polymerization. The micron size helps RMP binder to effectively bond separator and electrode, solving the pore blocking problem encountered with traditional liner binders. The raspberry-like structure combines softness and rigidity, ensuring both high spherical shape-retention capability and good binding strength. The ceramic separator with RMP binder shows low thermal shrinkage and high ionic conductivity, achieving high cycling stability and low impedance of the batteries. This work provides new inspiration to construct novel binders for ceramic-coated separators with long-term stability for high-performance lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Ceramic composite separator is more competitive than traditional polyolefin separator in the field of power supply for superior thermal stability and wettability of liquid electrolyte. In this study, we develop a two-steps method that modifies SiO2 with acrylamide (AM) by grafting process and prepare a functional SiO2 composite separator (PE/SiO2-AM). This kind of composite separator exhibits similar size-shrinkage (8.8%) to that of PE/SiO2 composite separator at the tested temperature, lower than 18.1% of bare PE separator, and is electrochemically stable below 4.5 V (vs. Li/Li+). In addition, the Li-symmetric cells employing PE/SiO2-AM composite separator have the lowest overpotential and an improved lithium-ion transference number of 0.44. It is demonstrated from DFT calculation that the electron-rich species of imide group is able to uniformly disperse lithium-ion flux at the interface of electrolyte/lithium anode, and contributes to lithium-ion transport process. After assembling the LiCoO2/Li half cells, the cell with PE/SiO2-AM composite separator displays better cycle performance and higher discharge capacity when compared with other separators. Therefore, functional ceramic separator would be more attractive for next-generation lithium metal battery with high energy density.

Abstract:A thin inorganic composite membrane composed of 94wt% Al2O3 and 6wt% styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) polymer binder is prepared via an aqueous solution casting process. 1wt% polyethylene glycol (PEG) is introduced into the casting suspension for the preparation of a 37µm-thick inorganic composite separator. PEG plays a key role to enhance the stability of the casting suspension to separate the thin membrane from the substrate, and to increase the porosity of the membrane. The as-prepared Al2O3/SBR separator shows a superior thermal stability under 130°C with no any shrinkage, higher electrolyte uptake/retention and ionic conductivity than the common polyethylene (PE) separator. In LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2|graphite cells, the inorganic composite separator exhibits excellent cycling stability and good rate performance.

Abstract:Lithium metal anode is the ultimate choice to obtain next-generation high-energy-density lithium batteries, while the dendritic lithium growth owing to the unstable lithium anode/electrolyte interface largely limits its practical application. Separator is an important component in batteries and separator engineering is believed to be a tractable and effective way to address the above issue. Separators can play the role of ion redistributors to guide the transport of lithium ions and regulate the uniform electrodeposition of Li. The electrolyte wettability, thermal shrinkage resistance, and mechanical strength are of importance for separators. Here, clay-originated two-dimensional (2D) holey amorphous silica nanosheets (ASN) to develop a low-cost and eco-friendly inorganic separator is directly adopted. The ASN-based separator has higher porosity, better electrolyte wettability, much higher thermal resistance, larger lithium transference number, and ionic conductivity compared with commercial separator. The large amounts of holes and rich surface oxygen groups on the ASN guide the uniform distribution of lithium-ion flux. Consequently, the Li//Li cell with this separator shows stable lithium plating/stripping, and the corresponding Li//LiFePO<sub>4</sub> , Li//LiCoO<sub>2,</sub> and Li//NCM523 full cells also show high capacity, excellent rate performance, and outstanding cycling stability, which is much superior to that using the commercial separator.

Abstract:The safety of lithium ion batteries is correlated closely to the mechanical property and thermal stability of separators. The polymer/ceramic particle composite separators are widely investigated for quasi-solid gel separators of lithium ion batteries, but the nonuniform dispersion of ceramic particles limits their performance. In this study, ball-milled Al-doped Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 suspension is incorporated into poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) gel to prepare a highly uniform quasi-solid composite separator. The results show that adding only 4.29 wt% Li6.75La3Zr1.75Ta0.25O12 into PVDF-HFP increases ductility by three times and the mechanical strength by 38% as compared with pure PVDF-HFP separator. Batteries with the composite separator show significantly improved cyclic stability and rate performance at both room temperature and temperatures up to 80 degrees C. In particular, the composite separator promotes homogenous Li+ flux through the separator and suppresses Li dendrite growth in Li-metal based batteries.

Abstract:Incorporation of ceramic materials into separators has been frequently applied in both research and industry to improve the overall high-temperature performances of lithium ion batteries. However, inorganic ceramic particles tend to form aggregation in separators and even fall off in the separator matrix due to the inferior combination between ceramic particles and polymer matrix, giving rise to a decrease in separator porosity and thus the degradation of battery performances. Herein, a single-layer core-shell architecture is designed to reinforce the polymer matrix through encircling Al2O3 particles by poly(vinylidene fluoride) with strong inter-molecular interaction. The 3D-reinforced microstructure effectively improves pore distribution and thermal stability to resist the dimensional deformation at high temperatures, thus giving rise to a high Coulombic efficiency of 99.16% and 87.5% capacity retention after 500 cycles at 80 degrees C for LiFePO4/Li batteries. In particular, the excellent performances of the proposed separator microstructure are confirmed with a thickness value of commercial separators. This work provides a promising strategy to fabricate a core-shell structural composite separator for stable lithium ion batteries at high temperatures.
Bi-Morphological Form of SiO2 on a Separator for Modulating Li-Ion Solvation and Self-Scavenging of Li Dendrites in Li Metal Batteries.

Abstract:The lithium (Li) metal anode is highly desirable for high-energy density batteries. During prolonged Li plating-stripping, however, dendritic Li formation and growth are probabilistically high, allowing physical contact between the two electrodes, which results in a cell short-circuit. Engineering the separator is a promising and facile way to suppress dendritic growth. When a conventional coating approach is applied, it usually sacrifices the bare separator structure and severely increases the thickness, ultimately decreasing the volumetric density. Herein, we introduce dielectric silicon oxide with the feature of bi-morphological form, i.e., backbone-covered and backbone-anchored, onto the conventional polyethylene separator without any volumetric change. These functionally vary the Li+ transference number and the ionic conductivity so as to modulate Li-ion solvation and self-scavenging of Li dendrites. The proposed separator paves the way to maximizing the full cell performance of Li/NCM622 toward practical application.

Functionalized γ-Boehmite Covalent Grafting Modified Polyethylene for Lithium-Ion Battery Separator

Abstract:In the field of lithium-ion batteries, the challenges posed by the low melting point and inadequate wettability of conventional polyolefin separators have increased the focus on ceramic-coated separators. This study introduces a highly efficient and stable boehmite/polydopamine/polyethylene (AlOOH-PDA-PE) separator. It is crafted by covalently attaching functionalized nanosized boehmite (γ-AlOOH) whiskers onto polyethylene (PE) surfaces. The presence of a covalent bond increases the stability at the interface, while amino groups on the surface of the separator enhance the infiltration of the electrolyte and facilitate the diffusion of lithium ions. The PE-PDA-AlOOH separator, when used in lithium-ion batteries, achieves a discharge capacity of 126 mAh g−1 at 5 C and retains 97.1% capacity after 400 cycles, indicating superior cycling stability due to its covalently bonded ceramic surface. Thus, covalent interface modification is a promising strategy to prevent delamination of ceramic coatings in separators.

A Nano-Silica Modified Polyimide Nanofiber Separator with Enhanced Thermal and Wetting Properties for High Safety Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:The commercial polyolefin separators still possess two well-known drawbacks: poor wettability and thermal stability. Herein, a thin and lightweight silica filled in polyimide (PI) nanofibers membrane is prepared by electrospinning. Without any binders, the nano-silica particles are firmly embedded in the PI nanofibers with high structure stability. The PI-SiO2 membrane with high porosity (90%) presents enhanced conductivity due to the excellent electrolyte wettability and large electrolyte uptake (about 2400%). In addition, the PI-SiO2 membrane displays good mechanical flexibility and enhanced thermal stability up to 250°C, which significantly improve the safety of lithium-ion batteries when used as a separator. The LiMn2O4/Li cell with the PI-SiO2 separator exhibits highly improved rate capability and cycling stability at different temperatures (25°C and 55°C), which make PI-SiO2 membrane as a promising secure separator candidate for high-performance and safety lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Coating inorganic ceramic particles on commercial polyolefin separators has been considered as an effective strategy to improve thermostability of separator. However, the introduction of the coating layer could induce pore blockage on the surface of the polyolefin separator. Herein, a ceramic composite layer that consists of alumina nanoparticles (n-Al 2 O 3 ) and halloysite nanotubes (HNTs) is designed to modify the polyethylene (PE) separator (the modified separator is denoted as AH-PE). The HNTs with hollow nanotubular structure construct a light skeleton and provide fast ion transport channels while Al 2 O 3 particles function as heat-resistant fillers to inhibit the shrinkage of the separator at elevated temperatures. The total thickness of AH-PE separator is only 14 μm. Consequently, the mass increment of AH-PE separator decreases from 5 g/m 2 to 3.5 g/m 2 , and the Gurley value reduces by 23%, compared with Al 2 O 3 coated PE separator (A-PE). Due to the synergistic effects of Al 2 O 3 and HNTs, AH-PE separator exhibits highly improved thermal stability (almost no shrinkage at 170°C for 30 min), high Li + transference number (up to 0.47), and long cycle life of 450 h for Li | Li cells. Moreover, the LiFePO 4 /Li cells assembled with AH-PE separators demonstrate improved rate capability and safety performance.

Abstract:ABSTRACTOrganic–inorganic coating polypropylene separators were developed by introducing SiO2 nanoparticles through sol–gel process, where polydopamine was used as an intermediate layer. Scanning electron microscopy results showed the coating layers have highly porous structure, which was beneficial for liquid electrolyte uptake. Compared with pristine polypropylene separator, the ceramic separators showed improved thermal stability, higher ionic conductivity, and lower interfacial impedance. Abstract:Commercial polymeric separators in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) typically suffer from limited porosity, low electrolyte wettability, and poor thermal and mechanical stability, which can degrade the battery performance especially at high current densities. Here, the design of hierarchically porous, ultralight silica membranes as separator for high-performance LIBs is reported through the assembly of hollow mesoporous silica (HMS) particles on the cathode surface. The rich mesopores and large cavity of individual HMS particles provide low-tortuosity pathways for ionic transport, while simultaneously serving as electrolyte reservoir to further boost the electrochemical kinetics. Moreover, benefiting from their inorganic and hierarchically porous nature, such HMS separators display better electrolyte affinity, thermal stability, and mechanical strength than commercial polypropylene (PP) separators. As a demonstration, LIBs with a LiFePO4 cathode coated with HMS separators exhibit exceptional rate capability and cycling stability, outperforming LIBs with PP and Al2O3-modified PP separators as well as separators made of solid silica particles.
Porous Cellulose Diacetate-Sio 2 Composite Coating on Polyethylene Separator for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Battery

Abstract:The developments of high-performance lithium ion battery are eager to the separators with high ionic conductivity and thermal stability. In this work, a new way to adjust the comprehensive properties of inorganic-organic composite separator was investigated. The cellulose diacetate (CDA)-SiO2 composite coating is beneficial for improving the electrolyte wettability and the thermal stability of separators. Interestingly, the pore structure of composite coating can be regulated by the weight ratio of SiO2 precursor tetraethoxysilane (TEOS) in the coating solution. The electronic performance of lithium ion batteries assembled with modified separators are improved compared with the pristine PE separator. When weight ratio of TEOS in the coating solution was 9.4%, the composite separator shows the best comprehensive performance. Compared with the pristine PE separator, its meltdown temperature and the break-elongation at elevated temperature increased. More importantly, the discharge capacity and the capacity retention improved significantly.

Abstract:In an effort to improve thermal stability and mechanical properties of porous polypropylene (PP) separators for lithium-ion battery, SiO 2 /PP/SiO 2 composite separators were prepared by introducing SiO 2 layer on both sides of PP separator through a dip-coating process, with polyvinylidene fluoride–hexafluoropropylene (PVDF–HFP) as binder. SiO 2 nanoparticles are evenly distributed and closely packed in the coated layer, which features a porous honeycomb structure. This unique porous structure was quantitatively analyzed by Gurley value, and it can retain liquid electrolyte, leading to higher electrolyte uptake and ionic conductivity of the composite separator. The introduction of SiO 2 -coated layers can not only suppress thermal shrinkage but also improve mechanical properties of the composite separator. C-rate capability and cycle performance of composite separator were also investigated, and compared to those of pristine PP separator.
