Abstract:The product from free radical and coordination polymerization generally are homopolymer or random copolymer with broad molecular weight distribution.In the past two decades,the breakthroughs in controlled/living radical and coordination polymerization and shuttling polymerization make it possible to use almost all vinyl monomers,particularly those cheap monomers,to produce more complex chain structures like di-,tri-block copolymer and gradient copolymers.With rational design,these copolymers might be high performance and high added value synthetic materials.The mechanisms and the up-to-date progress of these polymerization methods were introduced,and their possible applications were discussed.

Abstract:Sequence-controlled polymers are prepared by the combination of thiol-ene click reaction and amino-yne click reaction. Due to the high selectivity of the amine unit and thiol unit toward thiolactone, methacrylate, propiolate, etc., the sequence of the resulting polymers can be easily controlled by monomer-addition sequence. Moreover, thiol-ene click reaction and amino-yne click reaction can be carried out under mild conditions without need of any catalyst. Different kinds of sequence-controlled copolymers have been prepared by the combination of thiol-ene click reaction and amino-yne click reaction in one pot. NMR spectra and GPC traces confirmed the formation of polymers with high molecular weight and controlled sequence structure. Therefore, we provide a new method for the preparation of functional polymers with well-controlled sequences.

Abstract:<p>Sequence control has attracted increasing attention for its ability of regulating polymer property and performance. Herein, the sequence‐controlled polymer containing acrylonitrile (AN) is achieved by using 2,5‐dimethylfuran/acrylonitrile adduct as a latent monomer. The temperature‐dependent retro Diels–Alder reaction is engaged in controlling the release of AN during RAFT polymerization, that is, regulating the instant AN concentration via a non‐invasive and in situ manner. Such control over the instant AN concentration and particularly the molar ratio of comonomer pair leads to the simultaneous change of monomer units in "living" polymeric chain, thus resulting in the sequence–controlled polymeric structures. By delicately manipulating the polymerization temperature, diverse sequence‐on‐demand structures of AN‐containing copolymers, such as poly(AN/methyl methacrylate), poly(AN/styrene), poly(AN/butyl acrylate), poly(AN/N,N‐dimethylacrylamide), and poly(AN/N‐isopropylacrylamide) are created. Meanwhile, this study presents an initial attempt in tuning the thermal responsivity of poly(AN/N‐isopropylacrylamide), which is closely correlated to the sequence of polymer structure. More importantly, the polymer with averagely distributed AN units results in the higher thermal sensitivity. Therefore, the synthetic strategy proposed in this work offers a promising platform for accessing the sequence‐controlled copolymers containing AN structures, thus expanding the investigation on the relationship between the polymer structures and correlated properties.</p>

Abstract:A new strategy combing quantitative reactions and reversible-covalent chemistry is proposed for sequential synthesis of a series of sequence-controlled polymers with different sequences. Using a Michael addition reaction between acrylate and thiol, an aminolysis reaction of five-membered cyclic dithiocarbonate and a thiol substitution reaction of bromomaleimide and thiol, AB-, AB'C- and AB'CD-sequenced molecules are synthesized via AB, AB'C and AB'CD sequential monomer additions, respectively. These three molecules all have furan-protected maleimido group at one end, and the other end of AB-, AB'C- and AB'CD-sequenced molecules is amine, thiol and anthracene groups, respectively. Due to the fact that the furan-protected maleimido group can be efficiently transformed to maleimide group at high temperature via retro Diels-Alder reaction, AB-, AB'C- and AB'CD-sequenced molecules polymerize into sequence-controlled polymers with corresponding sequences at 120 degrees C. Through this strategy, the synthesis of molecular modules does not require separation and purification, and sequence-controlled polymers with specific sequence can be synthesized in a one-pot process via adding different monomers and adjusting reaction condition.

Although new examples are constantly flourishing in the literature, the process that allows two or more consecutive multicomponent-reactions to react in a single operation for the syntheses of sequence-controlled polymers has not been developed until now. Abstract:The synthesis of polymers with on-demand sequence structures is very important not only for academic researchers but also for industry. However, despite the existing polymerization techniques, it is still difficult to achieve copolymer chains with on-demand sequence structures. Here we report a dually switchable and controlled interconvertible polymerization system; in this system, two distinct orthogonal polymerizations can be selectively switched ON/OFF independent of each other and they can be interconverted promptly and quantitatively according to external stimuli. Thus, the external stimuli can manipulate the insertion of distinct monomers into the resulting copolymer chains temporally, spatially, and orthogonally, allowing the on-demand precise arrangement of sequence structures in the resulting polymers. This dually switchable and interconvertible polymerization system provides a powerful tool for synthesizing materials that are not accessible by other polymerization methods.

Abstract:Synthesizing artificial polymers with precise sequence structures, such as their biological analogues, is a serious challenge and of great importance in polymer science. Recently, step-growth polymerization and chain growth polymerization have been the main synthesis methods for preparing artificial sequence-regulated polymers. However, it is difficult to obtain sequence-controlled polymers with sufficient molecular diversity via step-growth polymerization; on the other hand, chain-growth polymerization generally requires laborious repetitive monomer feeding. In this focus review, the sequential multicomponent reactions for preparing periodic sequence-controlled polymers with sufficient molecular diversity and complexity and the interconvertible hybrid copolymerizations producing hybrid multiblock copolymers rapidly in one pot are highlighted.

Abstract:The synthesis of sequence-controlled polymers is an important emerging trend in recent polymer science. However, the relationship between the sequence structure and performance of the polymer was rarely studied. Here, we synthesized a series of sequence-controlled proline-based multi-block copolymers via one-pot iterative RAFT polymerization, it achieved high monomer conversions (> 98%), precise control of molecular weight, and low polydispersity. The relationship studied between the sequence structure of multi-block copolymers and thermoresponsive performance revealed that the LCSTs of these copolymers are sequence dependent, and it can be altered by variation the sequence structure. In addition, temperature-variable H-1 NMR analysis and dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) simulation technique were chosen to further study on the nature of phase transition and the relationship between sequence structure and thermoresponsiveness. Thus, we have demonstrated a concise method to construct sequence-controlled bio-based copolymers with precisely adjustable structures and functions which can be applied to the design of biological and medical materials.

Abstract:Control over the monomer sequence during polymerization has attracted great attention in polymer science, but it remains a serious challenge. Recently, multicomponent reactions have been playing a significant role in the synthesis of sequence‐controlled polymers due to their inherent advantage of combining three or more starting materials in time‐saving, one‐pot operations to afford complex microstructures. In this feature article, the recent representative developments in the synthesis of sequence‐controlled polymers by multicomponent reactions are highlighted to give insight on the design of novel sequence‐controlled polymers with sufficient molecular diversity and complexity. The main part of this article is divided into three sections according to the different polymerization strategies using multicomponent reactions: direct multicomponent polymerization, multicomponent cascade polymerization, and iterative multicomponent reaction, respectively. It is anticipated that this feature article may provide some guidance for the fabrication of sequence‐controlled polymers by multicomponent reactions.

Abstract:Sequence-controlled polymers, including biopolymers such as DNA, RNA, and proteins, have attracted much attention recently because of their sequence-dependent functionalities. The development of an efficient synthetic approach for non-natural sequence-controlled polymers is hence of great importance. Multicomponent polymerizations (MCPs) as a powerful and popular synthetic approach for functional polymers with great structural diversity have been demonstrated to be a promising tool for the synthesis of sequence-controlled polymers. In this work, we developed a facile metal-free one-pot multicomponent tandem polymerization (MCTP) of activated internal alkynes, aromatic diamines, and formaldehyde to successfully synthesize structural-regulated and sequence-controlled polyheterocycles with high molecular weights (up to 69 800 g/mol) in high yields (up to 99%). Through such MCTP, polymers with the in situ generated multisubstituted tetrahydropyrimidines or dihydropyrrolones in the backbone and inherent luminescence can be easily obtained with high atom economy and environmental benefit, which is inaccessible by other synthetic approaches.

Abstract:An ideal stimuli-responsive controlled/living radical polymerization should have the ability to manipulate the reaction through spatiotemporal "on/off" controls, achieving the polymerization under fully open conditions and allowing for precise control over macromolecular architecture with defined molecular weights and monomer sequence. In this contribution, the photo (sunlight)-induced electron transfer atom transfer radical-polymerization (PET-ATRP) can be realized to be reversibly activated and deactivated under fully open conditions utilizing one-component copper(II) thioxanthone carboxylate as multifunctional photocatalyst and oxygen scavenger. The polymerization behaviors are investigated, presenting controlled features with first-order kinetics and linear relationships between molecular weights and monomer conversions. More importantly, "CuAAC&ATRP" concurrent reaction combining PET-ATRP, photodriven deoxygenation, and photoactivated CuAAC click reaction is successfully employed to synthesize the sequence-defined multiblock functional copolymers, in which the iterative monomer additions can be easily manipulated under fully open conditions.

Abstract:The regulation of polymer topology and the precise control over the monomer sequence is crucial and challenging in polymer science. Herein, we report an efficient solution-phase synthetic strategy to prepare regio- and sequence-controlled conjugated polymers with topological variations via the usage of methyliminodiacetic acid (MIDA) boronates. Based on the solubility of MIDA boronates and their unusual binary affinity for silica gel, the synthesized regio- and sequence-defined conjugated oligomers can be rapidly purified via precipitation or automatic liquid chromatography. These synthesized discrete oligomers can be used for iterative exponential and sequential growth to obtain linear and dendrimer-like star polymers. Moreover, different topological sequence-controlled conjugated polymers are conveniently prepared from these discrete oligomers via condensation polymerization. By investigating the structure-property relationship of these polymers, we find that the optical properties are strongly influenced by the regiochemistry, which may give inspiration to the design of optoelectronic polymeric materials.

Abstract:This work presents a novel strategy of performing a reversible microcrystalline-spherulite morphology transition based on photo-triggered immiscible phase aggregation in semi-crystalline block polymer. We propose that by assembling or disintegrating immiscible photo-active aggregates during melt crystallization under illuminations, end-to-end distance R of the photo-inactive semi-crystalline polymer chains can be adjusted to generate high-entropy state, R< R 0 or low-entropy state, R > R 0. Thus, the corresponding entropic effect influences chain nucleation and can be used to control crystallization morphologies. Besides, photo-tunable mechanical and electrical properties can be also simultaneously endowed. Promising potential applications of this study for optical patterning, memory materials and solid-state electrochemistry can be anticipated.

Abstract:<p class="a-plus-plus">Monomer sequence influences the properties and applications of polymers. Consequently, massive efforts have been made to implement sequence control of polymers. In this work, we developed a computer-aided droplet-flow polymerization based on photo-controlled reversible-deactivation radical polymerization (photo-RDRP), enabling synthesis of gradient copolymers of tunable sequential arrangements, low dispersity and good structural fidelity from various monomers without following their intrinsic reactivities, which is a key limitation in sequence control. The obtained gradient copolymers exhibit unique thermal properties and stimulus responsiveness comparing with the random and block counterparts, and their glass transition behaviour could be regulated by the gradient tendency. We believe that the unprecedented gradient photo-RDRP based on flow synthesis opens a robust and versatile avenue to streamline the synthesis of well-defined gradient polymers, and is compatible with other polymerization mechanisms.</p>

Abstract:Keen desires for artificial mimicry of biological polymers and property improvement of synthesized ones have triggered intensive explorations for sequence-controlled copolymerization. However, conventional synthesis faces great challenges to achieve this goal due to the strict requirements on reaction kinetics of comonomer pairs and tedious synthetic processes. Here, sequence-controlled alternating copolymerization with molecular precision is realized on surface. The stoichiometric control serves as a thermodynamic strategy to steer the polymerization selectivity, which enables the selective alternating organometallic copolymerization via intermolecular metalation of 4,4”-dibromo-p-terphenyl (P-Br) and 2,5-diethynyl-1,4-bis(phenylethynyl)benzene (A-H) with Ag adatoms on Ag(111) at P-Br: A-H = 2, as verified by scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory studies. In contrast, homopolymerization yield increases as the stoichiometric ratio deviates from 2. The microscopic characterizations rationalize the mechanism, providing a delicate explanation of the stoichiometry-dependent polymerization. These findings pave a way to actualizing an efficient sequence control of copolymerization by surface chemistry.

Abstract:Rational design of monomer sequence for desired properties is challenging. This study investigates the effect of monomer distribution of double hydrophilic copolymers (DHCs) with electron-rich units on cluster triggered emission (CTE) capacity. By means of combining latent monomer strategy, reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization and selective hydrolysis technology, the random, pseudo di-block and the gradient DHCs consisting of pH-responsive polyacrylic acid (PAA) segments and thermo-responsive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) (PNIPAM) segments were successfully synthesized in a controlled manner. Moreover, the gradient DHCs showed a tremendously increased luminescent intensity due to the distinct hydrogen-bonding interaction compared to random and pseudo di-block DHCs. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first reported the direct correlation between luminescent intensity and sequence structure of non-conjugated polymer. Meanwhile, thermo and pH dual-responsive clusteroluminescence could be easily performed. This work demonstrates a novel and facile method to tailor the hydrogen-bonding for the stimuli-responsive light-emitting polymers.
Synthesis of Polymeric Topological Isomers Based on Sequential Ugi-4CR and Thiol-Yne Click Reactions with Sequence-Controlled Amino-Functionalized Polymers

Abstract:Herein, sequence-controlled polymerization and sequential Ugi-4CR/thiol-yne click reactions inspired a novel synthetic strategy for preparing a well-defined multigraft polymer in which the sequence-controlled amino-functionalized backbones were converted to mono- or di-modular alkynyl-functionalized main chains via an Ugi-4CR and clicked with well-defined thiol end-functionalized polystyrene branches through the "graft-onto" method. The Ugi-4CR showed high conversions (above 91%), while the efficiencies for the thiol-yne click reaction were above 97%. Meanwhile, an innovative concept of "polymeric topological isomers" that had similar molecular weights but different grafted structures was proposed for the first time. These four well-defined multigraft isomeric polymers (mono-brush polymer, double-brush polymer, mono-comb polymer and double-comb polymer) provide a high-level platform for polymer physics studies. Through preliminary measurements, the dilute solution properties were found to be significantly different and to change regularly with variations in the grafted structures.

Abstract:The precise sequence control of polymer chain is an important research topic of polymer chemistry. Although some methods such as iterative synthesis and supramolecular polymerization have been developed to fabricate sequence-controllable polymer, it is still a great challenge to consecutively prepare multiple supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures. In this work, through the reasonable utilization of assembly motifs, we integrated multiple host-guest recognitions and metal coordination interactions to prepare different sequence-controlled supramolecular polymers by a multistep assembly strategy. This research provides inspiration for the design and preparation of supramolecular polymers with different sequence structures.
