Abstract:Efficient charge transport is a key step toward high efficiency in small-Molecule organic photovoltaics. Here we applied time-of-flight and organic field-effect transistor to complementarily study the influences of molecular structure, trap states, and molecular orientation on charge transport of small-molecule DRCN7T (D1) and its analogue DERHD7T (D2). It is revealed that, despite the subtle difference of the chemical structures, D1 exhibits higher charge mobility, the absence of shallow traps, and better photosensitivity than D2. Moreover, charge transport is favored in the out-of-plane structure within D1-based organic solar cells, while D2 prefers in-plane charge transport.

Abstract:The introduction of polarizable heteroatom, such as O, and S, attached peripheral side chains of conjugated moieties such as polyacenes has not been systematically investigated. To study such effects, and to explore semiconductors with both high charge mobility and luminescence properties, we present a comparative systematic study of heteroatom effects on the conduction of organic semiconductors in a representative series of new organic semiconductors based on the blue phenyl-anthracene molecule core. Elucidated by the single-crystal X-ray analysis, thin film XRD and AFM measurements, a correlation between the molecular structure variation, film ordering, and charge mobility has been established. Quantum chemistry calculations combined with the Marcus-Hush electron transfer theory interpret the transport parameters. The anisotropic transport properties of these compounds were suggested by the DFT predictions and the high hole mobility in BEPAnt and BOPAnt is contributed mainly by the parallel packing of these compounds with the highest parallel to mu(h); these results are in good agreement with the experimental observations. Heteroatoms are demonstrated to influence the charge mobility dramatically. Our systematic investigation will provide valuable guidance for a judicious material design of semiconductors for OTFT applications.
Revealing the Mechanism of Contrasting Charge Transport Properties for Phenyl and Thienyl Substituent Organic Semiconductors

Abstract:The aromatic substituents such as phenyl and thienyl have a direct impact on the structure-property relationship of conjugated semiconducting molecules and thus play a significant role in determining the performance of organic thin film transistors (OTFTs). To design a molecule with good charge transport properties, it is essential to understand the charge transfer process. Herein, through the study of two groups of classical OTFT materials with different substituents, we demonstrate the fundamental reasons for the contrasting carrier mobilities between the materials in each group by means of DFT calculations. The results from our theoretical analysis on the two groups of molecules provide very good estimates of their charge transfer properties and the numerical trend from our calculation is consistent with that from the corresponding experimental results. We reveal in detail the impacts of the subtle geometric differences caused by different substituents from two aspects including (i) the significant influence of steric hindrance on reorganization energy and (ii) the overlap of the adjacent molecular orbitals (MOs) on electron coupling. Overall, our systematic investigation into the charge transfer mechanism and geometry effects allows us to employ a reliable theoretical methodology for the prediction of the material performance, which is crucial for the design of high performance OTFT materials.
Influence Of The Halogenated Substituent On Charge Transfer Mobility Of Aniline Tetramer And Derivatives: Remarkable Anisotropic Mobilities

Abstract:The halogen-substituted derivatives and the parent aniline tetramer as organic semiconductors have been theoretically investigated with a focus on the electronic properties and charge transport properties through density functional theory and Marcus Hush theory methods. The study on the transport properties of holes and electrons can obtain insight into the effect of halogenation substitution on injection of charge carriers and transport character. The equilibrium geometries, reorganization energies, frontier molecular orbitals, intermolecular electronic couplings, electrostatic potential isosurfaces, and angular resolution anisotropic mobilities were calculated. The calculated results revealed that perfluorination and perchlorination can induce stronger structure relaxation and effectively lower the highest occupied molecular orbital and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital levels. The angle dependence mobilities of the three crystals show remarkable anisotropic character. The carrier mobility curves for both electron and hole transport of the parent aniline tetramer and halogen-substituted derivatives all show a remarkable anisotropic feature. Furthermore, the ANIH and ANIC1 crystals show higher electron-transfer mobilities than hole-transfer mobilities and, hence perform better as an n-type organic semiconductor. The ANIH crystal possesses a low reorganization energy combined with a high electronic coupling and electron-transfer mobility, which indicates that the ANIH crystal might be a more ideal candidate as an n-type organic semiconductor material.

Abstract:Pyrene is one kind of interesting polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon with high charge carrier mobility and chemical stability. The electronic and charge transport properties of six butterfly shaped tetraaryl pyrenes with different electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents are explored based on density functional theory. The effects of substituents on the molecular structure, reorganization energy, molecular orbitals, ionization energies, electron affinities, crystal packing, transfer integrals, and charge carrier mobilities are analyzed in detail to clarify the structure-property relationships of the studied molecules. The different crystal packing motifs and diverse intermolecular interactions of the investigated molecules lead to obviously different transfer integrals when different substituents are introduced into the central pi-system. The reorganization energies and the frontier molecular orbitals are also modulated by the substituents. These factors result in drastically different charge carrier mobilities of molecules 1 to 6. The hole and electron mobilities of molecule 1 are on the same order of magnitude (mu(h,ave.)/mu(e,ave.) is equal to 2.3) due to the balanced transfer integrals, which could be used as an ambipolar semiconductor. Molecule 6 with the thienyl moiety possesses the highest hole mobility due to the largest transfer integrals of holes originating from the strong intermolecular interactions, and may be used as a p-type semiconductor. While the introduced difluorophenyl groups of molecule 4 lead to a lower LUMO level and effective transfer integrals of electrons, achieving an electron mobility of up to 0.01 cm(2) V-1 s(-1), and showing promising application as an n-type semiconductor.
Effect of substituents on self-assembling behaviors and charge transport properties of nonplanar heterocycloarenes

Abstract:(Hetero)cycloarenes possessing rigid molecular skeletons and large π-systems are the potential active materials in various electronic devices. However, the development of their organic electronics still lags far behind the synthetic chemistry. Herein, in order to bridge this gap, we reported the study of organic semiconductor materials based on heterocycloarenes in detail about the relationship between structure, properties, and device performance. Three varying straight alkyl chain substituted butterfly-shaped heterocycloarenes PTZs were strategically synthesized. Compared with bulky aryl(mesityl) substituted PTZ1, PTZs show additional self-assembly behavior. Concentration-dependent 1 H NMR spectra indicated that the self-assembly behavior can be modulated by the alkyl chain length. Medium alkyl chain length substituted heterocycloarene PTZ-C6 showed the strongest association constants of 490 M −1 in solution, and a similar trend was also observed in solid state by thin film absorption spectra. Remarkably, despite the nonplanar conjugated backbones, solution-processing thin film transistor based on PTZ-C6 exhibits hole mobility up to 0.13 cm 2 V −1 s −1 and considerable current on/off ratio of 10 5 . Our study demonstrates that substituent engineering of heterocycloarenes is a powerful strategy for modulating self-assembling structures and promoting transistor device performance.

Anisotropic Charge Transfer Mobility Properties of Systems with Large Conjugation Core and Peripheral Phenyl Rings

Abstract:The role of crystal structures and electronic properties has been widely investigated for carrier transport in organic semiconductors. The first-principles method was applied to analyse the effect of effective electronic couplings and reorganization energy on the carrier mobility for the combination of large conjugation core and peripheral phenyl rings. It is found that for compound 1 and compound 2, the reorganization energies of hole transfer (λ h ) are all smaller than those of electron transfer (λ e ), furthermore, the reorganization energy of hole transfer for compound 1 is much lower than compound 2. The monomer of compound 1 has the lower ionization potential which will contribute to the reception of holes. The change of molecular stacking modes will also influence the charge transport performance, which can be drawn from the theoretical calculation of the mobility of single crystal structure. The electronic couplings of compound 1 are basically greater than that of compound 2. For compound 1 crystal, the relatively superior intermolecular electronic coupling and weak reorganization energy of hole transport would make it play a part as an organic semiconductor materials of p-type. The theoretical prediction should be a promising strategy to provide clearer design guidelines for further promotion in carrier mobility.

Abstract:A Marcus electron transfer theory coupled with an incoherent polaron hopping and charge diffusion model in combining with first-principle quantum chemistry calculation was applied to investigating the effects of heteroatom on the intermolecular charge transfer rate for a series of heteroacene molecules. The influences of intermolecular packing and charge reorganization energy were discussed. It was found that the sulphur and nitrogen substituted heteroacenes were intrinsically hole-tran sporting materials due to the reduced hole reorganization energy and the enhanced overlap between HOMOs. For the oxygen-substituted heteroacene, it was found that both the electronic couplings and the reorganization energies for holes and electrons were comparative, indicating the application potential of ambipolar devices. Most interestingly, for the boron-substituted heteroacenes, theoretical calculations predicted a promising electron-transport material, which is rare for organic materials. These findings provide insights into rationally designing organic semiconductors with specific properties.
The Planarization of Side Chain in Carbazole Sensitizer and Its Effect on Optical, Electrochemical, and Interfacial Charge Transfer Properties

Abstract:The energy level is the critical property of the organic dye, determining the light-harvesting region of the dye, as well as the thermodynamic possibilities and the efficiencies of multiple interfacial charge transfer processes in DSSCs. In our previous work, the planarization of D-π-A skeleton can efficiently and selectively optimize the energy levels, leading to the improvement of the light-harvesting capability and the interfacial charge transfer processes. However, whether the planarization of side chain will also produce similarly superior influence is still unclear. Thus, by the planarization of side chain, two novel carbazole isomers are developed and evaluated, while the planarization reaction is also investigated by nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and theoretical calculation. With the planarization of side chain in donor part, the HOMO levels of two dyes are slightly lifted while their LUMO levels remain at the same level, leading to the slightly expansion of their light-harvesting region. However, the interfacial charge transfer processes cannot be efficiently improved by this planarization due to its irregular and negligible effect, which is far different from the influence caused by the planarization of D-π-A skeleton. Consequently, our finding demonstrates that although the planarization of side chain in donor part has irregular influence on interfacial charge transfer processes, it still can selectively uplift the HOMO level and further improve the light-harvesting capability, which can be applied as the useful complement to the planarization of D-π-A skeleton for the development of organic dye in the future.
Theoretical insights into the charge transport in perylene diimides based n-type organic semiconductors

Abstract:We employed a tunneling enabled hopping model to investigate the charge transport properties for four n-type organic semiconductors perylene diimides compounds. The molecular parameters are calculated by density functional theory and the transport is modeled by kinetic Monte Carlo simulation. It is found that the substitutions at the bay positions of the perylene core have large influences on the charge transport properties through modifications in molecular conformation, the charge reorganization energy as well as the stacking networks in the crystals. The temperature dependence of the mobility shows typical “band-like”, in agreement with the recent experiment, but we ascribe it to be the characteristic of nuclear tunneling effect for a localized charge, not by a delocalized band. The largest charge mobility is calculated to be 16.96cm2/Vs for the cyano substitution, in good comparison with the experimental value of 6cm2/Vs.

Abstract:The intramolecular and intermolecular charge transport parameters are evaluated quantum chemically for three fluorinated derivatives of perylene bisimide (PBI) semiconductors, two of which feature a twisted PBI core. Charge transfer rates are computed within the Marcus-Levich-Jortner formalism including a single effective mode treated quantum mechanically and are injected in a kinetic Monte Carlo scheme to propagate the charge carrier in the crystal and to estimate charge mobilities at room temperature. The relative order of computed mobilities agrees with the observed trend, and the largest mobility is computed for the planar PBI derivative. It is suggested that thermally induced disorder effects should contribute considerably to the observed large mobility of the planar PBI derivative, while a retardation effect induced by the presence of alternating slow and fast jumps along pi-stacked PBI columns is responsible for the lower mobilities of the two twisted derivatives. The computed parameters reveal the subtle interplay between intramolecular and intermolecular contributions to the charge carrier propagation in these organic semiconductors and may guide the design of more efficient architectures.

Abstract:In recent years, the charge carrier mobility study of organic semiconductors has seen significant progress and surpassed that of amorphous silicon thanks to the development of various molecular engineering, solution processing, and external alignment methods. These advances have allowed the implementation of organic semiconductors for fabricating high-performance organic electronic devices. In particular, diketopyrrolopyrrole-based small-molecular and polymeric organic semiconductors have garnered considerable research interest due to their ambipolar charge-carrier properties. In this article, we focus on conducting a comprehensive review of previous studies that are dedicated to the external alignment, thermal annealing, and molecular engineering of diketopyrrolopyrrole molecular structures and side-chain structures in order to achieve oriented crystal orientation, optimized thin-film morphology, and enhanced charge carrier transport. By discussing these benchmark studies, this work aims to provide general insights into optimizing other high-mobility, solution-processed organic semiconductors and sheds lights on realizing the acceleration of organic electronic device applications.

A Localized Planarization Strategy in Hole Mobility Modulation of Disordered Triphenylamine‐Based Organic Semiconductors

Abstract:Hole mobility plays a critical role in organic semiconductors, which is synergistically controlled by many factors closely interrelated to the molecular configuration, for example, the degree of molecular planarization. But at present, analysis from quantitative ab initio models to assess this correlation is lacking. Here, a series of triphenylamine‐based materials are designed and investigated to build a system with different levels of planarization. The key parameters in the Marcus equation are calculated with quantum and molecular mechanics methods and the hole mobilities are evaluated. Compared with non‐planar and fully planar molecules, localized planar molecules exhibit low reorganization energy, high transfer integral, and moderate energy disorder. Considering the conjugation and rigidity effects, a localized planarization strategy is demonstrated to design functional triphenylamine‐based materials by keeping a balance of the three factors above and enhanced hole mobilities are predicted. This strategy will shed light on mobility optimization and the applications of triphenylamine‐based materials. This work reveals the correlation between molecular planarity to hole mobility in a specific triphenylamine‐based material system. After a standardized quantum and molecular mechanics method and kinetic Monte Carlo simulation, the key factors in the Marcus formula are summarized. Then, a localized planarization strategy is demonstrated for the hole mobility optimization of triphenylamine‐based materials with different planarity.

Abstract:3,4,9,10-Tetracyano- and tetrachlorocoronene-1,6,7,12-tetracarboxy diimides with low LUMO levels at -3.9 to -4.2 eV are developed. These molecules manifest potent n-type semiconductive capability in solution-processed field-effect transistors, with electron mobilities of up to 0.16 cm(2) V(-1) s(-1) measured in air. The device performances of analogous molecules elucidate the importance of side chain structures in the semiconductive properties.

Abstract:Molecular electronics is generally considered an alternative approach for the future fabrication of electronic devices. In the past few decades, benefiting from the impressive advancement in synthetic chemistry there emerged abundant molecular structures that are able to serve as conductive backbones for the electrons to transport through, as well as derivatives containing versatile substituents. Controlling the charge transport through a molecule lays the foundation for incorporating the molecule as a functional component in an active electronic device. In recent years the study on substituent-dependent conductance behavior attracted intensive research interest as it provides a feasible strategy to tune the electron transport in the molecule. In this review, we summarized the influence of substituents on single-molecule conductance and the mechanism of the influence into three aspects: the quantum interference effect, the electronic effect of substituents inducing changes in the energy levels of molecular orbitals, and the conformational restriction of the conductive backbone by the weak interaction between the substituents.

Abstract:Charge carrier mobility is at the center of organic electronic devices. The strong couplings between electrons and nuclear motions lead to complexities in theoretical description of charge transport, which pose a major challenge for the fundamental understanding and computational design of transport organic materials. This tutorial review describes recent progresses in developing computational tools to assess the carrier mobility in organic molecular semiconductors at the first-principles level. Some rational molecular design strategies for high mobility organic materials are outlined.

Abstract:Organic donor-acceptor (D-A) blending systems have displayed great potential in the application of organic optoelectronics. Conventionally, charge transport is not allowed along the stacking direction for D-A mixed-stack organic cocrystals or along the intrachain backbone direction for D-A copolymers, since the nearest-neighbored D or A molecules/units are too far away to interact directly with each other. In fact, for hole (electron) transport, an effective electronic coupling between adjacent D (A) molecules/units can be manifested by a superexchange mechanism with the in between A (D) molecule/unit as a bridge. In this perspective, we have briefly summarized our recent progress in under- standing the long-range superexchange electronic couplings to assess the charge transport and polarities of D-A cocrystals and copolymers. The energy-splitting and partition-based methods are first introduced to evaluate the bridge-mediated superexchange couplings. The important role of the superexchange mechanism in the charge transport is then discussed, and the similarity and difference between D-A cocrystals and copolymers are elucidated. Finally, the factors that determine the charge carrier polarities and the magnitudes of superexchange couplings are analyzed to provide some insightful principles for the design of high-mobility organic semiconductors based on D-A blending systems.

Abstract:The effects of fluorine substitutions on the molecular geometry and optoelectronic properties were investigated based on the conjugated molecular framework consisting of the mono-fluorinated benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole unit. The two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy of model compounds indicated that the fluorine substitution can significantly change the chemical environment of the adjacent hydrogen atoms, which was in consistence with the changed molecular geometry as indicated by single crystal diffractions and theoretical calculations. Based on an AB type of monomer, the regioregular conjugated polymer with specifically oriented fluorine along the vector of the polymer backbone was constructed. The UV vis absorption, photoluminescent, and electroluminescent spectra demonstrated the slightly hypsochromic shift of the copolymer comprising the fluorine substitution relative to the non-fluorinated counterpart. Of particular interest is that the copolymer based on the fluorinated benzothiadiazole unit exhibited electron-dominant charge transportation, for which the electron mobility is about 1 order of magnitude higher than that of hole mobility.
The effect of electron-withdrawing substituents in asymmetric anthracene derivative semiconductors
