Abstract:The commercialization of microalgae biofuel is being inhibited by significant drawbacks such as low lipid productivity and the high cost of feedstock. As such, extensive research efforts have focused on improving cultivation strategies to achieve high cell densities while maximizing lipid content. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of three main growth factors temperature, indole-3-propionic acid (IPA), and ammonium on the growth rate, biomass density, and lipid productivity of Chlorella pyrenoidosa. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic data collected in this study were used to build multivariate calibration models. The results showed that ammonium and IPA concentrations of 60 mg L-1 and 252.5 mg L-1, respectively, were optimal for algal growth at 30 degrees C, Box-Behnken design response surface methodology indicated that under optimal temperature and nitrogen concentrations, a relatively low concentration of IPA could stimulate the growth of Chlorella. Meanwhile, a high nitrogen concentration could serve as stress to induce lipid accumulation. The toxic effect of excessive ammonium might be alleviated by the supplement of IPA in the medium, enabling the cells to grow on excess ammonium.
