Abstract:Excitation wavelength controllable lanthanide upconversion allows for real-time manipulation of luminescent color in a composition-fixed material, which has been proven to be conducive to a variety of applications, such as optical anti-counterfeiting and information security. However, current available materials highly rely on the elaborate core–shell structure in order to ensure efficient excitation-dependent energy transfer routes. Herein, multicolor upconversion luminescence in response to both near-infrared I and near-infrared II (NIR-I and NIR-II) excitations is realized in a novel but simple NaYGeO4:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphor. The remarkably enhanced red emission ratio under 1532 nm excitation, compared with that under 980 nm excitation, could be attributed to the Yb3+-mediated cross-relaxation energy transfers. Moreover, multi-wavelength excitable temperature-dependent (295–823 K) upconversion luminescence realizes a ratiometric thermometry relying on the thermally coupled levels (TCLs) of Er3+. Detailed investigations demonstrate that changing excitation wavelength makes little difference for the performances of TCL-based ratiometric thermometry of NaYGeO4:Yb3+/Er3+. These findings gain more insights to manipulate cross-relaxations for excitation controllable upconversion in single activator doped materials and benefit the cognition of the effect of excitation wavelength on ratiometric luminescence thermometry.

Abstract:Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+-doped transparent alkaline earth fluorosilicate glass ceramics containing SrF2 nanocrystals were prepared and their microstructures and spectroscopic properties were investigated. The formation of SrF2 nanocrystals enriched with Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ in the glass ceramics was confirmed by XRD, HRTEM and SAED. The glass ceramics exhibited intense upconversion luminescence behaviors, owing to efficient energy transfers from Yb3+ to Er3+ and Tb3+ and low phonon assistant non-radiative transition probabilities of excited Er3+ and Tb3+. The upconversion could be enhanced significantly by increasing the annealing temperature and the luminescence color could be adjusted by varying the Yb3+/Tb3+/Er3+ ratio. Upconversion of Er3+ could be described as sequential energy transfer from single Yb3+ to single Er3+, while upconversion of Tb3+ described as cooperative energy transfer from double Yb3+ to single Tb3+.
Thermal Enhancement of Upconversion by Negative Lattice Expansion in Orthorhombic Yb2W3O12

Abstract:Thermal quenching of photoluminescence represents a significant obstacle to practical applications such as lighting, display, and photovoltaics. Herein, a novel strategy is established to enhance upconversion luminescence at elevated temperatures based on the use of negative thermal expansion host materials. Lanthanide-doped orthorhombic Yb2W3O12 crystals are synthesized and characterized by in situ X-ray diffraction and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The thermally induced contraction and distortion of the host lattice is demonstrated to enhance the collection of excitation energy by activator ions. When the temperature is increased from 303 to 573K, a 29-fold enhancement of green upconversion luminescence in Er3+ activators is achieved. Moreover, the temperature dependence of the upconversion luminescence is reversible. The thermally enhanced upconversion is developed as a sensitive ratiometric thermometer by referring to a thermally quenched upconversion.
Upconversion Emission in Tm/Er/Yb Co‐Doped Yttria Stabilized Zirconia Single Crystals

Abstract:Blue, green, and red emissions through upconversion and energy transfer processes are investigated as a function of the Tm3+ concentration in Tm/Er/Yb triply doped yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ) crystals upon excitation at 980 nm. YSZ doped with 0.075–0.250 mol% Tm2O3, 1.50 mol% Er2O3, and 2.00 mol% Yb2O3 are prepared by the optical floating zone method, and confirmed to be in the cubic phase by X‐ray diffraction. The blue emission corresponds to the Tm3+ 1G4→3H6 transition, and is produced through a three‐photon process, whereas the green and red light are emitted through two‐photon processes from the Er3+ 2H11/2→4I15/2 and 4S3/2→4I15/2 transitions for green and the Er3+ 4F9/2→4I15/2 transition for red. However, interactions between the different lanthanide ions is a factor in determining the overall color of these triply doped crystals, and this is not simply a summation of the results from the singly doped systems, so this mechanism of energy transfer is discussed in detail. The CIE color chromaticity coordinates for the present samples under excitation at 980 nm approach (0.39, 0.55), which is in the yellow‐green region. Upconversion luminescence is stimulated in Tm3+ and Er3+ by Yb3+. Emission of blue light from Tm3+ involves three photons, while a two‐photon process produces green and red light from Er3+. These colors are modified by energy transfer between Er3+ and Tm3+.

Abstract:Tm3+/Yb3+-codoped ZrScW2PO12 microparticles were prepared in order to solve problems of the severe thermal quenching and unsatisfactory thermometric properties of most luminescent materials. The synthesized materials exhibit a rarely observed negative thermal expansion (NTE) effect, which was verified by in situ X-ray diffraction experiments, performed at high temperature conditions. Excited at 980 nm laser, bright blue upconversion (UC) emissions originating from Tm3+ are observed. Moreover, owing to the promoted energy transfer, cross-relaxation and non-radiative decay processes at high temperature triggered by the NTE effect, the observed UC emissions arising from 1G4 and 3F2,3 levels show non-monotonic responses to temperature. By analysing the temperature dependent luminescence intensity ratio of these UC emissions originating from the non-thermally coupled levels of Tm3+ (1G4 and 3F2,3) the thermometric properties of the prepared microparticles were investigated in detail. Interestingly, the maximum absolute and relative sensitivities of synthesized compounds are 0.09 and 1.45% K-1, respectively, which are independent on Yb3+ content, but they can be manipulated by employing different sensing modes. Our results manifest that the exploitation of the NTE effect is an efficient way to control the UC luminescence features of rare earth ions, to realize high performance optical thermometry.

Abstract:Owing to the great role and application potential of upconversion luminescent materials in the field of temperature sensing, it is very essential to develop new rare-earth materials with excellent upconversion luminescence (UCL) and temperature sensing properties. In this study, an Er 3+ /Yb 3+ /Gd 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 as a UCL material was synthesized. In this system, Er is used as the luminescence centre; Yb is used as the sensitizer, and Gd can effectively adjust the crystal field of the matrix material and improve the UCL performance. In addition, the composition and intrinsic luminescence mechanism of the materials are studied in detail. It can be seen that the UCL intensity was strengthened for Er 3+ /Yb 3+ /Gd 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 compared to Er 3+ /Yb 3+ co-doped YNbO 4 . The results show that Gd 3+ can effectively improve the UCL intensity of Er 3+ /Yb 3+ -doped YNbO 4 samples. Using fluorescence intensity ratio technology, we obtained the temperature sensing performance of the material, which has the highest sensitivity at 493 K (0.0033 K −1 ). This suggests that the material has great application potential in the fields of UCL and temperature sensing.

Abstract:Near-infrared (980 nm) to near-infrared (800 nm) and blue (490 nm) upconversion has been studied in 0.2% Tm3+ and 10% Yb3+ codoped Lu2O3-ZrO2 solid solutions as a function of the ZrO2 content in the range of 0-50%, prepared by a high-temperature solid-state reaction. The continuous enhancement of upconversion luminescence is observed with increasing ZrO2 content up to 30%. Analyses of the Yb3+ emission intensity and lifetime indicate enlarged absorption of a 980 nm excitation laser and enhanced energy transfer from Yb3+ to Tm3+ with the addition of ZrO2. The spectrally inhomogeneous broadening of the dopants in this disordered solid solution is considered to play the main role in the enhancement by providing better matches with the excitation laser line and increasing the spectral overlap for efficient energy transfer from Yb3+ to Tm3+. In addition, the inhomogeneous broadening is also validated to improve energy migration among Yb3+ ions and energy back transfer from Tm3+ to Yb3+. Hence, it is understandable that a drop in the upconversion luminescence intensity occurs as the concentration of ZrO2 is further increased from 30% to 50%. This work indicates the possibility of disordered crystals to achieve intense upconversion luminescence for biological and optoelectronic applications.
Enhancement of photoluminescence and anomalous thermal quenching behavior of Er/Yb/Zr co-doped BaTiO3 ceramic

Abstract:We report highly efficient and stable photoluminescence (PL) properties of Er/Yb/Zr co-doped BaTiO3 ceramic. With the sensitizing effect of Yb3+, the emission intensity of Er3+ in the green region was increased by 8.47 times under the optimized Zr4+ concentration. Strong thermal enhancement of emission at different wavebands was attained with different concentration of Zr4+. In addition, the PL thermal quenching behavior was suppressed by energy transfer and ligand distortion induced by Zr4+. The PL excitation spectra and decay curves also verified the efficient energy transfer between luminescent center and material. This work opens up a new way to improve the PL properties of Er3+ doped materials and provides a practical solution to inhibit the temperature quenching behavior.

Abstract:A significant luminescence enhancement is realized over 17‐fold by heterovalent doping in negative thermal expansion materials. This is the main reason that heterovalent doping lowers the local symmetry of the sensitizer and activator, which improves their radiative transition probability. Moreover, the advances in combating thermal quenching of luminescence materials provide exciting opportunities for flexible thin‐film thermometry in real‐world sensing scenarios. Rare earth luminescent materials based on negative thermal expansion (NTE) have achieved thermally enhanced photoluminescence, but these materials typically exhibit relatively weak luminescence intensity at room temperature. In this work, adopting the cationic heterovalent substitution strategy, a series of Sc2‐2xZrxNbxW3‐1.5xO12‐3x:Yb/Er (SZNWOx:Yb/Er) phosphors are prepared by solid‐state reaction. With the increase of x value, the substitution of Sc3+ by Zr4+/Nb5+ leads to a decrease in the local symmetry of Er3+. Compared with Sc2W3O12:Yb/Er (SWO:Yb/Er), this heterovalent substitution strategy significantly improves the luminescence intensity of SZNWOx:Yb/Er while retaining its anti‐thermal quenching luminescence and negative thermal expansion properties. By comparing and analyzing the temperature dependent temperature‐dependent steady‐state/transient spectra of SZNWO0.10:Yb/Er and SWO:Yb/Er phosphors, the anti‐thermal quenching mechanism is discussed from a new perspective. The luminescence intensity ratio (LIR) of the thermal coupled levels (TCL) of Er3+(2H11/2/4S3/2) is adopted for optical temperature sensing, achieving a maximum absolute sensitivity of 1.04% K−1 at 464 K and a maximum relative sensitivity of 1.08% K−1 at 298 K for the SZNWO0.10:Yb/Er phosphors. Finally, the potential applicability using the constructed flexible thin film to real‐world sensing scenarios is demonstrated, offering accurate and real‐time temperature monitoring at the local hotspot in the electronic component of the CPU chip.
Upconversion enhancement through engineering local crystal field in Yb3+ and Er3+ codoped BaWO4 along with excellent temperature sensing performance

Abstract:High-efficiency upconversion (UC) luminescence has been a hot topic in the development of optical materials. In this study, an extremely strong green UC is successfully achieved in BaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+ phosphor through engineering the local environment around the luminescent centers, realized by Ca2+ doping. The green UC intensity of Ca2+ doped BaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+ is 6.5 and 2.3 times stronger than that of BaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+ and CaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+, respectively. Eu3+ ions are employed as the structure probe to detect the evolution of the crystal field symmetry with the increase of Ca2+ doping concentration, of which the results match well with the corresponding variation of the UC spectra. Meanwhile, the BaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+/Ca2+ exhibits excellent temperature sensing performance based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) between the thermally coupled 2H11/2 and 4S3/2 states of Er3+ ions. Its absolute sensitivity and relative sensitivity for optical thermometry can reach 1.21% K-1 and 1.31% K-1, outperforming the majority of the same type optical thermometers. The temperature resolution of the present thermometer remains lower than 0.1 K within the temperature range of 298 K to 573 K. The intense green UC luminescence along with the outstanding thermal properties makes the BaWO4: Yb3+/Er3+ phosphor a promising candidate for optical thermometry.

Abstract:Trivalent lanthanides (Ln3+)-doped upconversion luminescent (UCL) materials with negative thermal expansion (NTE) property are endowed an exciting thermal enhancement performance. Hitherto, selectively thermal enhancement for the multi-narrow-band emissions of phosphor with NTE property is not implemented. Herein, Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ phosphor synthesized by the modified sol-gel method is explored in selectively enhanced green emission (Er3+: 2H11/2/4S3/2→4I15/2) due to the formation of Yb-MoO4 dimer at high ambient-temperature. The 54-fold selectively enhancement of green emission is obtained from 298 K to 523 K. In addition, the influences of dopant-concentration and calcination-temperature on UCL properties are analyzed. Accordingly, based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) for 2H11/2/2F9/2 and 4S3/2/2F9/2 as well as (2H11/2 + 4S3/2)/2F9/2, the optimal relative sensitivity of temperature sensing in the Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ sample could reach 0.14 K−1 at 298 K. All these indicate that this Y2Mo3O12:Yb3+/Er3+ material is a promising candidate for high-sensitivity optical temperature sensing.

Abstract:For the first time, undoped and Yb3+/Ln(3+) (Ln = Ho, Er, Tm) codoped orthorhombic lutetium oxyfluorides have been fabricated via a facile stepwise route involving room temperature co-precipitation and a subsequent thermal decomposition procedure. The phase formation, crystal structure, particle morphologies and up-conversion (UC) luminescence were investigated by means of powder X-ray diffraction, TEM, IR, thermal and luminescence spectroscopy. It has been found that the intermediate Lu(CO3)(1-x)(OH)(y)F1+2x-y precursor plays an essential role in the formation of the final metastable LunOn-1Fn+2 Vernier phase. Multicolour up-conversion has been achieved in the Yb3+/Tm3+, Yb3+/Ho3+ and Yb3+/Er3+ codoped samples under near-infrared excitation (lambda = 980 nm) and, notably, the Yb3+/Er3+ codoping yields an almost single-band red emission at about 660 nm. A short Ln(3+)-Ln(3+) distance combined with the multiple doping sites in the low symmetry (C-1 and C-s) host lattice are considered responsible for the effective energy transfer and, therefore, the intense up-conversion emission. The present work, together with previous studies on the UC performance of Vernier phase yttrium oxyfluorides, illustrates that the Vernier phase oxyfluorides are promising up-conversion host materials for lanthanide ions in a variety of applications such as bioprobes and chromatic displays.
Enhanced Optical Temperature Sensing Performance Based on Dual Emission Centers of Y2O3: Yb3+, Tm3+, Ho3+ Upconversion Phosphor

Abstract:Y2O3: 5%Yb3+, 0.5%Tm3+, z%Ho3+ (z = 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0) upconversion luminescent materials were synthesized by CO2 laser zone melting method. The upconversion luminescence (UCL) spectra of the samples were recorded with the excitation of 980 nm laser, and the energy transfer processes among doped rare earth (RE) ions were analyzed. The introduction of Ho3+ ions into Y2O3: 5%Yb3+, 0.5%Tm3+ gave the samples four distinct UCL bands, including blue, green, red, and infrared emission bands. The temperature sensing characteristics based on the fluorescence intensity ratio (FIR) of non-thermally coupled levels (NTCLs) of Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions were studied, and the derived maximum relative sensitivity (SR) reached impressive value of 0.0138 K-1 (298 K). Compared to the materials doped with single emission center of either Tm3+ or Ho3+ ions, the luminescent material co-doped with both Tm3+ and Ho3+ ions exhibited higher sensitivity while maintaining a wide temperature measurement range. The research results indicate that Y2O3: Yb3+, Tm3+, Ho3+ upconversion phosphor promises broad application prospects in optical temperature measurement.

Abstract:Lanthanum-doped double halide perovskite has attracted increasing interest due to its distinctive up-conversion and near-infrared (NIR) luminous characteristics. Here, erbium ion (Er3+) doped Cs2(Na/Ag)BiCl6 microcrystals (MCs) were synthesized and proved to be one of the most prospective candidates for optical thermometry. The enhancement of both white light from self-trapped exciton emission and NIR emission from Er3+ ion of Cs2AgBiCl6 microcrystals is caused by lattice distortion due to Na+ ion doping. Fluorescence intensity ratio and lifetime methods provide self-referenced and sensitive thermometry under 405 and/or 980 nm laser excitation at the temperatures from 80 to 480 K. Besides, the maximum values of relative and absolute sensitivity of 3.62%/K and 27%/K can be achieved in the low to high temperature range under 980 and 405 nm laser co-excitation. Through the experimental analysis, Er3+ doped Cs2(Na/Ag)BiCl6 double perovskite is considered to be an ideal self-calibrating thermometric material due to its good long-term stability and multi-mode function of excitation and detection.

Abstract:The temperature quenching luminescence effect of optical materials used for fluorescence intensity ratio temperature sensing seriously hinders the realization of temperature sensing in the high temperature region. In recent years, some abnormal thermal enhancement up-conversion materials have attracted extensive attention due to their great potential to sense temperature in high temperature regions. At present, few up-conversion luminescence thermal enhancement materials have reported, and the exploration of thermal enhancement luminescence mechanism is not thorough enough. In this work, new up-conversion luminescence materials Sc2W3O12: Yb3+, Er3+ were prepared, and the thermal enhancement effect was successfully regulated by changing the Yb3+ concentration. The integral emission intensity and intensity of 521 nm at 753 K of Sc1.42W3O12: 0.54Yb3+, 0.04Er3+ can reach 74.5 and 104.9 times of that at room temperature, respectively. In addition, the thermal enhancement luminescence property of up-conversion materials Sc2W3O12: Yb3+, Er3+ was confirmed to be derived from negative thermal expansion properties based on two reference experiments. Finally, the dual temperature sensing model was established to sense the temperature. The results show that the up-conversion thermal enhancement luminescence material is a potential temperature sensing material with high sensitivity, wide temperature sensing range, high resolution and good thermal fatigue resistance.

Up-conversion luminescence behaviors in Er3+ doped single crystal KNbO3 nanosheets

Abstract:Perovskite oxides have attracted much attention owing to their excellent physical properties, such as piezoelectricity, ferroelectricity, and ferromagnetism. Moreover, these properties can be strongly affected and regulated by the doping strategy. In this work, Er3+ doped single crystal KNbO3 nanosheets were successfully synthesized via a solvothermal method. XRD analysis indicated that Er3+ firstly substituted into the B site (Nb5+) and then A site (K+) in the ABO(3) perovskite structure with the further increasing content of Er3+. The orthorhombic structure of the pure KNbO3 and Er3+ doped KNbO3 was proved in terms of the Raman spectra. The SEM observation demonstrated that the size of the asobtained nanosheets was about 70 nm in thickness and 3 mm in diameter. The single crystal structure state of the as-obtained products was confirmed by HRTEM. Furthermore, the growth mechanism of Er3+ doped KNbO3 nanosheets was rationally elaborated and proposed. The as-obtained Er3+ doped KNbO3 nanosheets exhibited excellent up-conversion (UC) photoluminescence (PL) properties with a strong green emission and a weak red emission. The maximum emission intensity of the UC PL spectrum was achieved with 0.4 mol% of Er3+ doped. To conclude, the as-synthesized Er3+ doped KNbO3 nanosheets could be a potential candidate for the development of multifunctional devices, by introducing PL properties to piezoelectric KNbO3 materials.

Abstract:Intelligent regulation of energy transfer process among different rare earth ions doped in the matrix is an effective strategy to realize high-performance upconversion (UC) luminescence. Based on this, wheat ears like Yb3+/Er3+/(Tm3+, Ho3+) triple doped YF3 microrods were fabricated via hydrothermal method, and the morphology, crystal structure, UC luminescence performance dependent on Tm3+/Ho3+ doping concentrations were studied. By comparing with the Yb3+, Er3+ co-doped YF3 microrods, the UC luminescence intensity is enhanced in Yb3+/Er3+/(Tm3+, Ho3+) triple doped YF3 samples due to the cross relaxation processes between Er3+ and Tm3+/Ho3+. Moreover, red emission is enhanced more significantly than green emission in YF3: Yb3+, Er3+, Tm3+, which is contrary to that in YF3: Yb3+, Er3+, Ho3+. The possible energy transfer upconversion mechanism involved is discussed in detail. Meanwhile, an adjustable emission color is easy to achieve via altering the doped Er3+/Tm3+/Ho3+ ion concentration. These studies on the UC luminescence enhancement mechanism of Yb3+/Er3+/(Tm3+, Ho3+) triple doped YF3 microrods are expected to provide a reference for the development of high-efficiency luminescent materials.

Abstract:Abstract Rare earth (RE 3+ )-doped phosphors generally suffer from thermal quenching, in which their photoluminescence (PL) intensities decrease at high temperatures. Herein, we report a class of unique two-dimensional negative-thermal-expansion phosphor of Sc 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Yb/Er. By virtue of the reduced distances between sensitizers and emitters as well as confined energy migration with increasing the temperature, a 45-fold enhancement of green upconversion (UC) luminescence and a 450-fold enhancement of near-infrared downshifting (DS) luminescence of Er 3+ are achieved upon raising the temperature from 298 to 773 K. The thermally boosted UC and DS luminescence mechanism is systematically investigated through in situ temperature-dependent Raman spectroscopy, synchrotron X-ray diffraction and PL dynamics. Moreover, the luminescence lifetime of 4 I 13/2 of Er 3+ in Sc 2 (MoO 4 ) 3 :Yb/Er displays a strong temperature dependence, enabling luminescence thermometry with the highest relative sensitivity of 12.3%/K at 298 K and low temperature uncertainty of 0.11 K at 623 K. These findings may gain a vital insight into the design of negative-thermal-expansion RE 3+ -doped phosphors for versatile applications.

Abstract:Y2O3 codoped with different Zr4+ (10% mol, 30% mol, and 49% mol) and constant Er3+ (2% mol) ions were successfully prepared via the laser annealing method. According to the XRD data, the lattice parameters decrease with the increase of Zr4+, and the grain size increases with Zr4+. The crystal space group switches from Ia‐3 to Fm‐3 m at a Zr4+ concentration of 49% mol. As the concentration of doped Zr4+ increases, the upconversion emission of Er3+ decreases. The nonequivalent substitution of Y3+ by Zr4+ creates lattice defects, which affect the fluorescence intensity of Er3+ ions in the material. The temperature sensing behavior of Y88%Zr10%Er2%O1.55 crystals based on the fluorescence intensity ratio between 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4I9/2→4I15/2 transitions of Er3+ is studied. The results show that after codoping with Zr4+, the 4S3/2→4I15/2 and 4I9/2→4I15/2 transitions satisfy the Boltzmann distribution formula at temperatures above 333K. And the temperature sensing relative sensitivity can reach 2.96%K−1.
