Abstract:Due to rising global environmental challenges, air/water pollution treatments technologies especially membrane techniques have been focused. In this context, air or purification membranes have been considered effective for environmental remediations. In the field of polymeric membranes, high performance polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes have gained increasing research attention. The polymer/graphene nanomaterials exposed several potential benefits when processed as membranes. This review explains utilizations of polymer and graphene derived nanocomposites towards membranes formation and water or gas separation or decontamination properties. Here, different membrane designs have been developed depending upon the polymer types (poly(vinyl alcohol), poly(vinyl chloride), poly(dimethyl siloxane), polysulfone, poly(methyl methacrylate), etc.) and graphene functionalities. Including graphene in polymers influenced membrane microstructure, physical features, molecular permeability or selectivity, and separations. Polysulfone/graphene oxide nanocomposite membranes have been found most efficient with enhanced rejection rate of 90%–95%, high water flux >180 L/m2/h, and desirable water contact angle for water purification purposes. For gas separation membranes, efficient membranes have been reported as polysulfone/graphene oxide and poly(dimethyl siloxane)/graphene oxide nanocomposites. In these membranes, N2, CO2, and other gases permeability have been found higher than even >99.9%. Similarly, higher selectivity values for gases like CO2/CH4 have been observed. Thus, high performance graphene-based nanocomposite membranes possess high potential to overcome the challenges related to water or gas molecular separations.
“Mix-Then-On-Demand-Complex”: In Situ Cascade Anionization and Complexation of Graphene Oxide for High-Performance Nanofiltration Membranes

Abstract:Assembling two-dimensional (2D) materials by polyelectrolyte often suffers from inhomogeneous microstructures due to the conventional mixing-and-simultaneous-complexation procedure ("mix-and-complex") in aqueous solution. Herein a "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept via on-demand in situ cascade anionization and ionic complexation of 2D materials is raised that drastically improves structural order in 2D assemblies, as exemplified by classical graphene oxide (GO)-based ultrathin membranes. Specifically, in dimethyl sulfoxide, the carboxylic acid-functionalized GO sheets (COOH–GOs) were mixed evenly with a cationic poly(ionic liquid) (PIL) and upon filtration formed a well-ordered layered composite membrane with homogeneous distribution of PIL chains in it; next, whenever needed, it was alkali-treated to convert COOH–GO in situ into its anionized state COO––GO that immediately complexed ionically with the surrounding cationic PIL chains. This "mix-then-on-demand-complex" concept separates the ionic complexation of GO and polyelectrolytes from their mixing step. By synergistically combining the PIL-induced hydrophobic confinement effect and supramolecular interactions, the as-fabricated nanofiltration membranes carry interface transport nanochannels between GO and PIL, reaching a high water permeability of 96.38 L m–2 h–1 bar–1 at a maintained excellent dye rejection 99.79% for 150 h, exceeding the state-of-the-art GO-based hybrid membranes. The molecular dynamics simulations support the experimental data, confirming the interface spacing between GO and PIL as the water transport channels.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Grafting Thin Layered Graphene Oxide onto the Surface of Nonwoven/PVDF-PAA Composite Membrane for Efficient Dye and Macromolecule Separations

Abstract:This study investigates the permeance and rejection efficiencies of different dyes (Rhodamine B and methyl orange), folic acid and a protein (bovine serum albumin) using graphene oxide composite membrane. The ultrathin separation layer of graphene oxide (thickness of 380 nm) was successfully deposited onto porous polyvinylidene fluoride-polyacrylic acid intermediate layer on nonwoven support layer using vacuum filtration. The graphene oxide addition in the composite membrane caused an increased hydrophilicity and negative surface charge than those of the membrane without graphene oxide. In the filtration process using a graphene oxide composite membrane, the permeance values of pure water, dyes, folic acid and bovine serum albumin molecules were more severely decreased (by two orders of magnitude) than those of the nonwoven/polyvinylidene fluoride-polyacrylic acid composite membrane. However, the rejection efficiency of the graphene oxide composite was significantly improved in cationic Rhodamine B (from 9% to 80.3%) and anionic methyl orange (from 28.3% to 86.6%) feed solutions. The folic acid and bovine serum albumin were nearly completely rejected from solutions using either nonwoven/polyvinylidene fluoride-polyacrylic acid or nonwoven/polyvinylidene fluoride-polyacrylic acid/graphene oxide composite membrane, but the latter possessed anti-fouling property against the protein molecules. The separation mechanism in nonwoven/polyvinylidene fluoride-polyacrylic acid membrane includes the Donnan exclusion effect (for smaller-than-pore-size solutes) and sieving mechanism (for larger solutes). The sieving mechanism governs the filtration behavior in the nonwoven/polyvinylidene fluoride-polyacrylic acid/graphene oxide composite membrane.

Abstract:Layered composites of monolayer graphene and polymers have drawn significant research attention with extensive application scenarios. Transferring monolayer graphene onto polymer surfaces efficiently has been a fundamental issue in determining the performance of the composites. Despite considerable efforts in the past decade, how to optimally trade off between high-quality graphene transfer and operational convenience still remains challenging. Here we present a novel method allowing the direct transfer of wafer-sized monolayer graphene onto polyethylene membrane surfaces by harnessing van der Waals (vdW) interaction. Use of intermediate, glue, electricity, vacuum, heat, pressure or pre-treatment is not required. It allows preparing graphene/polymer composite membranes in a rapid and clean manner, which is also easy to be scaled up. By analyzing post-strain cracks of graphene, the graphene-polyethylene intrinsic interface shear strength was quantified as 9.52 MPa. Eventually, a kind of ultrathin graphene/polymer composite membrane was prepared with high transparency (>90%), low thickness (<200 nm), smooth surface (<17 nm roughness) high porosity and decimeter sizes. Furthermore, complex-surface transfer, simultaneous double-sided transfer, and facile patterning transfer were readily achieved, confirming the versatility of this transfer method. This newly developed vdW transfer method provides an insightful understanding of the graphene-polymer interfacial interaction and a facile approach to preparing monolayer graphene/polymeric composite membranes.

Abstract:We have presented a concept of ultralow-pressure reverse osmosis membrane based on hyperbranched polyesteramide through interfacial reaction promoted by pyridine derivate. In this strategy, a key catalyst of 4-dimethylaminopyridine, which can both eliminate the steric hindrance of acyl transfer reaction and facilitate the phase transfer in interfacial polymerization, is adopted to drive the formation of a thin film composite membrane from the hyperbranched polyesteramide and trimesoyl chloride. The results of the characterization demonstrate that a dense, rough, and hydrophilic active layer with a thickness of about 100 nm is formed when the 4-dimethylaminopyridine catalyst is used. The salt rejections for Na2SO4, NaCl, and MgSO4 of the as-prepared composite membrane are higher than 92%, especially for Na2SO4 with 98% rejection. The water fluxes reach about 30-40 L·m(-2)·h(-1) even at an operation pressure of 0.6 MPa. The membrane exhibits good chlorine-resistance ability but poor resistance abilities to acidic and alkaline solutions in the physical-chemical stability experiment. It is also found that the resultant membrane possesses excellent separation performance for PEG-200, showing a promising way to separate small organic molecules from water.

Abstract:One important application of polymer/graphene nanocomposites is in membrane technology. In this context, promising polymer/graphene nanocomposites have been developed and applied in the production of high-performance membranes. This review basically highlights the designs, properties, and use of polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes in the field of gas separation and purification. Various polymer matrices (polysulfone, poly(dimethylsiloxane), poly(methyl methacrylate), polyimide, etc.), have been reinforced with graphene to develop nanocomposite membranes. Various facile strategies, such as solution casting, phase separation, infiltration, self-assembly, etc., have been employed in the design of gas separation polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes. The inclusion of graphene in polymeric membranes affects their morphology, physical properties, gas permeability, selectivity, and separation processes. Furthermore, the final membrane properties are affected by the nanofiller content, modification, dispersion, and processing conditions. Moreover, the development of polymer/graphene nanofibrous membranes has introduced novelty in the field of gas separation membranes. These high-performance membranes have the potential to overcome challenges arising from gas separation conditions. Hence, this overview provides up-to-date coverage of advances in polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes, especially for gas separation applications. The separation processes of polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes (in parting gases) are dependent upon variations in the structural design and processing techniques used. Current challenges and future opportunities related to polymer/graphene nanocomposite membranes are also discussed.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) incorporation of the polymer matrix of membranes can provide properties such as great durability, resistance, and reduction of fouling. In turn, polyethylene glycol (PEG) is a polymer capable of increasing the porosity and flow of membranes. The study aimed to analyze the synthesis of composite membrane polysulfone (PSF), GO and PEG, to separate caffeine, diclofenac sodium, and amoxicillin dispersed in water. It observed an increase in roughness through the incorporation of GO and its reduction with the addition of PEG. Membrane permeability increased from 0.61 L m -2 h -1 bar -1 to 4.54 L m -2 h -1 bar -1 after the addition of GO and PEG. The water permeance of the synthesized membranes reached 37.81 L m -2 h -1 bar -1 . It is concluded that the structure and porosity, as well as the rejection of contaminants, were directly influenced by the incorporation of materials added to the membranes. The charge of GO contributed to structural and mechanical improvements of the membranes, reaching rejections of up to 80.61% of caffeine, 66.03% of diclofenac sodium, and 87.33% of amoxicillin with the membrane containing 1.5% of GO, being thus, it is considered promising for applications in water contaminated by emerging contaminants. The study brings real contributions to the area of membranes by developing an improved material, especially as it presents a high rejection of emerging contaminants that are still little studied.

Abstract:Forward Osmosis (FO) is a promising separation technology with a wide range of applications in water and wastewater treatment. FO membrane is the core of the forward osmosis process. Recently, the organic membrane has been widely used for forward osmosis applications even though inorganic membrane has excellent mechanical properties, decent chemical resistance, high durability, high porosity, and good hydrophilicity. Nevertheless, the utilization of inorganic membrane is hindered by the heat-intensive steps involved in its fabrication and the use of expensive source material. Geopolymerization provides a cost-effective technique for the preparation of inorganic membranes because of its sintering-free steps and utilization of fly ash as source material. Herein, we present a sintering-free, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective synthesis of geopolymeric membrane for application in forward osmosis. Fly ash was mixed with alkaline activator solution and porous reduced graphene oxide (PRGO) to prepare geopolymer slurry. The hydrogen peroxide and egg albumen were used as foaming agent and surfactant, while the membrane surface was coated with titanium dioxide to enhance the hydrophilicity of the membrane surface. The PRGO content improved the mechanical properties of the geopolymeric membrane. The average maximum flux recorded was 21 L/m 2 h with geopolymer substrate having a pore size of 1.8 μm and hydrophilic coated layer pore size of 0.25 μm. The varying concentrations of PRGO control the substrate's mechanical properties and pore size, as well as provide new insights for future studies. These preliminary results show that low-cost geopolymer material is a promising candidate for FO membrane fabrication.

Abstract:Membranes with high permeability and selectivity are desired for energy-efficient liquid separation. In the present work, a highly wrinkled surface and ultrafast water transport channels centered in a graphene oxide (GO)-in-polyamide membrane were prepared by in-situ embedding GO nanosheets into the separation layer of a nanofiltration (NF) membrane via an interfacial polymerization. The rough and hydrophilic surface enabled the attraction of large amounts of water molecules to the membrane, and the sub-20 nm membrane thickness and two-dimensional capillary network formed by the stacked GO nanosheets accelerated the transport of water molecules through the membrane. This wrinkled and sandwich structured ultrathin NF composite membrane gave a water flux up to 242 LMH/MPa (nearly four-fold higher than those of reported NF membranes) and an unchanged high salt rejection, simultaneously.

Abstract:Immense research efforts on graphene or graphene oxide have led to the formation of unique nanocarbon derived nanomaterials. Graphene and graphene oxide have been reinforced in polymeric matrices to form high performance nanocomposites. Significant applications of polymer nanocomposites with graphene or graphene oxide were experiential for nanofiber formation and ensuing membranes. This overview highlights design, essential features, and potential of graphene or graphene oxide derived nanocomposite nanofibrous membranes for water remediation permeation towards contaminates, salts, toxins, microbials, and other separation purposes. Here, polymer filled graphene or graphene oxide nanocomposites have been processed into nanofibers using appropriate techniques such as electrospinning, wet spinning, template method, etc. Afterwards, polymer/graphene and polymer/graphene oxide nanofiber nanocomposites were applied to form the nanocomposite membranes using appropriate techniques like solution processing, casting methods, infiltration, etc. Consequently, high performance membranes have been researched for technological purposes, especially water management competence. Future research on polymer/graphene nanofibrous membranes may lead to highly efficient systems for commercial and industrial level uses.

"Rooting" Engineering Strategy for Construction of Highly Stable, Scalable, Size-Customized Oxidized Graphene/PA6 Ultrafine Fiber Composite Nanofiltration Membranes for Water Purification

Abstract:Nanofiltration membranes based on graphene oxide exhibit substantial potential for practical applications in water treatment, poised to lead the next generation of separation technology. It is noteworthy that the prominent hydration interaction among graphene-graphene oxide nanosheets stands as the primary factor influencing its stability. Simultaneously, the absence of suitable graphene substrates presents challenges to its large-scale production. In this study, our initial endeavor involved constructing a graphene-based selective layer on a PA6 substrate using a quasi-"rooting" strategy. The graphene selective layer was anchored onto the surface of PA6 fibers (with a diameter size of up to 190.0 mm and a selective layer thickness of approximately 5.0 mu m). Experimental results reveal that the permeability of the hybrid graphene oxide/PA6 fiber composite nanofiltration membrane consistently maintained within the range of 7.7 to 14.9 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, with a remarkable dye molecule removal rate of 99.06 %. Even under challenging operating conditions (such as strong acid, strong alkali, polar solvent, oxidation, and the coexistence of salt ions), its separation performance remained stable. The permeability of composite membranes was retained between 10.6 and 12.7 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, and the rejection rate of CR dye reached 95.0 % under harsh conditions. Furthermore, the stability and anti-fouling performance of the composite membrane were significantly enhanced. Deposits on the membrane surface could be effectively removed through physical wiping and repeated water rinsing, maintaining membrane integrity even after vigorous ultrasonic cleaning (120 min, 950 W). Additionally, after undergoing 20 cycles of rinsing with deionized water and a 30-day soak in an aqueous solution, the PA6 substrate and graphene selective layer exhibited robust adhesion. No shedding was observed, and the dye rejection rate of the composite membrane consistently exceeded 95 %. This perfectly illustrates the exceptional structural stability and separation durability of the prepared separation membrane. Our work contributes fundamental design principles and theoretical insights for practical applications.
A Composite Membrane of Cross-Linked GO Network Semi-Interpenetrating in Polysulfone Substrate for Dye Removal from Water

Abstract:There has been an increasing focus on the application of graphene oxide (GO) composite membrane in water treatment. For long-term operation in aqueous solutions, the diamine cross-linkers are widely used to stabilize the GO laminates on the supporting substrate. Polysulfone (PSf) is a superior candidate to support the GO laminates due to its highly chemical, mechanical and thermal stability, but its lack of active sites for cross-linking reaction leads to the easy exfoliation of the GO laminates from the PSf surface within a few hours. In this work, we report a novel fabrication approach to obtain a composite membrane with semi-interpenetrating network of cross-linked GO film in the PSf substrate coupled with a high hydration stability in the application of water treatment. The hydration swelling has little effect on the water permeability and dye rejection. The GO composite membrane exhibits excellent structure stability in water, acid, and alkaline solutions for several days or even longer. Such membranes show comparable water flux with the pristine GO composite membranes, and nearly complete rejection to dyes (i.e. methyl orange, methylene blue, congo red and reactive green). This work provides a novel and facile strategy for the fabrication of structure-enhanced GO composite membrane highly promising for practical applications.
Tuning the Performance of Polypyrrole-Based Solvent-Resistant Composite Nanofiltration Membranes by Optimizing Polymerization Conditions and Incorporating Graphene Oxide

Abstract:Solvent-resistant nanofiltration (SRNF) is considered an emerging process capable of replacing conventional energy-consuming methods of separating organic mixtures in diverse industrial fields. This study optimized the performance of polypyrrole (PPy) composite SRNF membranes by varying the polymerization conditions, including the types and concentrations of oxidants and pyrrole concentrations, forming integral selective layers on hydrolyzed polyacrylonitrile (PAN-H) support membranes with better separation properties. The PAN-H support was partially hydrolyzed as indicated by the FTIR spectrum and was compatible with the PPy selective layer, as demonstrated by the apparent lack of an interfacial phase observed in the cross-sections of the composite membranes. The PPy/PAN-H composite SRNF membrane fabricated by reacting 0.5molL−1 (NH4)2S2O8 and 5.0wt% pyrrole exhibited a Rose Bengal (RB) rejection of 99.2% in isopropanol (IPA), with a relatively high solvent permeance. For the first time, graphene oxide (GO) was incorporated into the PPy/PAN-H composite SRNF membrane by dispersing GO into the pyrrole ethanol solution before polymerization. GO led to a significant enhancement in solvent permeance without compromising RB rejection. Compared with pure PPy/PAN-H composite SRNF membranes, the methanol (MeOH), ethanol (EtOH), and isopropanol (IPA) permeances of the GO-PPy/PAN-H membrane were approximately 945%, 635% and 302% higher, respectively. In a long term experiment, the GO-PPy/PAN-H composite SRNF membrane exhibited a constant IPA permeance of 1.21Lm−2h−1bar−1 and an RB rejection of approximately 99.0%. Therefore, the newly developed GO-PPy/PAN-H composite SRNF membranes in this study have significant potential for practical applications.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) has been addressed to have greatly potential in nanofiltration membranes. The state-of-the-art GO-based nanofiltration is still limited by the low permeability and instability for the large-scale industrial application. Herein, we developed a novel interfacial polymerization technology for high permeability and advanced stability GO-polyamide membrane with the help of spin. The high-rough microfiltration membrane was chosen as the substrate for providing large effective filtration area and trapping GO nanosheets in valley structures. Aided with centrifugal force field from the spin, the excess low concentration amine monomer solution could be removed homogeneous to form ultrathin and defect-free polyamide (PA) layer. The pure water permeability of the graphene oxide-polyamide (GO-PA) composite nanofiltration membrane could be up to 35.14 LMH/bar with Na2SO4 rejection of 93.56% at 4 bar, which is comparable to the top permeability of GO-based nanofiltration membranes with the similar salt rejection that has been reported. The membranes also behave high Na2SO4/NaCl selectivity (15-56) due to the extremely low NaCl rejection. In addition, the GO-PA composite nanofiltration membranes exhibit good stability in harsh environment and solvents. This work promotes GO-based nanofiltration for practical applications and provides a novel route for high-performance nanofiltration membranes.
Layer-by-layer Self-Assembly Preparation and Desalination Performance of Graphene Oxide Membrane

Abstract:Unlike previous utilization of ultrafiltration membranes as supporters of graphene oxide (GO) composite membranes, this study first adopts microporous nylon membranes as substrates. The cationic polyelectrolyte/GO composite membranes are prepared by the layer-by-layer self-assembly method via electrostatic attraction. The introduction of polycations between nanochannels in the GO membranes effectively suppresses the swelling and improves the stability of the membranes. It is found that the polyelectrolytes' charge density and the surface potential of the composite membranes jointly determine the membranes' properties. The experimental results show that the novel GO membranes can obtain high flux and considerable desalination performance under low operating pressure. Typically, the salt rejection rate reaches 66.8% for 1.0 g/L MgSO4, and the flux is 39.8 L·m−2·h−1·bar−1. Benefitting from the GO composite membranes keeping similar retention for both high and low concentration salt solutions, the ideal desalination performance could be obtained through multi-stage processes on the premise of ensuring high flux, which is more suitable for industry.

Abstract:Water-intensive industries have to comply with stringent environmental regulations and evolving regulatory frameworks requiring the development of new technologies for water recycling. Development of polymeric membranes may provide an effective solution to improve water recycling, but require finely-tuned pore size and surface chemistry for ionic and molecular sieving to be efficient. Additionally, fouling is a major challenge that limits the practical application of the membranes in water recycling in these industries. In this work, four different graphene oxide (GO) derivatives were incorporated into a polyethersulfone (PES) matrix via a non-solvent induced phase separation (NIPS) method. The GO derivatives used have different shapes (nanosheets vs nanoribbons) and different oxidation states (C/O = 1.05–8.01) with the potential to enhance water flux and suppress fouling of the membranes through controlled pore size, hydrophilicity, and surface charge. The permeation properties of the PES/GO membranes were evaluated using a water sample from the Athabasca oil sands of Alberta. The results for contact angle and streaming potential measurements indicate the formation of more hydrophilic and negatively charged PES/GO nanocomposite membranes. All graphene-based nanocomposite membranes demonstrated better water flux and rejection of organic matter compared to the unmodified PES membrane. The fouling measurement results revealed that fouling was impeded due to enhanced membrane surface properties. Longitudinally unzipped graphene oxide nanoribbons (GONR-L) at an optimum loading of 0.1 wt% (wt%) provided the maximum water flux (70 LMH at 60 psi), organic matter rejection (59%) and antifouling properties (30% improvement compared to pristine PES membrane). Flux recovery ratio experiments indicated a remarkable enhancement in the fouling resistance property of PES/GO nanocomposite membranes.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) membranes have been developed by stacking the nanosheets together for using as molecular sieve due to its two-dimensional (2D) capillaries. However, this technology is still far from being ready for large-scale production. Specifically, pure GO membranes exhibit poor resistance to cross-flow process, and the commonly used preparation techniques pose scale-up difficulties. Here, we report a durable membrane developed using dip-coating polydopamine (PDA), followed by spray-coating multi-layered GO (MLGO). The fast preparation speed of similar to 0.2 s cm(-2) and large preparation area of 1400 cm(2) per preparing cycle demonstrated the scalability of the method. Acting as a binder and stabilizer, PDA developed MLGO-substrate interaction and crosslinked the MLGO sheets. The modified oriented MLGO layer contributed up to 95.0% retention of Na2SO4 and showed enhanced stability in a 263-days soaking test and a nearly 800-h cross-flow test with the test area of 29.2 cm(2). This work expands the possibilities for the GO membranes in practical applications.
Chemically Cross-Linked Graphene Oxide as a Selective Layer on Electrospun Polyvinyl Alcohol Nanofiber Membrane for Nanofiltration Application

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets were utilized as a selective layer on a highly porous polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofiber support via a pressure-assisted self-assembly technique to synthesize composite nanofiltration membranes. The GO layer was rendered stable by cross-linking the nanosheets (GO-to-GO) and by linking them onto the support surface (GO-to-PVA) using glutaraldehyde (GA). The amounts of GO and GA deposited on the PVA substrate were varied to determine the optimum nanofiltration membrane both in terms of water flux and salt rejection performances. The successful GA cross-linking of GO interlayers and GO-PVA via acetalization was confirmed by FTIR and XPS analyses, which corroborated with other characterization results from contact angle and zeta potential measurements. Morphologies of the most effective membrane (CGOPVA-50) featured a defect-free GA cross-linked GO layer with a thickness of ~67 nm. The best solute rejections of the CGOPVA-50 membrane were 91.01% for Na2SO4 (20 mM), 98.12% for Eosin Y (10 mg/L), 76.92% for Methylene blue (10 mg/L), and 49.62% for NaCl (20 mM). These findings may provide one of the promising approaches in synthesizing mechanically stable GO-based thin-film composite membranes that are effective for solute separation via nanofiltration.
