Abstract:A 7 degrees of freedom dynamic equation of helical bevel gear system with clearance was developed.The evolution of bifurcation and the effects of parameters on bifurcation and chaos of the system were numerically studied by combining bifurcation diagrams and maximal Lyapunov exponent curves.The results indicate that,following the changing of parameters,the global nonlinear characteristics can be revealed from different levels,and the full view of complex evol- ving among period-n,quasi-periodic and chaos vibrations in expounded.The system comes into chaos through three ways: from long periodic shocks to chaos via period-doubling,from quasi-periodic motion after Hopf bifurcation to chaos via chattering shocks,and from quasi-periodic motion to chaos via phase locking.Furthermore,with increasing load and damping coefficient,and decreasing stiffness coefficient,the stable region is expanded,and bifurcation and chaos are slowed and suppressed.

Abstract:The periodic response and associated bifurcations of a hannonically driven oscillator with continuously piecewise linearity has received great attention during the past decade. The oscillator serves as a Widely used model to describe various mechanical systems with clearances, elastic constraints etc. Even if the 'comers' of the piecewise-linear restoring force in the oscillator make the system non~smooth on the interface between two linear regions, the bifurcation analysis published up to now is still based on the theory of smooth dynamic systems (e.g. Natsiavas 1990; Klcczka et al. 1992). The validity of such an extenlion is an opcn problem. To avoid the difficulty caused by the non-smoothness in bifurcation analysis, it is very natural to replace the non-s mooth restoring force by a smoothed one under certain approxima tion. The smoothed model proposed here is based on a locally defined polynomial in the neighbourhood of tht:' restoring-force comer. It is proved that the polynomial can be tangential to both sides of the comer in any required order of smoothness and that the maximal error can be less than any desired quantity. One may expect, therefore, that the bifurcation analysis to the smoothed system give approximate results for the original system. The numerical simulations did support the expectation in most cases, but sometimes new phenomena were observed, which cannot be explained using the theory of smoothed dynamic systems.

Abstract:In mechanical transmission, a gear-pair system with backlash, transmission error and time-dependent mess stiffness is a nonlinear vibration system which exhibits some complicated dynamic phenomena. To reveal this nonlinear feature is of benefit to analyze the vibration of the system and to control the shock and the noise of transmission systems. This paper investigates the behavior of periodic bifurcation and chaotic motion in gear-pair system involving backlash and design load. The equation of motion in this system is established in a strongly nonlinear form that is a piece-wise linear system. In some typical parameter regions the bifurcation diagrams, the chaotic time history and the Poincare maps are acquired with numerical simulation method,in the meanwhile, the effects of frequency ratio and force ratio on double-period bifurcation response of the system are also discussed. It is shown that the evolution process of the single period solution of the gear-pair system through double-period route to chaos. Finally the effect of the damping parameter on the system periodic bifurcation is investigated.

Abstract:This paper describes a new approach to study the nonlinear dynamical behaviors of a belt-driven two-coupled friction oscillator. First, using Buckingham's pi theorem, several dimensionless and physically meaningful parameters are derived. Their relationships with the steady state responses of the system are revealed through numerical simu-lations. Then a new mapping tool named as sticking phase plot is developed to record the transition process of stick-slip motion. It intuitively shows how bifurcation occurs in sticking region and transforms the dynamical responses. The bifurcation diagrams of the system are obtained by sweeping the dimensionless parameters. Some extraordinary bifurcation phenomena are observed in this system. By using sticking phase plot, it is found that the bifurcations can be broadly divided into four main categories: the Border-Collision Bifurcation, the Grazing-Sliding Bifurcation, the Multi-Sliding Bifurcation, and the Fixed-Point Bifurcation. New nonlinear phenomena are found herein, including chaos caused by the Border-Collision Bifurcation and the Sliding Bifurcations. The local and the global changes caused by the Fixed-Point bifurcation are also observed. In numerical simulation, we adopted the LVIM method proposed by the authors, which can be used to integrate non-smooth systems very accurately and efficiently. (C) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:This paper deals with the long term behavior of periodically excited mechanical systems consisting of linear components and local nonlinearities. The number of degrees of freedom of the linear components is reduced by applying a component mode synthesis technique. Lyapunov exponents are used to identify the character of the long term behavior of a nonlinear dynamic system, which may be periodic, quasi-periodic or chaotic. Periodic solutions are calculated efficiently by solving a two-point boundary value problem using finite differences. Floquet multipliers are calculated to determine the local stability of these solutions and to identify local bifurcation points. The methods presented are applied to a beam system supported by a one-sided linear spring, which reveals very rich, complex dynamic behavior.

Abstract:The non-linear response of a two-degree-of-freedom nonlinear vibrating system subject to parametric excitation is examined for a two to one internal resonance and one-half subharmonic parametric resonance. The method of multiple scales is used to determine the amplitude-and phase-modulation equations to the first order. The coupled mode steady-state solutions are obtained from the trivial solution through pitchfork bifurcation. The Melnikov method is used to study the global bifurcation behavior while the critical parameter is determined for which the dynamical system possesses a Smale horseshoe type of chaos.

Abstract:In order to study the nonlinear characteristics of a mechanical dynamometer, a mathematic model is established using the Lagrangian method. The adequate and essential conditions for homoclinic orbit and periodical orbit of the system are discussed using the model. A bifurcation diagram of the external excitation is obtained through simulation. Simulation results clearly show the transformation from periodic motion to chaotic motion. The system can enter the chaotic motion through the quasi-periodic route; Poincare sections and phase portraits validate the doubling bifurcation motion of the system. Therefore, typical nonlinear vibration can be found in this system, especially when the excitation frequency is changing between its lower and higher values. For the purpose of improving the measuring accuracy, the parameters of the mechanical dynamometer should be designed to keep the system in periodic and quasi-periodic motions.

Abstract:Under harmonic excitation, a bistable Nonlinear Energy Sink (BNES) manifests diverse attractors, rendering the vibration characteristics highly intricate. This study employs the first-order harmonic balance method to analyze a two-degree-of-freedom system with a BNES, predicting the count of periodic attractors within and across potential wells. Formulas for the Fold bifurcation curves are deduced to anticipate the quantity of cross-well period responses and intra-well period responses under varying frequencies and amplitudes of excitation. The interrelation between the Fold bifurcation curves and the shapes of frequency response curves (FRC) is demonstrated, with a discussion on the shape and quantity of Fold bifurcation curves under diverse system parameters. The connecting points of the inter-well FRCs and the cross-well FRCs are resolved, yielding a Pitchfork bifurcation curve. The influence of system parameters on the shape of the Pitchfork bifurcation curve is scrutinized. Utilizing the acquired bifurcation curves allows for predicting the count of periodic attractors under different harmonic excitations. Due to the impact of various local and global bifurcations, the actual number of stable attractors may deviate from the predicted value, and the system may even lack stable periodic attractors. The stability of periodic attractors is assessed using Lyapunov exponents, unveiling the accurate predictive capability of bifurcation curves within certain parameter ranges. Corresponding to bifurcation curve predictions, under specific excitations, the system may exhibit both cross-well and intra-well periodic attractors, multiple cross-well periodic attractors, or multiple intra-well periodic attractors. While comprehensively predicting all periodic attractors remains challenging, the bifurcation curves serve as a valuable tool for identifying potential multiple steady-state responses during NES optimization. The prediction of cross-well motion contributes to designing a more efficient energy-harvesting NES.
Bifurcation analysis of quasi-periodic orbits of mechanical systems with 1:2 internal resonance via spectral submanifolds

Abstract:A 1:2 internally resonant mechanical system can undergo secondary Hopf (Neimark-Sacker) bifurcations, resulting in a quasi-periodic response when the system is subject to harmonic excitation. While these quasi-periodic orbits have been observed in practice, their bifurcations are not well studied, especially in high-dimensional mechanical systems. This is mainly because of the challenges associated with the computation and bifurcation detection of these quasi-periodic motions. Here we present a computational framework to address these challenges via reductions on spectral submanifolds, which transforms quasi-periodic orbits of high-dimensional systems as limit cycles of four-dimensional reduced-order models. We apply the proposed framework to analyze bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits in several mechanical systems exhibiting 1:2 internal resonance, including a finite element model of a shallow-curved shell. We uncover local bifurcations such as period-doubling and saddle-node, as well as global bifurcations such as homoclinic connections, isolas, and simple bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits. We also observe cascades of period-doubling bifurcations of quasi-periodic orbits that eventually result in chaotic motions, as well as the coexistence of chaotic and quasi-periodic attractors. These findings elucidate the complex bifurcation mechanism of quasi-periodic orbits in 1:2 internally resonant systems.

Abstract:The bifurcation behaviors and chaotic vibrations of transmission visco-elastic belts were investigat- ed.An improved model of axially moving viseo-elastic beam with small stiffness was introduced;the nonlinear effects of deflection and material were considered simultaneously,the partial differential dynamical equations for the visco-elastic belt were established using elastic mechanics method.The method of Galerkin approach was applied to obtain the second-order nonlinear equations,which decoupled in time and space coordinates. The effect of the velocity perturbation of the belts was discussed emphatically.Numerical simulation method was used to yield the response of the system;the bifurcation figure and Poincaré map show that the belts may undergo periodic and chaotic motions around different equilibrium in certain parameter regions,and the chaotic motion will occur through period double bifurcation.

Abstract:International Journal of Structural Stability and Dynamics, Ahead of Print. The excited, one-degree-of-freedom mechanical system with symmetrical and asymmetrical rigid constraints, is investigated in a two-parameter bifurcation plane [math]–[math]. Decision conditions for the chattering-sticking motion of the system are given. The analytical solution of [math] periodic motion and the linearization matrix of the Poincaré map are derived. The bifurcation characteristics of the [math] periodic motion are analyzed theoretically by the position of the eigenvalue passing through the unit circle. The multiplicity and evolution of periodic motions of the system with symmetrical and asymmetrical constraints are explained by zones of their occurrence and stability in the plane of [math]–[math]. Special attention is given to the complex dynamics near the singular points [math] and the mutual transfer law of adjacent [math] motion. The singular point is a codimensional-2 grazing bifurcation point related to [math] type, and also a codimensional-2 flip-fold bifurcation point related to [math] motion. The mutual evolution of adjacent [math] motion is reversible only at the singular point [math]. For symmetrical system, motions [math], [math], [math] and their evolutions emerge in the ligulate zone. For an asymmetrical system, a cluster of abnormal basic groups gathers in the low-frequency. The symmetrical constraint model is a special case of the asymmetrical model. The obtained results have reference value for reducing component wear, noise, and improving the operational reliability of mechanical systems with clearance couplings.

Abstract:In this paper, a control method developed earlier is employed to consider controlling bifurcations in a class of Lorenz-like systems. Particular attention is focused on Hopf bifurcation control via linear and nonlinear stability analyses. The Lorenz system, Chen system and Lu system are studied in detail. Simple feedback controls are designed for controlling the stability of equilibrium solutions, limit cycles and chaotic motions. All formulas are derived in general forms including the system parameters. Computer simulation results are presented to confirm the analytical predictions.

Abstract:The dynamic behaviors of two-degree-of-freedom Duffing system with cubic coupled terms are studied. First, the steady-state responses in principal resonance and internal resonance of the system are analyzed by the multiple scales method. Then, the bifurcation structure is investigated as a function of the strength of the driving force F . In addition to the familiar routes to chaos already encountered in unidimensional Duffing oscillators, this model exhibits symmetry-breaking, period-doubling of both types and a great deal of highly periodic motion and Hopf bifurcation, many of which occur more than once. We explore the chaotic behaviors of our model using three indicators, namely the top Lyapunov exponent, Poincaré cross-section and phase portrait, which are plotted to show the manifestation of coexisting periodic and chaotic attractors.

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, we introduce a curvilinear coordinate transformation to study the bifurcation of periodic solutions from a 2-degree-of-freedom Hamiltonian system, when it is perturbed in $${\textbf{R}}^{m+4}$$ R m + 4 , where m represents any positive integer. The extended Melnikov function is obtained by constructing a Poincaré map on the curvilinear coordinate frame of the trajectory of the unperturbed system. Then the criteria for bifurcation of periodic solutions of these Hamiltonian systems under isochronous and non-isochronous conditions are obtained. As for its application, we study the number of periodic solutions of a composite piezoelectric cantilever rectangular plate system whose averaged equation can be transformed into a $$(2+4)$$ ( 2 + 4 ) -dimensional dynamical system. Furthermore, under the two resonance conditions of 1:1 and 1:2, we obtain the periodic solution numbers of this system with the variation of parametric excitation coefficient $$p_1.$$ p 1 .

Abstract:This paper focuses on the classification of the bifurcation modes of a Duffing system under the combined excitations of constant force and harmonic excitation. The Harmonic Balance method combined with the arc-length continuation is used to obtain the periodic solutions of the system, and the Floquet theory is employed to analyze the stability of the corresponding solutions. Accordingly, the frequency-response curves affected respectively by the constant force and the magnitude of the harmonic excitation are analyzed to show the basic dynamical properties of the system. Afterwards, the bifurcation investigations are carried out with the aid of the two-state variable singularity method. It is derived that there are a total of six different types of bifurcation modes due to the effects of the constant force and the magnitude of the harmonic excitation. At last, the effects of the nonlinearity parameter and the damping ratio on the bifurcation modes of the system are also discussed. The results obtained in this paper extend the findings in reference that the system can have markedly three types of frequency-response curves: with only one solution, or with maximum three or five solutions for a certain excitation frequency, and contribute to a better understanding of the significant influence of the constant force.

Abstract:In order to solve the severe vibration of rotor within some parameter domains under the action due to the nonlinear oil film force and with necessary consideration accorded with the characteristics of a nonlinear rotor-bearing system, the chaos of an elastic rotor system using short-bearing model and the variation of some parameters are analysed by using the dynamics and nonlinear dynamics theory with Poincaré maps and numerical integral method. The results of calculation show that the system may undergo doubling bifurcation and quasiò-periodic motions. In some typical parameter regions, the bifurcation diagrams, the time histories, the phase portrait, the Poincaré maps and the frequency spectrums of the system are acquired with numerical integral method. They demonstrate some motional state by the system. The results of analysis provide theoretical reference for designing and safe operating of this system.

Abstract:The vibration-driven locomotion system subject to the Coulomb dry friction is a typical multi-degree-of-freedom piecewise-smooth dynamical system with rigid-body displacement. Rather than ignoring the sticking behaviors caused by dry friction in previous studies, this paper focuses on the steady-state dynamics and the discontinuity-induced sliding bifurcations of a non-smooth three-module vibration-driven system. It is shown that the presence of sticking partially invalidates the averaging method and prevents an accurate prediction of the locomotion performance. As a result, numerical methods are employed in this research, which not only gives the distribution pattern of the average steady-state velocity with respect to the actuation phase differences but also elucidates its variation trend with respect to the actuation frequency and friction anisotropism, revealing the significance of the resonance effect and phase coordination for locomotion performance enhancement. Subsequently, this paper focuses on the stick–slip dynamics associated with the non-smooth boundaries induced by dry friction. Through comprehensive numerical calculations, we identify four different types of stick–slip motions and their distributed zones, whose boundaries are essentially the sliding bifurcation curves. Analytical expressions of these bifurcation curves are derived by means of the least-square regression, and they together constitute a bifurcation diagram for a given actuation and environment conditions. Each time a sliding bifurcation curve is traversed, the stick–slip trajectories experience qualitative changes. We also systematically reveal the evolution of the bifurcation diagram with the actuation frequency and friction anisotropism.

Abstract:This work delves into the investigation of static bifurcation control and vibration reduction of a two-degree-of-freedom dynamical system. The system under study simulates the lateral oscillations of rotating machinery and encompasses both cubic and quadratic nonlinearities. The nonlinear system is augmented with a magnetic bearing actuator, incorporating a novel control strategy that combines two first-order filters. The system model is derived based on classical mechanics and electromagnetic theories. Then, an analytical solution is extracted for the obtained dynamical model. The solutions obtained have been utilized to visualize the static bifurcations of the system in both two and three-dimensional spaces, using various system parameters as bifurcation variables. The mono-stable and multiple-stable solution regions have been distinguished in two-parameter space. Subsequently, an investigation has been conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of the introduced control technique in eliminating the catastrophic bifurcation of the rotor and suppressing undesirable vibrations. Furthermore, as a precautionary measure, the impact of the controller's sudden malfunction on the stability of the system was explored. The main findings revealed that the implemented control approach effectively eliminates dangerous bifurcation characteristics and induces the nonlinear rotor to exhibit a response like a linear system with minimal vibration amplitudes. Furthermore, it was observed that the abrupt failure of the controller does not affect the stability of the system; however, the nonlinearities regain dominance in the system's response
