Abstract:A visible light communication (VLC)-based high-accuracy indoor positioning system is proposed and demonstrated. In this system, the light-emitting diode identification (LED-ID) indicating the position information of the LED can be transmitted to the receiver by the illumination LED through VLC. In the meantime, with the aid of a camera and angular sensors of the mobile device, a coordinate transform can be employed to calculate the relative position between the receiver and the reference LED so that the position of the receiver can be determined. Finally, the experimental results show that 2-cm positioning accuracy can be achieved and the simulation results indicate that the positioning error can be limited within 4.7 cm when the accuracy of angular sensors is 1 deg. Abstract:This paper proposes an indoor positioning system based on visible light communication technology and intelligent terminals which equipped with image sensors, electronic compasses and gyroscope sensors. Each LED source is modulated with unique codes which represent its absolute location. The receiving terminal gets the LED’s absolute location through the optical link and capture the scene image with image sensor simultaneously. The electronic compass and the gyroscope sensor measure the terminal’s yaw angle, pitch angle and roll angle in real time, together with the scene image, relative position of the terminal and the LED light source can be calculated. Combine the absolute location of the LED light source with the relative position, the system is able to estimate the terminal’s position within the accuracy of about 2 centimeter. Position accuracy can be improved by using high-precision camera and attitude sensors.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC), as a promising future wireless communication technology, has been considered as an attractive solution for indoor positioning systems. In this paper, a novel indoor visible light positioning system is proposed, where the Gray code is utilized for the positioning identification (ID). Compared with the existing light emitting diode (LED)-ID systems, the proposed scheme can deal with the overlapping area problem where the target receiver detects multiple positioning IDs from neighboring LED lamps. Furthermore, the alternating current in the power line is used for time synchronization to facilitate the indoor localization. Experimental demonstration are carried out to verify the feasibility of the proposed scheme, which shows that the proposed system can provide superior performance with large positioning range and low implementation complexity.

Abstract:As a combination of lighting and optical communication, to broaden the spectrum resource, green energy-saving new wireless communication technology, LED visible light communication(VLC) technology based application in indoor positioning system has recently become a very hot research topic. The domestic and foreign research on LED visible light communication in indoor positioning technology is divided into non-imaging positioning technology and imaging positioning technology. Among them, there are four non-imaging positioning technology methods: triangulation method, scenario analysis, proximity method and hybrid techniques with VLC and Ad Hoc wireless network. This article provides an overview of these two technologies, and their performance are compared. Finally the outlook for future research are discussed.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel indoor positioning scheme based on visible light communication（VLC）.A new indoor VLC positioning scheme using fingerprint database with multi-parameters have been raised.We conduct simulation and experimental research on the illumination intensity distribution of several direction parameters.In the experiment,four LED matrixes are identified by LED-ID with room dimensions of 3.75×4.00×2.7 m~3.The results show that the mean of the location error is 0.22 m in the receiving plane,verifying the correctness and feasibility of the positioning scheme.

Abstract:Recently, many technologies such as Wi-Fi, camera, visible light, simultaneous localization and mapping(SLAM) are utilized to achieve high accuracy indoor localization. Using the visible light communication(VLC) technology, we can modulate light-emitting diode (LED) lights so that it can be adapted for localization as well as illumination, which is low-cost and practical. In this paper, we propose a new hybrid method, whose principle is using RGB-D camera to recognize the characteristics of the circumstance as the assistance of VLC positioning. The computer vision technology is employed to process the information captured by the RGB-D camera to help VLC positioning system derive a high accuracy location. Experiment results show that our sensor fusion positioning system is computationally efficient, and it can achieve one centimeter precision.
A High-Precision, Real-Time, and Robust Indoor Visible Light Positioning Method Based on Mean Shift Algorithm and Unscented Kalman Filter

Abstract:Visible light positioning (VLP) is a promising technology for indoor navigation. However, most studies of VLP systems nowadays only focus on positioning accuracy, whereas robustness and real-time ability are often overlooked, which are all indispensable in actual VLP situations. Thus, we propose a novel VLP method based on mean shift (MS) algorithm and unscented Kalman filter (UKF) using image sensors as the positioning terminal and a Light Emitting Diode (LED) as the transmitting terminal. The main part of our VLP method is the MS algorithm, realizing high positioning accuracy with good robustness. Besides, UKF equips the mean shift algorithm with the capacity to track high-speed targets and improves the positioning accuracy when the LED is shielded. Moreover, a LED-ID (the identification of the LED) recognition algorithm proposed in our previous work was utilized to locate the LED in the initial frame, which also initialized MS and UKF. Furthermore, experiments showed that the positioning accuracy of our VLP algorithm was 0.42 cm, and the average processing time per frame was 24.93 ms. Also, even when half of the LED was shielded, the accuracy was maintained at 1.41 cm. All these data demonstrate that our proposed algorithm has excellent accuracy, strong robustness, and good real-time ability.

Abstract:There is a growing demand for indoor positioning systems (IPSs) in a wide range of applications. However, traditional solutions such as GPS face many technical challenges. In recent years, a promising alternative has been emerging, the visible light communication (VLC)-based IPS, which offers a combination of high accuracy, low cost, and energy efficiency. This article presents a comprehensive review of VLC-based IPSs, providing a tutorial-like overview of the system. It begins by comparing various positioning systems and providing background information on their inherent limitations. Experimental results have demonstrated that VLC-based systems can achieve localization accuracy to within 10 cm in controlled environments. The mechanisms of VLC-based IPSs are then discussed, including a comprehensive examination of their performance metrics and underlying assumptions. The complexity, operating range, and efficiency of VLC-based IPSs are examined by analyzing factors such as channel modeling, signal processing, and localization algorithms. To optimize VLC-based IPSs, various strategies are explored, including the design of efficient modulation schemes, the development of advanced encoding and decoding algorithms, the implementation of adaptive power control, and the application of state-of-the-art localization algorithms. In addition, system parameters are carefully examined. These include LED placement, receiver sensitivity, and transmit power. Their impact on energy efficiency and localization accuracy is highlighted. Altogether, this paper serves as a comprehensive guide to VLC IPSs, providing in-depth insights into their vast potential and the challenges that they present.

Abstract:<p>In light of the problem of low precision and time consuming in indoor three-dimensional positioning of visible light communication (VLC), we propose an indoor three-dimensional positioning system of VLC based on improved immune particle swarm optimization (IIMPSO) algorithm. To reduce the influence of reflection, we select the optimal field of view by analyzing the indoor multipath effect, and improve the positioning model in the state of inclination. Moreover, we use Kalman filter algorithm to decrease the influence of environmental interference on the received power. Then, we apply IIMPSO algorithm to the indoor VLC three-dimensional positioning system to improve the positioning precision and convergence speed. The simulation results indicate that the average positioning error is 3.12 cm, and the convergence time is 2.03 s. Compared with existing positioning systems, the new proposed three-dimensional positioning system are significantly improved in the positioning precision and convergence speed.</p>

Abstract:A unidirectional Visible Light Communication (VLC) system has the potential to serve as an Indoor Positioning System (IPS). However, it is important to note that many existing VLC IPS setups rely on keeping LED lights switched on, which can lead to energy wastage when indoor lighting is unnecessary during daylight hours. Additionally, most indoor Visible Light Positioning (VLP) research has focused on 2D localization, assuming a fixed receiver height. This approach tends to overlook the positional inaccuracies that can arise due to variations in height. In this paper, to address these concerns, a 3D IPS is proposed. This system employs multiple transmitters and a single receiver, utilizing a Dark Light Visible Light Communication (DL-VLC) system. This innovative approach ensures the functionality of IPSs even when LEDs are turned "OFF" resulting in more efficient energy usage. The results of the investigation indicate that the positioning error remains within approximately 3 cm when the receiver is positioned at a height of 2.4 m, assuming standard room dimensions, which is in a fair agreement with previously published work.

Abstract:We optimize an image sensor-based indoor visible light positioning (VLP) system by improving the positioning algorithm. Specifically, we derive a close-form expression to determine the receiver’s position and orientation using the singular value decomposition (SVD) technique, which speeds up the positioning process and enhances the robustness. Simulation results show that the proposed SVD-based noniterative positioning algorithm is 50–80 times faster than the conventional iterative Levenberg–Marquardt-based algorithm and avoids the possible failures caused by the bad initial guesses. Meanwhile, we theoretically investigate the VLP system by deriving the Cramer–Rao lower bound and the root mean square error bound as the positioning accuracy limit and study the impact of system parameters on the positioning error. Finally, we experimentally evaluate the performance of the improved VLP system. It achieves highly robust and fast 3-D positioning with centimeter-level accuracy.

Abstract:Visible light positioning (VLP) is an accurate indoor positioning technology that uses luminaires as transmitters. In particular, circular luminaires are a common source type for VLP, which are typically treated only as point sources for positioning, while ignoring their geometry characteristics. In this paper, the arc feature of the circular luminaire and the coordinate information obtained via visible light communication (VLC) are jointly used for positioning, and a novel perspective arcs approach is proposed for VLC-enabled indoor positioning. The proposed approach does not rely on any inertial measurement unit and has no tilted angle limitation at the user. First, a VLC assisted perspective circle and arc algorithm (V-PCA) is proposed for a scenario in which a complete luminaire and an incomplete one can be captured by the user. Based on plane and solid geometry theory, the relationship between the luminaire and the user is exploited to estimate the orientation and the coordinate of the luminaire in the camera coordinate system. Then, the pose and location of the user in the world coordinate system are obtained by single-view geometry theory. Considering the cases in which parts of VLC links are blocked, an anti-occlusion VLC assisted perspective arcs algorithm (OA-V-PA) is proposed. In OA-V-PA, an approximation method is developed to estimate the projection of the luminaire’s center on the image and, then, to calculate the pose and location of the user. Simulation results show that the proposed indoor positioning algorithm can achieve a 90th percentile positioning accuracy of around 10 cm. Moreover, an experimental prototype is implemented to verify the feasibility. In the established prototype, a fused image processing method is proposed to simultaneously obtain the VLC information and the geometric information. Experimental results in the established prototype show that the average positioning accuracy is less than 5 cm for different tilted angles of the user.

Abstract:A high-precision indoor positioning method based on LED and image communication is proposed,which can achieve high-precision and small-disturbance indoor positioning with low cost and wide applications.The camera is used to receive the identity information added on the LED light for the absolute position of the LED.And then,the absolute position of the camera can be calculated combined with data of the attitude sensor on the receiver.Results of the test experiment based on the method show that the positioning accuracy can be achieved within centimeter scale,and the receiver can be placed on most intelligent terminals just by software.

Abstract:Visible light positioning and computer vision-based localization have the potential to be cost-effective technologies for accurate indoor localization. However, the feasibility of existing methods in this domain is limited. In this paper, a novel visible light communication (VLC)-assisted perspective-four-line algorithm (V-P4L) is proposed for practical indoor localization. The basic idea of V-P4L is to jointly use VLC and computer vision techniques to achieve high localization accuracy regardless of LED height differences. In particular, the space-domain information is first exploited to estimate the orientation and coordinate information of a single rectangular LED luminaire in the camera coordinate system based on plane geometry theory and solid geometry theory. Then, by using time-domain information transmitted by VLC and the estimated luminaire information, the proposed V-P4L can estimate the position and pose of the camera using single-view geometry theory and the linear least square (LLS) method. To further mitigate the effect of height differences among LEDs on localization accuracy, a correction algorithm based on the LLS method and a simple optimization method is proposed. Due to the combination of time- and space-domain information, V-P4L can achieve accurate localization using a single luminaire without limitation on the correspondences between the features and their projections in conventional perspective-n-line (PnL) algorithms. Simulation results show that the position error caused by the proposed V-P4L algorithm is always less than 15 cm and the orientation error is always less than 4° using popular indoor luminaires. Experimental results with real hardware show that the average position error is less than 3 cm under both similar and different heights for the LEDs.

Abstract:Visible light communication (VLC) technology can simultaneously support voice, video broadcast, indoor positioning, and other value-added services. In this paper, Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are used to transmit multiple high definition television programs with the combination of VLC as the access point and power line communication (PLC) as the network backbone to avoid the sophisticated networking issue. The positioning function was also implemented into this integrated VLC+PLC system by generate unique identification label sequences through Manchester coding for each LED, using on-off keying to modulate light to send label beacons, and utilizing photo-diode to receive it. Since the label information of the reference point is associated with each LED's location and stored in the server database using passive positioning as an example, when the target point is within the communication range of a reference point, it will receive the optical signal transmitted by this particular reference point and the target point can be located by the server. The video broadcast service and the indoor label positioning within VLC+PLC system are independent services needing different transmission schemes [1]. In this paper, a novel scheme is proposed to integrate the video broadcast service and indoor label positioning into one LED, which can support these two services at the same time.

Abstract:The growing demand for location-based services in areas like virtual reality, robot control, and navigation has intensified the focus on indoor localization. Visible light positioning (VLP), leveraging visible light communications (VLC), becomes a promising indoor positioning technology due to its high accuracy and low cost. This paper provides a comprehensive survey of VLP systems. In particular, since VLC lays the foundation for VLP, we first present a detailed overview of the principles of VLC. Then, we provide an in-depth overview of VLP algorithms. The performance of each positioning algorithm is also compared in terms of various metrics such as accuracy, coverage, and orientation limitation. Beyond the physical layer studies, the network design for a VLP system is also investigated, including multi-access technologies, resource allocation, and light-emitting diode (LED) placements. Next, the applications of the VLP systems are overviewed. Finally, this paper outlines open issues, challenges, and opportunities for the research field. In a nutshell, this paper constitutes the first holistic survey on VLP from state-of-the-art studies to practical uses.

Abstract:This research presents a detailed methodology for indoor positioning using visible light communication (VLC) technology, focusing on overcoming the limitations of traditional satellite-based navigation systems. The system is based on an optical positioning framework that integrates trilateration techniques with a semi-spherical array of photodiodes, designed to enhance both positional accuracy and orientation estimation. The system effectively estimates the receiver's position and orientation with high precision by utilizing multiple white-light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as transmitters and leveraging angular diversity. The proposed method achieves an average position error of less than 3 cm and an angular accuracy within 10 degrees, demonstrating its robustness even in environments with obstructed line of sight. These results highlight the system's potential for significant indoor positioning accuracy and reliability improvements.

Abstract:Abstract Visible light communication (VLC) is an emerging optical communication technology, and indoor positioning of moving target devices is one of most important issues in the VLC system. In this study, we focused on LED base station location planning to improve the accuracy of the positioning method based on the received signal strength intensity (RSS) and the Kalman filter (KF). We developed a new base station location-planning scheme called equilateral triangle distribution. We proved theoretically that the equilateral triangle distribution scheme reduced the positioning error area when compared with the rectangular distribution scheme. The simulation results showed that the measuring error of the equilateral triangle distribution method using KF was less than 5 cm, even when the receiver was located at the boundary of the room. Our method verified that the VLC indoor positioning accuracy can be improved when LED base stations are distributed according to our equilateral triangle distribution scheme.

Abstract:We explore the use of smartphones to decode data transmitted from LEDs to smartphone cameras in visible light communication (VLC) applied to indoor positioning applications. The LEDs—modified to enable rapid on-off keying—transmit identification codes or optically encoded location data imperceptible to human perception. Equipped with a camera, the smartphone employs a single framed image to detect the presence of the luminaires in the image, decode their transmitted identifiers or locations, and determine the smartphone's position and orientation relative to the luminaires. The camera captures and processes images continuously. The following fundamental issues are addressed in this research: (i) analyzing the camera parameters on smartphones that affect data decoding results; (ii) exploiting the rolling shutter effect of the CMOS image sensor to receive multiple bits of data encoded in the optical communication line with a single frame shot; (iii) advancing research in developing algorithms to process data from multiple LEDs simultaneously. We conduct experiments to evaluate and analyze feasibility, as well as the challenges of the design, through scenarios varying in distance, transmission frequency, and data length.
