Abstract:As a typical kind of two-dimensional transition metal carbides, nitrides and/or carbonitrides (MXene), Ti3C2Tx has attracted extensive attention in optoelectronic field owing to their outstanding thermal, optoelectronic, and nonlinear optical properties. Ti3C2Tx has been widely used as saturable absorber (SA) for achieving ultrafast pulses, whereas the influence of recovery time on its nonlinear optical properties as SA in laser needs further exploration. Herein, the ultrafast dynamics and nonlinear optical properties of Ti3C2Tx are investigated by the methods of transient absorption and balanced twin-detector measurements. According to the experimental results, Ti3C2Tx has a bleaching recovery time more than 160 ps, resulting in a low saturation intensity. The prepared Ti3C2Tx is utilized as SA to achieve Q-switched pulses at 1- and 1.5-μm bands. This study demonstrates that ultrafast dynamics has a significant impact on adjusting and optimizing nonlinear optical parameters of MXenes, as well as designing new photonic devices.

Abstract:Since the first discovery of Ti3C2 in 2011, two-dimensional (2D) transition-metal carbides, carbonitrides and nitrides, known as MXenes, have attracted significant attention. Due to their outstanding electronic, optical, mechanical, and thermal properties, versatile structures and surface chemistries, Ti3C2 MXenes have emerged as new candidates with great potential for applications in optoelectronic devices, such as photovoltaics, photodetectors and photoelectrochemical devices. The excellent metallic conductivity, high anisotropic carrier mobility, good structural and chemical stabilities, high optical transmittance, excellent mechanical strength, tunable work functions, and wide range of optical absorption properties of Ti3C2 MXene nanostructures are the key to their success in a number of electronic and photonic device applications. Herein, we summarize the fundamental properties and preparation of pure Ti3C2 MXenes, functionalized Ti3C2 MXenes and their hybrid nanocomposites, as well as their optoelectronic applications. In the end, the perspective and current challenges of Ti3C2 MXenes toward the development of advanced MXene-based nanostructures are briefly discussed for future optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) carbides of transition metals, so called “MXenes”, maintain excellent optical properties and unique layer stacking form via hydrogen bonds in contrast to other low-dimensional materials. These promising features have attracted increasingly research interest in the field of ultrafast photonics. In this work, titanium carbide (Ti3C2T x ) and tantalum carbide (Ta4C3T x ), as two promising MXene materials for photonic applications, are experimentally synthesized by the ultrasound-assisted liquid phase exfoliation technique. The morphology of prepared few-layer Ti3C2T x and Ta4C3T x has been systematically characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis. Density functional theory is performed to obtain their electronic band structures, demonstrating metallic properties and verifying their optical absorption at 1 μm. Their tempting optical modulation properties for multi-gigahertz pulsed laser emission are demonstrated by using them as saturable absorbers in a waveguide laser cavity. Particularly, high-performance Q-switched mode-locked lasers with/without laser mirrors are realized based on the hybrid waveguide laser configuration, delivering 1 μm laser pulses with durations as short as 30 ps. The results presented in this work show the great potential of metallic MXenes and waveguide structures for applications in functional photonic devices.

Abstract:Titanium carbide (Ti 2 C), a new two-dimensional material named MXenes, has attracted interest due to its potential applications in numerous fields. Of the many unique characteristics of Ti 2 C MXene, its nonlinear properties are attractive for optoelectronic applications, specifically for ultrafast laser generation. In this work, a Ti 2 C MXene was fabricated by etching a MAX phase precursor titanium aluminum carbide (Ti 2 AlC) using a mixture of lithium fluoride and hydrochloric acid, eliminating the risk of using the harmful hydrofluoric acid. The Ti 2 C MXene was prepared in solution form and then dropped onto a reduced core diameter of tapered fiber before being used as a saturable absorber (SA). The SA device was inserted into a thulium-doped fiber laser to generate stable mode-locked pulses at a center wavelength of 1951 nm with a pulse width of 1.67 ps. The mode-locked laser was highly stable when tested over time, with peak optical power fluctuations of as little as 0.005 dB measured. The results show that the Ti 2 C MXene exhibit outstanding performance for ultrafast laser generation.

Enhanced Optical Absorption of Fe-, Co- and Ni- Decorated Ti3C2 MXene: A First-Principles Investigation

Abstract:Surface functionalization on novel transition metal carbides Ti3C2 MXene has been demonstrated to be effective strategy to broaden potential application. Herein, the effect of surface decoration of transition magnetic metals (Fe-, Co-, Ni-) on the electronic structure and optical properties of Ti3C2 MXene is studied using first principle calculations. Energy band structures and corresponding density of electronic states investigations have shown that interlamellar spacing between Ti-layer and C-layer, as well as specific surface area, is inclined to expand after surface decoration. Besides, obvious peaks of d orbit have been observed, and demonstrated to play a dominant role in electronic states in Fe-, Co-, Ni–Ti3C2 composite. More importantly, surface decoration of transition magnetic metal Fe-, Co-, and Ni-could greatly promote optical absorption coefficient of Ti3C2 nanomaterials, covering ultraviolet region, visible region and infrared region. The increment rate reaches 50% within visible and ultraviolet region for Ni–Ti3C2 composite, while the increment rate of Fe-substituted Ti3C2 exhibits even greater than 100%. The remarkable enhanced optical absorbing properties over wide spectral region may be associated with interlamellar space expansion accompanied with more active sites and increased electronic mobility. All these findings are considered to broaden practical application of low-dimensional Ti3C2 nanomaterial towards photoelectric devices.

Abstract:Dynamics of photoinduced species, as a key parameter for nanomaterials plays a significantly role in the performance of optoelectronic devices. In this work, the origin of broadband optical response for the emerging Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene is revealed by transient spectroscopic analysis. From ultraviolet to infrared, the steady-state and transient optical responses present wavelength-related features. The carrier lifetime is found to change from femtosecond to nanosecond time scale dominated by various photoinduced species, i.e., carrier and surface plasmon. The unique optoelectronic character enables photodetection. This fundamental study on carrier, plasmon dynamics, and application in photodetection is helpful for exploring MXene-based optoelectronic devices.

Abstract:Materials with excellent absorption performance of electromagnetic waves can efficiently transform electromagnetic energy to heat energy and are suitable for modern applications, including the bolometer and electromagnetic interference (EMI) shields with minimal thickness. In recent years, two-dimensional (2D) transition metal carbides (MXenes) were identified as efficient electromagnetic wave absorbers that could provide opportunities for constructing chip-level smarter optoelectronic devices. Here, we experimentally demonstrated a smarter localized supercontinuum laser with quantum dots coupled by active Ti3C2 MXene nanoflakes. By employing the transformation of electromagnetic energy to heat energy of Ti3C2 MXene nanoflakes, broadband nonlinear optical scattering with wavelength insensitivity was triggered to generate the localized laser cavity for supercontinuum lasing of aqueous-phase quantum dots. This smarter supercontinuum laser is expected to not only have promising applications in some modern equipment such as nanofluidic-based biological and chemical monitoring and sensing, ultraprecision metrology, and optical coherence tomography but also provide a novel design strategy for the next-generation optoelectronics.

Abstract:Despite the emerging interest in research and development of Ti3CN MXene nanosheet (NS)-based optoelectronic devices, there is still a lack of in-depth studies of the underlying photophysical processes, like carrier relaxation dynamics and nonlinear photon absorption, operating in such devices, hindering their further and precise design. In this paper, we attempt to remedy the situation by fabricating few-layer Ti3CN NSs via combining selective etching and molecular intercalation and by investigating the carrier relaxation possesses and broadband nonlinear optical responses via transient absorption and Z-scan techniques. These results are complemented by first-principle theoretical analyses of the optical properties. Both saturable absorption and reverse saturable absorption phenomena are observed due to multiphoton absorption effects. The analysis of these results adds to the understanding of the basic photophysical processes, which is anticipated to be beneficial for the further design of MXene-based devices.

Abstract:Nanostructures of Ti3C2Tx, one of the members of the MXenes family, have been successfully prepared by chemical etching of Al from Ti3AlC2 (MAX phase) using Hydrofluoric Acid (HF) for various etching durations at room temperature. The phase, morphological, structural, and chemical analysis was performed using XRD, FESEM, TEM, Raman, and X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The surface morphology of as-synthesized Ti3C2Tx (MXene) phase is characterized by stacked of layered sheets like structures. Field electron emission (FEE) was investigated at base pressure of 1 x 10-8 mbar. The pristine Ti3AlC2 (MAX) and Ti3C2Tx (MXene) nanosheets emitters showed values of turn-on field (defined at current density ~ 1 μA/cm2) as 4.18 and 1.67 V/μm, respectively. Furthermore, maximum emission current density of ~ 825 μA/cm2 was extracted from the MXene nanosheets emitter at an applied field of 3.60 V/μm, in contrast to ̴ 71 μA/cm2 drawn at 7.31 V/μm from the pristine MAX emitter. The MXene nanosheets emitter exhibited good emission current stabilities at pre-set values ~ 10 and 100 μA over 3 hours duration. Work function values of the MAX and MXene nanosheets emitters were measured using a retarding field analyzer, and found to be 4.4 and 3.6 eV, respectively. Extensive ab-initio simulations have been performed to provide structural and electronic properties, as well as for estimating the work function of Ti3C2 layered material. The estimated electronic density of states revealed its metallic character. The improved FEE performance exhibited by the 2D layered Ti3C2Tx (MXene) nanosheets emitter is attributed to its unique morphology characterized by high aspect ratio, metallic electronic properties and relatively lower work function.

Abstract:Abstract In recent years, MXene has become a hotspot because of its good conductivity, strong broadband absorption, and tunable band gap. In this contribution, 0D MXene Ti3C2Tx quantum dots are synthesized by a liquid exfoliation method and a wideband nonlinear optical response from 800 to 1550 nm is studied, which have a larger nonlinear absorption coefficient β of –(11.24 ± 0.14) × 10–2 cm GW–1. The carrier dynamic processes of 0D MXene are explored with ultrahigh time resolution nondegenerate transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy, which indicates that the TA signal reaches its maximum in 1.28 ps. Furthermore, 0D MXene is used to generate ultrashort pulses in erbium or ytterbium‐doped fiber laser cavity. High signal‐to‐noise (72 dB) femtosecond lasers with pulse durations as short as 170 fs with spectrum bandwidth of 14.8 nm are obtained. Finally, an ultranarrow fiber laser based on 0D MXene is also investigated and has a full width at half maximum of only 5 kHz, and the power fluctuation is less than 0.75% of the average power. The experimental works prove that 0D MXene is an excellent SA and has a promising application in ultrafast and ultranarrow photonics.

Abstract:Nanomaterials with broadband nonlinear responses have attracted wide attention in ultrafast photonics, which have proven to be reliable saturable absorbers to generate broadband pulses. In recent years, combining materials with different characteristics has also become a new research hotspot. Herein, two-dimensional MXene (Ti3C2T x ) and metal silver (Ag) nanoparticles were combined to form the Ag/MXene composite by the technique of layer-by-layer spraying with the hot-pressing method, enhancing the nonlinear absorption property of the composite. In addition, the Ag/MXene also exhibited broadband saturable absorption abilities in the measurement of the nonlinear transmittance from 1 to 2 μm. Therefore, the Ag/MXene composite was used as a saturable absorber to modulate pulses in lasers, where the Q-switched pulses based on Ag/MXene were realized in ytterbium-, erbium-, and thulium:holmium-doped fiber lasers for the first time, to the best of our knowledge. The performance of the output pulses including wavelength, power, and stability were also discussed in detail. This work provides more possibilities for the combination of different materials, which promotes the development of broadband lasers based on nanomaterials in the farther mid-infrared band.

Investigation of charge carrier dynamics in Ti3C2Tx MXene for ultrafast photonics applications

Abstract:The rapid advancement of nanomaterials has paved the way for various technological breakthroughs, and MXenes, in particular, have gained substantial attention due to their unique properties such as high conductivity, broad-spectrum absorption strength, and tunable band gap. This article presents the impact of the process parameters on the structural and optical properties of Ti3C2Tx MXene for application in ultrafast dynamics. XRD along with Raman spectroscopy studies, confirmed the synthesis of a single phase from their MAX phase Ti3AlC2. The complete etching of Al and increase in the interplanar distance is also observed on centrifugation at very high speed. The ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy used to understand the effect of centrifuge speed on the charge carrier dynamics and ultrafast spectrum of MXene displayed that the carrier lifetime is critically influenced by rotation per minute (rpm) e.g. faster decay lifetime at 10k rpm than 7k rpm. The electronic relaxation probed using the time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL) technique exhibits an average decay time of 5.13 ns and 5.35 ns at the 7k and 10k rpm, respectively, which confirms that the optical properties of the MXene are strongly affected by the centrifuge speed. The synthesized MXene at 10k rpm typically suggests that radiative processes due to longer decay lifetime and experiences fewer nonradiative losses, resulting in enhanced luminescence properties.

Abstract:MXenes as a kind of novel 2D transition metal carbon and/or nitrogen materials are commonly prepared by etching A‐group elements (mostly groups 13 or 14) from MAX phases. Owing to the excellent optical properties, MXenes have been widely used to realize ultrafast pulses in different lasers.
