Abstract:The covalent cross-linked structure imparts strong elasticity and environmental resistance to elastomers, while the irreversibility of covalent bonds restricts the recycling of rubbers. Integrating vitrimer chemistry into chemical cross-linked networks appears to be a charming method to combine the exciting properties of thermoplastics and thermosets. However, it is still a challenge to design a rubber vitrimer with robust mechanical properties. Here, inspired by supramolecular interactions associated with natural materials, we demonstrated a dual reversible cross-linked SBR vitrimer by introducing imine bonds and hydrogen bonding. The integration of hydrogen bonding endows the elastomer vitrimer with significantly improved strength and toughness without influencing the recycling ability. This work provides a simple and effective strategy in the design of elastomer vitrimers with robust mechanical properties and good recyclability.

Abstract:Three-dimensional (3D) printing has emerged as an attractive manufacturing technique because of its exceptional freedom in accessing geometrically complex customizable products. Its potential for mass manufacturing, however, is hampered by its low manufacturing efficiency (print speed) and insufficient product quality (mechanical properties). Recent progresses in ultra-fast 3D printing of photo-polymers1-5 have alleviated the issue of manufacturing efficiency, but the mechanical performance of typical printed polymers still falls far behind what is achievable with conventional processing techniques. This is because of the printing requirements that restrict the molecular design towards achieving high mechanical performance. Here we report a 3D photo-printable resin chemistry that yields an elastomer with tensile strength of 94.6 MPa and toughness of 310.4 MJ m-3, both of which far exceed that of any 3D printed elastomer6-10. Mechanistically, this is achieved by the dynamic covalent bonds in the printed polymer that allow network topological reconfiguration. This facilitates the formation of hierarchical hydrogen bonds (in particular, amide hydrogen bonds), micro-phase separation and interpenetration architecture, which contribute synergistically to superior mechanical performance. Our work suggests a brighter future for mass manufacturing using 3D printing. Three-dimensional photo-printable resin chemistry yields an elastomer with tensile strength of 94.6 MPa and toughness of 310.4 MJ m-3, both of which far exceed that of any three-dimensional printed elastomer.

Abstract:Elastomers with excellent mechanical properties are in substantial demand for various applications, but there is always a tradeoff between their mechanical strength and stretchability. For example, partially replacing strong covalent crosslinking by weak sacrificial bonds can enhance the stretchability but also usually decreases the mechanical strength. To surmount this inherent tradeoff, a supramolecular strategy of introducing a zipper-like sliding-ring mechanism in a hydrogen-bond-crosslinked polyurethane network is proposed. A very small amount (0.5 mol%) of an external additive (pseudo[2]rotaxane crosslinker) can dramatically increase both the mechanical strength and elongation of this polyurethane network by nearly one order of magnitude. Based on the investigation of the relationship between molecular structure and mechanical properties, this enhancement is attributable to a unique molecular-level zipper-like ring-sliding motion, which efficiently dissipates mechanical work in the solvent-free network. This research not only provides a distinct and general strategy for the construction of high-performance elastomers but also paves the way for the practical application of artificial molecular machines toward solvent-free polyurethane networks.

Abstract:Stretchable and autonomously self-healable elastomers with wide-ranging tunable mechanical properties have attracted increasing attention in various industries. To date, it continues to be a huge challenge to synthesize self-healing elastomers integrating extreme stretchability, relatively high mechanical modulus, and autonomous and rapid self-healing capability. Herein, we propose a novel covalent/supramolecular hybrid construction strategy, in which the covalent cross-links are responsible for providing high modulus and elasticity, while supramolecular cross-links realize extreme stretchability and rapid self-healing under room temperature depending on the ultrafast exchange kinetics of metal–ligand motifs and multicoordination modes. Abstract:The strength and toughness are two trade-off properties of a material, yet Nature can achieve strong and tough materials by introducing sacrificial bonds into a system. Here, we present a four-component multiblock copolymer (mBCP) approach toward strong and tough elastic fibers, by introducing terpyridine moieties into poly(ether ester) mBCP elastomers. After coordination with Fe(II), supramolecular cross-links are formed within the physically cross-linked thermoplastic elastomers. The toughening elastic fibers with a double-cross-linked network structure show high tensile strength (ca. 300 MPa) and toughness (ca. 100 MJ m–3). In addition, they display excellent resilience with enhanced self-healing properties. Abstract:Integrating stretchability, self-healability, and surface adhesive properties in a single material is attractive for expanding the applications in demanding fields. Herein, we have studied the metathesis kinetics of catechol-derived boronic esters and incorporated them into polyurethane (PU) networks to prepare a type of PU elastomeric vitrimers with excellent stretchability, healability, and adhesive properties. Two series of dynamic PU elastomers that have different cross-linking densities and varied fractions of catechol moieties were simply prepared by a solution casting method from the linear PUs containing pendent catechol groups and 1,4-phenylenediboronic acid. These elastomers possess excellent stretchability and moderate mechanical properties that can be readily manipulated by varying the crosslinking density and the number of residual catechol groups. Moreover, the elastomers are healable and reprocessable under mild conditions and show moderate adhesive capability. The effects of the cross-linking density and residual catechol fraction on the thermal relaxation profiles and adhesive strength of the elastomers were explored in detail. Finally, we have demonstrated the potential of this kind of dynamic PU elastomers for applications as stretchable, healable, and self-adhesive conducting composite materials.

Abstract:The long application life and stable performance of stretchable electronics have been putting forward requirements for both higher mechanical properties and better self‐healing ability of polymeric substrates. However, for self‐healing materials, simultaneously improving stretchability and robustness is still challenging. Here, by incorporating sliding crosslinker (polyrotaxanes) and hydrogen bonds into a polymer, a highly stretchable and self‐healable elastomer with good mechanical strength is achieved. The elastomer exhibits very high stretchability, such that it can be stretched to 2800% with a fracture strength of 1.05 MPa. Moreover, the elastomer can achieve nearly complete self‐healing (93%) at 55 °C. Next, tensile tests under different temperatures, step extension experiments, and in situ small angle X‐ray scattering confirm that the excellent stretchability is attributed to the combined effects of sliding cyclodextrins along guest chains and hydrogen bonds. Furthermore, a strain sensor by coating the single‐wall carbon nanotubes onto the surface of the elastic substrate is fabricated.

Abstract:Herein, a novel strategy has been developed for the preparation of high-performance conductive elastomers featuring long functional polymer cross-linkers. The macromolecular cross-linkers containing multi boronic ester bonds in the backbone were designed via thiol/acrylate reactions between poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) and a dithiol-containing boronic ester (BDB). The obtained PEG–BDB was copolymerized with n-butyl acrylate (n-BA) to provide PBA/PEG–BDB elastomers. The resultant elastomers exhibit combined desirable properties of high stretchability, low Young’s modulus, low hysteresis, and self-healing performance, simultaneously. To demonstrate their practical applications, sensors based on PBA/PEG–BDB were successfully attached onto diverse joints (wrist, elbow, and finger) of the puppet for real-time motion detection. What is more, the elastomer sensors could well recognize other human activities like writing. This work offers a new design strategy for flexible sensors by optimizing the cross-linked dimension with long functional polymer chains as cross-linkers.

Abstract:The preparation of high-performance stretchable electrodes is the main challenge in achieving stretchable lithium-ion batteries. The ideal solution is to use an extensible current collector with high conductivity; however, no related work has been reported yet. Commercial binders have difficulty withstanding tensile deformation and guaranteeing sufficient contact between active materials and current collectors. Here, stretchable electrodes are developed based on a poly(styrene)-b-poly(n-butyl acrylate)-poly(styrene)/single-walled carbon nanotube composite as an elastic current collector and poly(styrene)-bpoly( methyl acrylate)-poly(styrene) as an elastomeric binder. The relationship between the conductivity of the current collector and the electrode performance is revealed. It is found that when the conductivity of the stretchable current collector is higher than 10(-2) S cm(-1), the stretchable electrodes exhibit equivalent electrochemical performance to those prepared from rigid metal current collectors. 50% deformation can be reached which is enough for most wearable devices. With the decrease of carbon nanotube content, 80% deformation can be reached without badly sacrificing the performance. Stretchable electrodes that have been subjected to 100 stretching cycles display similar performance to the initial pre-stretched state, indicating that the electrode is stable and deforms reversibly. Based on their performance, stretchable current collectors may soon replace rigid metal ones in batteries used in stretchable electronics.

Abstract:It is a challenge to synthesize materials that possess the properties of biological muscles—strong, elastic and capable of self-healing. Herein we report a network of poly(dimethylsiloxane) polymer chains crosslinked by coordination complexes that combines high stretchability, high dielectric strength, autonomous self-healing and mechanical actuation. The healing process can take place at a temperature as low as −20 °C and is not significantly affected by surface ageing and moisture. The crosslinking complexes used consist of 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide ligands that coordinate to Fe( III ) centres through three different interactions: a strong pyridyl–iron one, and two weaker carboxamido–iron ones through both the nitrogen and oxygen atoms of the carboxamide groups. As a result, the iron–ligand bonds can readily break and re-form while the iron centres still remain attached to the ligands through the stronger interaction with the pyridyl ring, which enables reversible unfolding and refolding of the chains. We hypothesize that this behaviour supports the high stretchability and self-healing capability of the material.

Abstract:Abstract Ligaments are flexible and stiff tissues around joints to support body movements, showing superior toughness and fatigue-resistance. Such a combination of mechanical properties is rarely seen in synthetic elastomers because stretchability, stiffness, toughness, and fatigue resistance are seemingly incompatible in materials design. Here we resolve this long-standing mismatch through a hierarchical crosslinking design. The obtained elastomer can endure 30,000% stretch and exhibit a Young’s modulus of 18 MPa and toughness of 228 MJ m −3 , outperforming all the reported synthetic elastomers. Furthermore, the fatigue threshold is as high as 2,682 J m −2 , the same order of magnitude as the ligaments (~1,000 J m −2 ). We reveal that the dynamic double-crosslinking network composed of Li + -O interactions and PMMA nanoaggregates allows for a hierarchical energy dissipation, enabling the elastomers as artificial ligaments in soft robotics.

Abstract:With the combination of high flexibility and thermal property, thermally conductive elastomers have played an important role in daily life. However, traditional thermally conductive elastomers display limited stretchability and toughness, seriously restricting their further development in practical applications. Herein, a high-performance composite is fabricated by dispersing room-temperature liquid metal microdroplets (LM) into a polyborosiloxane elastomer (PBSE). Due to the unique solid-liquid coupling mechanism, the LM can deform with the PBSE matrix, achieving higher fracture strain (401%) and fracture toughness (2164 J/m2). Meanwhile, the existence of LM microdroplets improves the thermal conductivity of the composite. Interestingly, the LM/PBSE also exhibits remarkable anti-impact, adhesion capacities under complex loading environments. As a novel stretchable elastomer with enhanced mechanical and thermal behavior, the LM/PBSE shows good application prospects in the fields of thermal camouflages, stretchable heat-dissipation matrixes, and multifunctional shells for electronic devices.

Abstract:Current synthetic elastomers suffer from the well‐known trade‐off between toughness and stiffness. By a combination of multiscale experiments and atomistic simulations, a transparent unfilled elastomer with simultaneously enhanced toughness and stiffness is demonstrated. The designed elastomer comprises homogeneous networks with ultrastrong, reversible, and sacrificial octuple hydrogen bonding (HB), which evenly distribute the stress to each polymer chain during loading, thus enhancing stretchability and delaying fracture. Strong HBs and corresponding nanodomains enhance the stiffness by restricting the network mobility, and at the same time improve the toughness by dissipating energy during the transformation between different configurations. In addition, the stiffness mismatch between the hard HB domain and the soft poly(dimethylsiloxane)‐rich phase promotes crack deflection and branching, which can further dissipate energy and alleviate local stress. These cooperative mechanisms endow the elastomer with both high fracture toughness (17016 J m−2) and high Young's modulus (14.7 MPa), circumventing the trade‐off between toughness and stiffness. This work is expected to impact many fields of engineering requiring elastomers with unprecedented mechanical performance.

Abstract:High-performance elastomers have gained significant interest because of their wide applications in industry and our daily life. However, it remains a great challenge to fabricate elastomers simultaneously integrating ultra-high mechanical strength, toughness, and excellent healing and recycling capacities. In this study, ultra-strong, healable, and recyclable elastomers are fabricated by dynamically cross-linking copolymers composed of rigid polyimide (PI) segments and soft poly(urea-urethane) (PUU) segments with hydrogen bonds. The elastomers, which are denoted as PIPUU, have a record-high tensile strength of ≈142 MPa and an extremely high toughness of ≈527 MJ m-3 . The structure of the PIPUU elastomer contains hydrogen-bond-cross-linked elastic matrix and homogenously dispersed rigid nanostructures. The rigid PI segments self-assemble to generate phase-separated nanostructures that serve as nanofillers to significantly strengthen the elastomers. Meanwhile, the elastic matrix is composed of soft PUU segments cross-linked with reversible hydrogen bonds, which largely enhance the strength and toughness of the elastomer. The dynamically cross-linked PIPUU elastomers can be healed and recycled to restore their original mechanical strength. Moreover, because of the excellent mechanical performance and the hydrophobic PI segments, the PIPUU elastomers are scratch-, puncture-, and water-resistant.
An Extremely Stretchable and Self-Healable Supramolecular Polymer Network

Abstract:The construction of a single polymer network with extreme stretchability, relatively high mechanical strength, and fast and facile autonomous room-temperature self-healing capability still remains a challenge. Herein, supramolecular polymer networks are fabricated by synergistically incorporating metal-ligand and hydrogen bonds in poly(propylene glycol) (PPG). The representative specimen, PPG-Im-MDA-1.5-0.25-Cu, shows a combination of notable mechanical properties involving an extreme stretching ratio of 346 ± 14× and a Young's modulus of 2.10 ± 0.14 MPa, which are superior to the previously reported extremely stretchable polymeric materials. Notably, the destroyed specimen can fully recover mechanical performances within 1 h. The tunability of mechanical properties and self-healing capability has been actualized by merely tailoring the content of a chain extender. The application of the as-prepared supramolecular PPG network in constructing a flexible and self-healable conductor has been demonstrated. This strategy provides some insights for preparing extremely stretchable and self-healable polymeric materials.

Abstract:Abstract Current stretchable conductors, often composed of elastomeric composites infused with rigid conductive fillers, suffer from limited stretchability and durability, and declined conductivity with stretching. These limitations hinder their potential applications as essential components such as interconnects, sensors, and actuators in stretchable electronics and soft machines. In this context, an innovative elastomeric composite that incorporates a 3D network of liquid metal (LM), offering exceptional stretchability, durability, and conductivity, is introduced. The mechanics model elucidates how the interconnected 3DLM architecture imparts softness and stretchability to the composites, allowing them to withstand tensile strains of up to 500% without rupture. The relatively low surface‐to‐volume ratio of the 3DLM network limits the reforming of the oxide layer during cyclic stretch, thereby contributing to low permanent strain and enhanced durability. Additionally, the 3D architecture facilitates crack blunting and stress delocalization, elevating fracture resistance, while simultaneously establishing continuous conductive pathways that result in high conductivity. Notably, the conductivity of the 3DLM composite increases with strain during substantial stretching, highlighting its strain‐enhanced conductivity. In comparison to other LM‐based composites featuring 0D LM droplets, the 3DLM composite stands out with superior properties.

High-Performance Branched Polymer Elastomer Based on a Topological Network Structure and Dynamic Bonding

Abstract:High performance has always been the research focus of elastomers. However, there are inherent conflicts among properties of elastomers, such as strength and toughness, strength and damping performance, strength and self-healing ability, etc. Herein, first, we synthesized a unique structure of the dangling chain containing proton donors and receptors. Then, we design and fabricate a kind of high-performance elastomer with a gradient distribution of a dangling chain and a dynamic bond structure. The dangling chains of different lengths intertwine with each other and self-assemble to form a "dense accumulation" structure driven by hydrogen bonds, and the elastomer exhibits special micro/nano scale aggregated states and microphase separation. The "dense accumulation" structure plays a vital role in the increase of mechanical properties. Meanwhile, under the joint action of a dangling chain and a dynamic bond, the damping performance and self-healing performance of the elastomer are greatly enhanced. High strength (27.5 MPa), toughness (121.9 MJ·m-3), 94.8% healing efficiency and outstanding damping performance (tan δ ≥ 0.4, high damping temperature range up to 144 °C) are simultaneously achieved beyond the current state-of-the-art. This topoarchitected polymer with a gradient distribution of dangling chains successfully solves the defects of conventional branched polymers in deteriorating their mechanical properties. This material design provides a new strategy for the development of high-performance structural and functional integrated elastomers.
