Abstract:Using Schrodinger-Maxwell formalism, we propose and analyze a continuous-wave four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme for the generation of coherent light in a six-level atomic system based on electromagnetically dual induced transparency. We derive the corresponding explicit analytical expressions for the generated mixing field. We find that the scheme greatly enhances FWM production efficiency and is also capable of inhibiting and delaying the onset of the detrimental three-photon destructive interference by choosing the proper decay rate in the second electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) process.In addition, such an optical process also provides possibilities for producing short-wave-length coherent radiation at low pump intensities.

Abstract:We perform a time-dependent analysis of four-wave mixing (FWM) in molecular magnets via electromagnetically induced transparency and obtain the analytical expressions of pulsed electromagnetic waves, including the FWM-generated pulse, group velocities, phase shifts, and absorption coefficients. We have also investigated analytically the time-dependent electromagnetically induced transparency in molecular magnets.

Abstract:Highly efficient four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) processes can coexist in a four-level Y-type atomic system due to atomic coherence. The simultaneously opened dual electromagnetically induced transparency windows in this four-level atomic system allow observation of these two nonlinear optical processes at the same time, which enables detailed studies of the interplay between the FWM and SWM processes. Three-photon and five-photon destructive interferences are also observed.

Abstract:A nonlinear optical four-wave mixing scheme is presented and analysed for the generation of coherent light in a nearly four-level ladder-type atomic system in the context of electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We find that EIT can suppress nonlinear photon absorption and the peak of the generated mixing field is located at the centre of the transparency window where the loss is minimal, though there is a dip in the centre. Such a nonlinear optical process can also be used for generating coherent short-wavelength radiation.

Abstract:Four-wave-mixing has been considered in a Λ-type system to make clear the asymmetry occurred in EIT profile which had been realized experimentally in Phys. Rev. A 52 (1995) 2302. We present both analytical and numerical calculation to explain the reason. In the case of Doppler-free for the two-photon probe field, why EIT dip was not detected is also been demonstrated.

Abstract:We analyse a four-wave mixing (FWM) scheme in a five-level atomic system in which double-dark resonances are present. It is found that the enhancement of FWM in both electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) windows can be obtained even without the condition of multiphoton resonance. Moreover, the conversion efficiency of FWM in one EIT window can be much larger than that in the other due to the presence of interacting dark resonances.

Abstract:We demonstrate double electromagnetically induced transparency (double-EIT) and double four-wave mixing (double-FWM) based on a new scheme of non-degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) involving five levels of a cold Rb-85 atomic ensemble, in which the double-EIT windows are used to transmit the probe field and enhance the third-order nonlinear susceptibility. The phase-matching conditions for both four-wave mixings can be satisfied simultaneously. The frequency of one component of the generated bichromatic field is less than the other by ground-state hyperfine splitting (3 GHz). This specially designed experimental scheme for simultaneously generating different nonlinear wave-mixing processes is expected to find applications in quantum information processing and cross-phase modulation. Our results agree well with the theoretical simulation.

Abstract:We investigate the power control behavior of odd-order multiwave mixing in an electromagnetically induced transparency window. We successfully obtain the evolution from pure enhancement (bright state), half-enhancement, and half-suppression, to pure suppression (dark state) in a four-wave mixing (FWM) channel. The correlations of two bright and two dark states of FWM are studied under four different kinds of power configurations. Moreover, the power-controlled quantum interference among multiple dark states is also studied in FWM and six-wave mixing channels. Such selective switching among multiple frequency channels could have potential applications in optical switching, optical communication, and quantum information processing.

Abstract:With electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-assisted configuration, we study the third-order nonlinear four-wave mixing (FWM) process in a diamond-type four-level atomic system both theoretically and experimentally. Following the proposal by the recent study (Willis et al., 2009), we introduce EIT contribution to the theoretical model which will enhance the conversion efficiency of the nonlinear process and narrow the linewidth of the FWM signal. By means of the coherent EIT effect, we get higher conversion efficiency at lower power level of incident beam in such atomic system. Compare to our previous models, the conversion efficiency in such diamond-type atomic system is much smaller which needs higher threshold temperature. In addition, the frequency dependences on incident beams reveal that the dipole transition of one-photon and two-photon processes affect this nonlinear process. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:We present a theoretical study of high-efficiency four-wave mixing (FWM) sum-frequency generation beyond a pure electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) technique in a five-level atomic system. In our FWM scheme, with the assistance of two Λ-type subsystems utilized to create EIT and Autler-Townes splitting (ATS), a synergetic mechanism of EIT and ATS, or a dual-ATS mechanism is induced. These novel mechanisms can have a significant impact on the FWM process in the optically thick medium, and the FWM efficiency can be several orders of magnitude larger than that obtained from the pure EIT method. This Letter opens up a new perspective for exploring enhanced quantum nonlinear optical phenomena.

Abstract:Using density matrix equation, we calculate analytically as well as numerically the effect of the four-wave mixing (FWM) field on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in the rubidium 5S(1/2)-5P(3/2)-5D(5/2) Lambda-type system with a two-photon probe field. The calculated results are in good agreement with Fulton's experimental results in 1995.

Abstract:We theoretically investigate the dually dressed electromagnetically induced transparency, and the multidressed four-wave mixing (FWM) and six-wave mixing (SWM) processes in an inverted-Y-type atomic system with Zeeman sublevels. The results show that the Zeeman degeneracy of the dark states can be lifted by the dressing field as its intensity is increased. Moreover, the derived analytical expressions indicate that one can, for example, selectively create secondary dark states on the multi-Zeeman-sublevel dark states (by tuning the coupling field), distinguish two different types of dark states generated in two FWM processes (by properly controlling the coupling field intensity), and selectively enhance multi-FWM signals coming from various paths consisting of split Zeeman sublevels (by tuning the dressing field). The SWM signals can be either enhanced or suppressed by controlling the dressing field.

Abstract:The dressed four- and six-wave mixings in a V-type four-level system are considered. Under two different dressed conditions, two- and three-photon resonant Autler-Townes splittings, accompanied by enhancement and suppression of wave mixing signal, are obtained analytically. Meanwhile, an electromagnetic induced transparency of multi-wave mixing is presented, which shows multiple peaks and asymmetric effects caused by one-photon, two-photon and three-photon resonances, separately. The slow light propagation multiple region of multi-wave mixing signal is also obtained.

Abstract:We successfully observed the nonlinear eight-wave mixing (EWM) signal via one electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) window and double optical pumping channels in an open five-level atomic system of Rb-87. By carefully controlling the arrangement of the incident laser beams, the corresponding four-wave mixing (FWM), six-wave mixing (SWM) and EWM signals can be made to coexist with similar signal amplitudes and transmit through the same EIT window in such open five-level atomic system. Abstract:Two doubly dressing (parallel and nested processes) schemes are considered which generate co-existing four-wave mixing (FWM), six-wave mixing (SWM) and eight-wave mixing (EWM) processes in an open five-level atomic system. The coherent interaction between two dressing processes in nested type is much stronger than that in parallel type. The singly enhanced SWM and dually enhanced FWM channels can be opened at the same time. Such dramatic enhancements in high-order nonlinear optical processes result from the constructive interactions of double dark resonances. The giant third-, fifth- and seventh-order nonlinear responses with different signs can be obtained by using the coherent phase controls of the polarization beats between the FWM, SWM and EWM signals.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose and analyze an optical multi-wave mixing scheme for the generation of coherent light in a five-level atomic system in, the context of electromagnetically induced transparency. A detailed semiclassical study of the propagation of generated mixing and probe fields is demonstrated. The analytical dependence of the generated mixing field on the probe field and the respective detuning is predicted. Such a nonlinear optical process can be used for generating short-wavelength radiation at low pump intensities.

Abstract:We analyze a four-wave-mixing (FWM) scheme in a five-level atomic system based on electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT). We show that EIT suppresses both two-photon and three-photon absorptions in the FWM scheme and enables the four-wave mixing to proceed through real, resonant intermediate states without absorption loss. The scheme results in a several orders of magnitude increase in the FWM efficiency in comparison with a recent scheme [Phys. Rev. Lett. 88, 143902 (2002)] and may be used for generating short-wavelength radiation at low pump intensities.

We show that EIT suppression of the linear absorption leads to the resonantly enhanced four-wave mixing process and the conversion efficiency near 100% may be achieved in a dense four-level medium with negligible decoherence decay. Abstract:We report generation of four-wave mixing enhanced by electromagnetically induced transparency and optical pumping in a ladder-type atomic system. When two pumping laser beams are used to form a conjugate small-angle static grating, both four-wave and six-wave mixing processes are shown to exist at the same time. Interference between these two nonlinear wave-mixing signals is experimentally demonstrated.

Abstract:Starting from a second-quantized Hamiltonian of many-particle systems, we derive a set of time evolution equations for four-wave mixing (4WM) processes of coherent matter waves, which is analogous to those in optical 4WM except that the spatial variable is being replaced by time. Several interesting problems in 4WM such as the phase-matching condition, the effects of relative phase difference, and the conversion efficiency are then discussed in detail.
