Abstract:Software defined networking (SDN) provides flexible management for datacenter networks with the flow-level control. Such the fine-grained management, however, consumes large amount of bandwidth between data and control planes, which results in the bottleneck in the scalability of SDN-based datacenters. "The elephant and mouse phenomenon" suggests that there are only very few elephant flows that carry the majority of bytes in datacenters so that it can improve management efficiency to detect and reroute elephant flows while leaving mice flows in data plane leveraging wildcard flow table in OpenFlow. Unfortunately, existing mechanisms for elephant flow detection suffer from high bandwidth consumption and long detection time. In this paper, we propose an efficient sampling and classification approach (ESCA) with the two-phase elephant flow detection. In the first phase, ESCA improves sampling efficiency by estimating the arrival interval of elephant flows and filtering out redundant samples using a filtering flow table. In the second phase, ESCA classifies samples with a new supervised classification algorithm based on correlation among data flows. The mathematical analysis proofs our ESCA outperforms related schemes. Extensive experiment results on real public datacenter traces further demonstrate that our ESCA can provide accurate detection with less sampled packets and shorter detection time.

Abstract:To alleviate the performance interruption between elephant and mouse flows, a combined optical timeslot switching (OTS) and L2/L3 Top of Rack (ToR) architecture is experimentally demonstrated for the first time in a data center scenario. In this system, elephant flows are identified on the fly by a newly built sFlow-based traffic analyzer and delivered through a separate OTS subsystem. In this way, elephant flows are physically isolated from mouse flows; thus, fewer mutual interruptions are expected. However, previous OTS research has not sufficiently addressed how the timeslot allocator and timeslot allocation should be implemented to adapt to traffic fluctuations, and it is obvious that the current SDN-based timeslot allocation cannot satisfy the OTS system's requirements for time efficiency. Therefore, in this paper, data-plane development kit platform was used to enable an ultrafast online timeslot allocator (TSA) that can process timeslot requests at traffic levels exceeding 1 Tb/s. This demonstration employs two Intel Xeon CPU e5 logical cores for TSA, a private protocol between the TSA and servers, and a novel timeslot allocation algorithm. Using the proposed architecture, mouse flows are seldom interrupted by elephant flows. The power penalty of the OTS system is less than 1.2 dB, which is acceptable for server-to-server interconnections. Furthermore, simulation results show that the system achieves a consistently lower end-to-end latency for all flows than does a traditional ToR-based intrarack data center network (DCN).

Abstract:Data center networks leverage multiple parallel paths connecting end host pairs to offer high bisection bandwidth forcluster computing applications.However,state of the art flow scheduling algorithms may cause unfair link utili-zation and saturation of core switches,resulting in overall bandwidth loss.In the paper,we regard the flow scheduling prob-lem as a 0-K knapsack problem and propose a new flow scheduling algorithm named DPSOFS based on DPSO.DPSOFS formulates the position,velocity and their operation rules of particles according to Fat-Tree topology structure,and defines objective function as the difference of the number of conflict flows between two iterations.Moreover,our proposed mecha-nism reduces random search blindness by limiting the range of the path search.The simulation suggests that it can improve o-verall network bisection efficiently.

Abstract:With the development of cloud computing in recent years, data center networks have become a hot topic in both industrial and academic communities. Previous studies have shown that elephant flows, which usually carry large amount of data, are critical to the efficiency of data centers. In this paper, we study the flow scheduling problem in data centers with a focus on elephant flows. By applying stable matching theory, the scheduling problem is modeled and some useful method is complemented. Then, we propose Fincher, an efficient scheme leveraging Software-Defined Networking (SDN) to reduce latency and avoid congestions in data centers.
Isolating Mice and Elephant in Data Centers

Abstract:Data centers traffic is composed by numerous latency-sensitive "mice" flows, which is consisted of only several packets, and a few throughput-sensitive "elephant" flows, which occupy more than 80% of overall load. Generally, the short-lived "mice" flows induce transient congestion and the long-lived "elephant" flows cause persistent congestion. The network congestion is a major performance inhibitor. Conventionally, the hop-by-hop and end-to-end flow control mechanisms are employed to relief transient and persistent congestion, respectively. However, in face of the mixture of elephants and mice, we find the hybrid congestion control scheme including hop-by-hop and end-to-end flow control mechanisms suffers from serious performance impairments. As a step further, our in-depth analysis reveals that the hybrid scheme performs poor at latency of mice and throughput of elephant. Motivated by this understanding, we argue for isolating mice and elephants in different queues, such that the hop-by-hop and end-to-end flow control mechanisms are independently imposed to short-lived and long-lived flows, respectively. Our solution is readily-deployable and compatible with current commodity network devices and can leverage various congestion control mechanisms. Extensive simulations show that our proposal of isolation can simultaneously improve the latency of mice by at least 30% and the link utilization to almost 100%.

Abstract:In order to solve the data center link congestion problem,based on the characteristics of the flow distribution and flow types,a flow identification and scheduling scheme based on optical interconnect structure,named HCFD (host-controller flow detection),was proposed to identify the elephant flow which has a large impact on the network performance,and use the SDN controller to make forward strategy,and schedule the network traffic reasonably.The implementation of the scheme was to use the Netfilter framework in Linux kernel protocol on the host side to mark the flow that exceeds the threshold amount.Then,the classification model was used in the controller side to classify the marked flow.Finally,the appropriate forwarding strategy was developed based on the above results.With the advantage of the photoelectric network,mechanisms of flow depth fusion and switching could be realized.The scheme which integrates the advantage of the existing research results,was expected to identify elephant flow more accurately and comprehensively.It can effectively alleviate the network congestion,make full use of network bandwidth,reduce end-to-end delay and packet loss rate.

Abstract:Hybrid intra-data centre networks, with optical and electrical capabilities, are attracting research interest in recent years. This is attributed to the emergence of new bandwidth greedy applications and novel computing paradigms. A key decision to make in networks of this type is the selection and placement of suitable flows for switching in circuit network. Here, we propose an efficient strategy for flow selection and placement suitable for hybrid Intra-cloud data centre networks. We further present techniques for investigating bottlenecks in a packet networks and for the selection of flows to switch in circuit network. The bottleneck technique is verified on a Software Defined Network (SDN) testbed. We also implemented the techniques presented here in a scalable simulation experiment to investigate the impact of flow selection on network performance. Results obtained from scalable simulation experiment indicate a considerable improvement on average throughput, lower configuration delay, and stability of offloaded flows

Abstract:Nowdays Datacenter networks (DCNs) scale is rapidly increasing because of the widely deployment of cloud services. Thus, a large amount of data needs to be frequently interchanged among thousands of servers. In this environment, a key and challenging issue is to keep the traffic loadbalanced. In this letter, we propose a port forwarding load-balanced scheduling (PFLBS) approach for Fat-tree based DCNs. Firstly, we define a port-based source-routing addressing scheme, which simplifies the switch's functionality and makes the routing lookup operation unnecessary. Secondly, we apply the addressing scheme to the end hosts and formulate the PFLBS problem. PFLBS propose an efficient algorithm for multipath selection to obtain optimal paths and designs a trigger mechanism to split large flow implement scheduling data flows dynamically. The experiment results indicate that our PFLBS approach has better performance compared with the methods ECMP and Hedera and decreases the flow completion time and improve the average throughput significantly.

Abstract:The various flows in production datacenters usually can be classified into two types: bandwidth-hungry and delay-sensitive. To improve their performance, datacenter networks require effective load balancing and flow control protocols, respectively. However, as the two techniques are typically employed separately in current datacenters, they are unable to optimize the network in a coordinated way. In this work, we argue that the adaptive routing, in load balancing sense, and the flow control, in congestion control sense, could be tightly coupled at the transport layer to handle the complex datacenter traffic. We design OmniFlow, a novel transfer protocol which aims to achieve a proper balance between throughput and latency in a datacenter. Firstly, it can simultaneously and precisely measure the queueing latencies on multiple paths between two hosts, which enables it to have more visibility of the path congestion and have better control of the transmission states. Secondly, OmniFlow adaptively integrates the load balancing and flow control modules and shares the same congestion metrics (i.e. queueing latencies) between them. Based on different network conditions, it either dynamically reroutes flows to utilize the bisection bandwidth or proactively adjusts flow rates to bound queueing occupancies. The results of extensive experiments show that OmniFlow can provide both low average and tail latency for small flows without sacrificing the throughput of elephant flows.
Efficient Coflow Scheduling in Hybrid-Switched Data Center Networks

Abstract:To improve the application-level communication performance, scheduling of coflows, a collection of parallel flows sharing the same objective, is prevalent in modern data center networks (DCNs). Meanwhile, a hybrid-switched DCN design combining optical circuit switches (OPS) and electrical packet switches (EPS) for transmitting high-volume traffic and low-volume traffic separately has received considerable research attention recently. Efficient scheduling of coflows on hybrid network links is crucial for reducing the overall communication time. However, because of the reconfiguration delay in the circuit switch due to the ultra-high transmission rate and the limitation of bandwidth in the packet switch, coflow scheduling becomes increasingly challenging. The existing coflow scheduling algorithms in hybrid-switched DCNs are all heuristic and provide no performance guarantees. In this work, we propose an approximation algorithm with the worst-case performance guarantee of 2+ \lambda?, where \lambda? is a factor related to system parameters and demand characteristics, for single coflow scheduling in hybridswitched DCN to minimize the coflow completion time (CCT). Extensive simulations based on Facebook data traces show that our algorithm outperforms the state-of-the-art schemes Solstice by 1.14? and Reco-Sin by 1.42? in terms of minimizing CCT.

Hybrid Flow Table Installation: Optimizing Remote Placements of Flow Tables on Servers to Enhance PDP Switches for In-Network Computing

Abstract:Recently, the programmable data plane (PDP) switches have been considered as the key enablers for in-network computing. However, the limited memory resources in them for flow tables might restrict their performance. This work addresses this challenge by studying how to optimize the placements of flow tables in the external memory on multiple servers, and to access them with remote direct memory access (RDMA) for ensuring low latency. Specifically, we consider a data-center network (DCN) that uses PDP switches as top-of-rack (ToR) switches, and propose and optimize the hybrid flow table installation (hFT-INST) on each ToR switch. With hFT-INST, the switch can either store flow tables in its local memory or use RDMA to install and access them remotely in its rack servers. We first design the protocol and operation procedure of hFT-INST. Then, regarding the key problem of hFT-INST, i.e., how to place the flow tables on the external memory on different servers, we take a few practical parameters into account, and formulate a mixed integer linear programming (MILP) model to tackle it. Next, the optimization in the MILP is transformed into a capacitated facility location problem (CFLP) with additional constraints. We further transform it into a ${k}$ -median problem through pre-processing, and design a polynomial-time approximation algorithm to solve the problem. Extensive simulations confirm the performance of our proposed algorithm. We also prototype our design of the hFT-INST, and conduct experiments to demonstrate its feasibility.
OmniFlow: Coupling Load Balancing with Flow Control in Datacenter Networks

Freeway: Adaptively Isolating the Elephant and Mice Flows on Different Transmission Paths

Abstract:The network resource competition of today' data enters is extremely intense between long-lived elephant flows and latency-sensitive mice flows. Achieving both goals of high throughput and low latency respectively for the two types of flows requires compromise, which recent research has not successfully solved mainly due to the transfer of elephant and mice flows on shared links without any differentiation. However, current data enters usually adopt clos-based topology, e.g. Fat-tree/VL2, so there exist multiple shortest paths between any pair of source and destination. In this paper, we leverage on this observation to propose a flow scheduling scheme, Freeway, to adaptively partition the transmission paths into low latency paths and high throughput paths respectively for the two types of flows. An algorithm is proposed to dynamically adjust the number of the two types of paths according to the real-time traffic. And based on these separated transmission paths, we propose different flow type-specific scheduling and forwarding methods to make full utilization of the bandwidth. Our simulation results show that Freeway significantly reduces the delay of mice flow by 85.8% and achieves 9.2% higher throughput compared with Hedera.

Abstract:Abstract Modern data center networks typically adopt multi-rooted tree topologies such leaf-spine and fat-tree to provide high bisection bandwidth. Load balancing is critical to achieve low latency and high throughput. Although the per-packet schemes such as Random Packet Spraying (RPS) can achieve high network utilization and near-optimal tail latency in symmetric topologies, they are prone to cause significant packet reordering and degrade the network performance. Moreover, some coding-based schemes are proposed to alleviate the problem of packet reordering and loss. Unfortunately, these schemes ignore the traffic characteristics of data center network and cannot achieve good network performance. In this paper, we propose a Heterogeneous Traffic-aware Partition Coding named HTPC to eliminate the impact of packet reordering and improve the performance of short and long flows. HTPC smoothly adjusts the number of redundant packets based on the multi-path congestion information and the traffic characteristics so that the tailing probability of short flows and the timeout probability of long flows can be reduced. Through a series of large-scale NS2 simulations, we demonstrate that HTPC reduces average flow completion time by up to 60% compared with the state-of-the-art mechanisms.

Abstract:The mixed flow in multi-tenant data centers presents a challenge for priority flow scheduling due to the coexistence of various requirements such as latency and throughput. To address this issue, we propose Key Flow First (KFF), a balanced scheduling algorithm suitable for mixed flows in multi-tenant data centers. Firstly, KFF categorizes flows into Latency-Sensitive Flows (LS Flow) and Throughput-Demanding Flows (TD Flow) based on the Quality of Service (QoS) of their application sources. Secondly, it further differentiates flows into Mice Flows and Elephants Flows based on the amount of already sent bytes. Thirdly, KFF employs the Multi-Level Feedback Queue (MLFQ) threshold update algorithm and a priority-based strict forwarding mechanism. By avoiding reliance on complex flow priors, KFF consistently maintains reasonable scheduling of mixed flows under different load scenarios. Experimental results demonstrate that KFF effectively reduces the real-time load on the network and achieves good performance in terms of MAX (Shortest Job First (SJF), Earliest Deadline First (EDF)) performance under diverse load conditions. Compared to PIAS, KFF reduces the FCT slow down of deadline flows by nearly 60% under high TD loads; compared to Karuma and Time Deadline Aware pFabric (TDA-pFabric), KFF reduces the flow completion time (FCT) slow down of non-deadline Mice flows by over 90% under high LS loads and meanwhile guaranteeing nearly 0 deadline miss rate.

Abstract:Hybrid optical-electrical switching based data center network (HOE-DCN) has been regarded as a promising architecture for the next generation data center network (DCN). To achieve traffic optimization, the main superiority of HOE-DCN is its capability to offload the long-lived 'elephant' flows by optical interconnections, and transmit the latency-sensitive 'mice' flows by electrical switching. However, most previous works identify and schedule the flows according to a fixed flow size threshold, which can hardly handle the highly dynamic network conditions in recent DCN. In order to achieve more effective flow scheduling in HOE-DCN, in this paper, we propose Flow Splitter (FS), a deep reinforcement learning (DRL) based flow scheduler which enables HOE-DCN to make instant flow scheduling according to the runtime network conditions. To train a more effective DRL agent, we upgrade the DRL method named Deep Deterministic Policy Gradient (DDPG) and propose DDPG-FS, which is capable of learning a high-performance flow scheduling policy in the complex network environment. Through simulation, we prove that our FS can significantly improve the performance of HOE-DCN. Compared with the recent flow scheduling approaches for HOE-DCN, our FS can obviously reduce the average flow complete time of arrival flows, especially the latency-sensitive mice flows.

Abstract:It is highly valuable to achieve energy-efficient cloud data centres, which always act as the basic infrastructures. This paper thus aims at reducing the energy consumption of network devices in cloud data centres by flexible flow scheduling. For such an aim, it is necessary to guarantee the flow-level performance, which is a critical requirement for quality of service (QoS) in production data centres. Hence, this paper takes both energy reduction and QoS into account for flow scheduling, and then proposes a three-phase framework to control the energy consumption for cloud data centre network (DCN) while guaranteeing flow-level performance. The core idea is to turn off the unnecessary switches off. From extensive simulations, it is shown that our solution could not only reduce about 20% of energy on average than the case with all switches on, but also maintain good flow-level performance, stability and fault tolerance simultaneously.
Don't be fat: Towards efficient online flow scheduling in data center networks

Abstract:Flow scheduling is one of the primary issues in data centers. The efficiency of flow scheduling affects the user experience significantly, since the service latency is determined by the flow completion time (FCT). Current transport protocols are based on the Processor Sharing (PS) policy by dividing the link bandwidth equally. As short flows may be blocked by long flows under PS policy, these protocols could not meet latency requirements. The Shortest Remaining Processing Time (SRPT) policy provides a near-optimal solution in term of reducing average FCT. However, this flow scheduling policy may cause long flows suffering unfair delays. In this paper, we propose MERP (Minimizing Expansion Ratio Protocol) for flow scheduling, which aims to navigate the tradeoff between fairness and the average FCT. We propose expansion ratio as a new metric to describe the gap between reality and ideal in terms of acquired link resources by a flow. Larger expansion ratio indicates that the flow obtains fewer bottleneck link resources. We strive to make the flow scheduling relatively fair by reducing the largest expansion ratio of all the flows. And we further demonstrate that reducing expansion ratio is more reasonable than reducing average FCT for services with the Partition/Aggregate pattern. And to meet the scalability requirements, we implement distributed MERP through flow preemption and explicit rate control. The experiments indicate that MERP could significantly reduce the completion time for 99.9th percentile flows under high load.
