Abstract:Photonic switches have attractive application prospects in optical communication data networks that require dynamic reconfiguration. Integrating optical switching devices with optical fiber, the most widely deployed photonic technology platform, can realize signal transmission and processing in practical applications. Here, we demonstrate the multilevel optical switching using the phase-change material Ge2Sb2Te5 (GST) integrated on a graded-index multimode fiber. This switching process works by exploiting the significant difference in extinction coefficient between the crystalline state and the amorphous state of the GST. Using GST to achieve the switch function, no external energy source is needed to maintain the existing state of the switch, and the device is nonvolatile. This multi-level optical switch is an all-fiber integrated device. We apply GST to the end facets of the graded-index multimode fiber by magnetron sputtering, which is a reflective structure. A pulsing scheme is used to control the optical propagation state of the optical modulation signal to realize the switching function. It can store up to 11 non-volatile reliable and repeatable levels encoded by the pump source laser with a wavelength of 1550 nm. At the same time, the switching process between states is on the order of hundreds of nanoseconds. The present experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of 11 multilevel states in the field of optical fibers commonly used in communications. It can be well coupled with the all-fiber terminal device. It also shows that the device is still applicable in the 1525 nm∼1610 nm broadband range, promising for designing future multilevel photonic switches and memory devices.
Transient Evolutional Dynamics of Quantum-Dot Molecular Phase Coherence for Sensitive Optical Switching

Abstract:Atomic phase coherence (quantum interference) in a multilevel atomic gas exhibits a number of interesting phenomena. Such an atomic quantum coherence effect can be generalized to a quantum-dot molecular dielectric. Two quantum dots form a quantum-dot molecule, which can be described by a three-level.-configuration model {vertical bar 0 >, vertical bar 1 >, vertical bar 2 >}, i.e., the ground state of the molecule is the lower level vertical bar 0 > and the highly degenerate electronic states in the two quantum dots are the two upper levels vertical bar 1 >, vertical bar 2 >. The electromagnetic characteristics due to the vertical bar 0 >-vertical bar 1 > transition can be controllably manipulated by a tunable gate voltage (control field) that drives the vertical bar 2 >-vertical bar 1 > transition. When the gate voltage is switched on, the quantum-dot molecular state can evolve from one steady state (i.e., vertical bar 0 >-vertical bar 1 > two-level dressed state) to another steady state (i.e., three-level coherent-population-trapping state). In this process, the electromagnetic characteristics of a quantum-dot molecular dielectric, which is modified by the gate voltage, will also evolve. In this study, the transient evolutional behavior of the susceptibility of a quantum-dot molecular thin film and its reflection spectrum are treated by using the density matrix formulation of the multilevel systems. The present field-tunable and frequency-sensitive electromagnetic characteristics of a quantum-dot molecular thin film, which are sensitive to the applied gate voltage, can be utilized to design optical switching devices.

Abstract:We report an all-optical switch based on two-pump four-wave mixing in fibers. The switched signal is not shifted in frequency in this scheme. For different signal wavelengths, the pump wavelengths and powers can be optimized to achieve the best performance. The principle of how to design the switch is discussed in detail. A high extinction ratio of -60 dB is obtained when the pump parameters are optimized by a genetic algorithm that exhibits good convergence property and high computing efficiency. The effect of zero-dispersion wavelength fluctuations along the fiber on the switch is analyzed.

Abstract:An EIT (electromagnetically induced transparency)-based prism coupler is suggested for realizing tunable re∞ection spectrum via quantum coherence of phases in a multilevel system, where destructive and constructive quantum interference will occur among multilevel transition pathways that are driven by two external control flelds. In this prism coupler, a semiconductor-quantum-dot (SQD) medium layer, which can exhibit EIT and relevant quantum coherent efiects, bounds the prism base, and the two external control flelds are used to manipulate the probe fleld and the excited surface plasmon wave (on the SQD layer surface). Then the surface plasmon wave modes, which are generated by the probe fleld incident into this multilevel SQD medium layer, can be coherently tunable through the switchable quantum interference (destructive and constructive quantum interference) among the energy levels in the SQD systems. Such switchable quantum interference can be realized if we tune the intensities (i.e., adjust a proper intensity ratio) of the two control flelds that drive the SQD multilevel EIT system. New switchable photonic devices, which could flnd applications in photonic microcircuits as well as some areas in integrated optical circuits, could be designed based on this quantum-interference switchable surface plasmon resonance.

Abstract:Optical phase shifters and switches play an important role for various optical applications including optical signal processing, sensing and communication. In this paper, we demonstrate a fiber all optical phase shifter using few-layer 2D material tungsten disulfide (WS2) deposited on a tapered fiber. WS2 absorbs injected 980 nm pump (control light) and generates heat which changes the refractive index of the tapered fiber due to thermo-optic effect and achieves a maximum phase shift of 6.1{\pi} near 1550 nm. The device has a loss of 3.7 dB. By constructing a Mach-Zehnder interferometer with WS2 based phase shifter in one arm, an all optical switch is also obtained with an extinction ratio of 15 dB and a rise time of 7.3 ms. This all fiber low-cost and compact optical phase shifter and switch demonstrates the potential of 2D transition metal dichalcogenides for all optical signal processing devices.

Abstract:Optically controlled phase shifters are desirable for optical communication, sensors, and signal processing due to their simple implementation and low cost. We propose an all-fiber phase shifter assisted by graphene's photothermal effect. In a graphene-coated microfiber, graphene's ohmic heating promises efficient fiber index change and phase shift via the thermo-optic effect. On a fabricated device with a length of 5 mm, we obtain a phase shift exceeding 21 pi with a nearly linear slope of 0.091 pi/mW (0.192 pi/mW) when pumped by 980 nm (1540 nm) light, which enables all-optical switching with an extinction ratio of 20 dB and a rise (fall) time of 9.1 ms (3.2 ms) following the 10%-90% rule. This graphene-assisted index change and phase shifter featured with all-in-fiber, low power requirement, and ease of fabrication may open the door for graphene's realistic applications in all-optical signal processing. Abstract:In this paper, a non-volatile polarization-insensitive 1×2 silicon optical switch utilizing phase-change materials is presented. The presented device is composed of three polarization beam combiners/splitters, two directional couplers with phase change materials, and a polarization-insensitive waveguide crossing. By adjusting the phase state of phase-change material, polarization-insensitive switching behavior is realized. As an example, the proposed switch using Ge2Sb2Te5 is comprehensively optimized and analyzed based on particle swarm optimization algorithm and finite difference time domain method. The designed device can have a crosstalk of less than −15.98 dB and an insertion loss of smaller than 0.95 dB over the C-band in the case of TE polarization, while a maximum crosstalk of −13.53 dB and a maximum insertion loss of 1.37 dB can be obtained within the C-band in the case of TM polarization.

Abstract:We theoretically propose a scheme of phase-controlled all-optical switching due to the effect of degenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) and coherent population oscillation (CPO) in a two-level system driven by a strong coupling field and two weak symmetrically detuned fields. The results show that the phase of the FWM field can be utilized to switch between constructive and destructive interference, which can lead to the transmission or attenuation of the probe field and thus switch the field on or off. We also find the intensity of the coupling field and the propagation distance have great influence on the performance of the switching. In our scheme, due to the quick response in semiconductor systems, a fast all-optical switching can be realized at low light level.

Abstract:Optical circuit switching is connection-oriented, being deterministic through the reservation of a complete wavelength channel or spatial path for a certain period. However, this comes at a trade-off against link dynamics, and overall capacity can thus be constrained by the time slot reservations, especially for switches with microsecond- to millisecond-scale reconfiguration times. For data-intensive applications, the communication patterns associated with random data sets typically yield short-lived flows. This situation calls for a new multi-dimensional switching paradigm that fully exploits not only the space and wavelength domains but also with nanosecond-scale reconfigurable capability in the time domain to enable ultra-dynamic links. In this work, we focus on the exploitation of micro-ring resonant phase shifters (RPSs) that are wavelength selective for optical switching in a single plane. By proposing an innovative analytical method with transmission circle chart, we fully unlock the power of RPS with nanosecond-scale reconfigurability and the capability to arbitrarily manipulate its phase and amplitude. Such a compact model offers fresh insights into designs with under and critically coupled RPSs beyond the commonly explored over-coupling condition. This creates not only versatile switch elements but also perfect absorbers for robust multi-wavelength operations. The proposed device can bring about a breakthrough in the optical switching capacity that potentially addresses the challenges faced by modern data center networks, as well as other photonic circuits for high-throughput signal processing.

Abstract:We have studied the possibility to utilize semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) as an optical phase shifter within a vertical geometry for ultrafast information processing. From theoretical analyses, an optical phase nonlinearity in QD structures has been predicted which can be enhanced through the use of an vertical optical cavity. Asymmetric cavity structures with 16/30 periods of GaAs/AlGaAs layers for the front/back mirrors have been fabricated to demonstrate a practical device with significant nonlinear characteristics for optical switching. A phase shift of 18° has been initially observed with a tilted pump scheme. This observation paves the way toward a Mach–Zehnder optical switch using QDs inside a vertical cavity.

Abstract:We report a low-power all-optical switching in a two-dimensional nanocomposite photonic crystal microcavity made of poly[2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene] doped with gold nanoparticles, realized based on surface plasmon resonance enhancing nonlinearity and dynamically tunable coupling of two asymmetric defect modes. Under excitation around the surface plasmon resonance peak, the value of the nonlinear susceptibility of the nanocomposite material reaches the order of 10−6 esu. A threshold photon energy as low as 700 fJ and an ultrahigh switching efficiency of 90% are realized simultaneously.

Abstract:A photochromic all-optical switch in telecommunication-grade fiber is fabricated by filling a fiber Bragg grating Fabry-Perot resonator with a spiro-oxazine solution. The narrow linewidth of the resonator allows for a high sensitivity of the resonance wavelengths to the index change. The switch is controlled by low intensity UV light exposure, and operation at infrared telecommunication wavelengths is demonstrated. The switching speed on the order of minutes has been achieved. Abstract:Two-color all-optical switching is demonstrated in azo dye doped nematic liquid crystals by means of the spatial cross-phase modulation (SXPM) method. A 633 nm light with the power below the diffraction excitation threshold diffracts into concentric rings under the irradiation of a 532 nm light. The ring number and size of the diffraction pattern of the 633 nm light increases with the power of the 532 nm light rising. Taking advantages of the unique physical and optical properties of the liquid crystals, the circular symmetry of the diffraction pattern of the 633 nm is well preserved. It indicates that the irregular and unpredictable distortion of the diffraction pattern caused by the light induced thermal convection could be eliminated, providing potential applications prospect in designing advanced optical devices for all-optical information conversion. In addition, it is found that the SXPM phenomenon between the two lights only happens when the two beams are merged together. Even a small intersection angle between the two lights could change the obtained pattern of the 633 nm light completely.

Abstract:We experimentally study the phase regulated switch between electromagnetically induced transparency and electromagnetically induced absorption in probe transmission signal and the conversion between enhancement and suppression in four-wave mixing and fluorescence signals for the first time. By changing the relative phase, electromagnetically induced transparency can be converted into electromagnetically induced absorption. In this process, the conversion from suppression to enhancement is also obtained in four-wave mixing and fluorescence signals. This research can be applied in non-linear optical device like optical switch and optical wavelength convertor.

Abstract:This paper demonstrates the realization of an optical switch by optically manipulating a large number of polystyrene spheres contained in a capillary. The strong scattering force exerted on polystyrene spheres with a large diameter of 4.3 mu m is employed to realize the switching operation. A transparent window is opened for the signal light when the polystyrene spheres originally located at the beam centre are driven out of the beam region by the strong scattering force induced by the control light. The switching dynamics under different incident powers is investigated and compared with that observed in the optical switch based on the formation of optical matter. It is found that a large extinction ratio of similar to 30 dB and fast switching-on and switching-off times can be achieved in this type of switch.
