Abstract:An optical amplification-free deep reservoir computing (RC)-assisted high-baudrate intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) system is experimentally demonstrated using a 100G externally modulated laser operated in C-band. We transmit 112 Gbaud 4-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) and 100 Gbaud 6-level PAM (PAM6) signals over a 200-m single-mode fiber (SMF) link without any optical amplification. The decision feedback equalizer (DFE), shallow RC, and deep RC are adopted in the IM/DD system to mitigate impairment and improve transmission performance. Both PAM transmissions over a 200-m SMF with bit error rate (BER) performance below 6.25% overhead hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold are achieved. In addition, the BER of the PAM4 signal is below the KP4-FEC limit after 200-m SMF transmission enabled by the RC schemes. Thanks to the use of a multiple-layer structure, the number of weights in deep RC has been reduced by approximately 50% compared with the shallow RC, whereas the performance is comparable. We believe that the optical amplification-free deep RC-assisted high-baudrate link has a promising application in intra-data center communications.

Abstract:Metro network, as a medium distance transmission system, poses a special challenge of transmission capacity and cost. In this paper, we present a detailed comparison of applying three advanced modulation formats including pulse amplitude modulation-4 (PAM-4), carrierless amplitude and phase modulation-16 QAM (CAP-16), and discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-S OFDM) with low-cost direct detection for 100-Gb/s/ metro optical transmission systems. These modulation formats are all experimentally demonstrated with similar digital signal processing algorithms. Three kinds of chromatic dispersion (CD) compensation ways named CD precompensation method, single sideband (SSB), and dispersion compensating fiber (DCF) are also compared. Two types of modulators including an IQ modulator and a dual-drive Mach-Zehnder modulator are employed to generate SSB or CD precompensated signals in this experiment and their transmission performance is also evaluated. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the performance of single-wavelength 100-G signal transmission based on direct detection is evaluated over 480 km of standard single mode fiber with PAM-4, CAP-16, and DFT-S OFDM modulation formats.

Abstract:In this article, we review the latest progress on data center interconnect (DCI). We then discuss different perspectives on the 400G pluggable module, including form factor, architecture, digital signal processing (DSP), and module power consumption, following 400G pluggable optics in DCI applications. Next, we experimentally investigate the capacity-reach matrix for high-baud-rate and high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) single-carrier signals in the unamplified single-mode optical fiber (SMF) link. We show that the 64 GBd 16-QAM, and 64-QAM signals can potentially enable 400 Gb/s and 600 Gb/s DCI application for 40 km and beyond of unamplified fiber link.

Abstract:As the capacity of the next-generation passive optical network (PON) is reaching 100 Gb/s and beyond, cost-effective transceivers have been widely discussed. In this work, we provide a comprehensive comparison of various simplified coherent and direct detection (DD) schemes operating at a 100 G b / s / λ 4-ary pulse amplitude modulation signal through numerical simulation. According to the cost, the coherent receivers can be divided into three levels: intensity-only coherent receivers and phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive complex-value coherent receivers. The received power sensitivity at back-to-back, influence of laser frequency offset, local oscillator power, laser linewidth, analog-to-digital convertor resolution, fiber dispersion, and hardware complexity are investigated and analyzed for each transceiver structure. The results show the following: (1) Transmitter-side optical amplification is suggested for DD and intensity-only coherent receivers to meet the 29 dB power budget requirement, and these schemes have a large dispersion penalty. (2) Compared with 3 × 3 coupler and 2 × 4 hybrid-based coherent receivers, 2 × 2 coupler and balanced-photodiode-based heterodyne detection exhibit similar performance with a simpler structure. (3) Both phase-insensitive and phase-sensitive complex-value coherent receivers have superior power budget and dispersion tolerance, and their application in PON would depend on the cost.

Abstract:Direct detection (DD) systems based on high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is promising to provide high spectrum efficiency (SE) for future short-reach data-center applications with next generation standardization of 800GbE or even 1.6TbE considering bandwidth limitation. Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver is recently proposed as an effective method to inherently remove signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) by reconstructing complex optical field in single-sideband (SSB) DD systems. In this paper, we make a detailed system performance assessment of applying a KK receiver in 128, 256 and 512QAM systems through simulations and experimental demonstrations. 25GHz-spaced 4 140 Gbs wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) 128QAM and 4 160 Gbs WDM 256QAM SSB KK transmissions over 20km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) are successfully achieved. As far as we know, this is the first time that a constellation size as high as 256QAM with a net SE of 5.12 bsHz is experimentally demonstrated in a WDM system with KK receiver, and the effect of adjusting carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR) on the performance of 128, 256 and 512QAM systems is also investigated with simulation and experimental results.

Abstract:In this paper, for the first time, the transmission performances of long-haul 100-Gb/s direct detection optical OFDM (DDO-OFDM) and coherent optical OFDM (CO-OFDM) wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) systems are compared by simulation. It provides specific guides for system parameter selection to get a high-performance and cost-effective OFDM WDM system. Specifically, the comparison involves three aspects: launched power is investigated to achieve better system performance; laser linewidth is numerically investigated to choose cost-effective laser; system dispersion tolerances with different laser linewidths are analyzed to further reveal the advantages and disadvantages of these two detecting methods, direct detection and coherent detection, in long-haul OFDM WDM system.

Abstract:For short reach and metro applications, single sideband (SSB) is a promising scheme due to its high spectral efficiency and tolerance to chromatic dispersion. In this study, we propose a novel asymmetric twin-SSB scheme based on Nyquist pulse shaping. Without joint equalization, the two sidebands can be separately detected with a small guard band. We experimentally demonstrate 224-Gb/s 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (16-QAM) asymmetric twin-SSB transmission with direct detection. After 240-km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) transmission, the bit error rates (BERs) of the right-sideband (RSB) and the left-sideband (LSB) are 3.2 x 10(-3) and 2.8 x 10(-3), respectively, which are below the 7% hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) threshold of 3.8 x 10(-3). The net bitrate is 203.7 Gb/s with consideration of both frame redundancy and HD-FEC overhead. To our best knowledge, we report the longest transmission distance for 200G single wavelength and single polarization direct detection systems. The advantages of the asymmetric twin-SSB scheme over the symmetric scheme are discussed through simulating the crosstalk resistance of both two schemes. We also demonstrate 300-Gb/s 32-QAM transmission over 80-km SSMF. The BERs of RSB and LSB are 1.50 x 10(-2) and 1.61 x 10(-2), respectively, which are below the 15% soft-decision forward error correction (SD-FEC) threshold of 1.8 x 10(-2). The net bitrate is 254.3 Gb/s with consideration of both frame redundancy and SD-FEC overhead. To our best knowledge, it is the maximum bitrate ever reported for C-band 80-km single wavelength and single polarization direct detection transmission. The proposed scheme provides a useful and low-cost solution for high speed datacenter interconnection and metro-scale transmission.

Abstract:Single-polarization, single-photodiode-based direct-detection (DD) transceivers offer advantages for metro networks due to their simple and low-cost optical hardware structure. Single-sideband Nyquist-pulse-shaped subcarrier modulation (SSB Nyquist-SCM) is a promising signal format to achieve high information spectral density (ISD) in such DD systems. In this paper, we present theoretical and experimental evaluations of a variety of direct-detection SSB Nyquist-SCM system designs, operating at 100 Gb/s per wavelength in wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) metro network scenarios. Through simulations, several receiver-based digital linearization techniques to overcome the effect of signal-signal beat interference were investigated, and their performance compared with alternative approaches, including optical beat-interference cancellation receivers (BICRx) and coherent receivers (both heterodyne and homodyne). Subsequently, experimental assessments of the digitally-linearized DD receivers were carried out. Spectrally efficient (net ISD exceeding 3 b/s/Hz) 4 × 112 Gb/s WDM DD single-sideband 16-QAM Nyquist-SCM transmission over distances of up to 240 km (multi-span links) and 160 km (single-span links without mid-span amplification) were shown to be possible using uncompensated standard single-mode fiber.
Demonstration of a 50G-PON with a 45-Db Power Budget Using an IQ-interleaved Coherent Detection Scheme

Abstract:The application of traditional coherent detection technology to optical access networks has been undermined due to its high complexity and high cost. In this paper, we propose a novel IQ-interleaved detection method which uses the preset frequency offset of the lasers at the transmitter and receiver to obtain the in-phase and quadrature components of the received signal. It keeps the simple structure of heterodyne detection and avoids the down-conversion process. Without Nyquist pulse shaping, the received signal bandwidth of the proposed scheme is theoretically 0.5B smaller than that of heterodyne detection for signal with a symbol rate of B. The 50-Gb/s NRZ transmission experiment proves that by using the proposed scheme, the receiving sensitivity and the frequency drift tolerance can be improved by ∼1 dB and 1 GHz compared with heterodyne detection under strong bandwidth limitation. Without pulse shaping, the receiving sensitivity, frequency drift tolerance (1-dB sensitivity penalty) and link power budget for 20-km fiber transmission are -31.8 dBm, 11 GHz and 43.5 dB, respectively. A higher power budget of 45 dB can be achieved when Nyquist pulse shaping is applied. The proposed scheme provides a low-complexity potential solution for a next-generation coherent PON.

Abstract:Polarization-division-multiplexed (PDM) four-level pulse amplitude modulation (PAM4) with coherent detection is a promising low cost solution for 80 km inter-datacenter transmissions at 100 Gb/s and beyond. In this paper, three modified adaptive equalization algorithms for the PDM-PAM4 optical coherent systems, i.e. signal-phase aid least-mean-square (SP-LMS) algorithm, training multi-modulus algorithm (TMMA) and cascaded four-modulus algorithm (CMMA-4), are proposed and compared. Based on the proposed algorithms, 112 Gb/s PDM-PAM4 transmission over 80 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) in C-band for a bit error rate (BER) below 3.8e-3 is successfully demonstrated without optical amplifier, chromatic dispersion (CD) pre-compensation and extra carrier recovery operations.

Abstract:In this paper, we experimentally demonstrated a four-channel wavelength-division-multiplex (WDM) 560 Gbit/s 128 quadrature amplitude modulation (128QAM)-Discrete MultiTone (DMT) signal transmission in a short reach interconnect. Coordinated discrete Fourier transform-spread and preequalization are jointly used to simultaneously overcome serious frequency domain power attenuation and reduce the peak-to-average power ratio of the DMT signal. An additional postdecision-directed least mean square equalizer is used afterward to further compensate the channel response and mitigate the devices’ implementation penalty. These proposed algorithms and equalizer are validated through experiment in this paper, we achieved the highest capacity signal transmission in the four-channel WDM transmission system using intensitymodulation and directdetection over a 2.4-km single mode fiber with a bit-error-ratio under the hard-decision forward error correction limit of 3.8 × 10 -3 .

Abstract:We demonstrate 224 Gb/s single polarization direct detection transmission over 160 km standard single mode fiber with Nyquist 16-ary quadrature amplitude modulation halfcycle single-sideband (SSB) signal at C-band. The net bit rate is 203.4 Gb/s considering frame redundancy and hard-decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) with 7% overhead. After 160 km transmission, the bit error rate (BER) is 3.6 x 10(-3), which is less than the BER threshold of 4.5 x 10(-3) for 7% HD-FEC. To our best knowledge, it is the first report of C-band 200G single channel and single photodiode direct detection transmission, which sets a record of fiber link length for such systems. In our experiment, the optical carrier is added with an additional laser at the transmitter side, which is delivered along with the signal. For short reach transmission, the nonlinear interactions between the carrier and the signal are usually insignificant. Therefore, our scheme is equivalent to heterodyne coherent detection with a local oscillator and a single-ended photodiode. The system performance is studied by deducing the relationship between electrical signal-to-noise ratio and optical signal-to-noise ratio of an SSB signal. The spectrum efficiency and hardware complexity of our experiment are compared with other direct detection schemes. The signal-signal beat interference induced by the square-law detection of a single-ended photodiode is compensated by an iterative technique at the receiver side. The equalization-enhanced in-band noise in bandwidth-limited systems is compensated using a digital post filter together with maximum likelihood sequence decision. The demonstrated scheme can provide a promising technique for beyond 100G high-speed direct detection transmission aiming to datacenter interconnecting and some metropolitan area applications.

Abstract:We experimentally propose and demonstrate homodyne coherent detection in a short-distance data center interconnect with bidirectional fiber transmission. The transmitter in the proposed system sends the modulated signal and a continuous wave (CW) tone originating from the same laser diode (LD) over the 2 lanes of a duplex fiber to the remote receiver for coherent detection. Thus, this system allows the use of an uncooled LD with a large linewidth and reduces the complexity of digital signal processing (DSP) compared to that in a classical coherent system. A successful real-time demonstration with 600-Gb/s DP-64QAM using uncooled large-linewidth DFB lasers is conducted. Automatic stabilization against polarization fluctuations of the transmitted tone is achieved by the proposed polarization-tracking integrated coherent receiver in compact silicon photonics (SiP), tracking up to 300 rad/s without a performance penalty. The phase noise caused by mismatch and the link loss budget limitations are discussed and analyzed. This study shows that the proposed system is a potentially attractive solution for future 800G and 1.6T intra-data-center optical interconnects.

Abstract:We propose 4D modulation with direct detection employing a novel Stokes vector Kramers Kronig transceiver. It shows that employing a Stokes vector receiver, transmitting a digital carrier and using Kramers Kronig detection offer an effective way to de-rotate polarization multiplexed complex double side band signal without using a local oscillator at receiver. The impact of system parameters and configurations including carrier-to-signal-power ratio, guard band of the digital carrier, digital oversampling ratio and real MIMO is experimentally investigated. Finally, a record net data rate of 400 Gb/s (a raw rate of 480 Gb/s including FEC overhead) over 80 km SSMF is achieved in a 60 Gbaud PDM-16QAM single carrier experiment with a BER below the threshold of 2.0x10(-2).
