Abstract:The phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR), which could locate and demodulate perturbation along tens of kilometers sensing fiber with high spatial resolution and high sensitivity, has been applied in many fields, such as seismic wave detection, structure health monitoring, and so on. The phase retrieval of the Rayleigh backscattering light is the most critical process of Phi-OTDR; therefore, the research on the phase retrieval of (Phi-OTDR has attracted lots of attentions. It should be noted that in fiber-optic communications, the phase retrieval is also a crucial process for phase-encoded schemes. Particularly, as an effective phase retrieval scheme, the Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver proposed recently has become a hot topic in fiber-optic communications for its high spectral efficiency and low requirement of continuous-wave-to-signal power ratio. Therefore, this paper discusses the feasibility of applying the KK receiver into Phi-OTUR and analyzes the signal retrieval error with KK relation in Phi-OTDR; then, its performance in phase retrieval is verified through numerical simulations and experiments. All the results show that generally the KK receiver is a good phase retrieval scheme for heterodyne Phi-OTUR.

Abstract:The Kramers-Kronig(KK for short) relationship is a special case of Hilbert transformation, which describes the mathematical connection of square integrable function with causality between its real and imaginary parts. In this paper, the history, mathematics and physics essence of KK relationship are introduced. Its concrete form, meaning and application in electricity, magnetics, acoustics, optics, artificial medium and optical communication are presented, including its reflection and transmission functions, electric susceptibility, dielectric constant, refractive index, electrical conductivity, electrical impedance, magnetic permeability, atomic scattering factor, adiabatic compression coefficient, acoustic refractive index, single band time domain signal, space stealth medium and various nonlinear media and so on. The influence of truncation error on the calculation results of KK integral in practical applications is analyzed. Various integral limit extrapolation methods and various subtractive KK relationships based on anchor point are summarized, including single, multiple subtractive and differential multiple subtractive KK relationships.

Abstract:We propose and investigate the use of a Kramers–Kronig (KK) receiver in a single sideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing radio over fiber (SSB-OFDM-RoF) link based on an optical remote heterodyne solution. This scheme is effective in eliminating the signal-to-signal beating interference introduced by square-law detection of a photo-detector in an SSB-OFDM-RoF link. We extensively study the influences of different carrier-to-signal power ratios (CSPRs), laser linewidths, and transmission distances on our proposed scheme. It is proved that the KK-based receiver can reduce optimal CSPR by more than 5 dB and provide about 1.1 dB gain over the conventional mixer-based receiver scheme with CSPR of 11 dB after 75 km fiber transmission.

Abstract:Kramers-Krnig (K-K) relationship is widely used in diagnostics of longitudinal bunch distribution with frequency domain measurement, and it has been used as a powerful tool in analysis of bunch profile and length. The study results show that the bunching beam parameters are severely affected by the choosing of the baseline of autocorrelation curve, power loss at low frequency and cutoff at high frequency, as well as extrapolation point, etc. As an example, the longitudinal bunching length is measured by means of coherent transition radiation in accelerator laboratory of Tsinghua University. We analyze the influence of the choice of parameters on measured experiment results and discuss the method of choosing the key parameters for the K-K transform.

Abstract:As the capacity and the transmission distance of medium-reach optical fiber communication systems continue to increase, it is a major trend in demanding lower optical link budgets while maintaining the quality of signal transmission. We experimentally compared the transmission performance of the Kramers-Kronig (KK) and the coherent receivers in a 20-Gbaud quadrature phase shift keying (QPSK) system over a -thousand-kilometer standard single-mode fiber (SMF) link. Experimental results show that the KK receiver requires lower cost and simpler structure, and behaves similarly with the coherent receiver in the transmission under 1260 km, despite higher transmitted power and computational complexity.

Abstract:Coherent diffraction imaging (CDI) is a high-resolution technique that does not require X-ray lenses. With advances in scientific technology, such as synchrotron radiation, X-ray free-electron lasers, and coherent electron sources, CDI has been applied to diverse fields, such as biology, medicine, and semiconductors, as a high-resolution, nondestructive measure. With the rapid increase in demand for these applications, enhancing the efficiency of processing high-volume data has become a significant challenge for promotion. In this study, we proposed an algorithm that combines Kramers–Kronig (KK) relations with oversampling smoothness (OSS). The results were evaluated by introducing an error coefficient. We found that the error of the KK-OSS algorithm is always reduced by approximately 50% compared with the error reduction (ER) algorithm and OSS in real space. In the diffraction space, the error in the KK-OSS decreased by 15%. With 100 iterations, KK-OSS spent 163.1 s on reconstructing most of the sample information, while ER took 258.1 s and the reconstruction was still a random value. In Fraunhofer diffraction, it cost KK-OSS 58.8 s to reconstruct, while OSS took 61.9 s. Therefore, this method can reduce the reconstruction error, shorten the reconstruction time, and improve the efficiency compared with the ER and OSS algorithm using a random phase as the initial value.

Abstract:The KLD coefficient and the normalized KLD coefficient are proposed to characterize the correlation of multivariable series in order to overcome the intrinsic limitations of the KLD dimension density. Using the uncorrelated or perfectly correlated multivariable series, the upper and the lower bound functions of the KLD dimension density, and furthermore the upper and the lower bounds of the KLD coefficient are analytically deduced. Then, the normalized KLD coefficient is proposed in the paper. The analyses and numerical simulations prove that the changes of correlation of multivariable series can lead to linear variation of the normalized KLD coefficient. The simulations also prove that the normalized KLD coefficient can detect the changes of correlation sensitively, even if these are induced by only two channels of multivariable series. Furthermore, the normalized KLD coefficient can be used to analyze the nonstationary time series. The simulation results of coupled map lattice prove that the normalized KLD coefficient can also be used for the nonlinear system analysis.

Abstract:The Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver provides an efficient method to reconstruct the complex-valued optical field by means of intensity detection given a minimum-phase signal. In this paper, we analytically show that for detecting coherent states through measuring the minimum-phase signal, while keeping the radial quantum fluctuation the same as the balanced heterodyne detection does, the KK receiver can indirectly recover the tangential component with fluctuation equivalently reduced to 1/3 times the radial one at the decision time, by adopting the KK relations to utilize the information of the physically measured radial component of other time of the symbol period. In consequence, the KK receiver achieves 3/2 times the signal-to-noise ratio of balanced heterodyne detection, while presenting an asymmetric quantum fluctuation distribution depending on the time-varying phase. Therefore, the KK receiver provides a feasible scheme to reduce the quantum fluctuation for obtaining the selected component to 2/ 3 times that of physically measuring the same component of the coherent state. This work provides a physical insight of the KK receiver and should enrich the knowledge of electromagnetic noise in quantum optical measurement.

Abstract:Phase optical time domain reflectometer (Phi-OTDR) is capable of quantitatively gauging the perturbations on the fiber based on the linear relationship between the phase change and the strain of the fiber. However, various noises in the coherent Phi-OTDR system may deteriorate the accuracy of quantitative measurement. In this letter, the characteristic of the phase evolution along fiber is analyzed and the phase change is recovered through differential calculations in the direction of both fiber length and time. According to the linear characteristic of phase change, the accurate measurement result is finally obtained by fitting the trace of phase change with the method of total least square. The experimental results agree well with the theoretical analysis and five sets of measurements for the sinusoidal vibration are exceedingly consistent with each other. The variation coefficients of amplitude and frequency are 0.1931% and 0.0127%, respectively. And the minimum value of R-square representing the similarity between the measured waveform and the driving signal is 0.9999.

We investigate the influence of the order of these two operations on vibration retrieval, i.e., unwrapping the differential phase (UDP) and differentiating the unwrapped phase (DUP). The results demonstrate the UDP would add an extra DC value on the resulting phase and be unable to exactly restore temporal waveforms of vibration signals. Hence, it is necessary to firstly unwrap the original demodulated phase before performing differentiation to reliably restore the disturbances. Before retrieving temporal waveforms of vibration signals, a sliding rectification average (SRA) is applied to locate multiple events for better noise performance. In our experiment, the temporal waveforms of two different vibration sources at different positions are retrieved by phase changes extracted by the DUP. Abstract:We introduce and experimentally demonstrate a modified Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver with direct detection (DD) to realize an accurate optical field reconstruction at low carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR) condition. In our scheme, an exponential operation is applied to a single-sideband (SSB) signal, rather than a continuous-wave tone adding method in the conventional KK scheme. By this means, the minimum phase condition (MPC) is inherently satisfied, thus the optical field can be reconstructed accurately through KK relation at a low CSPR, leading to a high receiver sensitivity in a DD system. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted, in which an SSB signal is generated based on an 8-GBaud 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) data stream and then is transmitted over an 80-km single mode fiber (SMF). By using the modified KK technique, 1.1- and 0.9-dB sensitivity improvements are achieved in the optical back-to-back and after the fiber transmission cases, respectively. The proposed and the conventional KK schemes show similar BER performances at the optimum CSPR value with a high received optical power. In addition, we perform numerical simulations to study the impacts of bandwidth limitation and chromatic dispersion on the proposed minimum phase signal.
Practical Kramers-Kronig Phase Retrieval FIR Filter With the Gibbs Phenomenon

Abstract:Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver shows strong feasibility since the phase can be extracted from the detected intensity through the Hilbert transform (HT). To reduce the complexity and make the HT more suitable for the practical KK system, the HT can be approximated as the finite impulse response (FIR) filter, i.e., the HT-FIR filter. However, the finite Fourier series expansion of the HT-FIR filter suffers from oscillations around the discontinuities and further results in an unsatisfactory in-band flatness, which is the so-called Gibbs phenomenon. In the experiment and the simulation, we found that the performance of the KK system using the HT-FIR filter is strongly impaired due to the Gibbs phenomenon, by the roll-off factor of the shaping filter, frequency gap between the direct-current (DC) component and one edge of the signal spectrum, carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR), tap number of the HT-FIR filter, and the digital upsampling rate. We have systematically investigated the practical KK phase retrieval performance and the computational complexity considering the Gibbs phenomenon due to the adoption of the HT-FIR filter, rather than the HT used in the previous works without the Gibbs phenomenon. We conclude that there is an optimal upsampling rate when the HT-FIR filter is used, and the optimal upsampling rate is closely related to the five aspects mentioned above. We have carried out a transmission experiment using a 112-Gbits 16-QAM system over 1920-km with a Raman fiber amplifier to investigate the limit transmission performance of the practical KK receiver. The experimental results show that by using the 9-tap HT-FIR filter with a digital upsampling rate of 84-GHz (3-sps), the signals can be transmitted the same distance as the HT, up to 1440-km with a bit error ratio (BER) below the 20 soft-decision forward error correction threshold.

Abstract:This paper proposes and demonstrates a phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) sensing system with multi-spatial resolution (MSR) analysis property. With both theoretical analysis and an experiment, the qualitative relationship between spatial resolution (SR), signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and the length of the vibration region has been revealed, which indicates that choosing a suitable SR to analyze the vibration event can effectively enhance the SNR of a sensing system. The proposed MSR sensing scheme offers a promising solution for the performance optimization of Phi-OTDR sensing systems, which can restore vibration events of different disturbance range with optimum SNR in merely a single measurement while maintaining the same detectable frequency range.

Firstly, the DC residual term of the quadrature imbalance is eliminated by calculating the mean value of the envelope. Further, the cyclic symmetry of the AC orthogonal unbalance is tracked to complete parameter estimation, and then the orthogonal unbalance correction is completed through an adaptive filtering method. The experimental results show that under the condition of the detection light pulse with a repetition frequency of 5 KHz and a pulse width of 100 ns, the RLS compensation algorithm greatly improves the demodulation characteristics of the system and suppresses the quadrature imbalance. Abstract:Phase-sensitive Optical-Time-Domain Reflectometry (Phi-OTDR) is a useful distributed fiber-optic sensing technology to detect and locate multiple dynamic disturbances, offering a cost-effective and sensitive solution for intrusion monitoring of long perimeters. The Phi-OTDR is affected by laser frequency drift, air movement, transient acoustic interference and environmental noises. resulting in high Nuisance Alarm Rates (NARs). In this paper, we proposed a novel intrusion signal processing method based on the singular spectrum analysis of the longitudinal time sequence of the Phi-OTDR. The experimental results shows that true intrusions can be correctly distinguished from varying background noises and sound or air movement interferences. The probability for correct detection can be improved up to similar to 94% and false alarm rate can be controlled as low as similar to 6%.

Abstract:Location error and false alarm are noticeable problems in fiber distributed acoustic sensing systems based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). A novel method based on signal kurtosis is proposed to locate and discriminate perturbations in Φ-OTDR systems. The spatial kurtosis (SK) along the fiber is firstly obtained by calculating the kurtosis of acoustic signals at each position of the fiber in a short time period. After the moving average on the spatial dimension, the spatial average kurtosis (SAK) is then obtained, whose peak can accurately locate the center of the vibration segment. By comparing the SAK value with a certain threshold, we may to some degree discriminate the instantaneous destructive perturbations from the system noise and certain ambient environmental interferences. The experimental results show that, comparing with the average of the previous localization methods, the SAK method improves the pencil-break and digging locating signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) by 16.6 dB and 17.3 dB, respectively; and decreases the location standard deviation by 7.3 m and 9.1 m, respectively. For the instantaneous destructive perturbation (pencil-break and digging) detection, the false alarm rate can be as low as 1.02%, while the detection probability is maintained as high as 95.57%. In addition, the time consumption of the SAK method is adequate for a real-time Φ-OTDR system.

Abstract:The phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry（Φ-OTDR） sensing system has the characteristics of high dynamic response and high sensitivity, and has great potential in the field of large-scale engineering structural health monitoring. The instrumentation level and engineering application of Φ-OTDR systems depend to a large extent on digital signal processing（DSP） technology. This paper compares and analyzes the main digital signal processing methods and technologies of Φ-OTDR systems in signal quantization, demodulation, noise suppression, and pattern recognition in recent years. The importance and method of combining digital signal processing with industry background knowledge in engineering applications are expounded, and the development status and trend of the digital signal processing methods in Φ-OTDR systems are summarized and prospected.
