Abstract:Photonic crystal (PhC) cavities have been widely utilized for the optical trapping. However, it is still challenging to achieve high-efficiency optical trapping of ultrasmall nanoparticles. In this paper, we show optical trapping of a 3 nm size single nanoparticle by using an ultrahigh Q/V bow-tie-shaped PhC nanobeam cavity. For the trapping of a single polystyrene nanoparticle with the radius as small as 3 nm, a maximum trapping force of 1.2 × 105 pN/mW is theoretically obtained, which is at least one order of magnitude higher than the previous results. Furthermore, the calculated sensitivity for the cavity is around 350 nm/RIU, which provides a valid solution for monitoring the trapping process of the nanoparticles with ultrasmall size. We believe that such structure with characteristics of extreme light confinement and high trapping efficiency will be conducive to the development of multifunctional on-chip trapping devices.

Abstract:We propose a new type of hybrid-cavity structure for trapping nanoscale particles. The hybrid cavity is based on a ring waveguide with the incorporation of a photonic crystal nanobeam cavity (PCNC). We design the cavity and investigate the influence of geometric parameters on its performance and optical trapping ability. The numerical results show that high quality factor, low mode volume and strong optical trapping ability can be achieved. The radii of holes are quadratically tapered from the center to two sides with a smaller period in the mirrors of the PCNC and the optical trapping force is proportional to (1−T)Q/V of the cavity. Furthermore, a hybrid cavity with optimal trapping ability is realized with quality factor up to 1.98×106, mode volume as low as 1.90(λ∕nSi)3 and its optical trapping force can be as high as −855 pN/mW, which is 15 times enhanced compared to that of a microring resonator with the same radius.

Optomechanically induced optical trapping system based on photonic crystal cavities

Abstract:Optical trapping has proven to be a valuable experimental technique for precisely controlling small dielectric objects. However, due to their very nature, conventional optical traps are diffraction limited and require high intensities to confine the dielectric objects. In this work, we propose a novel optical trap based on dielectric photonic crystal nanobeam cavities, which overcomes the limitations of conventional optical traps by significant factors. This is achieved by exploiting an optomechanically induced backaction mechanism between a dielectric nanoparticle and the cavities. We perform numerical simulations to show that our trap can fully levitate a submicron-scale dielectric particle with a trap width as narrow as 56 nm. It allows for achieving a high trap stiffness, therefore, a high Q-frequency product for the particle's motion while reducing the optical absorption by a factor of 43 compared to the cases for conventional optical tweezers. Moreover, we show that multiple laser tones can be used further to create a complex, dynamic potential landscape with feature sizes well below the diffraction limit. The presented optical trapping system offers new opportunities for precision sensing and fundamental quantum experiments based on levitated particles.

Abstract:Optical trapping techniques are of great interest since they have the advantage of enabling the direct handling of nanoparticles. Among various optical trapping systems, photonic crystal nanobeam cavities have attracted great attention for integrated on-chip trapping and manipulation. However, optical trapping with high efficiency and low input power is still a big challenge in nanobeam cavities because most of the light energy is confined within the solid dielectric region. To this end, by incorporating a nanoslotted structure into an ultracompact one-dimensional photonic crystal nanobeam cavity structure, we design a promising on-chip device with ultralarge trapping potential depth to enhance the optical trapping characteristic of the cavity. In this work, we first provide a systematic analysis of the optical trapping force for an airborne polystyrene (PS) nanoparticle trapped in a cavity model. Then, to validate the theoretical analysis, the numerical simulation proof is demonstrated in detail by using the three-dimensional finite element method. For trapping a PS nanoparticle of 10 nm radius within the air-slot, a maximum trapping force as high as 8.28 nN/mW and a depth of trapping potential as large as 1.15×105 kBT mW 1 are obtained, where kB is the Boltzmann constant and T is the system temperature. We estimate a lateral trapping stiffness of 167.17 pN·nm 1· mW 1 for a 10 nm radius PS nanoparticle along the cavity x-axis, more than two orders of magnitude higher than previously demonstrated on-chip, near field traps. Moreover, the threshold power for stable trapping as low as 0.087 μW is achieved. In addition, trapping of a single 25 nm radius PS nanoparticle causes a 0.6 nm redshift in peak wavelength. Thus, the proposed cavity device can be used to detect single nanoparticle trapping by monitoring the resonant peak wavelength shift. We believe that the architecture with features of an ultracompact footprint, high integrability with optical waveguides/circuits, and efficient trapping demonstrated here will provide a promising candidate for developing a lab-on-a-chip device with versatile functionalities.
Arbitrary Manipulation of Micro-Particles in Three Dimensions by Steering of Multiple Orbital Angular Momentum Modes

Abstract:Optical tweezers is an increasingly important technique for controlling and probing particles since computer-generated holography (CGH) make steering of multiple traps individually possible. In addition, the dark focus of orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams is increasingly widely used in trapping reflecting, absorbing or low-dielectric-constant objects. In this paper, we present a method to create arbitrary three-dimensional configurations of orbital angular momentum modes to achieve manipulation of micro-particles. Compared with conventional optical tweezers, this method can steer mixed arrays of traps individually and randomly by producing three-dimensional structure of optical vortices. These optical traps we used was formed by a CGH generated complex phase mask, which has three components: 1) a helical phase mask to change the transverse phase structure, 2) a blazed grating phase mask to vary the propagation direction of the incident beams, and 3) a modulated grating phase mask to divert the focal plane from the planar configurations. The latter one ensure that we can form threedimensional trapping patterns. The trap patterns can also be generated dynamically by holographic display system based on liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS). The experimental results show that the refresh frequency of reconfiguring achieves 24fps. Our method is effective and promise an exciting new opportunity to be used as a valuable non-contact manipulation tool in various applications.
Systematic Analysis of Optical Gradient Force in Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Cavities

Abstract:In this work, we provide systematic analysis of the optical force for a particle trapped in the waveguide/cavity/waveguide system. The theoretical analysis shows that the optical trapping force is proportional to QT1/2/V for the particle at a fixed position. We provide numerical proof for the proposed principles and systematically optimize the design recipe to investigate optical tapping force of photonic crystal (PhC) nanobeam cavities. The numerical results are in accordance with theoretical analysis and show that the maximum optical trapping force for a particle occurs at the transmission of cavity around 0.25 and the maxima are almost the same for different PhC cavities.
Optical Trapping Based on Microring Resonators with a Transverse Slot Structure.

Abstract:Over the past few decades, optical manipulation has emerged as a highly successful tool in various fields such as biology, micro/nanorobotics, and physics. Among the different techniques, the transverse slot optical waveguide has shown remarkable potential in enhancing the field and significantly improving optical trapping capabilities. Additionally, microring resonators have demonstrated the ability to enhance the field at specific resonance wavelengths, enabling the manipulation and capture of particles. In this study, we investigated the impact of the structure on nanoparticle capture by introducing a 50 nm transverse slot in a 5 mu m microring resonator. Through the integration of a transverse slot in the microring resonator, we observed a substantial increase in the maximum bound optical power for a nanosphere with a refractive index of 1.6 and a diameter of 50 nm, reaching 3988.8 pN/W. This value is 2292 times higher than the maximum optical force in a straight waveguide and 2.266 times higher than the maximum optical force in a microring resonator. The proposed structure significantly enhances the optical trapping capabilities for nanoscale particles, thus paving the way for the development of advanced micro/nanomanipulation techniques. Abstract:A slotted nanobeam cavity (SNC) is utilized to trap a polystyrene (PS) particle with a radius of only 2 nm. The carefully designed SNC shows an ultrahigh Q factor of 4.5 × 107 while maintaining a small mode volume of 0.067(λ/nwater)3. Strongly enhanced optical trapping force is numerically demonstrated when the 2 nm PS particle is introduced into the central, slotted part of the SNC. In the vertical direction, the numerical calculation results show that a trapping stiffness of 0.4 pN/(nm · mW) around the equilibrium position and a trapping potential barrier of ~2000 kBT/mW can be reached. To our best knowledge, the trapping capability (trapping stiffness and trapping potential barrier) of the proposed structure significantly outperforms the theoretical results of those in previously reported work. In addition, the SNC system does not suffer from the metal induced heat issue that restricts the performance of state-of-the-art optical trapping systems involving plasmonic enhancement. Based on the proposed cavity, applications such as lab-on-a-chip platforms for nanoscale particle trapping and analysis can be expected in future.
On-chip Trapping and Sorting of Nanoparticles Using a Single Slotted Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Cavity.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a slotted photonic crystal nanobeam cavity (PCNC) to trap and sort the 120 nm and 30 nm nanoparticles. The simulation shows that the maximum optical trapping force of the 120 nm particle is 38.7 pN/mW, and that of the 30 nm particle is 10.8 pN/mW. It is calculated that the trapping threshold power of the 120 nm particle is 35.3 µW, and that of the 30 nm particle is 41.6 µW. Because the width of the slot is 100 nm, when the input power is between 35.3 µW and 41.6 µW, only the 120 nm particle can be trapped in the upper cladding of the slotted-PCNC. When the input power is greater than 41.6 µW, the 120 nm particle is still trapped in the upper cladding of the slotted-PCNC, while the 30 nm particle is trapped inside the slot of the slotted-PCNC. By properly controlling the input power and the direction of flow in the microfluidic channel, the sorting of particles can be achieved. In addition, trapping of the particles causes different redshifts of peak wavelengths. Thus, the proposed slotted-PCNC can detect particle trapping and sorting by monitoring the resonant wavelength shifts. What is the most important, compared with previous reported single particle trapping work, is that the proposed work can realize both trapping and sorting. Therefore, provided with the ultra-compact footprint and excellent performance, the proposed slotted-PCNC shows great potential for a multifunctional lab-on-a-chip system.

Parallel Trapping of Multiple Nanoparticles Using a Quasi-Bound State in the Continuum Mode

Abstract:In this work, we put forward an all-dielectric nanotweezer using a quasi-bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC) mode to trap nanoparticles with a radius of 10 nm. The quasi-BIC mode provides not only a very high electric field enhancement but also a high quality factor ( Q -factor), which gives it potential for the trapping of nanoparticles with low laser power and high stability. The simulation results show that when the input intensity is 1 m W / µ m 2 , the maximum optical trapping force of the 10 nm particles is 2.24 pN, and the maximum trapping potential is 29.08 k B T . Furthermore, the proposed nanotweezer array provides multiple optical hotspots with high field confinement and enhancement, resulting in multiple trapping sites for the parallel trapping of multiple nanoparticles. The high-throughput trapping of nanoparticles provides a good foundation for studying biological cells and protein molecules, especially for the heterogeneity of cells and the large-scale parallel analyses of basic drugs.
Ultrasmall-V High-Q Photonic Crystal Nanobeam Microcavities Based on Slot and Hollow-Core Waveguides

Abstract:Photonic crystal nanobeam microcavities based on slot and hollow-core waveguides were proposed and analyzed. Three-dimensional finite-difference time-domain simulations show that both an ultrasmall modal volume (V) and a high quality (Q) factor can be obtained simultaneously in hollow-core-nanobeam mirocavities (HCNMs) due to the strong confinement of fields in the two lateral directions. For a 6.5-mu m-long HCNM, the Q factor and V are on the order of 10(5) and 10(-2) (lambda/2n)(3), respectively. With compactness, lower fabrication requirements as well as ultrahigh Q/V, the proposed microcavities would be very promising in a variety of applications. (c) 2011 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Optical trapping enables precise control of individual particles of different sizes, such as atoms, molecules, or nanospheres. Optical tweezers provide free-space omnidirectional optical trapping of objects in laboratories around the world. As an alternative to standard macroscopic setups based on lenses, which are inherently bound by the diffraction limit, plasmonic and photonic nanostructures promise trapping by near-field optical effects on the extreme nanoscale. However, the practical design of lossless waveguide-coupled nanostructures capable of trapping sub-wavelength-sized particles in all spatial directions has until now proven insurmountable. In this work, we demonstrate an omnidirectional optical trap realized by inverse-designing fabrication-ready integrated dielectric nanocavities. The sub-wavelength optical trap is designed to rely solely on the gradient force and is thus particle-size agnostic. In particular, we show how a trapped particle with a radius of 15 nm experiences a force strong enough to overcome room-temperature thermal fluctuations. Furthermore, through the robust inverse design framework, we tailor manufacturable devices operating at short-wave infrared and near-infrared wavelengths. Our results open a new regime of levitated optical trapping by achieving a deep trapping potential capable of trapping single sub-wavelength particles in all directions using optical gradient forces. We anticipate potentially groundbreaking applications of the optimized optical trapping system for biomolecular analysis in aqueous environments, levitated cavity-optomechanics, and cold atom physics, constituting an important step towards realizing integrated bio-nanophotonics and mesoscopic quantum mechanical experiments.

Abstract:The radiation force of modified circular Airy beams (MCAB) exerted on both a high-refractive-index particle and a low-refractive-index particle are analyzed in this paper. Our results show that the two kinds of particles can be simultaneously stably trapped by MCAB at different positions. Compared with the common circular Airy beams (CAB) with the same parameters, trapping forces on the two kinds of particles are greatly increased because of the enhanced abruptly autofocusing property and the appearance of hollow region in MCAB. The trapping forces can be modulated by varying parameters of MCAB, and it is important to choose appropriate parameters to trap particles in practice. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:We present optical trapping with a 10 nm gap resonant coaxial nanoaperture in a gold film. Large arrays of 600 resonant plasmonic coaxial nanoaperture traps are produced on a single chip via atomic layer lithography with each aperture tuned to match a 785 nm laser source. We show that these single coaxial apertures can act as efficient nanotweezers with a sharp potential well, capable of trapping 30 nm polystyrene nanoparticles and streptavidin molecules with a laser power as low as 4.7 mW. Furthermore, the resonant coaxial nanoaperture enables real-time label-free detection of the trapping events via simple transmission measurements. Our fabrication technique is scalable and reproducible, since the critical nanogap dimension is defined by atomic layer deposition. Thus our platform shows significant potential to push the limit of optical trapping technologies.

Abstract:A nanofiber-based optical tweezer is demonstrated. Trapping is achieved by combining attractive near-field optical gradient forces with repulsive electrostatic forces. Silica-coated Fe2O3 nanospheres of 300 diameter are trapped as close as 50 nm away from the surface with 810 μW of optical power, with a maximum trap stiffness of 2.7 pN μm−1. Electrostatic trapping forces up to 0.5 pN are achieved, a factor of 50 larger than those achievable for the same optical power in conventional optical tweezers. Efficient collection of the optical field directly into the nanofiber enables ultra-sensitive tracking of nanoparticle motion and extraction of its characteristic Brownian motion spectrum, with a minimum position sensitivity of 3.4 Å/Hz.

Nanoparticle Trapping in a Quasi-BIC System

Abstract:Plasmonic nanotweezers employing metallic nanoantennas provide a powerful tool for trapping nanoscale particles, but the strong heating effect resulting from light absorption limits widespread applications. Here, we propose an all-dielectric nanotweezer harnessing quasi-bound states in the continuum (quasi-BICs) to enable the trapping of nanoscale objects with low laser power and a negligible heating effect. The quasi-BIC system provides very high electromagnetic field intensity enhancement that is an order of magnitude higher than plasmonic systems as well as high-quality-factor resonances comparable to photonic crystal cavities. Furthermore, the quasi-BIC metasurface tweezer array provides multiple optical hotspots with high field confinement and enhancement, thereby generating multiple trapping sites for the high-throughput trapping of nanometer-scale objects. By purposefully truncating the tips of the constituent elliptical nanoantennas in the quasi-BIC system to leverage the asymmetric field distribution, we demonstrate that the optical gradient forces can be further enhanced by a factor of 1.32 in comparison to the intact elliptical nanoantenna, which has attractive potential in subwavelength particle trapping applications. In addition, we show that trapped particles can improve the resonance mode of the cavity rather than suppress it in a symmetry-broken system, which in turn enhances the trapping process. Dynamic Nanoparticle Trapping By Cascaded Nanophotonic Traps in a Silicon Slot Waveguide

Abstract:Nanophotonic traps integrated in a microfluidic channel are promising for next-generation multifunctional and flexible lab-on-chip systems, especially for researches in nanobiophotonics. Here we propose a slot waveguide with a nano-slit to produce a high gradient of optical field in a tiny space, which exhibits strong optical force to trap nanoparticles. Moreover, the slits can be cascaded along the direction of light propagation to form a large array of optical traps, with negligible reflection and loss, which is expected to be useful in study of biological nanoparticles. The trapping dynamics of nanoparticles to the proposed nanophotonic traps is analyzed, which reveals physically cascaded trapping processes enabled by the slot and the slit, respectively. The motion trajectories of the particles of 50 nm in diameter are obtained with the Brownian motion taken into account, which shows successful trapping of the nanoparticles.
