Abstract:An inelastic hyperspectral Scheimpflug lidar system is developed for range-resolved oil pollution detection and discrimination. A theory of system parametric design is built for aquatic circumstances, and laser-induced fluorescence spectra with an excitation wavelength of 446 nm are employed to detect oil pollution. Seven kinds of typical oil samples are tested and well distinguished using the principal component analysis (PCA) and linear discriminant analysis (LDA) methods. It has been shown that blue laser diodes (LD) have great potential for oil pollution detection, and our system could be further utilized for more applications in both marine and terrestrial environments. Abstract:The increasing amount of petroleum products has increased the risk of the pollution accidents, which could pose an acute threat to ecological safety. The leakage accidents often have the characteristics of suddenness, contingency and large pollution. The traditional chemical sampling detection method is not suitable for on-site emergency monitoring and quantitative warning. The development of satellite remote sensing and airborne imaging technology provides effective methods for the detection of accidents. However, the color characteristics of the floating transparent oil product are not obvious, and it seriously affects the imaging monitoring effect and poses a great threat to ecological security. According to the difference of the spectral reflectance characteristics of the water surface and the oil product, selecting a suitable operating band to improve the imaging effect is a common method for oil spill monitoring. For the spectral measurement of floating oil products, the existing researches were often carried out in the experimental containers, which have different optical characteristics in natural water. It is difficult to provide corresponding data support for the monitoring of on-site leakage accidents. In order to simulate the actual leakage scene, UV-Visible spectroscopic characteristics of transparent oils such as gasoline and xylene were investigated on the surface of artificial lake in this paper. Spectral measurement results show that the spectral angle cosine of the sample and water in each band interval is close to 1, but the spectral reflectance difference is significantly larger than the other band in the ultraviolet band, indicating the spectral characteristics of transparent oil were similar to the lake water in shape, but there is the largest difference in amplitude in the ultraviolet wavelength. To further demonstrate the results of spectral feature analysis, four ultraviolet-visible band filters of 365, 436, 546 and 700 nm were selected for imaging verification. The results show that the difference between the spectral reflectance curve of transparent oils such as floating gasoline and xylene and the amplitude of lake water is the largest at the ultraviolet wavelength, and the overall grayscale contrast of the two floating transparent oils and lake water at the ultraviolet wavelength is made. The difference between value and texture features is significantly higher than that in other visible wavelengths. Therefore, the use of the ultraviolet wavelength for imaging monitoring of floating oil products can effectively improve the imaging contrast between oil and natural water surface. The experiments were carried out under the conditions of natural light and natural water on the lake surface, which greatly simulated the actual transparent oil spill pollution scenarios and provided the most representative theoretical and data support for transparent oil imaging band optimization for airborne remote sensing monitoring.

Abstract:A pattern recognition model for aerosol classification with atmospheric backscatter lidars is proposed and studied in detail. The theoretical framework and the implementation process of the proposed model are presented. Computer simulations have been carried out to verify the practicability and robustness of this model. The k-fold cross-validation method is employed in the process of classifier designing to choose the proper decision rule, which is mainly based on statistical pattern recognition theory. At the same time, the validity of the model is evaluated. The generalized self-validation is also carried out in the computer simulations to verify the stability of the model. The analysis of the performances in reduced status, especially the instance of application to Cloud-Aerosol Lidar with Orthogonal Polarization, demonstrates the generalization ability and performance of this model. Neural Networks in Detection and Identification of Littoral Oil Pollution by Remote Sensing

Abstract:In order to differentiate classes of oil-spills on water surface, a neural network (NN) approach is applied for spectral data analysis and identification of airborne laser fluorosensor in this paper. The target to be detected may be one of the following: seawater, lube, diesel, etc. The primary requirement for airborne sensors is to identify the substances targeted by the laser beam. Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC) method is one of the most current approaches. This paper outlines the NN model for the identification of the spilled oils, and makes a comparison with PCC in an effort to increase the level of confidence in the identification results. The results of ground tests using known targets show an increased confidence in the results when using the NN Model compared to that of PCC. It is believed that the NN model would play a significant role in the ocean oil-spill identification in the future.

Abstract:Taking advantage of the broad spectrum of the Cabannes-Brillouin scatter from atmospheric molecules, the high spectral resolution lidar (HSRL) technique employs a narrow spectral filter to separate the aerosol and molecular scattering components in the lidar return signals and therefore can obtain the aerosol optical properties as well as the lidar ratio (i.e., the extinction-to-backscatter ratio) which is normally selected or modeled in traditional backscatter lidars. A polarized HSRL instrument, which employs an interferometric spectral filter, is under development at the Zhejiang University (ZJU), China. In this paper, the theoretical basis to retrieve the aerosol lidar ratio, depolarization ratio and extinction and backscatter coefficients, is presented. Error analyses and sensitivity studies have been carried out on the spectral transmittance characteristics of the spectral filter. The result shows that a filter that has as small aerosol transmittance (i.e., large aerosol rejection rate) and large molecular transmittance as possible is desirable. To achieve accurate retrieval, the transmittance of the spectral filter for molecular and aerosol scattering signals should be well characterized.

Abstract:Laser-induced fluorescence lidar (LIF-LiDAR) is an effective technology for the stand-off detection, identification, and quantification of oil spills on the water surface. In this work, by using a self-developed LIF-LiDAR system, the laser-induced spectra of different oils with different thicknesses on the water surface were remotely measured at a distance of 100 m. The traditional algorithms based on the similarity degree of matching spectra are adopted to identify the oil types, which results in the 65% (min = 33.68%) and 85% (max = 98.66%) average matching accuracy when the pure oil spectra (infinite thickness) and the average oil spectra (different thickness) are introduced as the database, respectively. Furthermore, to avoid the influence of the pretreatment process in the traditional matching method, the machine learning (ML) model is applied to classify the oil types and an identifying accuracy of nearly 100% is successfully achieved. Our results presented in this work not only demonstrate the good performance of the classification models of fine tree, linear discriminant analysis (LDA), support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), and neural network (NN) in remote oil-type identification but also the capability of the combination of LIF-LiDAR and ML algorithms on the high-accuracy identification in the types of oil films on water.

Abstract:Sea surface windspeed is one of the important factors that affects the reflection and radiation intensity of the sea surface oil film, posing challenges for the oil spill classification via marine optical remote sensing. A new method is proposed to extract significant windspeed features from the original hyperspectral remote sensing data and apply them to the qualitative analysis and quantitative estimation of local windspeed. First, a portable push-broom hyperspectral sensor was utilized to collect the hyperspectral data under different experimental windspeed conditions. After that the data was divided into spatial-spectral hyperspectral data along the spectrum slit direction and finally converted into spatial-spectral joint heat maps (SSHMs). Incorporating a transfer learning methodology, we utilized SSHMs as input to optimize the training process of windspeed estimation. This approach yielded dependable evaluation results. Moreover, we developed an effective deep learning framework that integrates spatial and spectral analyses for the categorization of sea surface oil films. This framework utilizes hyperspectral image datasets which have already removed the influence of windspeed variables. The proposed method demonstrated outstanding performance in estimating windspeed and classifying oil films using both experimental and AVIRIS datasets. This paper introduces a feasibility study for ocean surface windspeed estimation and precise identification of oil spills using optical remote sensing technology.

Abstract:Marine oil spills cause great pollution to the marine environment and require development of efficient cleaning plans. Accurate identification of the oil type involved in the spill is of great significance for rapid and effective treatment. Hyperspectral remote sensing plays an important role in oil spill detection and oil type identification. We designed an outdoor oil spill experiment to simulate an oil spill in a marine environment. Five common oil types were selected as the experimental starting materials: crude oil, fuel oil, diesel oil, gasoline, and palm oil. Hyperspectral data of the five oils were collected from different solar times by Analytical Spectral Devices (ASD) FieldSpec4. The relationship between the spectral absorption baseline height of the different oil types and solar time is investigated. The characteristic analysis method of spectral standard deviation was used to obtain characteristic bands of the different oil types. Using both full spectrum and selected characteristic bands, oil type identification experiments were performed using the Support Vector Machine (SVM) model, respectively. The results show that oil type identification using selected characteristic bands is 3.70% more accurate compared with that using the full spectrum, reaching 83.33%.

Pattern recognition analysis of marine oil spills in airborne passive infrared multispectral remote sensing images

Abstract:Pattern recognition methodology was developed for the automated detection of marine oil spills in passive infrared multispectral remote sensing images. The images employed in this work were collected from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill accident in 2010. The imaging instrument for data collection was a downward-looking infrared line scanner equipped with eight optical bandpass filters in the spectral range of 8-12 μm on a fixed-wing aircraft. Oil slicks may show either positive or negative thermal contrast against the surrounding sea water, depending on the sun glint conditions or the oil thickness. Classifiers were developed separately to detect oil with different contrasts by the application of backpropagation neural networks to the preprocessed radiances. Preprocessing strategies included: (1) assembly of training data through k-means clustering analysis; (2) elimination of variation in radiance magnitudes by a customized temperature correction method; (3) removal of sun glint artifacts in images by polynomial correction; and (4) extraction of the most representative features as inputs for the neural networks by a subset selection approach. The classifiers designed to detect oil with positive and negative thermal contrast relative to water achieved overall classification accuracies of 88.7 and 92.2%, respectively. Composite classification images were generated by integrating classification scores produced by the two classifiers. The prediction performance of the classification system was demonstrated through its application to images not involved during the training of the networks.

Abstract:Oil emulsions can harm marine and coastal environments for extended periods. Timely identification and quantification of oil emulsions are essential for oil spill response. Although SAR is the most commonly used technique in detecting oil presence, it has limits in oil quantification. In contrast, optical remote sensing can fill this gap with more spectral bands. Hyperspectral remote sensing is capable of achieving this purpose. However, it is challenging to use multi-band coarse-resolution imagery due to the fewer bands and mixed pixel effect. Through laboratory measurements, numerical simulation, and Hue-Saturation-Value (HSV) model, we illuminate the multispectral mixed characteristics of oil emulsions and demonstrate Hue's role in characterizing the mixture features and oil concentration trends. Hue-based oil emulsion classification and oil concentration segmentation (OCS) methods are proposed and applied to Landsat-5 images under quantified uncertainties. This approach is expected to expand its application in multispectral remote sensing.

Abstract:This paper investigated the use of spectra and multispectral images for on-site visualized classification of transparent hazards and noxious substances (HNS), such as benzene, xylene, and palm oil, floating on a water surface with the potential use for rapid classification of multiple HNS during a leak accident. Partial least-squares discrimination analysis (PLS-DA) and least-squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) models achieved a classification accuracy of 100% for spectral reflectance (325-900 nm) and multispectral image at nine wavelengths. Wavelength division and selection were applied for spectra and spectral images, respectively, to reduce the difficulty in data collection and to simplify the redundant bands. This was followed by PLS-DA and LS-SVM modeling. The LS-SVM model based on the least wavelengths (365, 410, 450, and 850 nm) of multispectral images was suggested as the most effective method for on-site visualized classification of transparent HNS on a water surface. Abstract:Marine oil spills cause pollution to the environment, where timely information on the oil characteristics (i.e., oil types, concentration, thickness) is essential for spill response and post-spill assessment. Existing remote sensing models (including deep-learning or DL) have been applied to both synthetic aperture radar (SAR) and optical remote sensing images, which are primarily for presence/absence detection. Here, we propose a framework to take advantage of data richness (i.e., multi-band observations under different viewing conditions) of optical sensors to characterize oil spills beyond presence/absence detection. The framework includes a 2-step DL model (F1-score ∼ 0.88) to account for the spectral-spatial-geometrical features of optical images to achieve the presence/absence detection, and a spectral model to characterize oil type and estimate oil quantity. The framework led to a relatively comprehensive "ground truth" dataset ( N = 105 oil spill cases with 1616 oil features of each being at least 3 × 3 pixels) including all possible scenarios to account for various oil types and observing conditions, which can be used in the future for model development. Application of the framework to >25,000 HY-1C/D CZI images between December 2018 and April 2023 revealed substantial oil spills in the marginal seas off China, whose spatial distributions and oil characteristics (e.g., normalized concentration, thickness, and volume) were all quantified. The DL model also appears to be applicable to other Sentinel-1 SAR as well as to other optical sensors such as Landsat Operational Land Imager (OLI) and Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI). The use of multi-sensor data with the proposed approach over an oil spill event in the Gulf of Mexico shows improved temporal coverage as well as better knowledge on where most of the spilled oil can be found.

Abstract:Oil spills cause serious harm to aquatic ecosystems, so rapid and accurate monitoring is needed to take timely action. Traditional methods usually use satellite remote sensing, buoy sensors, or unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). Satellite remote sensing is affected by resolution, transit time, and weather conditions, so it is impossible to monitor oil spills in small-scale and inclement weather conditions continuously and accurately. Buoy monitoring is a point-based measurement, unable to obtain the oil spill distribution, UAVs are limited by endurance time, and cannot conduct long-term monitoring. Here shore-based hyperspectral scanning image technology is proposed, which combines hyperspectral image and remote sensing technology with high resolution and spectral extraction capabilities. This method provides long-term, high-frequency, and real-time monitoring, forecasting, and early warning. A shore-based hyperspectral imaging device was developed to complete the actual field data acquisition and model verification in Three Gorges of China. The results show the precision of oil spill recognition is 84%, and the oil spill recall rate is 89% using the developed weighted CatBoost oil spill classification. The water recognition is close to 100%. The recall rate is also near 100%. The average relative error of oil spill thickness based on the multi-scale continuous wavelet transform model is 23.1%, which shows that the method is effective and can be extended in the oil-spill monitoring for ports, factories, and pipelines.

Abstract:Coastal estuaries, characterized by highly varying waters with complex optical properties, pose challenges for effective oil discrimination via optical remote sensing. In this study, an object-based spectra comparison (OBSC) approach was proposed to extract emulsified oil slicks from Balikpapan Bay, Indonesia, using optical imagery from Sentinel-2 Multispectral Instrument (MSI) and PlanetScope. The OBSC approach utilizes the spectral signatures of oil emulsion to develop emulsified oil index and normalized emulsified oil index to identify potentially emulsified oil objects from MSI and PlanetScope, respectively. Reflectance spectra of the potential objects were compared with those from dynamically-selected nearby waters to rule out false-positive detections, accounting for the varying water optical properties in the estuary. This OBSC approach performed well in extracting emulsified oil slicks from optical images. Moreover, multiple sensor capabilities for oil detection were compared, and requirements for detection and discrimination of oil spills in the coastal estuary environment were further discussed.

Abstract:Optical remote sensing is applied in the identification, classification, and quantification of weathered oil spills. The automatic detection of oil spills through optical imaging is yet a challenge because various oils under different sunglint reflections have complex optical image characteristics. Generally, there are two types of weathered oil spills, namely, non-emulsified oil slicks (NEOS) and oil emulsions (OE), which show different image characteristics under various sunglint reflections. The Coastal Zone Imager (CZI) onboard China’s HaiYang-1C/D (HY-1C/D) satellites can provide multispectral images with high spatial resolution and wide coverage for operational monitoring of oil spills. In this study, we applied an adaptive dynamic detector incorporating a built-in oil–water mixture distribution classifier, specifically for different sunglint reflections, to automatically extract oil spills from CZI images. The spatial heterogeneity distribution of various oil spills could be quantified using a novel separability index, and then, the optimal oil–water segmentation proportion and scale could be obtained. Oil spills are discriminated and extracted under different sunglint reflections, with the variable scale detector implemented by tiling sliding windows of classifiers on detection images, from which respective volumes are derived with lower uncertainties. This approach also uses spatial and spectral ancillary information to improve weathered oil extraction confidence. The results show stable variable-scale extraction accuracies of approximately 90% and 80% for NEOS and EO, respectively. Therefore, the spatio–spectral–distribution comprehensive feature provides a new approach for the automatic extraction of oil spills from optical remote sensing images.
Remote Sensing of Oil Pollution by Portable Laser Induced Fluorescence Lidar

Abstract:A portable laser induced fluorescence (LIF) lidar is designed and developed for oil pollution monitoring. A 405nm violet light is used as excitation light source. A dual Amici prism spectroscopic structure to split the fluorescence signal in the spectral range of 450-1000nm, and an image intensifier combined with array CCD to achieve high sensitivity detection. The system integrates control, data acquisition and data processing modules, which can realize the real-time detection of the composition and content of pollutants. The fluorescence spectra of seawater, diesel oil, oil and crude oil were measured at 30m. The spectra of diesel oil, engine oil and crude oil with concentration at 0.05, 0.01 and 0.01mg/L are measured. The LIF oil pollution monitoring system can accurately distinguish oil spill pollutants such as type and grade. It has small volume, light weight, high integration, high detection sensitivity and good stability characteristics, which can be loaded in small aircraft, unmanned aerial vehicles, ships for oil spill remote sensing.

Abstract:The high spectral lidar principled sample machine that can obtain the target spectral information as well as the twodimensional images was developed from the perspective of motoring the marine oil spill pollution in this thesis, this high spectral lidar principled sample machine can cover the wavelength range from 400nm to 1100nm. And this high spectral lidar principled sample machine was applied for the remote sensing detection of vegetation, oceans, minerals and some other ground object targets, through measuring the spectral radiance of the hyperspectral laser interacting with the target and returning to the lidar receiving system, so as to realize the real-time monitoring of vegetation, oceans and minerals. For the purpose of realizing the quantitative observation, an accurate radiometric calibration on high spectral lidar was required. The radiometric calibration of high spectral lidar was aimed at its receiving system, that was to determine the responsivity of the principled sample machine to the target spectral radiance. After finishing debugging, all the indicators of the principled sample machine can meet the application requirements, which provided a new monitoring means for the marine oil spill in our country and was of great significance for the future protection of marine environment and the application and exploitation of marine resources.

Study on non-invasive classification of engine oil based on visible and short-wave near infrared spectroscopy

Abstract:Visible and short-wave near infrared (Vis-SwNIR) spectroscopy was used for the non-invasive classification of engine oil. A total of 150 oil samples from three brands were prepared. The calibration set contains 120 samples which were randomly selected. The remaining 30 samples were used for the prediction. After the spectra measurement, principal component analysis was calculated to cluster the samples. Discrete wavelet transform (DWT) was used to do the spectral mining. The obtained wavelet coefficients were inputted into artificial neural network (ANN) for the brand classification of engine oil. The correct classification rate of 100% was obtained by DWT-ANN model. The overall results show that Vis-SwNIR spectroscopy is a feasible technique for the brand classification of engine oil.
Determining Spectral Groups to Distinguish Oil Emulsions from Sargassum over the Gulf of Mexico Using an Airborne Imaging Spectrometer

Abstract:During the weathering of marine-spilled oils, various types of oil pollution are formed that can harm marine and coastal environments. Thus, the remote detection, classification and quantification of spilled oils is important in marine environmental monitoring. Although multispectral images can be used to observe various spilled oils, due to confusion between the multispectral backscattered signals, distinguishing spilled oils from floating algae in the same image is challenging. The spectral features of carbon-hydrogen (-C-H) and oxygen-hydrogen (-O-H) groups, and pigments, are diagnostic absorption features and are different from the backscattering signal, they have not been used to improve detection independently. In this study, all the spectral features of the groups were clearly interpreted using reflectance spectra collected from an airborne visible infrared imaging spectrometer (AVIRIS). A reflectance peak-trough detection method to characterize the different spectral groups was used to determine the spectral features of Deepwater Horizon (DWH) oil emulsions and floating Sargassum in the Gulf of Mexico (GOM). The results show that the spilled oils and floating Sargassum can be clearly identified, and the various spilled oils (i.e., different oil emulsions and oil slicks) could also be determined from the differences in the spectral features of the above groups. Finally, we discuss the spectral requirements for the identification of these groups and we conclude that optical remote sensing, including imaging spectrometers, will play an increasingly important role in assessing marine oil spills.

Abstract:Hyperspectral remote sensing based oil and gas exploration technology aims to extract the related information of oil and gas, to achieve the target characteristics of underground oil and gas exploration and recognition through remote sensing data processing and analysis. The rapid development of hyperspectral remote sensing technology bring the accurate detection of surface reflectance spectrum, to increase the success possibility and reduce the cost of oil and gas exploration. The increasing spectral and space resolution of hyperspectral remote sensing bring a large size of data for two problems in the practical satellite platform-based imagery processing system. The bandwidth of the communication channel limits the transmission of the full hyperspectral image data for the further processing and analysis on the ground for the oil and gas exploration. The preprocessing of hyperspectral sensing data is a feasible way through machine learning-based data analysis technology, to produce one image from the full band of hyperspectral images through classifying the spectrum curve of each pixel according to the spectrum data of oil and gas. In this paper, we present the satellite platform based kernel machine-based system for oil and gas exploration based on hyperspectral remote sensing data.
