Abstract:Phase-coded radio frequency (RF) pulses are widely adopted for radar systems as an effective signal format to enable high-range resolution. However, generating such signals conventionally requires high-speed electronics and complex RF circuitry that impose burdens on the system cost and power consumption. In particular, modern radar systems desire features such as high frequencies, e.g., in the millimeter-wave region, high compactness, and high system flexibility, which pose great challenges for the conventional all-electronics solutions. In contrast, integrated microwave photonics opens a way to solutions that are able to provide those features simultaneously, together with potential for full integration and low cost fabrication. Here, we present an integrated microwave photonic method of a binary-phase-coded millimeter-wave signal generation. The core device is a silicon microring modulator with a device size of 0.13 mm×0.32 mm and a modulation bandwidth of 23 GHz. Using RF seed frequencies of 17.5 GHz and 20 GHz, respectively, we experimentally demonstrated the generation of binary-phase-coded signals at 35 GHz and 40 GHz using our proposed approach, the performance of which was verified by a pulse compression ratio of 94 and 106, respectively. The result of this work points to the realization of a chip-scale flexible millimeter-wave signal generator.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a frequency multiplying optoelectronic oscillator with nonlinearly-coupled double loops based on two cascaded Mach-Zehnder modulators, to generate high frequency microwave signals using only low-frequency devices. We find the final oscillation modes are only determined by the length of the master oscillation loop. Frequency multiplying signals are generated via nonlinearly-coupled double loops, the output of one loop being used to modulate the other. In the experiments, microwave signals at 10 GHz with -121 dBc/Hz phase noise at 10 kHz offset and 20 GHz with -112.8 dBc/Hz phase noise at 10 kHz offset are generated. Meanwhile, their side-mode suppression ratios are also evaluated and the maximum ratio of 70 dB is obtained.

Abstract:A simple realization of frequency-doubling optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) using a phase modulator and a chirp fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this OEO configuration, the phase modulator in combination with an optical filter is working as doubled-sideband phase modulation to produce a frequency-doubling microwave signal, while the CFBG ensures the oscillation of feedback driving signal at fundamental frequency by converting the phase-modulated signal to intensity-modulated signal. As a result, a self-oscillating fundamental microwave signal at 8 GHz and frequency-doubled microwave signal at 16 GHz are simultaneously obtained.

Abstract:Photonic generation of arbitrary waveforms based on pulse shaping and frequency-to-time mapping is of great interest since it offers an effective way to generate complex signals with large bandwidth. In this paper, we mathematically study the photonic generation of phase-coded radio frequency (RF) signals based on pulse shaping and frequency-to-time mapping in detail. By mathematically analyzing the process of signal generation and utilizing the less restrictive dispersion requirement, a design criterion for the generation of well-shaped phase-coded RF waveforms is presented, by which we can properly set the spatial light modulator in the pulse shaper and dispersion in the system according to the carrier frequency and modulating frequency of the desired waveform. In addition, the maximum achievable time-bandwidth product of phase-coded RF signals that can be generated is estimated. The theory is verified by numerical and experimental results. The presented results can be used to guide the design of a photonic system for the generation of high-quality phase-coded RF signals. (C) 2015 Optical Society of America

Abstract:A novel approach to photonic generation of phase-coded microwave signals based on optical pulse shaping and time delay is proposed. In the proposed approach, an optical short pulse train is inserted with a specified amount of time-delay to certain pulses, and then converted into super-Gaussian microwave pulses based on the optical pulse shaping technique. By properly adjusting the time-delay, phased-coded microwave signals with a desired code pattern can be generated. A model to describe the signal generation is developed, and the generations of phase-coded microwave signals with frequencies up to 50 GHz are demonstrated.

Abstract:In this paper, a photonic method to generate frequency-doubled microwave waveforms based on cascaded Mach-Zehnder modulator were proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Cascaded modulation were used to generate the ±1st-order sidebands with carrier suppression and ±3rd-order sidebands with ±1st-order sidebands suppression, which were polarization multiplexed and photodetected to generate the 2nd-order and 6th-order electrical harmonics. By properly adjusting the amplitude ratio of the 2nd-order and 6th-order harmonic signals, frequency-doubled triangle and square microwave waveforms were simulated. And a 2 GHz triangle and square waveform was realized in the experiment as a proof of concept, with RMSEs of 0.0989 and 0.3906 respectively. In addition, the effect of extinction ratio and modulation index of the modulator on RMSE were investigated. The results show that the proposed system is of such advantages as simple structure, easy implementation, low cost and flexible frequency tunability.

Abstract:A scheme for binary phase-coded microwave signal generation is proposed and experimentally demonstrated with a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). The carrier of the generated phase-coded signal is provided by the built-in dual-loop optoelectronic oscillator (OEO) based on the DPMZM. The principle of this signal generator and the oscillating condition of the OEO is theoretically described in detail. It is found that phase-coded signals can be produced by setting the three working points and the modulation depth of the DPMZM. In the proving experiment, a 10-GHz oscillating signal with a side mode suppression ratio of 49 dB is generated. The phase noise of this carrier wave is measured to be -80dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset with a 100-m and 1-km optical fiber used in the two oscillation loops. When 1-Gbit/s and 2-Gbit/s coding signals are, respectively, applied to the DPMZM, two 10-GHz self-oscillating phase-coded signals are eventually produced, and the π phase shift in the signals is successfully confirmed with the phase information extracted from the phase-coded signals.

Abstract:A photonics-assisted binary/quaternary phase-coded microwave signal generator with fundamental/doubling reconfigurable carrier frequency applicable to digital I/O interfaces is proposed and has been verified by experiments. This scheme is based on a cascade modulation scheme, which is used to reconfigure fundamental/doubling carrier frequency and load the phase-coded signal, respectively. By controlling the radio frequency (RF) switch and the bias voltages of the modulator, the switching of the fundamental or doubling carrier frequency can be realized. When the amplitudes and sequence pattern of the two independent coding signals are set reasonably, binary or quaternary phase-coded signals can be realized. The sequence pattern of coding signals is applicable to digital I/O interfaces and can be directly generated through the IO interfaces of FPGA instead of an expensive high-speed arbitrary waveform generator (AWG) or other digital-to-analog conversion (DAC) systems. A proof-of-concept experiment is carried out, and the performance of the proposed system is evaluated from the aspects of phase recovery accuracy and pulse compression capability. In addition, the influence of residual carrier suppression and polarization crosstalk in non-ideal states on phase shifting based on polarization adjustment has also been analyzed.

Abstract:A novel method of optical generation millimeter-wave (mm-wave) signals employing two cascaded optical modulators and four-wave-mixing effect in semiconductor optical amplifiers is proposed. This approach is capable of generating signals of four times, eight times, and 12 times microwave source frequency with high spectral purity and stability. A mm-wave of 42 GHz (12 x fundamental) with a 3-dB linewidth less than 30 Hz and a phase noise less than - 83 dBc/Hz at 10-kHz offset is obtained.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a tunable multi-tap microwave photonic filter (MPF) with complex coefficients. It is based on addition of carrier suppressed single sideband (CS-SSB) signal and phase-controllable optical carrier. Instead of using the technique of optical filtering, the CS-SSB signal is generated by a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator (DPMZM) in our scheme. Frequency tuning of the filter is achieved by changing the phase of the optical carrier, which can be controlled by a variable optical delay line (VDL). The proposed structure features high flexibility and wideband RF response, and the experimental results demonstrate that it can be tuned continuously over one free spectral range (FSR) without changing the spectral shape of the filter.

Abstract:A photonic scheme to generate a multi-frequency phase-coded microwave signal based on a dual-output Mach-Zehnder modulator (DOMZM) and balanced detection is proposed in this paper. The DOMZM driven by an electrical coding data modulates a coherent multi-wavelength light source (CMWL), and a balanced photodetector (BPD) demodulates the output of the DOMZM; as a result, a multi-frequency phase-coded microwave signal is generated. Experiments generate two two-frequency phase-coded signals: one is 5GHz/10GHz signal with a coding rate of 2Gb/s, and the other is 10GHz/20GHz signal with a coding rate of 4Gb/s. Their autocorrelation results show a good pulse compression capability. Each frequency of a two-frequency signal has similar performances with the other in terms of peak-to-side lobe ratio (PSR) and the full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the main lobe. The proposed scheme can be applied to radar to reduce false detections in adverse conditions. With its potential flexible frequency agility, it can be used for jamming resistance and elimination of the Doppler blind speed during moving target detection.

Abstract:We demonstrate novel phase-coded microwave signal generation based on a two-segment single-drive push-pull silicon Mach-Zehnder modulator. The coding signal and the microwave frequency are each applied to one of the separate segments. The phase-coded microwave signal is generated by properly setting the working point of the modulator. The precise it phase shift is determined by the sign of the coding signal. Both theoretical analysis and experimental demonstration are performed to verify the concept. The modulator successfully generates a 10-GHz (20-GHz) phase-coded microwave signal with a 5-Gb/s (10-Gb/s) coding data rate and the measured pulse compression ratio is 133.0 (156.8).

Abstract:On-chip photonic generation of tunable wideband phase-coded linearly-chirped microwave waveforms (PC-LCMWs) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The on-chip generation system consists of two main parts. One part is a hybrid Fourier-domain mode-locked opto-electronic oscillator (FDML-OEO) for a wideband linearly-chirped microwave waveform (LCMW) generation; the other part is a high-speed microwave photonic phase shifter (MPPS) to perform the phase-coding. By synchronizing the two parts, a PC-LCMW is finally generated. In the proposed chip, a thermally-tunable ultrahigh-Q micro-ring resonator (MRR) is a key component which is incorporated in the FDML-OEO loop to select the oscillation frequency, and an electrically-tunable micro-disk resonator (MDR), as another key component, is used to code the phase of the generated microwave signal while maintaining the amplitude by controlling the free carrier concentration in the lateral PN junction of the disk. With the use of the two key component chips, an experiment is performed and different PC-LCMWs are generated with a tunable center frequency from 12 to 16 GHz, a bandwidth from 2 to 6 GHz, and phase code of 7-bit and 13-bit Barker code. In particular, a PC-LCMW with a maximum bandwidth as wide as 6 GHz and an ultra-large time-bandwidth product (TBWP) as large as 1.96×106 is experimentally demonstrated. The proposed integrated PC-LCMW generation system holds great advantages including ultracompact configuration and fast tunability, which holds a high potential for applications in modern high-resolution multi-functional radar system.

Abstract:A microwave photonic frequency-doubling phase shifter with a broad bandwidth and large tuning range is proposed in this paper. Frequency doubling and phase shifting are realized by processing the input microwave signal in the optical domain at a dual-drive dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DD-DPMZM) and a dual-parallel Mach–Zehnder modulator (DPMZM). The input signal is split into two branches through a 90-degree hybrid splitter. One signal is sent to the DD-DPMZM to achieve a phase-shifted carrier-suppressed up-sideband by tuning the bias voltage, and the other is sent to the DPMZM to realize a carrier-suppressed down-sideband. By beating the phase-shifted up-sideband and the down-sideband at a photodetector (PD), the input signal is frequency doubled and phase shifted. The proposed frequency-doubling phase shifter is simulated. The results show that the frequency-doubled signal has a phase-tuning range from 0 to 360 degrees. In addition, the influence of the amplitude and phase unbalance of the 90-degree hybrid splitter on the magnitude variation and phase deviation of the frequency-doubling phase shifter is studied.

Abstract:An approach for photonic generation of multi-function microwave/pulse signals has been proposed and verified, which is capable of achieving Nyquist/triangular pulse signals and frequency quadrupling/12-tupling microwave signals. Based on optical carrier suppressed modulation in a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator, a four-line optical frequency comb and a Nyquist pulse are generated. Subsequently, polarization controlling using an optical interleaver and a linear polarizer is conducted to manipulate spectra, after which a pulse signal with triangular shape and a microwave signal with high-frequency multiplication factor are generated. By applying a 10-GHz RF driving signal, a Nyquist pulse and a full-duty-cycle triangular pulse with repetition frequency of 40 GHz, and 40-/120-GHz millimeter-wave signals can be obtained. This proposal provides the potential of higher-frequency multi-waveform and millimeter-wave signals generator for an all-optical network.
