Abstract:We propose and investigate the use of a Kramers–Kronig (KK) receiver in a single sideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing radio over fiber (SSB-OFDM-RoF) link based on an optical remote heterodyne solution. This scheme is effective in eliminating the signal-to-signal beating interference introduced by square-law detection of a photo-detector in an SSB-OFDM-RoF link. We extensively study the influences of different carrier-to-signal power ratios (CSPRs), laser linewidths, and transmission distances on our proposed scheme. It is proved that the KK-based receiver can reduce optimal CSPR by more than 5 dB and provide about 1.1 dB gain over the conventional mixer-based receiver scheme with CSPR of 11 dB after 75 km fiber transmission.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a spectrally efficient twin-SSB single carrier system based on multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) processing. MIMO processing based on training sequence aided and decision-directed least mean square (LMS) is applied to mitigate the crosstalk introduced by non-ideal optical filters in receiver. The number of taps used in MIMO is evaluated. In addition, performance of Kramers–Kronig receiver and one-stage signal–signal beat interference (SSBI) mitigation algorithm is compared. 264 Gb/s per polarization in C-band transmission over 80 km SSMF with a net bit rate of 220 Gb/s using 88 GSa/s DACs is experimentally demonstrated with KK receiver.

Abstract:A quadrature sub-branch hybrid selection/maximal-ratio combining (QBHS/MRC) scheme for one-dimensional modulations in Rayleigh fading is proposed. At the receiver, N diversity branches are split into 2N in-phase and quadrature sub-branches. Traditional hybrid selection/maximal-ratio combining (H-S/MRC) is then applied over the 2N sub-branches. The symbol error rate (SER) of M-ary pulse amplitude modulation (PAM), including coherent binary phase shift keying (BPSK), with QBHS/MRC is derived. The mean output signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of a QBHS/MRC combiner is given. The performances of QBHS/MRC and H-S/MRC are compared. Results show that QBHS/MRC systems outperform traditional H-S/MRC systems.

Abstract:With the increasing demand of bandwidth, a higher capacity communication system is required for optical short link and access network. Intensity modulationdirect detection (IM-DD) is considered as a reasonable method in access network, due to its low cost and power consumption. However, it reduces the spectral efficiency compared with IQ modulation. In addition, single-sideband (SSB) signal occupies less bandwidth than double-sideband signal (DSB). However, SSB systems suffer from signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) from photodiodes (PDs). Recently, KramersKronig (KK) receiver is proposed to mitigate SSBI. Meanwhile, single-sideband (SSB) signal is the prerequisite for KK scheme, and this kind of signal is also tolerant to fiber chromatic dispersion and multipath-fading. On the other hand, free-space optical (FSO) communication is becoming a promising candidate for next generation optical access network. Thus we experimentally demonstrate the KK scheme in 20km SSMF and 20m FSO links with both single carrier signal and multicarrier signal. We compare the performance between them with and without pre-equalization (pre-EQ). With the help of probabilistically shaped (PS) mapping to gives an increase in the sensitivity over an additive white Gaussian noise (AWGN). We reach a 117bits transmission with a spectral efficiency of 5.85bitsHz of 20Ghz bandwidth with single modulator and single photodiode (PD) in fiber-FSO system.

Abstract:The performance of direct-detection transceivers employing electronic dispersion compensation combined with DSP-based receiver linearization techniques is assessed through experiments on a 4 112 Gbs wavelength-division multiplexing direct-detection single-sideband 16 quadratic-amplitude modulation Nyquist-subcarrier-modulation system operating at a net optical information spectral density of 2.8 bsHz in transmission over standard single mode fiber links of up to 240 km. The experimental results indicate that systems with receiver-based dispersion compensation can achieve similar performance to those utilizing transmitter-based dispersion compensation, provided it is implemented together with an effective digital receiver linearization technique. The use of receiver-based compensation would simplify the operation of a fiber link since knowledge of the link dispersion is not required at the transmitter. The recently proposed KramersKronig receiver scheme was found to be the best performing among the receiver linearization techniques assessed. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental demonstration of the KramersKronig scheme.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a 28-GHz optical remote heterodyne RoF link using KK receiver for the first time. An optical SSB modulated signal is obtained utilizing an IQ modulator and two free-running lasers. Due to its minimum phase property, KK algorithm can be adopted to reconstruct the complex 16-QAM signal from the received intensity signal. This scheme is effective in eliminating the SSBI penalty introduced by square-law detection. Through the use of the KK receiver, the power penalty caused by the 80 km SSMF transmission is found to be less than 1 dB with digital CDC post processing. The KK-based receiver can also provide about 2 dB advantage over the traditional receiver at the 7% HD-FEC threshold in the case of 28 GBaud rate transmission over 80 km fiber. Furthermore, as the baud rate increases, the benefit of KK receiving scheme is more obvious and superior than that of the traditional receiving scheme.

Abstract:Spatial modulation (SM) and space shift keying (SSK) techniques have the unique advantages of their single-radio-frequency (RF) structures compared with conventional multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) techniques. However, the transmission rates of these techniques are decided by the maximal switching frequency or by the minimal switching time between the RF chain and transmit antennas, which has been a bottleneck for their applications in future broadband wireless communications. To alleviate this problem, we propose a class of novel offset SM (OSM) and offset SSK (OSSK) schemes, with the aid of channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Compared with conventional SM and SSK, the proposed OSM and OSSK schemes can reduce the switching frequency of the RF chain, by introducing an offset between the connected RF chain and the index of the spatial modulated antenna. In extreme conditions, the proposed OSM and OSSK can work without RF switching while maintaining the single-RF advantage of conventional SM and SSK schemes. Through theoretical analysis, we also develop the bit-error rate (BER) performance bounds for the proposed two schemes. Finally, our simulation results demonstrate that the proposed OSM and OSSK outperform their counterparts, including conventional SM, SSK, CSI-aided SM, and CSI-aided SSK, while having a simplified RF-switching structure.

Abstract:We experimentally demonstrate an orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) system with direct detection. Adopting Kramers-Kronig (KK) detection and probabilistic shaping (PS) technology, 140-Gb/s 256-QAM signal can he successfully transmitted over 25-km standard single-mode fiber (SSMF), which satisfies the normalized generalized mutual information (NGMI) threshold of 0.865. Based on the experimental results, the performance of single-side band (SSB) OFDM signal can he effectively improved with the aid of KK detection and can he further enhanced by the deployed PS method.

Abstract:In this paper, we propose a spectrally efficient and cost-effective twin-SSB OFDM system based on Kramers–Kronig optical phase reconstruction and time-interleaved frame (TIF). C-band transmission over 80 km SSMF with a net bit rate of 88.5 Gb/s using 40 GSa/s DACs is experimentally demonstrated with a BER threshold of 3.8e−3. Two optical filters are employed to separate the two sidebands at the receiver. The imperfection of filter transfer function introduces crosstalk between them, which can be mitigated by the TIF. The impact of optical filter parameters, including roll-off, bandwidth and center frequency shift, are studied and analyzed in detail by simulation. We show that the roll-off determines the required size of TIF, and the optical fiber bandwidth leads to tradeoff between carrier-to-signal power ratio and spectral efficiency. Finally, the optimization and tolerance range of the filter center frequency shift are numerically evaluated.

Abstract:We introduce and experimentally demonstrate a modified Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver with direct detection (DD) to realize an accurate optical field reconstruction at low carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR) condition. In our scheme, an exponential operation is applied to a single-sideband (SSB) signal, rather than a continuous-wave tone adding method in the conventional KK scheme. By this means, the minimum phase condition (MPC) is inherently satisfied, thus the optical field can be reconstructed accurately through KK relation at a low CSPR, leading to a high receiver sensitivity in a DD system. A proof-of-concept experiment is conducted, in which an SSB signal is generated based on an 8-GBaud 16-quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) data stream and then is transmitted over an 80-km single mode fiber (SMF). By using the modified KK technique, 1.1- and 0.9-dB sensitivity improvements are achieved in the optical back-to-back and after the fiber transmission cases, respectively. The proposed and the conventional KK schemes show similar BER performances at the optimum CSPR value with a high received optical power. In addition, we perform numerical simulations to study the impacts of bandwidth limitation and chromatic dispersion on the proposed minimum phase signal.

Abstract:Direct detection (DD) systems based on high-order quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) is promising to provide high spectrum efficiency (SE) for future short-reach data-center applications with next generation standardization of 800GbE or even 1.6TbE considering bandwidth limitation. Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver is recently proposed as an effective method to inherently remove signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) by reconstructing complex optical field in single-sideband (SSB) DD systems. In this paper, we make a detailed system performance assessment of applying a KK receiver in 128, 256 and 512QAM systems through simulations and experimental demonstrations. 25GHz-spaced 4 140 Gbs wavelength division multiplexing (WDM) 128QAM and 4 160 Gbs WDM 256QAM SSB KK transmissions over 20km of standard single-mode fiber (SSMF) are successfully achieved. As far as we know, this is the first time that a constellation size as high as 256QAM with a net SE of 5.12 bsHz is experimentally demonstrated in a WDM system with KK receiver, and the effect of adjusting carrier-to-signal power ratio (CSPR) on the performance of 128, 256 and 512QAM systems is also investigated with simulation and experimental results.

Abstract:We propose a single-side band (SSB) Radio-over-Fiber (RoF) system based on OFDM-MSK modulation. In-phase/quadrature-phase (IQ) imbalance effect can significantly degrade the system performance. In order to obtain a better system performance, at the transmitter, the phase departure tolerance should be within 1 degree and the amplitude departure tolerance within 5% in the electrical domain, while in the optical domain, 10 degrees and 40%, respectively. At the receiver, the phase departure tolerance should be within 2 degrees and the amplitude departure tolerance within 10%.

Abstract:Nonlinear distortion for single-sideband (SSB) signals will significantly reduce the performance of Kramers-Kronig (KK) receiver-based optical transmission. In this work, we present a proof-of-concept study of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS)-induced nonlinear distortion for 10 Gbaud and 28 Gbaud SSB QAM16 transmission over 80 km standard single mode fiber (SSMF) based on a KK receiver. Significantly reduced bit error rate (BER) has been experimentally observed due to the SBS and the threshold of SBS at about 7 dBm is detected for such an 80 km SSMF link. With left sideband (LSB) modulation of SSB, together with optical filtering, reduced SBS nonlinear distortion has been achieved with ~2 dB power tolerance improvement. The results reveal an important issue of SBS-induced nonlinear distortion, which would be of great significance for KK receiver-based optical transmission applications.

Abstract:As the demand for high data volumes keeps increasing in optical access networks, transmission capacities and distance are becoming bottlenecks for passive optical networks (PONs). To solve this problem, a novel scheme based on multi-twin single sideband (SSB) modulation with direct detection is proposed and investigated in this paper. At the central office, two SSB signals are generated simultaneously with the same digital-to-analog converters (DACs). The twin-SSB signal is not only robust against frequency selected power fading introduced by chromatic dispersion (CD), but also improves the spectral efficiency (SE). By combining a twin-SSB technique with multi-band carrier-less amplitude/phase modulation (multi-CAP), different optical network units (ONUs) can be supported by flexible multi-band allocation based on software-reconfigurable optical transceivers. The Kramers-Kronig (KK) scheme is adopted on the ONU side to effectively mitigate the signal-signal beat interference (SSBI) induced by the square-law detection. The proposed system is extensively studied and validated with four sub-bands using 50 Gbps 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) modulation for each sub-band using numerical simulations. Digital pre-equalization is introduced at the transmitter-side to balance the performance of different ONUs. After system optimization, a bit error rate (BER) threshold for hard decision forward error correction (HD-FEC) code with 7% redundancy ratio (BER = 3.8 x 10(-3)) can be reached for all ONUs over 50-km standard single-mode fiber.

Abstract:We have theoretically and experimentally investigated the effect of the interference between subcarrier-signal beat interference (SSBI) in 60 GHz orthogonal frequency division multiplexing - radio-over-fiber (OFDM-ROF) system. In order to reduce the influence of SSBI, we compared four kinds of OFDM frames with different training sequences as all-real, all-complex, complex-zero and real-zero training. The experimental results show the power penalty of all-real, all-complex, complex-zero and real-zero training is 2.5, 5.5, 4 and 1dB at BER of 1x10-3 after 20km standard single mode fiber (SMF) transmission, respectively. The real-zero training OFDM frame with interleave structure and lower modulation order signal suffered from the least SSBI shows the best performance. (C)2011 Optical Society of America
