Abstract:A stochastic averaging method for strongly non-linear oscillators under external and/or parametric excitation of bounded noise is proposed by using the so-called generalized harmonics functions. The method is then applied to study the primary resonance of Duffing oscillator with hardening spring under external excitation of bounded noise. The stochastic jump and its bifurcation of the system are observed and explained by using the stationary probability density of amplitude and phase. Subsequently, the method is applied to study the dynamical instability and parametric resonance of Duffing oscillator with hardening spring under parametric excitation of bounded noise. The primary unstable region is delineated by evaluating the Lyapunov exponent of linearized system, and the response and jump of non-linear system around the unstable region are examined by using the sample functions and stationary probability density of amplitude and phase.

Abstract:A stochastic averaging procedure for coupled Duffing-van der Pol oscillators subject to combined harmonic and white noise excitations is proposed and the averaged Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov(FPK) equation is solved by using the finite difference method. Based on the stationary joint probability density of amplitude and phase of the first oscillator, the stochastic jump of the coupled Dung-van der Pol oscillators and its bifurcation as the system parameters change are examined.

A stochastic averaging method and the Khasminskii's procedure are applied to evaluate the largest Lyapunov exponent. Abstract:Physical and engineering systems are often subjected to combined harmonic and random excitations. The random excitation is often modeled as Gaussian white noise for mathematical tractability. However, in practice, the random excitation is nonwhite. This paper investigates the stationary response probability density of strongly nonlinear oscillators under combined harmonic and wide-band noise excitations. By using generalized harmonic functions, a new stochastic averaging procedure for estimating stationary response probability density of strongly nonlinear oscillators under combined harmonic and wide-band noise excitations is developed. The damping can be linear and (or) nonlinear and the excitations can be external and (or) parametric. After stochastic averaging, the system state is represented by two-dimensional time-homogeneous diffusive Markov processes. The method of reduced Fokker-Planck-Kolmogorov equation is used to investigate the stationary response of the vibration system. A nonlinearly damped Duffing oscillator is taken as an example to show the application and validity of the method. In the case of primary external resonance, based on the stationary joint probability density of amplitude and phase difference, the stochastic jump of the Duffing oscillator and P-bifurcation as the system parameters change are examined for the first time. The agreement between the analytical results and those from Monte Carlo simulation of original system shows that the proposed procedure works quite well.

Abstract:The jump and bifurcation of Duffing oscillator with hardening spring subject to narrow-band random excitation are systematically and comprehensively examined. It is shown that, in a certain domain of the space of the oscillator and excitation parameters, there are two types of more probable motions in the stationary response of the Duffing oscillator and jumps may occur. The jump is a transition of the response from one more probable motion to another or vise versa. Outside the domain the stationary response is either nearly Gaussian or like a diffused limit cycle. As the parameters change across the boundary of the domain the qualitative behavior of the stationary response changes and it is a special kind of bifurcation. It is also shown that, for a set of specified parameters, the statistics are unique and they are independent of initial condition. It is pointed out that some previous results and interpretations on this problem are incorrect.

Abstract:A new stochastic averaging procedure for single-degree-of-freedom strongly non-linear oscillators with lightly linear and (or) non-linear dampings subject to weakly external and (or) parametric excitations of wide-band random processes is developed by using the so-called generalized harmonic functions. The procedure is applied to predict the response of Duffing–van der Pol oscillator under both external and parametric excitations of wide-band stationary random processes. The analytical stationary probability density is verified by digital simulation and the factors affecting the accuracy of the procedure are analyzed. The proposed procedure is also applied to study the asymptotic stability in probability and stochastic Hopf bifurcation of Duffing–van der Pol oscillator under parametric excitations of wide-band stationary random processes in both stiffness and damping terms. The stability conditions and bifurcation parameter are simply determined by examining the asymptotic behaviors of averaged square-root of total energy and averaged total energy, respectively, at its boundaries. It is shown that the stability analysis using linearized equation is correct only if the linear stiffness term does not vanish.

Abstract:Based on generalized harmonic functions,a new stochastic averaging procedure for strongly nonlinear oscillators under combined periodical and wide-band colored noise excitations is used to investigate the stationary response of Duffing-Rayleigh-Mathieu system under colored noise excitation.The damping is linear plus nonlinear.The periodical excitation is parametric and the random excitations are external plus parametric.The motion equation of the original system is transformed to a set of stochastic differential equations by van der Pol transformation.According to Stratonovich-Khasminskii limit theorem and by introducing phase difference,the stochastic averaging and deterministic averaging procedures are completed and the original system is approximated by two diffusion processes in the case of resonance.The reduced FPK equation is established and solved numerically with boundary conditions and normalization condition.All theoretical results are verified by Monte Carlo digital simulation.

The stochastic averaging method for strongly nonlinear oscillators under wide-band random excitation recently developed by the present authors is applied to the system to obtain the averaged Ito stochastic differential equations for the Hamiltonian and its square-coot. The asymptotic stability of the original system in probability is approximately determined by examining the asymptotic behaviors of the diffusion process of averaged square-root of Hamiltonian at its two boundaries, The stochastic Hopf bifurcation of the original system is approximately determined by calculating the drift exponent, diffusion exponent and character value of the diffusion process of averaged Hamiltonian at its two boundaries.

Abstract:The stochastic stability of the harmonically and randomly excited Duffing oscillator with damping modeled by a fractional derivative of Caputo’s definition is analyzed. First, the system state is approximately described by Itô equations through the stochastic averaging method based on the generalized harmonic function. Then, the associated expression for the largest Lyapunov exponent of the linearized averaged Itô is derived, and the necessary and sufficient condition for the asymptotic stability with probability one of the trivial solution of the original system is obtained approximately by letting the largest Lyapunov exponent be negative. The effects of fractional orders and random excitation intensities on the asymptotic stability with probability one determined by the largest Lyapunov exponent are shown graphically.

Abstract:This paper presents a procedure for predicting the response of Duffing system with delayed feedback bang–bang control under combined harmonic and real noise excitations by using the stochastic averaging method. First, the time-delayed feedback bang–bang control force is expressed approximately in terms of the system state variables without time delay. Then the averaged Itô stochastic differential equations for the system are derived by using the stochastic averaging method. Finally, the response of the system is obtained by solving the Fokker–Plank–Kolmogorov (FPK) equation associated with the averaged Itô equations. It is shown that the time delay in feedback control can deteriorate the control effectiveness and cause bifurcation of stochastic jump of Duffing system. The validity of the proposed method is confirmed by digital simulation.

Abstract:The first-passage time of Duffing oscillator under combined harmonic andwhite-noise excitations is studied. The equation of motion of the system is firstreduced to a set of averaged Itô stochastic differential equations by using thestochastic averaging method. Then, a backward Kolmogorov equation governing theconditional reliability function and a set of generalized Pontryagin equationsgoverning the conditional moments of first-passage time are established. Finally, theconditional reliability function, and the conditional probability density and momentsof first-passage time are obtained by solving the backward Kolmogorov equation andgeneralized Pontryagin equations with suitable initial and boundary conditions.Numerical results for two resonant cases with several sets of parameter values areobtained and the analytical results are verified by using those from digital simulation.

Abstract:The stationary response of Duffing oscillator with hardening stiffness and fractional derivative under Gaussian white noise excitation is studied. First, the term associated with fractional derivative is separated into the equivalent quasi-linear dissipative force and quasi-linear restoring force by using the generalized harmonic balance technique, and the original system is replaced by an equivalent nonlinear stochastic system without fractional derivative. Then, the stochastic averaging method of energy envelope is applied to the equivalent nonlinear stochastic system to yield the averaged Itô equation of energy envelope, from which the corresponding Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov (FPK) equation is established and solved to obtain the stationary probability densities of the energy envelope and the amplitude envelope. The accuracy of the analytical results is validated by those from the Monte Carlo simulation of original system.

Two cases of external resonance only and both internal and external resonances are considered separately. The reduced averaged Fokker–Planck–Kolmogorov equation is solved by using the combination of the finite difference method and the successive over relaxation method. An example of two coupled Duffing oscillators under bounded noise excitations is given to illustrate the application of the proposed procedure. Abstract:The asymptotic Lyapunov stability with probability one of a Duffing system with time-delayed feedback control under bounded noise parametric excitation is studied. First, the time-delayed feedback control force is expressed approximately in terms of the system state variables without time delay. Then, the averaged Itô stochastic differential equations for the system are derived by using the stochastic averaging method and the expression for the Lyapunov exponent of the linearized averaged Itô equations is derived. It is inferred that the Lyapunov exponent so obtained is the first approximation of the largest Lyapunov exponent of the original system, and the asymptotic Lyapunov stability with probability one of the original system can be determined approximately by using the Lyapunov exponent. Finally, the effects of time delay in feedback control on the Lyapunov exponent and the stability of the system are analyzed. The theoretical results are well verified through digital simulation.
Chaotic motion of Duffing oscillator under parametric excitation of bounded noise

Abstract:The possibility for onset of chaotic motion in the Duffing oscillator under parametric excitation of bounded noise is studied. The stochastic Melnikov process is first derived and the critical value of excitation amplitude for the onset of chaotic motion is obtained based on the stochastic Melnikov process having simple zero in the mean square sense. Then, the largest Lyapunov exponent of the system is calculated numerically and the critical value of excitation amplitude is obtained based on vanishing of the largest Lyapunov exponent. It is found that both two critical values increase as the intensity of noise increases for larger value of noise intensity.
