Abstract:Singular perturbation reaction-diffusion problem with Dirichlet boundary condition is considered. It is a multi-scale problem. Presence of small parameter leads to boundary layer phenomena in both sides of the region. A non-equidistant finite difference method is presented according to the property of boundary layer. The region is divided into an inner boundary layer region and an outer boundary layer region according to transition point of Shishkin. The steps sizes are equidistant in the outer boundary layer region. The step sizes are gradually increased in the inner boundary layer region such that half of the step sizes are different from each other. Truncation error is estimated. The proposed method is stable and uniformly convergent with the order higher than 2. Numerical results are given, which are in agreement with the theoretical result.

Abstract:A new and rather general analytic method for strongly nonlinear problems,namely the homotopy analysis method (HAM),is reviewed.Different from perturbation techniques,the homotopy analysis method is totally independent of small physical parameters,and thus is suitable for most nonlinear problems.Besides, different from all other analytic techniques,it provides us a simple way to ensure the convergence of solution series,so that one can always get accurate enough analytic approximations.Furthermore,different from all other analytic methods,it provides us a great freedom to choose base functions of solution series,so that a nonlinear problem may be approximated more effectively.The homotopy analysis method provides us a completely new way and a different approach to solve nonlinear problems,especially those without small physical parameters.In this review paper,the basic concepts of the homotopy analysis method and its applications in nonlinear mechanics,physics,chemistry,biology,finance,engineering,computational mathematics and so on are discussed,together with its difference and relationship to perturbation techniques,Lyapunov artificial small parameter method,δ-expansion method,Adomian decomposition method,and the so-called homotopy perturbation method.

Abstract:The paper presents a complete (to the best of the author's knowledge) overview on the existing literature concerning the NLS equation with point-concentrated nonlinearity. Precisely, it mainly covers the following topics: definition of the model, weak and strong local well-posedness, global well-posedness, classification and stability (orbital and asymptotic) of the standing waves, blow-up analysis and derivation from the standard NLS equation with shrinking potentials. Also some related problem is mentioned.

Abstract:One simple, typical non-linear equation is used in this paper to describe a kind of analytical technique for non-linear problems. This technique is based on both homotopy in topology and the Maclaurin series. In contrast to perturbation techniques, the proposed method does not require small or large parameters. The example shows that the proposed method can give much better approximations than those given by perturbation techniques. In addition the proposed method can be used to obtain formulae uniformly valid for both small and large parameters in non-linear problems.

Abstract:In the present paper, a brief survey on computational techniques for the different classes of singularly perturbed problems is given. This survey is a continuation of work performed earlier by the first author and contains the literature of the work done by the researchers during the years 2000–2009. However some older important relevant papers are also included in this survey. We also mentioned those papers which are not surveyed in the previous survey papers by the first author of this paper, see [Appl. Math. Comput. 30 (1989) 223–259, 130 (2002) 457–510, 134 (2003) 371–429] for details. Thus this survey paper contains a surprisingly large amount of literature on singularly perturbed problems and indeed can serve as an introduction to some of the ideas and methods for the singular perturbation problems.

Abstract:This paper presents a nonperturbative method for solving eigenproblems. This method applies to almost all potentials and provides nonperturbative approximations for any energy level. The method converts an eigenproblem into a perturbation problem, obtains perturbation solutions through standard perturbation theory, and then analytically continues the perturbative solution into a nonperturbative solution. Concretely, we follow three main steps: (1) Introduce an auxiliary potential that can be solved exactly and treat the potential to be solved as a perturbation on this auxiliary system. (2) Use perturbation theory to obtain an approximate polynomial of the eigenproblem. (3) Use a rational approximation to analytically continue this approximate polynomial into the nonperturbative region.

Abstract:The theory of 'point estimate' and the concept of 'general convergence', which were put forward by Smale in order to investigate the complexity of algorithms for solving equations, have been producing a deep impact on the research about the local behavior, the semi-local behavior and the global behavior of iteration methods. The criterion of point estimate introduced by him not only provides a tool for quantitative analysis of the local behavior but also motivates the establishing of the unified determination for the semi-local behavior. Studying the global behavior in the view of discrete dynamical system will lead to many profound research subjects and open up a rich and colorful prospect. In this review, we will make a summarization about the research progress and some applications in nonsmooth optimizations.

Abstract:In this paper, the basic ideas of a new analytic technique, namely the Homotopy Analysis Method (HAM), are described. Different from perturbation methods, the validity of the HAM is independent on whether or not there exist small parameters in considered nonlinear equations. Therefore, it provides us with a powerful analytic tool for strongly nonlinear problems. A typical nonlinear problem is used as an example to verify the validity and the great potential of the HAM.

Abstract:A systematic perturbation theory is presented for the analysis of nonlinear problems. The lowest-order result is just that obtained by linearizing the problem, and the higher-order terms are the solutions of inhomogeneous linear problems. The essential feature of the method is the procedure for avoiding secular terms, which is based on the Lindstedt-Poincaré technique employed in celestial mechanics. The method is applied to the following nonlinear boundary value problems: (1) temperature distribution due to a nonlinear heat source or sink; (2) self-sustained oscillations of a system with infinitely many degrees of freedom; (3) forced vibrations of a ``string'' with a nonlinear restoring force; (4) superconductivity in a body of arbitrary shape with external magnetic field; (5) superconductivity in an infinite film with parallel magnetic field; (6) comparison of solutions of the Hartree, Fock, and Schrödinger equations for the helium atom. The results in each case are different both qualitatively and quantitatively from those of the linear theory.

Abstract:Based on a new kind of analytic method, namely the homotopy analysis method, an analytic approach to solve multiple solutions of strongly nonlinear problems is described by using Gelfand equation as an example. Its validity is verified by comparing the approximation series with the known exact solution. And different from perturbation techniques, this approach is independent upon any small/large perturbation quantities. So, the basic ideas of this approach can be employed to search for multiple solutions of strongly nonlinear problems in science and engineering.

Abstract:This article aims at the construction and analysis of a computational method for a class of singularly perturbed nonlinear differential equations of convection diffusion type with Cauchy data. A computational method, which is a combination of finite difference operators and a Shishkin mesh, is constructed to solve the class of problems. An algorithm involving the continuation technique together with the suggested computational method is developed to solve the class of problems numerically. The newly developed computational method is proved to be essentially first-order parameter-independent convergent. Computational experiments included support the theoretical results.

Abstract:In this paper, a simple approach to enlarging convergence regions of perturbation approximations is proposed. Based on the so-called general Taylor theorems, this approach has a solid mathematical foundation. Moreover, it is rather simple to apply. Two nonlinear equations, the Riccati equation and the Van der Pol equation are used as examples to illustrate the validity and the great potential of this approach.

Abstract:In the paper, two new analytic methods using the decomposition and linearization technique on nonlinear differential/integral equations are developed, namely, the decomposition–linearization–sequential method (DLSM) and the linearized homotopy perturbation method (LHPM). The DLSM is realized by an integrating factor and the integral of certain function obtained at the previous step for obtaining a sequential analytic solution of nonlinear differential equation, which provides quite accurate analytic solution. Some first- and second-order nonlinear differential equations display the fast convergence and accuracy of the DLSM. An analytic approximation for the Volterra differential–integral equation model of the population growth of a species is obtained by using the LHPM. In addition, the LHPM is also applied to the first-, second-, and third-order nonlinear ordinary differential equations. To reduce the cost of computation of He's homotopy perturbation method and enhance the accuracy for solving cubically nonlinear jerk equations, the LHPM is implemented by invoking a linearization technique in advance is developed. A generalization of the LHPM to the nth-order nonlinear differential equation is involved, which can greatly simplify the work to find an analytic solution by solving a set of second-order linear differential equations. A remarkable feature of those new analytic methods is that just a few steps and lower-order approximations are sufficient for producing reasonably accurate analytic solutions. For all examples, the second-order analytic solution x2(t) is found to be a good approximation of the real solution. The accuracy of the obtained approximate solutions are identified by the fourth-order Runge–Kutta method. The major objection is to unify the analytic solution methods of different nonlinear differential equations by simply solving a set of first-order or second-order linear differential equations. It is clear that the new technique considerably saves computational costs and converges faster than other analytical solution techniques existing in the literature, including the Picard iteration method. Moreover, the accuracy of the obtained analytic solution is raised.

Abstract:This paper revisits the parametric analysis of semidefinite optimization problems with respect to the perturbation of the objective function along a fixed direction. We review the notions of invariancy set, nonlinearity interval, and transition point of the optimal partition, and we investigate their characterizations. We show that the set of transition points is finite and the continuity of the optimal set mapping, on the basis of Painlevé–Kuratowski set convergence, might fail on a nonlinearity interval. Under a local nonsingularity condition, we then develop a methodology, stemming from numerical algebraic geometry, to efficiently compute nonlinearity intervals and transition points of the optimal partition. Finally, we support the theoretical results by applying our procedure to some numerical examples.

Abstract:A modest review on stability investigations of numerical methods for systems of Itô-interpreted stochastic differential equations (SDEs) driven by -dimensional Wiener processes is presented in . Since the problem of relevance of 1D test equations for multidimensional numerical methods has not completely been solved so far, we suggest to use the Krein-Perron-Frobenius theory of positive operators on positive cones of , instead of classic stability functions with values in , which is only relevant for the very restricted case of "simultaneously diagonalizable" SDEs. Our main focus is put on the concept of asymptotic mean square and almost sure (a.s.) stability for systems with state-dependent noise (multiplicative case), and the concept of exact preservation of asymptotic probabilistic quantities for systems with state-independent noise (additive case). The asymptotic exactness of midpoint methods with any equidistant step size is worked out in order to underline their superiority within the class of all drift-implicit, classic theta methods for multidimensional, bilinear systems of SDEs. Balanced implicit methods with appropriate weights can also provide a.s. exact, asymptotically stable numerical methods for pure diffusions. The review on numerical stability is based on "major breakthroughs" of research for systems of SDEs over the last 35 years, with emphasis on applicability to all dimensions .

Abstract:In this article, an effective computational technique is developed to get an analytical approximation to the solution of a class of two-point nonlinear singular boundary value problems arising in different physical models. The proposed approach consists of two steps. Firstly, formulate an integral operator by involving Green's function, and then, the Halpern's fixed-point method is implemented to the obtained integral operator to establish the desired iterative technique. The convergence of this approach is also discussed. To show the efficiency of our approach, various numerical examples are considered. The main advantages of the proposed method over existing methods are that the proposed method does not require Adomian polynomials to handle the nonlinearity, solves the problem without using the Lagrange multipliers and constrained variations and takes both endpoints of the interval into consideration. Further, the proposed method tackles the problems without requiring linearization, discretization, and perturbation assumptions, unlike other semi-analytical methods.

Abstract:The linearization approach is widely known and can be used to analyze and understand the governing flows of many real-order nonlinear systems. In this paper, we provide a new method of linearization that gives useful tools for the local and/or global asymptotic stability analysis of many such nonlinear systems defined in the sense of Caputo derivative. The new results that concern order-dependent conditions based on comparison linearization theorems with the introduction of a new function are proposed. The implications of the introduced theoretical approach are illustrated to a nonlinear system when initial time is negative and to a positive initial-time real-order Lorenz system.
